Escape Of The Living Dead Volume 1 ReviewIt is three years after the events portrayed in Night Of The Living Dead. The plague brought a lot of hardship but people are rebuilding their lives. It is then that it is discovered that a rogue government man has been studying the zombies and still has some active. They pull a raid on his lab in the country and try to put a stop to his work.
But the mad scientist was already transporting some zombies to another facility. When thieves break into this truck the zombies are released and their horror begins again. It is in the outskirts of a small town where things come together as a handfull of people discover the zombies are back. They need to fight them off, survive, and get the word out before things get totally out of hand.
There has been a new resurgence of zombie tales in books, movies and comics. This is one of the best I have seen in comics (right up there with The Walking Dead). There was some similarity with Romero's Land of the Dead in that we keep focusing on a specific zombie but otherwise this is fresh and new. The art is pretty good and consistent while the plotting is steady and inevitable. If you are a fan of the original Night of the Living Dead then you will have to check out this sequel from one of its creators.Escape Of The Living Dead Volume 1 OverviewIt is 1971, and it's been three years since the blood soaked night that the dead rose from their graves, attacking and devouring the living. Now, the legacy of that horrific and unexplained event is about to be unleashed once again upon an unsuspecting world. But this time, there may be no escape for those in the terrifying clutches of the cannibalistic living dead! Hidden within the concrete walls of a secret medical research lab, someone has been studying the last remaining undead remnants of the marauding zombie army. Unleashed by the untimely intervention of a group of road weary bikers looking for an easy score, the walking dead renew their gut ripping campaign of terror. As each member of a rural community dies in the grotesque feeding frenzy of the zombies, so does the nightmare army grow as half-eaten victims rise up to join the ranks of the undead. Can anything possibly contain the contagion being spread by the escape of the living dead?

George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead Just a Girl One-Shot Review'Night of the Living Dead: Just a Girl' is a one shot graphic novel featuring a story by 'Night of the Living Dead' co-write John A.Russo.
The artwork and the dialogue are both first rate, but the major problem with this piece is Russo's story and his complete retcon of the characters of Harry and Helen Cooper. Here Harry is presented as a completely hostile madman who runs an unsuccessful dry cleaning business(??!!). Although his profession was never specified in the original story, I think that it was clear that he was a very low level businessman or salesman. Quite frankly, Cooper, as he is present here, is certainly not someone who would be working with the wider public due to his irrational and hostile manner.
Helen Cooper is presented as a weakling, in total conflict with her assertive personality in the original film.
Karen Cooper is shown as an abandoned child taken from the orphanage (??!!) by the Coopers, so that Harry can have someone to work for him for free at his dry cleaners (??!!).
The narrative presents Karen's attack on her parents (when she turns into a ghoul) as a revenge story, when it has long been established that Ghouls are operating on instinct and the desire for warm flesh, not out of a desire to settle a grudge.
In the original film, Harry Cooper is presented as a difficult man who is essentially a control freak with an attitude problem, but a man who also loved and was worried about his injured daughter. He was a man who was cowardly and petty in the worst of situations, but he bears little resemblance to the amoral, hate filled lunatic charactiture that is presented in these pages.
Helen's portrayal as a week willed mouse terrified of Harry's mood swings is also a total contradiction.
The 1990 'Night of the Living Dead' remake also featured a hostile, cartoon Cooper which was all the more surprising given that it was scripted by George A. Romero himself.
As with his wrong headed novels, cinematic atrocities such as the 30th Anniversary edition of 'Night of the Living Dead' (which featured an over 60 year old William Hinzman reprising his role of the 30 year old graveyard ghoul in footage newly filmed by Russo) and the totally incoherent 'Children of The Living Dead', Russo, once again, proves that he incapable or unwilling to write anything that makes sense or possesses artistic merit.
The graphic novel would have been more interesting had the characters not been the Coopers, but some generic dysfunctional family.
The story itself is fairly solid, but the re-imaging of NOTLD characters ruins it.
