ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) ReviewIn Neonomican No. 2 Alan Moore is at almost self-parody, and if it weren't for the obvious pretentiousness, one would think it was intentional.
The characters don't speak like real people, Their dialogue sounds more like urban intellectuals discussing Lovecraft at a college forum, not cops trying to solve a crime. The dialogue gets excruciating when they disguise themselves as potential cult members in order to infiltrate an H.P. Lovecraft inspired sex-club, that winds up being more.
Of course, no one should be surprised by the inclusion of a rape scene. Moore has rape in almost all his stories, it's like his signatures. Sure, he says he's trying to show the mistreatment of women, but this reads more like a porn, especially the dialogue during the scene. It's unpleasant, but it's more like "sheesh, another Moore rape scene" instead of "oh my god, it's so brutal."
The story itself is essentially a cop vs. murderous cult story. Aside from the cult worshiping Lovecraft's creations, it doesn't deviate too far from other such stories, at least, not so far. I'm sticking through the series, but there's not anything that makes me want to go back and read it.
Wouldn't recommend it.ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) Overview

Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures Review1/3 comic book, 2/3's fictional and non-fictional prose, Yuggoth Cultures comes shambling out of Alan (Watchmen) Moore's mind like one of those terrifying hybrids H.P. Lovecraft was always going on about.
Once upon a time, Moore was going to do a novel/short story cycle based on H.P. Lovecraft's Fungi from Yuggoth* poem cycle. Unfortunately, Moore left the bulk of his stories and notes in a taxi cab, never to be seen again. Years later, Avatar Press collected some of Moore's never-reprinted comics work, some of it Lovecraftian, and rounded it out with adaptations of Moore prose pieces and songs by Antony Johnston; Johnston's own comic-book miniseries Yuggoth Creatures; and several interviews with and articles by Moore. The result is an enjoyable, Lovecraftian hodgepodge.
The essays and interviews give an insight into Moore's creative process in the 1980's, while the more recent material at least sketches in his thoughts on the theory and practice of magic. Johnston's contributions are fairly solid -- he's a good adaptor of Moore's work, and his own miniseries suffers only from a need for greater length and depth. Lovecraftian pastiches generally don't benefit from an overabundance of plot (and Lovecraft himself noted that horrific effect, in his work, had nothing to do with the mechanics of plotting).
The Lovecraftian material is quite enjoyable -- one story, "Recognition", seems like a dry run for Moore's later neo-Lovecraftian horrors The Courtyard and Neonomicon, soon to be collected together by Avatar Press. As kooky as I find Moore's transformation into a practicing wizard, he's eloquent and fascinating on the topic of magic and mythology related to everyday human life (and scientific conceptions of the Fourth Dimension). Some fun Moore shorts from the early 1980's also pop up here, as does a mostly autobiographical epilogue to Moore's epic meditation on Jack the Ripper, From Hell.
I'd recommend this for Moore fans and fans of Lovecraftian Cthulhu material. There is some graphic sex and violence, so be warned.
* 'Yuggoth' was Lovecraft's name for the (former) planet Pluto; the Fungi in question were the Mi-Go, the moth-like sources of the Abominable Snowman myth.Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures OverviewYuggoth Cultures and Other Growths features tons of Alan's classic short sequential comic book stories that have been long out of print, stories that have never before been seen and special developmental sections with original script pages and comments from Alan and the creators. This massive volume also has an extensive interview with Moore as he discusses Yuggoth Cultures, the stories inside and some of the amazing tales the lead to their creation as well as the real magic behind the works. As if that wasn't enough, Antony Johnston's work inspired by Yuggoth Cultures and the worlds of H.P. Lovecraft is included and features all-star art by Juan Jose Ryp, Jacen Burrows, Dheeraj Verma and many more along with copious notes on the Lovecraftian origins of the tales.

