Warren Ellis' Apparat Volume 1 ReviewWarren Ellis tried to figure out how adventure comics would have developed without sixty-odd years of super hero comics. The result is a series of one-shots that follow some of the classic themes of the old action comics. This volume collects the first four.
Science Fiction is up first with a very bizarre tale and amazing graphics (you really have to pay attention to all of the little details in the graphics).
Detective fiction takes an interesting turn with a detective who has a tendency to sleep in dumpsters. He and his new partner have a murder to solve.
The wonder of Pilot heroes follows as a flying ace retires from a team of hero pilots. This one is a little strange as well as being a pilot has little to do with the story. Also the art was unstable with characters looking young one moment and beyond middle age the next and vice versa.
The final story takes the mantle of Doc Savage, The Shadow and The Spider with a different eccentric millionaire fighting crime with the help of strange substances. I felt this was the best overall considering both story and art.
Readers will be a little disappointed to find out how long we might have to wait for any more of these stories and there is also a tendency to want to see more stories about some of these characters (I really liked the detective). Check it out.Warren Ellis' Apparat Volume 1 Overview"Warren Ellis' Apparat Volume 1".

Warren Ellis' Bad Signal Volume 1 ReviewJust in case you thought you were going to get a brilliant Warren Ellis comic with great art, this book isn't it. It's entirely Ellis' written correspondence from his website. So if you want to read pages of Ellis' wry wit and rambling imagination, go for it. It's not bad but isn't as much fun as his comics. If you're looking for a comic book, try the other excellent Apparat comic books "Crecy", "Aetheric Mechanics", "Frankenstein's Womb" or "Apparat, Vol 1".Warren Ellis' Bad Signal Volume 1 OverviewFrom Warren Ellis, the creator of PLANETARY and TRANSMETROPOLITAN, comes one of the internet's most influential commentaries on comic books, culture, and beyond. Warren Ellis' e-mail column "Bad Signal" shows that he is a modern master of the short form essay, as his biting wit makes even the most esoteric of topics into must-read material. By his own admission, BAD SIGNAL is Warren Ellis on the move, emptying his head of thoughts and shoving them into a handheld computer with a wireless modem plugged into it, so that he can instantly bug four thousand people with useless e-mail from public toilets all over the world. This first volume collects his humorous and insightful columns from 2001-2002.

Warren Ellis' Bad World ReviewBad World came as something of a surprise to me. I was expecting a more traditional story; What Writer Warren Ellis delivers is an extended essay/monologue about various and sundry disturbed and disturbing individuals Ellis has (Supposedly) found through the internet. The reader is bombarded with literally dozens of bizarre stories, each more outlandish and horrific than the last, including, but not limited to, Alien Abduction, Cannibalism, Necrophilia, Beastiality, weird Presidential candidates, etc. The art, by Jacen Burrows, is ok; nothing exceptional, but the single-page illustrations and double-page spreads do a decent job of conveying Ellis' ideas. Are the stories you'll encounter in Bad World true? Who knows. In the end, does it really matter? Ellis does a great job of stringing them together, and if you have a high tolerance for disturbing subject matter, you'll probably enjoy Bad World.Warren Ellis' Bad World OverviewJoin Warren Ellis, the creator of TRANSMETROPOLITAN, for a sick descent into the foulest reaches of the world we live in... a world of beauty in the eyes of many, but to a bleeding-edge writer like Mr. Ellis, it's a world filled with evil, sin, decay, and filth. It's a Bad World, indeed. With the skilled assistance of illustrator Jacen Burrows, Ellis explores the far edges of humanity, the people who are hanging onto reality by the thinnest of threads, and those who are completely off their rockers.

Gravel: Never A Dull Day (Signed Hardcover) ReviewI'm surprised no one has reviewed this yet. I'm a fan of a lot of Ellis' more recent work, so after picking up the trade paperback of "Strange Killings: Body Orchard" (which is included in this volume) I decided to pick up this collection. I wasn't disappointed. It's a great little package collecting all of the previous mini series starring LT. Gravel, the combat magician. A very inventive take on magic in modern times. I'm not a big fan of Mike Wolfer's artwork, but he gets the job done in quite cinematic ways.
The only thing that kept this from a full five stars is there was not any introduction, behind the scenes, or bonus material as far as concept sketches, etc from the creators. For a collection of this sort that's a real shame. In fact it's pretty inexcusable. Too bad. If you haven't picked these up yet this is a great way to get them all in one package.