Recommended for Night of the Living Dead completists and zombie comic fans only.George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead Just a Girl One-Shot Overview

Joe R. Lansdale And Timothy Truman's On the Far Side with Dead Folks ReviewJoe Lansdale is one of the best horror writers in the business today and it's great to see someone putting out comic adaptations of his stories. His graphic and visceral style is well-suited to the comics. This tale is based on a classic Romero-esque zombie story he wrote called "On the Far Side of the Cadillac Desert with Dead Folks". It's sort of a Dawn of the Dead meets Omega Man type story. Lansdale provides an introduction in the book that features are by Tim Truman, best known for his Grimjack series for First Comics back in the 1980's. Lansdale touts Truman as the finest comic artist in the business. That may be stretching things a tad bit but Truman is very good. Oddly though, while the full page illustrations in this book by Truman are quite gorgeous, the actually story art is somewhat bland and has a rushed look to it. It's done strictly in black and white with out any grays or even zip-a-tone to give the art and depth or shading and Truman's usual fine line work is missing.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus was released causing the dead to return to life to feed on the living. Pretty standard stuff there. A bounty hunter enters a desert strip club where they actually have nude female zombies as the entertainment. Their mouths are sealed shut so they can't bite and the sign outside advertises them as "perfumed and maggot-free". Nice...The bounty hunter is after a murderer named Calhoun and after a brief brawl, he takes his prey into custody. While driving through the desert they're attacked by a tank-like vehicle and captured by a band of zombies and fanatical nuns who serve a man who calls himself Lazarus. This man, we discover, is the one who actually created the virus that spread throughout the world. He's now using the blood of those not yet affected to try and find a cure. Lazarus has found a way to control the zombies and they now worship him as a God. With the help of one of the nuns who knows Lazarus is mad and wants out, the three escape into the desert for the final, grim climax to the story.
Like much of Landsdale's work, this is a raw, bloody, and bleak tale. There's no heroic figures here to root for. The story is short but intense. The idea of lap-dancing zombies is thoroughly bizarre but probably quite accurate if a situation like this ever came to pass. Using a Disney-style theme park as the lair of Lazarus and his zombies was a nice little dig as well. I'll give the story five stars but I still think the art could have been a bit better, especially having seen Truman do so much outstanding work over the years. This one is definitely for mature readers.
Reviewed by Tim JansonJoe R. Lansdale And Timothy Truman's On the Far Side with Dead Folks OverviewWayne is a bounty hunter, but he has the bad luck to be one in the middle of a desert filled with the undead. Still, if he wants to get paid, he needs to bring in his man... so dead folks best get out of his way if they know what's good for 'em. But being dead, they clearly don't. The cult favorite team of Joe R. Lansdale and Timothy Truman are back together for the first time in years, bringing all the hilarious insanity and violence that made their Jonah Hex series modern classics. Except this time, the kid gloves are off as they deliver more mayhem, death, and (of course) zombies per page than any other graphic novel on the market!

Escape Of The Living Dead: Resurrected ReviewEscape of the Living Dead-Resurrected was, I presumed, a continuation of the Escape Of The Living Dead Volume 1. Instead, this book includes everything in that original book plus several new chapters. After purchasing the original probably two years ago I was pretty upset when I opened this book up today after receiving it only to discover that half of it was something I already had. Just be forwarned. You have no need to acquire the other trade paperback by Avatar to get what I am guessing is the complete story up to this point.
This story, which is supposed to be an addendum to the original Night of the Living Dead, takes place a few years after the original zombie plague in western Pennsylvania. A hidden research facility has been experimenting with zombies and some have escaped. Essentially we get to see a repeat of what happened with the movie here. The first story, the one also included in the other book, is reasonably solid and entertaining but the additional chapters, which I will describe as the "hippy" version of a zombie invasion introduces us more thoroughly to "Deadhead" the seemingly intelligent biker zombie who leads the other zombies on a quest to destroy and devour as many people as possible. A group of hippy's bus breaks down near a swamp and suddenly free love has become a free lunch for the undead. Add on top of that a flash flood that has wiped out Johnstown, PA and you get plenty of floating zombies swimming up to take down those trying to survive Mother Nature's wrath as well.
