Buddhism and Christianity in the light of Hinduism ReviewYou have to be interested in the subject to really appreciate this book, and be willing to read it somewhat thoughtfully. I was and I did. Books that give me new perspectives and from which I gain insight and knowledge for me -- are worth reading. This is the reason I give it five stars.
The author is usually associated with the great and revered Hindu mystic and teacher -- Ramana Maharshi.
Arthur Osborne has written a number of books about this sage and was his most devoted Western student for many years until Ramana Maharshi's death.
Osborne states the thesis of this book: "Buddhism and Christianity are the two complimentary aspects of a single process: the provision of a proselytising religion based on a Divine Founder in two forms, advaitic or metaphysical for the East and dualistic or devotional for the West, for the benefit of peoples whose own religions had lost their spiritual potency."
In the course of doing this, the author, among his chapters, devotes one to Hinduism and Buddhism, and another one to Buddhism and Christianity. He shows the ways these three religions are intertwined and the ways in which they seem more distinct from one another.
Humans have experienced the Absolute and developed religions by which in a somewhat unified and disciplined manner he/she can seek and attain that unity with Reality that mankind has a essential need for.