Doktor Sleepless Volume 1: Engines of Desire HC ReviewSo the Doktor is a weird scientist that has stuff going on in the background, somehow he is a form of someone that used to live in the city, and also somehow he is not all of the mad genius controller the fate of the town as he may think he is, but overall, it is a good story so far.
The other characters are not well developed as of yet, but the Doktor and his side kick "Nurse" partake in some witty banter.
The art is good, but anything really special though, but the town itself is beautifully created and described. The townsfolk are shown to be sort of bitter and nihilistic at the fact that the future was not what they were promised. One tag on a building is says "Where's My Jetpack?!" I found that humorous.
The writing is good, typical Warren Ellis and his use of main charismatic, not-so-good main characters. Some of the speeches that the Doktor gives shows a wonderful spark of genius. Oh, did we mention that he hosts his own radio show that the lower-class seem to take as gospel? It is a good show...I think I would listen to it.
Overall, this is a good book if you want to know the story so far. One of the problems with the comics is that he produces to many covers for each issue, making us collectors pay more to own them...it is annoying...
Get the book if you like comics, anti-heroes, dark futuristic stories, mad scientists, or Warren Ellis.Doktor Sleepless Volume 1: Engines of Desire HC OverviewWhere is the future we were promised? Doktor Sleepless, a renegade mad scientist recently back from the supposed dead, will not rest until he tears the city of Heavenside apart in search of that answer. Aided by a sultry and murderous assistant known only as Nurse, he's outraged that the widescale application of his science has not advanced society, but been abused and twisted. From his tower above, he broadcasts intrigue and revolution to a populace of beautiful Shrieky Girls, angry Grinders, and the conspiratorial authorities. Only Sing Watson, his old flame, truly suspects how dangerous things are about to get! The good Doktor has just the prescription for all of society's ills... whether you want it or not! Warren Ellis presents DOKTOR SLEEPLESS, the thematic successor to his critically acclaimed TRANSMETROPOLITAN.

Anna Mercury Volume 1: The Cutter ReviewThis collects the five issue 2008 Avatar Press creator-owned mini-series from writer Warren Ellis and artist Facundo Percio. Anna Mercury is a British secret agent tasked with preventing New Ataraxia from using a weapon of mass destruction (the titular "Cutter") against Sheol, a neighboring civilization. These combatants are on a parallel Earth that had been disturbed by our planet, and now Mercury "boomerangs" to and from this world for brief periods to mitigate the explosive effects. From his striking depictions of the main character to his detailed machines and cityscapes, Percio's art is exemplary and the highlight of this book. Ellis' fun, action-filled plot can also be viewed as a modern geopolitical allegory. He has created a strong character in an intriguing new world that merits further stories. The Volume 2 mini-series is in comic stores now.Anna Mercury Volume 1: The Cutter OverviewPRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Warren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this collection of first action-packed series! Dancing amid the spires of a city called New Ataraxia, there is a woman who can cloud men's minds, leap across buildings as if weightless, unerringly fire twin automatic pistols in the most insane conditions, and disappear in a crowded room. She fights against the political repression of an insane technocratic society, and she comes from a place that no-one in New Ataraxia has ever heard of. And she's got one hour to save the city from itself. A high-octane blend of The Shadow, Tomb Raider, retro-punk science fiction and 21st century Weird Pulp Action, ANNA MERCURY is a headlong adventure serial about a beautiful and mysterious spy-adventurer who is not what she seems.... Anna Mercury Volume 1 features all five of the original issues with art by all-new talent Facundo Percio as well as a special super-sized cover gallery!

Warren Ellis' Dark Blue ReviewA cop on the trail of a dangerous serial killer nearly beats to death a suspect - and that's the least of his departments' worries. The guards rape prisoners and the captain has a heroin addiction. But the cop begins to realise all is not as it seems. Is he losing his mind or is all of this a nightmare? And what's with the frequent repetition of the code "LD50"?
Warren Ellis tells a strong horror mystery story with overtones of noir with a frequent collaborator, the excellent artist Jacen Burrows. The book is quite brief but the story is fascinating and keeps the reader guessing throughout. It's based upon shared drug experiences with the same shamanic drug. Is there a communal place where people who use this drug gather? And what would happen if your body died while your mind was in this place?
It's a great read and a brilliant addition to Ellis' inspiring Apparat imprint. At times horrific, others very trippy, it's a fun comic book from the always interesting Warren Ellis.Warren Ellis' Dark Blue OverviewViolent and disturbed cop Frank Christchurch has too many problems. His partner is convinced that he's mentally ill, his commanding officer is addicted to smack, and he's in pursuit of a killer whom no one else seems interested in catching. The pressure of his savage life is triggering murderous outbursts and hallucinations. Frank Christchurch is on the way down... and he might take everyone with him. From the revolutionary creator and writer of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY, Warren Ellis!