The drawings are okay but the story is not really compelling. There is a tremendous amount of gratuitous nudity, which is not necessarily a turn off but as I said, it was gratuitous. I am not sure I was at all interested in what happened to any of the characters. They were all groovy stoners, dude, which is not a big deal, but that is just it: that is all any of them were. They were stereotypes. Well, except for the fact that all the women had bodies that were perfection and the men all had washboard abs. Lets just say the folks who draw these hippies must have assumed they all had hippy dippy gym memberships and modeling contracts. Far out, dude!
Anyway, as a zombie fan who has really enjoyed the varied graphic contributions out there, I felt compelled to acquire this one. Again, the first part is reasonably entertaining and I gave a review of it back when I bought it. The additional chapters were not all that impressive. I am not sure how gung ho I will be to get the next installment when the put it into trade paperback form.Escape Of The Living Dead: Resurrected OverviewIn 1968, a blood-soaked night of terror began when the dead rose from their graves to devour the living. In the three years since, horrible experiments have taken place deep inside the concrete walls of a secret medical facility. Now, the untimely intervention of unwitting authorities sets free the dea to walk among the living once more. Can anything possibly stop this new, gut-ripping tide of carnage? John Russo, the co-creator of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, brings his new zombie masterpiece to comics, aided by horror comic legend Mike Wolfer.

Warren Ellis' Blackgas ReviewThis trade comprises the two Black gas minis that came out of Avatar Press last year and the year before.
The first half is pretty good with an interesting story, but the second half that comprises the Black Gas 2 mini is awfull. Ellis has said in interives that he did the book on a dare from the head of Avatar Press. The head of Avatar dared him to write a zombie comic so Ellis did, and it realy shows.
Ellis seemes uninterested in the story after the first mini and phones in a second mini series and ending that mirrors Return of the Living Dead almost exactly. The fact that he copys the ending almost exactly is both depresing and infuriating. It is just lazy, and it surprises me that a writter that prides himself so much for his originality would do that.
Combine that with the fact that the second half moves too fast and has no character development at all, and you end up with a blood and guts book from an author who is capable of so much more. The art is well done and gives a somber menacing edge to the work that helps a great deal, but it gets wasted in the second half as it feels usless. Fumura treats us to huge grotesque orgies of sex and violence(often combined) but it all feels like shock for shock sake. It all feels explotive and painfully nihalistic.
The fact that the books themselves got dealyed so much makes me even more angry with the final product. If you really want a zombie book from avatar try the Escape of the Living Dead or Night of the Living Dead books, they work far better. Of course neither is as good as the Walking Dead from Robert Kirkman, but they are fun reads, which is far more than i can say for this book.
Truely a disapointment.Warren Ellis' Blackgas OverviewWarren Ellis, the creator of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY, unleashes a new kind of zombie horror. A tiny little island off the east coast of America sit on a fault in the underlying tectonic plate. On a night beset by a fierce storm and an earthquake simultaneously, the fault line cracks, releasing something foul from the Earth's guts, blown across the little coastal town of Smoky Island. The only two people on the island who were outside the reach of the black gas are now trapped on a spit of rock with a population that aren't what we'd call "people" anymore. After all, they started eating each other an hour ago... and it's about to get worse.

Absolution HC Vol 01 ReviewAbsolution is a concept we've seen before, but a super-powered spin, some great twists and interesting characters make this graphic novel a must read. The story is familiar: John Dusk, good cop overcome by the horrors and evils he has witnessed, is pushed over the edge and allows a murderer to die. At first overcome by guilt, killing criminals becomes easier and easier, until he gets in over his head and his world crumbles around him.
