Gravel Volume 3: The Last King of England ReviewWell, I don't really know where to begin. This book was just such a mixed bag for me. Since you're reading up on vol. 3 I'm going to assume that you've already read vol. 1 and 2. So keep in mind I'm going to be giving major spoilers for those. This is all basically one big story told in 3 acts. So you kind of have to look at it as a whole. Okay, so in vol. 1 he kills all of the minor 7 and then in vol. 2 pretty much the exact same thing happens except now with the major 7. Now some people complained that it got a bit repetitive, which I suppose it did, but it didn't really bother me too much. After all, why fix it if it isn't broken? Now for the bad part.
See, William Gravel kills people and he is a working class man without many ambitions. That may sound pretty simple but I think those two qualities are pretty much the 2 key traits that define the guy.The problem is, that after the events of vol 2 he is left with A) nobody left to kill, and B) He is now king of the hill. Pretty much the exact opposite of everything that he stands for. That creates a hell of a problem for the writer...one that he chooses to solve in what to me seems the laziest possible way. You'll see what I mean. Now at this point I have to warn. *MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD* So anyways he picked up a handful of...students? acolytes? followers? I'm not sure what the hell to call them really. I'm not sure they do either. OK first of all I didn't really like how these guys just sort of suddenly decided to blindly follow this guy and kill for him, when really they know nothing about him. They even point this out when there talking...and then go ahead and follow anyway. Just kinda seems like sloppy character motivations really. Now having said that, it was still pretty fun seeing him become sort of their mentor and team leader. I thought that had a lot of potential. I was really interested to see where that went. But I suppose it was kinda doomed from the beginning, I mean lets face it another defining character trait is that he is a loner. Now I would have been perfectly fine with the character changing a little bit, just enough to keep the minor 7 going,if only to see how all this new relationships developed, cuz honestly all these new recruits seemed pretty interesting and I was actually starting to like them. But apparently the writer had other plans.
After the first initial round of adventures and introductions with his new recruits, everything just takes a terrible and destructive turn. Basically some new villain appears out of nowhere and essentially undoes everything. Seriously, it's like Warren Ellis just hit a reset button or something. Everyone is killed and pretty much every single power, property,item, portal or contact that he has acquired or used in the past is destroyed. Seriously, nothing is left standing except him. He ends up literally, EXACTLY where he started. It's like the past 3 volumes worth of stories might as well not have happened. It seems like the whole series and all the events therein are rendered meaningless and pointless. It's a slap in the face to the reader. Saying that I feel cheated is a bit of an understatement really. And I so loved this series...
Honestly, my take on it is that it almost seems like this whole story never should have happened. See if you've ever read any of the other previous Gravel stories prior to this series, you know that they were all a lot simpler and more self contained. It was basically just him, killing the hell out of a lot of people because he was ordered to by the government. Pretty simple, but effective. It seems like this series was Warren Ellis's attempt to put the character into more of a real story, complete with twists and turns and change in the world and the character. The major problem appearing when it was obvious that Gravel was a creature that resisted all change. He was a simple straightforward kind of guy that belonged in simple straightforward stories, and it's like Warren realized all of this way too late. Bottom line is that if this character was never really meant to change one iota, then it was not really necessary to put him through all of this. Like I said, he ends up exactly where he started. Like it was all for nothing...honestly I would give this less stars if it weren't for the fact that I actually enjoyed everything in the book quite a bit...up until the point where Warren hits that damn reset button near the very end...it just seems like he backed himself into a corner and didn't know how to resolve everything so he just pulled an Old Testament God and sent down a flood to destroy his creation and start all over. It just seems lazy and poorly planned out. Not at all what you expect from a writer of Warren Ellis's caliber.