FREAKANGELS HC VOL 01 ELLIS & DUFFIELD SGN ED (Signed Edition, Volume 1) ReviewI love Warren Ellis. However, he's extremely prolific and some of his stuff is certainly better executed than others. My favorites are Planetary and Transmetropolitan.I think Freakangels ranks up there.
I won't bore you with a synopsis that you could find on wikipedia.

Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC ReviewThis collection boasts a large cover gallery in the back containing three sections. There are the five Juan Jose Ryp wrap covers plus additional covers he drew for auxilary issues and special convention issues, and the beautiful Felipe Massafera painted covers that looks good enough to frame ( again all five are included). Lastly there are the special Facundo Percio convention covers in the back that showcase his talent with facial expression.
There are five issues in this collection and the chapter breaks are drawn by Paul Duffield and are double sided with the original basic covers and the Duffield auxilary covers on the back. Each chapter contains Ellis' classic witty banter and jokes, and Facundo Percio's art brings the characters fully to life with expressive faces. Percio's art finds a balance between static dialogue and action scenes. His layouts are not static and use skewed panels to add depth to the layouts. His static panels have the appearance of movement in them, while the action scenes appear to have all the motion illusion that Juan Jose Ryp's or Kohta Hirano's art has. This is highly recommended for Warren Ellis fans and fans of retrofuture sci-fi.Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC OverviewWarren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this collection of first action-packed series! Freakangels, Vol. 2 Reviewvolume 2 of this series was decidedly not as good as the first. i actually had to check it was the same artist as volume 1, 'cuz it was just less visually compelling (though still beautiful, and with a lovely color palette). it's prolly more like a 3.5 star, but i'll round up for keeping me interested enough to get the next one.
builds on previous story and you get to know the characters better, but there is no subtlety to the way things unfold... just BLAM, here's each character's deal. i hear they get better again- i hope so!
Freakangels, Vol. 2 OverviewVolume Two of award-winning author Warren Ellis' ongoing web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here! This installment collects the entire second arc of the post-apocalyptic saga into 144 gorgeous, full-color pages. Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds are living in and defending Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. They've made a new friend, and together they successfully defended their home from raiders--but the post-apocalyptic drowned London that the eleven Freakangels survive in is never a safe place, and never surrounded by friends. Night has only just fallen, but strangers already creep through Whitechapel with the worst of intentions and theweapons to see them through. In FREAKANGELS: VOLUME TWO, we discover just how bad the situation in sunken England has gotten, and we meet the last of the eleven strange Freakangels. But the twelfth, sinister Mark, is still out there somewhere... Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

Scars ReviewIts a tough call, I love warren Ellis and Burrow's creations, but this story doesn't suit Burrows style of artwork sadly. The story is pretty unoriginal, but a solid cop story altogether. However it could of been better in many respects.Scars OverviewHow much of a monster do you have to become to hunt monsters? Detective John Cain is a hard man. He's been working homicides long enough that he can withstand almost anything, even wrenching personal loss. But everyone has a limit, as he discovers when assigned to the investigation of a child killing. It's not enough to be a good cop, to follow the procedure and ensure that scum go to prison. To honor the chilling promise he gave to the dead child's parents -- to find the killer using any means necessary -- Cain will have to cross lines and do whatever it takes to bring bloody justice to the killer.

Do Anything Volume 1 ReviewI feel smarter for having read this. Mostly a little smarter about the murky world of comic book industry and publishing subculture, but also just smarter in general. Through looking very closely at Jack Kirby, famed illustrator, the wider wold of comics, art, expression and meaning comes into focus. While the content is primarily relevant to those interested in comics, this book being almost a biography of Jack Kirby, there is quite a bit of social commentary, exploration of artistic process and fun don't-you-just-hate-bureaucracy moments to keep things interesting for those that are not completely vested in the world of comic books.
But if you have NO interest in comic books, I wouldn't recommend it. If you have an interest but lack of knowledge, get a pen out and start taking notes.
I give this five stars because the writing is superb and it is a fresh treatment of the arts, but along with the above caveat that you probably won't dig this if you don't dig comic books, I would like to add that it may be a little hard for younger readers to grasp some of the social references from the 60s and 70s, though I don't think too much in the book hinges on those references.
Do Anything Volume 1 OverviewThe robot head of Jack Kirby lives on Warren Ellis' desk! It knows everything and is connected to everything. You must obey the robot head of Jack Kirby. There are many ways to look at comics. In this book, we see the medium through the hazy android eyes of Jack Kirby (actually the stolen and repurposed head of the missing Philip K. Dick robot, which Mr. Ellis confesses to swiping off the back of a plane), taking a rattling ghost-train ride through the history of comics. David Bowie, the CIA, mad architects, Will Eisner, Frank Zappa, Tintin, the designer of Skylab, a train station in Paris, Arthur C. Clarke, the circus, the Black Panther Party, and William S. Burroughs: all of these things are connected by Jack Kirby, all part of the secret history of comics, and all illustrating the special nature of the medium as the place where you can do anything.

