The Book of Three, Volume 2 (Charmed (Simon Spotlight)) ReviewI have both books and I found the first book to be a drag. Boring and uninspired, with a lot of unoriginal content.
The second, I'm extremely glad to say, is a much better improvement. The prologue by the late Aaron Spelling is enough to keep you interested till the end of the book. Brad Kern also makes an appearance, and all the newer content in this sequel is much-needed and very much welcome.
Besides the episode guide, there's also a who's-who of potions, spells demons and other creatures in the world of magic and witchcraft. As well, though the photos can be found on Google and Yahoo! the rest of the content easily makes up for it.
Much better than the first, and definitely worth your money. The Book of Three, Volume 2 (Charmed (Simon Spotlight)) Overview

Mathematics Education for a New Era: Video Games as a Medium for Learning ReviewThe use of games in K-12 math education is growing fast, and respected mathematician Keith Devlin uses this book to set out his vision of how this movement will grow and become more influential. I really enjoyed Devlin's accessible style, and appreciated his focus on 'Mathematical Thinking' rather than pure arithmetic, a common problem with the existing generation of math games. Devlin seems to play an awful lot of World of Warcraft, an online MMO, and this seems to influence a lot of his observations. My own belief is that casual math games, of the type provided by Mangahigh.com, are a more flexible medium for math education, and that combining an MMO with math could be an overwhelming task, with unreliable results. Devlin gives lots of interesting insights, although he sometimes relies overly on James Paul Gee's seemingly endless rules for education games. I enjoyed this book, and will look out for further publications from this author.Mathematics Education for a New Era: Video Games as a Medium for Learning OverviewStanford mathematician and NPR Math Guy Keith Devlin explains why, fun aside, video games are the ideal medium to teach middle-school math. Aimed primarily at teachers and education researchers, but also of interest to game developers who want to produce videogames for mathematics education, Mathematics Education for a New Era: Video Games as a Medium for Learning describes exactly what is involved in designing and producing successful math educational videogames that foster the innovative mathematical thinking skills necessary for success in a global economy.Read the author's monthly MAA column Devlin's Angle

Synthesis (Star Trek: Titan #6) ReviewSwallow's entry in to the STAR TREK: TITAN series is an interesting twist on sentient machines and AI, along with an original threat that is comparable with other "high concept" sci-fi novels out there. Combined with Swallow's excellent capture of the crew's voices and wonderful drama, SYNTHESIS is a novel that lives up to the core values of TREK: the wonder of exploration and adventure. Highly recommended.Synthesis (Star Trek: Titan #6) OverviewThe Starship Titan continues on her outward voyage of discovery. Ranging farther and farther from Federation space, Captain William Riker and the crew look forward to living Starfleet's mission: seeking out new life, discovering new civilizations. Striking a "sandbank" -- a spatial distortion -- the Titan is knocked out of warp, her crew shaken up but uninjured. Titan has stumbled across a battlefield, and floating in it, shattered and in pieces, are the remains of a ship. Searching for survivors, they discover the ship never had a crew. The away team removes the computer core, looking for answers. Once the device is restored, it becomes clear this is not just a computer, but a thinking, reasoning artificial intelligence. It identifies itself as SecondGen White-Blue, and it comes from a civilization composed entirely of sentient computers. Eons ago these artificial intelligences were charged to be the first line of defense against The Null -- a destructive force so all-consuming that generation upon generation have waged unending war trying to find a way to beat back this terror. Captain Riker offers to assist them, but years of war have left the AIs distrustful and suspicious, especially of organics. The tide of the battle is turning, and The Null is winning. Set free, it will destroy everything in this system and then, unchecked, spread its mindless destruction into the heart of the Federation.

Avatar: The Last Airbender 1 (Avatar: The Last Airbender (del Rey)) ReviewIt used to be that the Avatar would keep the balance of the world, but everything went wrong when the Fire Nation declared war, wanting to dominate the globe. The Avatar should have been able to stop this, but he...disappeared.
One hundred years pass. The war is still going on, and some believe that the Avatar will come back and save everyone. Until that day happens, they are living in a very dangerous world.

After this rather dramatic opening, the story segues into the lives of Katara and Sokka, a sister and brother in the Water Tribe. They live in the South Pole, where Katara is the only waterbender, something she takes seriously. Her brother, Sokka, is the immature one.

When Katara sees someone frozen within the ice, she quickly frees the person. That person turns out to be 12-year-old Aang, who believes he's only been there a few days, despite the evidence he's been there about a hundred years. Katara has to update him on what's been going on in the world, and he's shocked when he learns.

Not too far away, Prince Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation, sees the light created by Aang's being freed from the iceberg. Prince Zuko is convinced that this means Aang is the returning Avatar and will do whatever he can to stop the boy. Aang, meanwhile, is oblivious of this development.

Aang doesn't seem like an all-powerful Avatar. He's a happy-go-lucky kid who enjoys soaring around on his flying bison. While Prince Zuko prepares to fight, Aang meets the other people of the Water Tribe and shows them his airbending skills.

This short graphic novel is aimed for children and is the first part of a series. Indeed, it ends with a cliffhanger, enticing readers to pick up the next volume. A good air of mystery is already going on with the connection of Aang and the legendary Avatar. Young fans of the cartoon are prime examples for an audience and it could be a good way to help elementary students practice their reading while enjoying a fun adventure story. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular television show, and its familiarity will likely help it get kids interested in picking up a copy. All of the illustrations are in color, and the story is followed by several pages explaining the different Tribes in the story.
-- Danica DavidsonAvatar: The Last Airbender 1 (Avatar: The Last Airbender (del Rey)) OverviewAt the South Pole, a lone water tribe village struggles to survive. Young waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescue a mysterious boy named Aang, who is an airbender—a race of people no one has seen in a century. Soon, everyone discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now it's up to Katara and Sokka to make sure that Aang faces his destiny: to save the world!
