Search for the Avatar ReviewSearch for the Avatar captured and transported me from the Pyramids of Giza to outback Australia and another world. This is a fantasy novel, but the themes of self discovery, of what it means to be good or bad, appreciating your natural talents or "powers", and working as a team, are all relevant regardless of the setting.
Although the main characters are teenagers, they are realistically written, which is a relief from the stereotypical, angsty teen that is often depicted. These are real teenagers (so there is still a little angst!) trying to understand themselves and those around them, while finding themselves in challenging situations where they have to think practically or innovatively.
As the story develops there are more clues to what exactly is going on, but every time I thought I had it all wrapped up, there was more to the story. This is the first novel in a series, so although it is self contained, you will get to the end and want more.
Search for the Avatar is an exciting read and will appeal to children in late primary school to high school, but also adults who enjoy fantasy and a well written adventure.
