Sexuality on the Spiritual Path ReviewReviewed by Ralph Lewis and Jane Hoskin`Sex' Baba tells us `is decidedly one of the most important problems with which the human mind is confronted in the domain of duality.'* In this new publication `Sexuality on the Spiritual Path' this `problem' which apparently starts very early in our evolution as an individual drop soul and continues even up to the sixth plane is explored by Don Stevens and others with considerable honesty, sensitivity and depth.
As Baba so eloquently tells us, `Love is the reflection of God's unity in the world of duality'* It appears that we often confuse our desire for sex with the longing for `real' love and unity with God and each other. To help us overcome this inevitable problem Don Stevens invites us to ask ourselves the disarmingly simple question `do you really want to have sex here and now with this person?' the answer could well be that all one really needs is simple warmth and affection. Don recounts a story of a man who seduced countless women but always felt unsatisfied. His analyst suggested he just simply has a cup of coffee and just talks with the next woman he meets, the next day he reports back that for the first time ever he has felt genuinely happy and appreciated!
The role of reason in discriminating and clarifying our needs is essential so that we do not confuse our need for simple human contact, affection and appreciation with our sexual needs. Also that our appreciation of beauty, in male or female form, is not necessarily lustful.Baba does tell us that neither mechanical repression nor wholesale expression will work - we need to treat the issue of sex intelligently and work through the sex sanskaras.
Don poignantly recollects Baba's warmth, particularly demonstrated by the inevitable hug or embraces that Don and others would regularly receive from Baba, often accompanied by a kiss on the cheek or neck, as we too have also witnessed on film when Baba, who so lovingly embraces His lovers and devotees. Don has ascertained that this affectionate and very physical contact with the Avatar could be a possible blue print for us all in the New Humanity. Don has classified this as `Tactual sublimation' as a way for us to loosen and transform the deep-rooted and problematic sanskaras based in our deep-rooted sexual duality.
Within this diverse collection of writing there are a number of stories and essays which are the direct outcome of a Forum held at Myrtle Beach in 2004, which, although originally intended to focus on homosexuality, in fact covers the broader field of all sexuality and relationships. The forum itself is well transcribed so we can share the thinking and dialogue of this important meeting, with an in-depth look at the whole area of sexuality, from the early experiences of the drop soul, through evolution and then on to the later stages of involution and the tricky task of how to tackle the necessity of wiping out of all desires in order to make progress on the path.
The essays on homosexuality examine the misunderstandings and prejudices held by society and different world religions. Unfortunately, some within the Baba world, we learn, also hold this prejudice. Charles Haynes, who met Baba at the age of eight, tells us, in his chapter `Meher Baba and Homosexuality' that even with in the Baba community there are divisions regarding homosexuality, some viewing it as `un-natural' and as a `disobedience to Baba'. Charles rightly points out that although disagreements are inevitable, `that matters of conscience are ultimately between each individual and the Beloved, then we may remember to treat one another with love, fairness and respect.'
Baba apparently never condemned homosexuality but always responded non-judgementally and often with great affection to those who were gay or lesbian in orientation. Several of the essays in this book, particularly those written by Charles Haynes, David Carter, Ed Flanagan, a very touching story from Elias Petriades and Eruch Jesswala's story ` The Hijara', look at this often controversial issue from differing perspectives, but always with intelligence, depth and new and original insight. There is also a superb explanation of different sexual orientations within the context of reincarnation. Each of us carries within us the opposite sexual pole but repressed by an internal psychic barrier. If we have had several incarnations, as a female then although we may have reincarnated as a male the strength of the "female" sanskaras may not be suppressed enough and we will be oriented towards feminine sexuality, albeit in a male body.
The book also covers a heterosexual perspective, with contributions from Marlena Applebaum and Laurent Weichberger in response to quite direct and soul-searching questions posed by Don on their own feelings on sexuality and sublimation with in the context of their own personal relationship with Baba. Issues of inner body awareness helping in the understanding of desire, companionship and sexuality and dealing with the intoxication of love are examined.
`Sexuality On The Spiritual Path' does set up a whole new and potentially dynamic dimension with in our own spiritual thinking, feeling and behaviour as we start to grapple creatively with this part of the inward journey toward God and our `real' selves and must be applauded for that.
Many will find this book controversial and challenging, However, I urge you to read it as life with Baba is challenging and often the area that one finds most difficult is often the very place that one needs to be looking and working with.
