ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) ReviewIn Neonomican No. 2 Alan Moore is at almost self-parody, and if it weren't for the obvious pretentiousness, one would think it was intentional.
The characters don't speak like real people, Their dialogue sounds more like urban intellectuals discussing Lovecraft at a college forum, not cops trying to solve a crime. The dialogue gets excruciating when they disguise themselves as potential cult members in order to infiltrate an H.P. Lovecraft inspired sex-club, that winds up being more.
Of course, no one should be surprised by the inclusion of a rape scene. Moore has rape in almost all his stories, it's like his signatures. Sure, he says he's trying to show the mistreatment of women, but this reads more like a porn, especially the dialogue during the scene. It's unpleasant, but it's more like "sheesh, another Moore rape scene" instead of "oh my god, it's so brutal."
The story itself is essentially a cop vs. murderous cult story. Aside from the cult worshiping Lovecraft's creations, it doesn't deviate too far from other such stories, at least, not so far. I'm sticking through the series, but there's not anything that makes me want to go back and read it.
Wouldn't recommend it.ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) Overview

Warren Ellis' Dark Blue ReviewA cop on the trail of a dangerous serial killer nearly beats to death a suspect - and that's the least of his departments' worries. The guards rape prisoners and the captain has a heroin addiction. But the cop begins to realise all is not as it seems. Is he losing his mind or is all of this a nightmare? And what's with the frequent repetition of the code "LD50"?
Warren Ellis tells a strong horror mystery story with overtones of noir with a frequent collaborator, the excellent artist Jacen Burrows. The book is quite brief but the story is fascinating and keeps the reader guessing throughout. It's based upon shared drug experiences with the same shamanic drug. Is there a communal place where people who use this drug gather? And what would happen if your body died while your mind was in this place?
It's a great read and a brilliant addition to Ellis' inspiring Apparat imprint. At times horrific, others very trippy, it's a fun comic book from the always interesting Warren Ellis.Warren Ellis' Dark Blue OverviewViolent and disturbed cop Frank Christchurch has too many problems. His partner is convinced that he's mentally ill, his commanding officer is addicted to smack, and he's in pursuit of a killer whom no one else seems interested in catching. The pressure of his savage life is triggering murderous outbursts and hallucinations. Frank Christchurch is on the way down... and he might take everyone with him. From the revolutionary creator and writer of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY, Warren Ellis!

Garth Ennis' 303 ReviewThe story "303" is told from the POV of a Russian Soldier who is leading a team to investigate a private U.S. plane that has crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. The mystery regarding the crash arises when Americans dcline offers of assistance from nighboring countries such as Britain. So, basically this piques the interest of the British and the Russians as they set out to investigate the wrecage with the Americans on the way to safeguard their secret. What ensues is a bloody battle within the three factions and the death of innocent villagers as the Americans carpet-bomb a nearby village to preserve their secret. But at the end, the old Russain soldier survives and what he discovers entails a deal between the American government and a private corporation regarding rebuilding placns for Afghnistan, Iraq and eventually Iran and N. Korea. The soldier then sets out for the United States specifically Texas with a goal of his own. That's as far as I am going to go with the plot without spoiling anything.
In this book Ennis uses the protagonist, the Russian soldier as a vehicle for exploring and commenting on the dark side of war. He comments on the present and past squirmishes between Afghanistan and the West. He also delievers a shocking and controversial ending which I honestly did not see coming. The book is well written and represents another solid tale questioning war morality a la Ennis' Unknown Soldier.
Let's talk about the art. It complements the story very well and does its job to convey the story. It gets a bit gory at times but this is after all a war story so, shouldn't come as a surprise. The art itself is clean and crisp. Jacen Burrows is a great artist and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
If you want to read a story that will leave you thinking, my recommendation is to pick this book up.Garth Ennis' 303 OverviewDeep in the mountains of Afghanistan, a dozen Russian special forces soldiers race their British opponents for a secret neither of them can imagine. The Russian leader, a war-weary colonel who knows no other life but conflict, carries old ghosts that refuse to let him be. But the battle that awaits him deep in this ancient land will change his life forever, and send him on a violent journey no sane man would contemplate. The ultimate soldier meets his destiny, in a tale from Garth Ennis, the creator of PREACHER.