Alan Moore's Hypothetical Lizard Limited Edition Hardcover ReviewI love, l-o-v-e all of Alan Moore's work, so I bought this item hoping to experience more work from the genius himself. While I was not entirely disappointed, the following must be pointed out. Alan wrote the novella Hypothetical Lizard, but someone else did the comic book sequential adaptation. While the work is up to Moore's standards, the adaptation lacks Moore's touch. Anyone familiar with Moore's work knows that he is a master at utilizing the visual conventions of the comic book language for maximum effect. While this adaptation is by no means a bad one, it is simply not Moore, and one can tell right away. Since I am a compleatist, I don't mind, but it should be noted, so there!Alan Moore's Hypothetical Lizard Limited Edition Hardcover OverviewFinally collected, here is one of Alan Moore's greatest works and his most critically acclaimed novella of all time, painstakingly adapted to comic books.Moore's frequent collaborator Antony Johnston has carefully preserved the story as it is presented in sequential form with stunning grey-painted art by sensations Lorenzo Lorente and Sebastian Fiumara. What would you pay to learn the innermost secrets of wizards?Young prostitute Som Som has made the ultimate sacrifice; literally sworn to secrecy bycosmetic surgery, the two halves of Som Som's brain have been severed, leaving her able to hear and see... but not speak or act.Now Som Som's unique attributes will put her firmly in the center of an impossible dilemma, as an old friend return to The House Without Clocks, and a deadly game of domination begins....This collected volume contains the entire four issue series, the full text of the original story, and both artist's original design sketches. Alan Moore's Another Suburban Romance ReviewAlan Moore's Another Suburban Romance is an attempt to make a buck off Moore's name. Avatar Press actually calls it a "graphic novel," but it isn't. This book is based on Moore's performance works. In other words, someone has taken Moore's words, drew illustrations (black and white) for them, and placed them in some kind of sequential order (no, Moore isn't the one who did it).
The truth is, ASR consists of three illustrated "poems," only one of which (the title piece) is any good.
Save your money; if you are interested, pick it up off the shelf at your local comic book store, and start reading it. (You can read the whole thing in less than 10 minutes.) After reading some of it, my guess is that you'll place it back on the shelf.
If you are interested in Moore, read Watchmen, Promethea, Swamp Thing, or just about anything else, and forget ASR.Alan Moore's Another Suburban Romance OverviewAn all-new graphic novel from the writer who defined modern comics, Alan Moore. For the first time ever, Alan Moore's performance works making up the play Another Suburban Romance are put in print and lavishly illustrated as full sequential stories. Comprised of three major pieces, adapted from Moore's original presentations by frequent collaborator Antony Johnston (The Courtyard), this original graphic novel is completely illustrated by the Spanish sensation Juan Jose Ryp. Running from the 1920's Chicago style killings in Old Gangsters Never Die, to the ruminations of modern life in the namesake piece Another Suburban Romance, this powerful work is one that no Alan Moore fan will want to miss!

Alan Moore Magic Words Volume 1 Hardcover ReviewI'm a HUGE fan of Alan Moore; He's written some of the greatest graphic novels of all time (From Hell, V For Vendetta, Miracleman, Batman: The Killing Joke), and his run on Swamp Thing changed the face of horror comics forever, giving birth to a style of writing that would spawn huge talents like Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman, among others...
So it's with a VERY heavy heart that I report that not only did I NOT enjoy Magic Words, I actually regretted buying it. The book was solicited (By publisher Avatar Comics) as a collection of short stories; It's actually a few of Moore's song lyrics interpreted by a group of European artists. The art was varied, ranging from decent to ultra-detailed, but the stories themselves (Actually the lyrics..) do NOT make for compelling reading. If reading song lyrics and looking at an artists interpretations of those lyrics is your thing, you'll probably like Magic Words. I found it to be very pretentious and self-important. I'll be very careful about checking into the content of Avatar books before buying from now on.....(Sorry Alan! You're STILL my favorite Writer, though!)Alan Moore Magic Words Volume 1 Hardcover OverviewFrom Alan Moore, the creator of FROM HELL, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, and more, comes this stunning adaptation of some of his songs, poems, and writings turned into sequential art by an amazing group of European artists never before seen in America. Get a glimpse inside the mind of the man many consider the finest comic book writer in the history of the form. This deluxe edition book features an introduction by Warren Ellis.

Alan Moore's Hypothetical Lizard ReviewProse and graphic combo.
An interesting idea, as this avatar production takes Moore's original novella, reprinting that in the latter half of the book, while the first is a black and white graphic novel adaptation of the same story, that is really quite similar.
A pretty cool idea, really, to combine the two, and the story seems quite similar in tone in either format.3.5 out of 5Brain split sorcerer sexual servant gender bending slave swap suicide.

Alan Moore's Writing For Comics Volume 1 ReviewThis is a collection of essays Alan Moore wrote in 1985 about writing comic books (with a follow-up essay from 2003 at the end). Actually, it's more about being a creative storyteller, not so much about comics. As you read the text, you realize that the nuts and bolts of panels, pages, and word balloons mean very little in comparison to honesty, inventiveness, intent, and understanding of your own talent. Alan Moore makes this clear as he writes, advising the aspiring writer to consider what he's doing long before he gets to the point of wondering how he can stack ten panels into a page.
Moore uses his own experience as a guide. Although he had not yet written (or completed) some of his greatest comics, by 1985 he had been working in British comics for years. He was also working on Swamp Thing and Miracle Man at the time. He uses Swamp Thing examples more than any other, which is good. That was the first great period of Moore's work, when he turned comic book writers into superstars along with illustrators. He describes one of his more daring stories of the 1980s --- a Swamp Thing issue in which menstruation is tied to a werewolf story --- from the ground up. First he had the social idea, then he came up with a framework for it, then he wrote the pages and panels.
Reading this short volume is a real inspiration for anyone who wants to tell stories. The advice here can liberate a writer from distractions and lead him (or her) toward the creative decisions that matter most. The final chapter adds a wonderful twist. Moore recommends that you avoid a personal style and focus instead of personal growth as an artist. Success should lead to experimenting, not a rut in which you tell the same lucrative story over and over. Alan Moore lives his life this way, so his advice has some well-earned authority behind it.Alan Moore's Writing For Comics Volume 1 OverviewThe master of comic book writing shares his thoughts on how to deliver a top-notch script! The main essay was originally written in 1985 and appeared in an obscure British fanzine, right as Moore was reshaping the landscape of modern comics, and has been tragically lost ever since. Now Avatar brings it back in print, collected for the first time as one graphic novel, and heavily illustrated by Jacen Burrows. Moore also provides a brand new essay on how his thoughts on writing have changed in the two decades since he first wrote it.