Warren Ellis' Atmospherics ReviewAs the previous review states, Avatar really lets Warren Ellis cut like nothing Marvel or DC have ever let him before, and Atmospherics is proof of that. A very short graphic novel, Atmospherics deals with a woman claiming to be the lone survivor of a town whose population was massacred by alien beings. So she says, but did she commit these acts herself under the delusion of heroin use? That's the main question as Ellis' interrogation unfolds, and leads to bigger and better things as well. Everything you'd come to expect about Ellis' style is here: his penchant for paranoid feelings, poppy dialogue, and science fact and fiction are all used very nicely here. Ken Meyer provides stark black and white artwork as well, which suits the dark and dreary tone of the book. Ellis also provides an afterword, which finds the author offering a scathing discussion on alien blamed cow mutilations and Communion author Whitley Striber. The only real downside to Atmospherics is that it's over too soon, but the book is still worth picking up for Ellis fans regardless.Warren Ellis' Atmospherics Overview"Warren Ellis' Atmospherics".

Warren Ellis' Blackgas ReviewThis trade comprises the two Black gas minis that came out of Avatar Press last year and the year before.
The first half is pretty good with an interesting story, but the second half that comprises the Black Gas 2 mini is awfull. Ellis has said in interives that he did the book on a dare from the head of Avatar Press. The head of Avatar dared him to write a zombie comic so Ellis did, and it realy shows.
Ellis seemes uninterested in the story after the first mini and phones in a second mini series and ending that mirrors Return of the Living Dead almost exactly. The fact that he copys the ending almost exactly is both depresing and infuriating. It is just lazy, and it surprises me that a writter that prides himself so much for his originality would do that.
Combine that with the fact that the second half moves too fast and has no character development at all, and you end up with a blood and guts book from an author who is capable of so much more. The art is well done and gives a somber menacing edge to the work that helps a great deal, but it gets wasted in the second half as it feels usless. Fumura treats us to huge grotesque orgies of sex and violence(often combined) but it all feels like shock for shock sake. It all feels explotive and painfully nihalistic.
The fact that the books themselves got dealyed so much makes me even more angry with the final product. If you really want a zombie book from avatar try the Escape of the Living Dead or Night of the Living Dead books, they work far better. Of course neither is as good as the Walking Dead from Robert Kirkman, but they are fun reads, which is far more than i can say for this book.
Truely a disapointment.Warren Ellis' Blackgas OverviewWarren Ellis, the creator of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY, unleashes a new kind of zombie horror. A tiny little island off the east coast of America sit on a fault in the underlying tectonic plate. On a night beset by a fierce storm and an earthquake simultaneously, the fault line cracks, releasing something foul from the Earth's guts, blown across the little coastal town of Smoky Island. The only two people on the island who were outside the reach of the black gas are now trapped on a spit of rock with a population that aren't what we'd call "people" anymore. After all, they started eating each other an hour ago... and it's about to get worse.

No Hero ReviewI like these new comic books coming out about "the other side" of superheroes - Garth Ennis' "The Boys" is a good example of the popularity of these kinds of stories. In that book "supes" are policed by a CIA type organisation called "The Boys" who are ordinary people (albeit a bit psycho). But how? They are injected with something that gives them incredible strength so they are a match for the supes. It's a very quick scene where the new guy "Huey" gets injected and then takes on the supes. In Warren Ellis' "No Hero" this transition from ordinary person to superhero is looked at more closely.
When the new guy gets recruited to this superhero organisation who help police the world, he is given a pill that will give him incredible powers. What happens next is detailed in superbly horrific and gory detail by the excellent Juan Jose Ryp. It's a wordless nightmare, a 21st version of Hieronymous Bosch or Dante, but in far more horrifying imagery.
What happens next is the dismantling of the superhero organisation, piece by piece, in deliciously psychotic scenes. Great fun to read, even better to see with Ryp's astonishingly detailed art, with an original take on these new anti-superhero comics. Warren Ellis back on form with this great book.No Hero OverviewForty years ago, a group of superhumans emerged in San Francisco, guided by a man whose unique new drugs gave them incredible powers. For five generations, they've stood for the rights of freedom and safety, and invited other like-minded individuals of sound mind and unflinching dedication to stand with them. To these young men and women, they ask, "How much do you want to be a superhuman?" One young man, obsessed with the need for street justice, wants it badly... perhaps even enough to bring on the last days of an American legend. See, the team is not the only thing that's advanced over the years, and there are no easy victories once their luck finally runs out. A revolution in masked heroes by Warren Ellis, the award-winning creator of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY.