What sets this tale apart from other good-cop-gone-bad stories is that Dusk is a superhero, called an "enhancile," in a world where those with similar abilities serve as a special branch of law enforcement. His particular power allows him to project a telekinetic aura, with which he can manipulate the world around him.
Dusk's transformation is beautifully done. He stares off into the distance during barbecues, his mind drifting back to the horrors he has witnessed. He sees the tortured images of innocents he failed to rescue on the faces of his loved ones. When he kills, he does so for justice, not because it makes him feel good. His actions are to protect his loved ones and his community from the monsters who live among us. His actions, while reprehensible, are understandable in this context.
Apart from keeping his extracirricular activities hidden from his homocide detective girlfriend, Dusk must also contend with The Technocrat, a criminal enhancile capable of creating impossible technology. The Technocrat knows about Dusk's "hobby," and is blackmailing him and forcing him to kill specific targets. Their climactic battle made my jaw drop with the ingenius use of Dusk's abilities.
While Dusk and Technocrat have unique powers, the other enhanciles in the book are just as interesting. Alpha B!tch and The Servant, Dusk's teammates, both possess incredible strength and durability. Despite her name, Alpha is actually a very kind, strong willed woman in a loving marriage. The Servant gains his powers from his faith, and acts as a team chaplain. It sounds cheesy, but is used to discuss the ethics of Dusk's decisions, and is a great device. These characters are only a few of the well developed cast found in Absolution.
Aside from a great story, the art is awesome. I would reread each page several times over, drinking in the details and flourishes in each panel. The splash pages are incredible, and bullets ricochet off Alpha and Dusk's aura while they use their own powers to cause all kinds of delightful carnage for your eyes to feast on. However, the art isn't perfect. In some panels, the characters faces don't convey the proper emotion, and in others they appear to be drugged or half asleep. Regardless, the art is very engaging and detailed.
Absolution is a great book, and even though it says "Volume 1," it is a complete story with room for continuation. Definitely worth a buy if you're a fan of nontraditional superhero stories, and are looking for a book which raises questions about capital punishment and the authority of police officers.
Just a quick warning, this is not a kid's book. There are several detailed depictions of gore and violence, drug references, and sexual situations in the book. A mature reader will have no problem with these, but it is not appropriate for little johnny.Absolution HC Vol 01 OverviewYou've seen Christos Gage's work for Marvel, WildStorm, IDW and others, but you've never seen his imagination unleashed with absolutely no restrictions...until now.ABSOLUTION introduces John Dusk, a superhero in a world where they're a sanctioned arm of law enforcement. But this veteran hero has been scarred by his exposure to man's infinite capacity for evil, and he's seen one too many perpetrators escape justice. One day he crosses the line...lets a murderer die...and discovers it feels good.Surrounded by sociopaths, both human and superhuman, who he knows will prey on others if they're not stopped--permanently-- how far will he go, knowing every step he takes puts him further on a collision course with his teammates Alpha and The Servant, not to mention his homicide detective girlfriend?Drawing on his experience writing for TV crime dramas like Law & Order: SVU, and his years of acclaimed work on comics like G.I. Joe: Cobra, StormWatch: PHD, and Avengers: The Initiative, Gage and artist Roberto Viacava bring you a riveting, no-punches-pulled saga that fans of shows like The Shield and Dexter, or comics such as Powers and Sleeper, won't be able to put down.John Dusk wants to be forgiven... but he doesn't want to stop.

