Lady Death: Origins Volume 1 HC ReviewI've been a fan of Lady Death since her beginnings at Chaos Comics. I was upset when Chaos closed its doors, but Lady Death has found a steadier and more permanent home at Boundless/Avatar. This trade collects Lady Death's origins with Avatar comics.
Abandon All Hope issues 1/2, 1-4 from 2005 tells the beginning of her new origin story. This story differs slightly from the original Chaos origin (since Avatar does not have the rights to the other Chaos characters that factor heavily into Lady Death's tale). Wicked (issues 1/2 and 1 from 2005) is also included in this trade.
As for the book itself:
The trade is very solid. I've read it quite a few times, and none of the pages have come loose. It features an introduction by Brian Pulido (creator and writer of Lady Death). It has the issue covers, as well as a nice gallery of variant covers released from the issues inside (though I believe the variant cover gallery is incomplete). My only complaint is minor: While reading the issues, there is nothing that tells you what issue you are reading. The issues are separated into chapters, but it doesn't say what issues the chapters are. It was a little jarring going from the end of the Abandon All Hope miniseries into Wicked without any notice.
Overall, I highly suggest this book to both long-time Lady Death fans and people who are new to the character. Old fans will enjoy the new take on her origin story (which include some vast improvements over the original, in my opinion). New fans will be thrown into her world(s) from the beginning.
If you have even the slightest interest in finding out who Lady Death is, this is certainly the place to start. Brian Pulido's writing and story-telling get better and better, and the art is phenomenal.(The Lady Death: Origins, Vol. 2 trade is scheduled for October.)Lady Death: Origins Volume 1 HC OverviewFor the first time, the illustrious history of Brian Pulido's fan-favorite heroine will be collected in a new series of graphic novels - Lady Death: Origins! Featuring breathtaking adventures that have been - until now - out of print, the Origins series is a perfect way for fans to experience the full breadth of gothic fantasy which inspired the new monthly comic book series by Boundless Comics! This initial volume collects the epic "Abandon All Hope" origin story, illustrated by Ron Adrian, introducing readers to a tragic young woman named Hope, whose quest to save her mother's kidnapped soul leads her to a perilous mystical realm...and her transformation into the cold, alluring warrior Lady Death! Also contained within is "Wicked," a tale of blood and sorcery illustrated by Richard Ortiz, providing further insight into the iconic Lady Death and her supporting cast.
