The Weeping Stars: A Frank Belknap Long Collection (Five Frank Long science fiction stories in one volume) ReviewFrank Belknap Long was a noted writer of horror fiction, one of the early acolytes of H.P. Lovecraft. But Long also wrote science fiction and, although he is not much remembered today for his S-F, this Kindle anthology shows that he was quite accomplished in that genre as well.
This collection includes five short stories, one ("The Sky Trap," the weakest of the bunch) from 1941, the other four from 1951-1954. What is notable about them is their humanistic emphasis-- Long focuses not so much on gadgets as on people's reactions to them. The stories deal with relatively common science fiction themes-- human settlers on an alien planet ("The Man the Martians Made"), time travel ("The Man from Time"), alien visitors to earth ("The Calm Man," "The Mississippi Saucer")-- but Long gives the stories a unique twist through his focus on his characters and their emotions. These may not be great stories, but they are certainly well worth reading. The Weeping Stars: A Frank Belknap Long Collection (Five Frank Long science fiction stories in one volume) OverviewNOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, and your ipod e-book reader.'The Weeping Stars' is a collection of stories written by acclaimed science-fiction author, Frank Belknap Long. He explored sociological, political and metaphysical themes in stories dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states.Long was a prolific American writer of horror fiction, fantasy, science fiction, poetry, gothic romance, comic books, and non-fiction. Though his writing career spanned seven decades, he is best known for his horror and science fiction short stories, including early contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos.During his life, Long received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (at the 1978 World Fantasy Convention), the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement (in 1987, from the Horror Writers Association), and the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award (1977).Included in this volume:Story One: The Calm Man - Sally watched the molten gold glow in the sky. Then knew she would not see her son and her husband ever again on Earth. First appeared in Fantastic Universe May 1954.Story Two: The Man from Time - The method by which one man might be pinpointed in the vastness of all Eternity was the problem tackled by the versatile Frank Belknap Long in this story. And as all minds of great perceptiveness know, it would be a simple, human quality he'd find most effective even in solving Time-Space.Story Three: The Man the Martians Made - No mortal had ever seen the Martians, but they had heard their whisperings-without knowing the terrible secret they kept hidden.Story Four: The Mississippi Saucer - Something of the wonder that must have come to men seeking magic in the sky in days long vanished.Story Five: The Sky Trap - Lawton enjoyed a good fight. He stood happily trading blows with Slashaway Tommy, his lean-fleshed torso gleaming with sweat. He preferred to work the pugnacity out of himself slowly, to savor it as it ebbed...This are the original and unabridged versions of these tales. A must-have for science fiction fans!