Alan Moore's The Courtyard (Color Edition) ReviewThis book blew my mind! Unlike most people who probably read it, I had no idea it was a Lovecraftian piece, just that it was Alan Moore's first horror comic in something like a decade. So as I read it I was confronted with a vaguely unsettling sense of familiarity, until I realized at the end exactly what this monstrosity was and started over from the beginning! Notes in Yuggoth Cultures #3 (another Lovecraftian collection by Moore) reveal that The Courtyard was originally intended as part of a novel (Yuggoth Cultures) wherein he treated Lovecraft's 36 sonnet "Fungi From Yuggoth" cycle as "literary fungi" (basically taking each sonnet and writing a story based on or inspired by it) So this is NOT like the many lovecraft pastiches out there which just invent more extraterrestrial deities, it's Alan Moore's warped take on Lovecraft's universe. There's even some mystical concepts worked into the tapestry, the like of which might be somewhat familiar to Promethea readers, except they're twisted to fit a very Lovecraftian end...I must have read this thing four or five times by now, and each time I read it I pick up on things I didn't notice or didn't understand before. I don't have the companion (yet!) but I'm sure it enhances the reading immensely...Alan Moore's The Courtyard (Color Edition) OverviewJust in time for the sequel in 2009, Alan Moore's haunting masterpiece, The Courtyard, is available in color for the first time! The most celebrated writer in the industry, Alan Moore, teams up with brilliant artist Jacen Burrows, to unleash this timeless tale of Lovecraftian psychological horror.FBI man Aldo Sax has an amazing service record with the FBI. Alan Moore's Light Of Thy Countenance Hardcover ReviewThe summaries I've read for Alan Moore's LIGHT OF THY COUNTENANCE, and even the back cover of the book, make it sound as if the entirety of the story focuses on a character named Maureen Cooper. Well, that's certainly not the case. Many authors have tackled the question of what gods make up our modern pantheons. From Harlan Ellison to Neil Gaiman, it's a subject that seems to fascinate writers just as much as readers. LIGHT OF THY COUNTENANCE is one of the better examples I've read of this particular subgenre, in which we are treated to a monologue from the great god Television, and "Maureen Cooper" is only one facet of it.
Originally a prose piece written for an anthology, LIGHT OF THY COUNTENANCE has here been adapted as a 48-page comic by writer Antony Johnston and artist Felipe Massafera. Seeing the price, you may wonder why you should pay so much for a comic. Well, for one thing, it's dense - this is not a book you'll finish in 5 minutes, and if you do, you're certainly not focusing on what Moore is saying. We follow Television's own account of its birth, evolution, power, and place in our lives, culminating in a beautiful yet unsettling 2001-esque moment that leaves just as many questions as the conclusion of that classic film.
While this story was not originally intended for a comic format, Johnston does a solid job of adapting it to the medium. The same can be said of Massafera's beautiful painted art, which resembles the early work of Alex Ross. Those readers who follow Moore primarily for his superhero work may be in for a disappointment, but if you have marveled at From Hell, Voice of the Fire, or Alan Moore's Songbook, LIGHT OF THY COUNTENANCE is a worthwhile purchase.
Alan Moore's Light Of Thy Countenance Hardcover OverviewAlan Moore, master and magician of storytelling, tears back the veil of one of the most arcane of enchantments - The Magic of Television! Part grimoire, part grim invocation of things that are all too ordinary, Light of Thy Countenance - an original and breathtaking story by Alan Moore - is adapted to graphic novella format by Antony Johnston, preserving every word, with each page painstakingly painted by Felipe Massafera. Maureen Cooper is not real. She is an apparition summoned to screens, into homes, into the hearts and mind of the viewing audience by Carol Livesly. But Carol Livesly is not the god that creates the illusions that capture the mind and bind the soul. She is only a servant of a higher power. A higher, hungry power, as old as the world and eternally new. As, perhaps, are we all.