Night of the Living Dead, Vol. 2 ReviewFor those who have read the first Night of the Living Dead graphic novel collection, you will find this to be a worthy successor. If you have never read the comics themselves and have simply waited for the collections to come out (as I did), then you should know that the second Night of the Living Dead collection does not expand upon the stories from the first edition, but rather begins a whole new story, one involving the outbreak of the living dead right in the middle of a large scale war protest during Vietnam, and getting caught in the middle are National Guardsmen called out to keep order. Although that would certainly be relevant subject matter for the time, I did walk away thinking that it was a thinly veiled commentary on the Iraq War, and commentaries about war have gotten a little old. That being said, the artwork and character development is as good as the first, as is the gore and combat against the dead. The characters are believable and you do feel something when some of them meet ghastly deaths. But as in any story, you root for some and against some others. Also, as in the first Night of the Living Dead collection, there is a great deal of gratuitous nudity, but then, that's not usually a bad thing. Admittedly, there is not much here that improves upon the first edition, but as long as it maintains the standard, which it does, you will enjoy this and it will become a good addition to your collection. Again, the only drawback is that sometimes, I just want a good zombie story. If I want social commentary, I'll watch CNN.Night of the Living Dead, Vol. 2 OverviewThe most horrifying night in American history continues as the next chapter of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is revealed by writers Mike Wolfer (GRAVEL, WOLFSKIN) and John Russo, the co-writer of the original film classic! Set on the fateful evening in 1968 when shocking reports flood the airwaves with accounts of the dead rising up to kill the living, officials in Washington struggle to quell the panic-stricken public as thousands of anti-war protesters converge on Capitol Hill. With the National Guard spread impossibly thin to deal with civil unrest, Washington is completely unprepared as an unstoppable army of the undead brings its bloodthirsty reign of terror to the steps of the White House!

Night of the Living Dead TP ReviewThe movie Night of the Living Dead came out in 1968 and through its creators John Russo and George Romero, the movie created the template that future zombie movies would be made and judged. While both would go on to do other zombie projects in their careers, and be the standard that their work would forever be judged by.
However, no matter where a story starts, all characters have their own backstory to them, most of which never ends up in the primary story. So it goes with "Night Of The Living Dead", and despite writing two novels in this universe (see Undead), it would take until 2009 and 2010 for John Russo to come back and do some major writing for his story. And that is to write an eight chapter, braided graphic novel that tells both the backstory of the initial plague days and the backstories behind the characters that populated the movie. Although it isn't clear as to how much input Russo actually had in this book's creation, and how much is from Mike Wolfer. Some editorial words on the matter would have been appreciated.
Starting off as series of comic books, this book collects the first series of books, and all of the variant covers, many of which are poster worthy. Chapter One has artwork by Sebastian Fiumara and tells the story of Tammy, her date Mike and their friend Alex, who was stood up by Christine (who we'll meet later), who are out drinking in the nearby woods when they have a run-in with the resurrected. It isn't pretty.
Chapter Two is where the stories start getting really interesting. It's the day after the first chapter and Christine is getting dressed for her job while waking up her grandmother. She leaves for her job with her boyfriend Don, while at the same time that a tour bus that is travelling through Willard goes off the road, killing all aboard, then the dead rise.
In a nearby cemetery two gravediggers are burying a dead man when he rises. This is the primary zombie that we see throughout the original movie (see customer images. The surviving gravedigger flees to a nearby house, where Christine's grandmother is. Some of the bus zombies will lay siege to the house, while some will end up at the Beekman's Diner where Don and Christine work, and where Ben has stopped for something to eat.
It's this, and the third chapter, in which we find out what happened in the diner that Ben will flee from, and the house where he will flee to, in the original movie. In Chapter Three we will also meet for the first time Sheriff McClellan who will leave a less than inspiring impression. The situation in the diner goes from bad to worse in Chapter Four, as Ben finally flees, and the sheriff shows up with his posse. Here we find out that Ben's later death wouldn't be the first time that the not-to-bright trigger happy sheriff shot first before he figured out what the hell he was doing.
Chapter Five tells the story of Karen Cooper and her family. Harry is abusive, his wife is passive and complacent, and Karen bares the brunt of it all. As we saw in the movie, all will suffer because of Harry's weak character and his stupidity. This is Karen's chapter, so the farmhouse's siege and her family's fate is told from her viewpoint, and stands up as an independent horror story, and the artwork here passes from Fiumara to Edison George.