Scars ReviewIts a tough call, I love warren Ellis and Burrow's creations, but this story doesn't suit Burrows style of artwork sadly. The story is pretty unoriginal, but a solid cop story altogether. However it could of been better in many respects.Scars OverviewHow much of a monster do you have to become to hunt monsters? Detective John Cain is a hard man. He's been working homicides long enough that he can withstand almost anything, even wrenching personal loss. But everyone has a limit, as he discovers when assigned to the investigation of a child killing. It's not enough to be a good cop, to follow the procedure and ensure that scum go to prison. To honor the chilling promise he gave to the dead child's parents -- to find the killer using any means necessary -- Cain will have to cross lines and do whatever it takes to bring bloody justice to the killer.

Alan Moore's The Courtyard (Color Edition) ReviewThis book blew my mind! Unlike most people who probably read it, I had no idea it was a Lovecraftian piece, just that it was Alan Moore's first horror comic in something like a decade. So as I read it I was confronted with a vaguely unsettling sense of familiarity, until I realized at the end exactly what this monstrosity was and started over from the beginning! Notes in Yuggoth Cultures #3 (another Lovecraftian collection by Moore) reveal that The Courtyard was originally intended as part of a novel (Yuggoth Cultures) wherein he treated Lovecraft's 36 sonnet "Fungi From Yuggoth" cycle as "literary fungi" (basically taking each sonnet and writing a story based on or inspired by it) So this is NOT like the many lovecraft pastiches out there which just invent more extraterrestrial deities, it's Alan Moore's warped take on Lovecraft's universe. There's even some mystical concepts worked into the tapestry, the like of which might be somewhat familiar to Promethea readers, except they're twisted to fit a very Lovecraftian end...I must have read this thing four or five times by now, and each time I read it I pick up on things I didn't notice or didn't understand before. I don't have the companion (yet!) but I'm sure it enhances the reading immensely...Alan Moore's The Courtyard (Color Edition) OverviewJust in time for the sequel in 2009, Alan Moore's haunting masterpiece, The Courtyard, is available in color for the first time! The most celebrated writer in the industry, Alan Moore, teams up with brilliant artist Jacen Burrows, to unleash this timeless tale of Lovecraftian psychological horror.FBI man Aldo Sax has an amazing service record with the FBI. His legendary skills at piecing together the most baffling of cases has gotten him assigned to what may be his most confusing case yet.Several murders - no, more like lethal dismemberments - from the most unlikely of suspects just don't addd up. And what few leads there are, all point to The Courtyard. This special collected edition of the series features an introduction by Garth Ennis!

Garth Ennis' Chronicles Of Wormwood ReviewPhenomenal!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely phenomenal!!!!
Ennis' closest series to "Preacher", and easily his most hilarious yet!!! (which is saying a lot)
I can personally guarantee you'll laugh until your eyes drown in tears,
till your guts split from your sides, your lungs deflate, and you suffocate on your own laughter.
This title is just that amazing!!!
There's all kinds of sex, & blood,
a reluctant Antichrist and his talking rabbit,
strategically-placed genitalia, more sex, booze,
oceans of blasphemy, plans for armageddon,
a wild-road-trip straight into the heart of the underworld,
even more blood, a sexually-crazed pope, Judas, Jesus, Joan of Arc,
and of course, the roads of Hell.... which are paved in mimes.
The art is clean & crisp courtesy of Jacen Burrows who also worked with Ennis on 303 for the same "Avatar" label.
And the colors are nothing short of amazing.
If you know the name Garth Ennis, you already know what kind of story you're in for.
But beware, none of his tails have ever been so ridiculously funny.
If you want to laugh,
and you don't mind sex, booze, blood, & blasphemy,
this title is your unholy grail.
