The Awakening of Humanity ReviewFor more than thirty years, Benjamin Creme has disclosed remarkable insights on the nature and scope of the problems facing contemporary humanity. Well before "New Age" turned into a fad and a marketing tool, the British lecturer had identified the conflict between an old and a new order as the crux of our unique postwar condition. Rather, it is a gradual process of engaging humanity in its own salvation. Here spiritual perfection and social responsibility are interchangeable. By saving the starving millions in the world, helping the needy, and protecting the environment, we manifest our divinity and thus save ourselves. The returned Christ will make palpable these truths not simply through teaching but by releasing new energies and unveiling technologies that will solve our most pressing problems. For this to happen, however, humanity has first to show a capacity for listening and the willingness to renounce war and start putting its messy house in order. The modest length and price of "Awakening of Humanity" makes redundant any commentary on its details. I would only advise new readers of Creme's literature not to expect a sensationalist account or a theological treatise. The author is a profound visionary and compassionate thinker on a mission to raise hope for the future. Over the years, he has admirably avoided the extremes of academic arrogance and religious hysteria, presenting his information in a lucid and sober manner. My single concern is that readers accustomed to linear and systematic exposition of ideas might be put off by the book's rather loose structure. I can only remind them that Creme is a painter and thus used to see beginning and end simultaneously.
