House of Prension ReviewIt is rare that a reader can actually laugh knowingly and intone "WTF" at the same time.
Yet this is the case in "House of Prension," Brian Henry's glib reconstruction of a quasi Dickensian world somehow flashed forward.
Many heady ideas float around in this House.
It's as if Thomas Pynchon dropped acid and invited the ghost of Henry James to tea and Noel Coward showed up.
Shades of Coward, author Henry obviously knows he way around a pun (or 3), and his wordplay often reaches ski jump proportions as he creates a world where few have ventured.
Farcical fantasies are not for the faint of heart, but Henry somehow is able to sustain quite a viable narrative.
But Man cannot survive on marzipan alone, and one ultimately this reader craves a bit deeper delve into character development, maybe even a peek through the keyhole of the characters' sex lives.
While Henry's frisson rarely flags, this reader would also have appreciated a bit more grounded approach so as to apply these lessons to the real world (whatever that is).
House of Prension OverviewHouse of Prension is the story of Aulic Prension, the fourteen-year-old younger son of Empress Landau. As Aulic faces his Maturity Rituals, he must cope with the resentments of his older brother Bodin, a stickler for decorum. Aulic takes a skeptical attitude to traditional strictures and the brothers? opposed personalities set them up for an inevitable rivalry. Aulic faces his greatest challenge when he ruins a fishing ritual, casting disgrace on himself. Angered, Bodin and his allies set Aulic an even greater challenge: to journey to the land of the hated Frissen and prove his diplomatic worthiness. Accompanied by two advisors and a young friend, Aulic faces a range of obstacles, including encounters with the nonsensically chanting Roundsongs, the beetle-like recalcitrant Jabbs and the perky fungus sprite Mempy Pinpin. His journey brings him to a face off with spiteful Emperor Ogo Prension where Aulic must use the lessons he?s learned on his journey to survive.