No Hero ReviewThe authors work seems to go in cycles. First a brilliant work (Transmetropolitan) then a lesser work along the same themes that seems to be made up of ideas he couldn't get around to before (Doktor Sleepless). To use an SAT question Transmetropolitan is to Doktor Sleepless as Black Summer is tooooo....that's right No Hero.
A convoluted and rushed plot this story is chock full of throw away characters and half explored ideas. What is truly tragic about this book is that you can see on every page and panel how it could have been better. But what we're left with is a rather entertaining but sparse outline of a third act. Had he explored deeper into anyone of a dozen characters or shown us the history of the Front line/Levellers instead of told us this would have been a richer and more complete story.
Fine for completest but by no means necessary. Read the superior Black Summer if you want to explore a more realistic and horrific take on super heroes. No Hero OverviewForty years ago, a group of superhumans emerged in San Francisco, guided by a man whose unique new drugs gave them incredible powers.

Great quality book, beautifull art, and always great writting from the Master himself Warren Ellis. I bought this for my wife and she loves it, next up is trying to convince my daughter to read it. This is a great book (amd Scott Pilgrim)to indtroduce somebody to comic books, especially somebody not into super heroes. Freakangels, Vol. 3 ReviewThis story is a bit graphic in nature, but the story line is great, and I'm really getting into the characters. This is definitely not a comic for a kid. I want to know what happens next, #3 leaves a lot of cliff-hangers with Kirk and Kaitlyn and well... everyone. I hope #4 comes out soon.Freakangels, Vol. 3 OverviewTwenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years ago, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds live in and defend Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. Fearing the return of an old enemy from beyond their borders, the Freakangels discover that their latest threat comes from inside their ranks, as one of their own breaks the most sacred rule -- never to violate the mind of a person under their protection. Gunplay and a telekinetic confrontation ensue, distracting the group... and leading to a face-to-face confrontation with Mark, the exiled Freakangel who seeks bloody retribution. The third chapter in award-winning author Warren Ellis' post-apocalyptic web comic series!

Freakangels Volume 1 Hardcover Review(Excerpt from my original review on ComicImpact.com)
The FREAKANGEL series is best summarized by its own introduction: "23 years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years ago, the world ended. This is the story of what happened next."
These "twelve strange children" are the now 20-something FreakAngels - a naturally genetically-improved breed of human with magnificent psychic capabilities and gritty sex appeal. And who, as we eventually gather through dialogue clues, are the ones actually responsible for the state of the partially water-submerged state of the world.
As the FreakAngels govern and protect London's Whitechapel-based community of post-apocalypse survivors with their extrasensory talents, they face rival gangs of survivors who pine after their agricultural advancements, weaponry, technology and property, and are consistently challenged by rebellion (and even attempted murder) among their own FreakAngel kind.
The dialogue in this series is most literally some of the best I've read in a graphic novel, maximizing Ellis' character development, storyline, and signature revisits to extropianism. The characters are precious, real and love/hateable. I especially adore Karl, the agri-bloke who minds the gardening and produce, and who dons a tinfoil hat to keep the other FreakAngels out of his thoughts. And then there's the powerful female, Sirkka, who attempts to reinvent the societal notion of romantic relationships by harboring a harem of sexually subservient men and women.
Each FreakAngel comes with his or her own super-abilities and personalities, using their specific talents (food production, medical services, engineering capabilites) to sustain Whitechapel.
"Newbie" illustrator Paul Duffield amazes with the portrayal of these mysterious folk: glowing purple eyes, fine, intricate lines and a type of grayscale/violet shading that successfully casts a cowering, gloomy shadow of Judgment Day tragedy over the entire yarn.
If you're more of a superheroes type of comic fan, I still suggest you perusing this series; it's a magnificent mix of steampunk, super powers, adventures and heroics.

Six years ago, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds live in and defend Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. When a dazed, gun-toting girl appears on the outskirts with a deadly grudge against the self-proclaimed Freakangels, the kids realize that an old enemy is still alive beyond the safety of their borders... a twelfth psychic child, evil and exiled, who can program human minds to hate, and send his private, pirate armies into Whitechapel for revenge. The first chapter in award-winning author Warren Ellis' post-apocalyptic web comic series!