In Chapter Six a whole new set of characters, independent from the movie are introduced. Here a local thug, and his crew, terrorize and rob a local drive-in. Their antics are interrupted when the dead come to feed. This is a solid zombie story that could have been written by Joe Lansdale. Unfortunately, the artwork by Ryan Waterhouse is less than inspired, and the characters are universally ugly.
In Chapter Seven we find out that Don and Christine have survived (how?) the siege and massacre at Beekman's Diner and they are on their way to WIIC, the home television station of the reporters that are seen in the movie, to rescue Christine's father, and it's here they pick up two new survivors. We also find out the fate of the scientist commentator who was seen on the television in the original movie. The art this time around is by Edison George and Luis Czerniawski, and seems to flux throughout the story, although, on the average it is top-notch. For the fans of the movie we also get cameos from zombies Karen, Barbra, and her brother Johnny in this story.
Chapter Eight takes place in New York City and Lisa and her date Eric are out on the town as the zombies invade. They are trapped in a diner with a trio of gun-toting maniacs as the city goes to hell. The story documents their fates as they escape the diner. The art is by Fabio Jansen, and is dramatic and well rendered, and its breathless telling would honor any zombie flick.
In the end all the stories are well told, with emphasis on the stories of the movie's characters as the world falls apart, and on independent stories chronicling the fall. There are also a lot of pages that are, or are near dialogueless, in which the authors allow the art to tell the story without cluttering up the pages with unnecessary verbiage. This isn't a kids comic though, there is VERY graphic nudity, gore, violence (a baby is feasted on), bad behavior, sexual situations; all the good stuff good violent exploitative fiction should have. This is coupled with mostly great art all around, with all of the characters well rendered, the action well staged, solid writing, sixties fashions well rendered, and the inclusion of all of the covers, variant and otherwise (see customer images for examples). The book is beautifully full-colored, and solidly bound; it should hold up to multiple readings, and is well worth the money that all horror fans will spend on it. There's even room for a sequel as Don and Christine survive the book.
For this site I have also reviewed the following graphic novels:

A strange mist brings the unburied dead back to life, hungry for the flesh of the living. This incredible prequel to the blockbuster classic 1968 Night of the Living Dead film gives new insight into many of the film's characters and locations, including horrific encounters at the farm house and Beekman's diner, and introduces, for the first time, the Cemetery Zombie, Sheriff McClellan, the zombie girl Karen, and NOTLD hero Ben.

Crossed, Vol. 1 ReviewThe blurb says it all. It's Ennis...at his most depraved. This book was so disturbing that at times I wanted to put it down, but my interest in the characters compelled me to keep reading through rape - of men and women(while they wer mutilated in one case), chidren mutilated and dismembered unto death, and every other sordid nearly (and sometimes certainly) pornographic act of violence in this collection.
In short, if extreme gore and violence depicted beautifully isn't your thing stay away.
If you love Garth Ennis, and can handle comic book violence in the extreme, you'll enjoy this read.
I give it four stars, because as I have stated at least twice already, it is Garth Ennis - and if you have read his work then you know that alone should make it a five, but, because some of it was so gonzo that I just felt Ennis was like a little kid eating worms, seeing if he could make you throw up in your mouth a little, I left one off.
If you haven't read the boys then you are missing a great series, although it has started to digress a little needlessly, and it needs to pick up. I highly recommend The Boys and Preacher.Crossed, Vol. 1 OverviewIn the blink of an eye, humanity is lost, and the Crossed are upon us. Men, women, and children alike fall victim to the mystery infection that makes killers out of parents and rapists out of lovers. Ruthless, berserk, and evil beyond measure, these cackling demons spread their plague across the Earth, brining humanity to near-extinction. Now, a small band of survivors make their cautious way across a deserted America, existing in a state of constant terror. The only thing they have in common is their determination to survive... but in this frightening new world, survival has a cost all its own. How far will they go to stay alive, and can they do so without become monsters themselves?
