Wonder Woman's Book of Myths (DK READERS) ReviewWhile the idea behind this DK Reader series is great - combining superheroes with non-fiction material, they clearly forgot their audience (9-12 year olds) when illustrating Wonder Woman's Book of Myths. I bought a class set of these, and will be returning them. I'd be fired if I sent these home with the kids! The cover illustration of Wonder Woman in a barely-there costume is just the tip of the iceburg - all of the images of women in this book are sexed-up and scantily clad.Wonder Woman's Book of Myths (DK READERS) OverviewDC Comics' super heroine introduces young readers to the world of classical Greek mythology in this exciting DK Reader. Wonder Woman tells the stories of her favorite gods and goddesses, and their impact on her own adventures.

Crossed #0 A Cover A ReviewCrossed has to be one of the hardest edged comics to come out in a long time. It pushes the envelope, too, as you can see from some of the reactionary types that are out there. Amazingly, people still keep reading it, perhaps saying something about their inner demons and less about the page.
Crossed is a viral form of horrific, transmitting itself along the states and managing to kill everyone. In the first piece (you need this one, too, even though it is a #0) you have a person walk into a bar with a piece of a human and place it on the bar before going crazy. Then there is the burning alive in the car, the blindness that comes from the explosion of a jet, and that is only the start.
I say it is only the start because Crossed takes all the horror in a person and makes it that much worse.
Imagine, if you will, a person that would use their own "contaminants" to put on bullets just to make sure you got infected by a bullet. Or maybe people who like to send other skydiving without parachutes. Or killers, sadists, and people with donkey parts - the vilest ones - using that to keep control of thei rpack. Yeah, they are the baddies. Then imagine the good guys - the kind that need to kill the young because they can't keep up, the kind that find out that some of their number might have once been serial killers; there are so many twisted things that they could really be a picture of the rela world.
That's the scary part, too. The people here could be real - they could be us only we wouldn't dare admit it.
It is things like that that make Crossed so great because, in the end, there are no rela heroes. There are some people that help out and they are sometimes better for it but, for the most part, they suffer for their kindness. Only the ruthless seem to thrive in a world that has gone mad and, in movie and books, people like to omit that. Unicorns are real, Santa brings presents, and a viral contagion is going to make us better people. Yeah.
you should check it all out - there are 10 parts counting this #0 and, thusfar, it has shocked me and surprised me and made me think that Kansas is not a good place for any kind of Toto.
Recommended.Crossed #0 A Cover A Overview

Gravel: Never A Dull Day (Signed Hardcover) ReviewI'm surprised no one has reviewed this yet. I'm a fan of a lot of Ellis' more recent work, so after picking up the trade paperback of "Strange Killings: Body Orchard" (which is included in this volume) I decided to pick up this collection. I wasn't disappointed. It's a great little package collecting all of the previous mini series starring LT. Gravel, the combat magician. A very inventive take on magic in modern times. I'm not a big fan of Mike Wolfer's artwork, but he gets the job done in quite cinematic ways.
The only thing that kept this from a full five stars is there was not any introduction, behind the scenes, or bonus material as far as concept sketches, etc from the creators. For a collection of this sort that's a real shame. In fact it's pretty inexcusable. Too bad. If you haven't picked these up yet this is a great way to get them all in one package.
Gravel: Never A Dull Day (Signed Hardcover) OverviewIt's never a dull day, being a magician. Now you can read the collected history of William Gravel in all it's strange glory in this gigantic signed hardcover! Alan Moore's A Small Killing TP ReviewNot sure I get the bad reviews. Maybe they didn't read the whole thing? Hmm, wait a minute! I'm on to something. Honestly, when I read this for the first time, at about halfway through, I was not sure I wanted to go on. It was depressing, the lead was unlikeable. Then the last page. Wow. Killed me. I remember reading the last page, in the bathroom (lol), and I was just in tears. Something about that orange soda. Heavy stuff. It hits in the way that the Accidental Tourist hits, the final scene where Hurt finally does what he hasn't done in two hours: Smile. And then you just get it. That's what this work was for me. A hand reaches for a soda pop and you just get it. If you don't, I feel for you.Alan Moore's A Small Killing TP OverviewOne of the classic Alan Moore works is finally back in print with totally re-mastered artwork and lettering. Adman Timothy Hole has everything going for him and has now been handed the biggest assignment of his life, marketing a major cola in Russia. But his smooth life begins to unravel as he is stalked by a demonic child that makes him question not just who he is, but how he really affects those around him. It is about the little murders that we all have to make each day just to get by. The little assassinations of tiny things. Really, how much damage can be done by a small killing? As an added bonus, this graphic novel includes new commentary articles by both Alan Moore and the artist, Oscar Zarate.

ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) ReviewIn Neonomican No. 2 Alan Moore is at almost self-parody, and if it weren't for the obvious pretentiousness, one would think it was intentional.
The characters don't speak like real people, Their dialogue sounds more like urban intellectuals discussing Lovecraft at a college forum, not cops trying to solve a crime. The dialogue gets excruciating when they disguise themselves as potential cult members in order to infiltrate an H.P. Lovecraft inspired sex-club, that winds up being more.
Of course, no one should be surprised by the inclusion of a rape scene. Moore has rape in almost all his stories, it's like his signatures. Sure, he says he's trying to show the mistreatment of women, but this reads more like a porn, especially the dialogue during the scene. It's unpleasant, but it's more like "sheesh, another Moore rape scene" instead of "oh my god, it's so brutal."
The story itself is essentially a cop vs. murderous cult story. Aside from the cult worshiping Lovecraft's creations, it doesn't deviate too far from other such stories, at least, not so far. I'm sticking through the series, but there's not anything that makes me want to go back and read it.
Wouldn't recommend it.ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #2 (OF 4) Overview

Doktor Sleepless Volume 1: Engines of Desire HC ReviewSo the Doktor is a weird scientist that has stuff going on in the background, somehow he is a form of someone that used to live in the city, and also somehow he is not all of the mad genius controller the fate of the town as he may think he is, but overall, it is a good story so far.
The other characters are not well developed as of yet, but the Doktor and his side kick "Nurse" partake in some witty banter.
The art is good, but anything really special though, but the town itself is beautifully created and described. The townsfolk are shown to be sort of bitter and nihilistic at the fact that the future was not what they were promised. One tag on a building is says "Where's My Jetpack?!" I found that humorous.
The writing is good, typical Warren Ellis and his use of main charismatic, not-so-good main characters. Some of the speeches that the Doktor gives shows a wonderful spark of genius. Oh, did we mention that he hosts his own radio show that the lower-class seem to take as gospel? It is a good show...I think I would listen to it.
Overall, this is a good book if you want to know the story so far. One of the problems with the comics is that he produces to many covers for each issue, making us collectors pay more to own them...it is annoying...
Get the book if you like comics, anti-heroes, dark futuristic stories, mad scientists, or Warren Ellis.Doktor Sleepless Volume 1: Engines of Desire HC OverviewWhere is the future we were promised? Doktor Sleepless, a renegade mad scientist recently back from the supposed dead, will not rest until he tears the city of Heavenside apart in search of that answer. Aided by a sultry and murderous assistant known only as Nurse, he's outraged that the widescale application of his science has not advanced society, but been abused and twisted. From his tower above, he broadcasts intrigue and revolution to a populace of beautiful Shrieky Girls, angry Grinders, and the conspiratorial authorities. Only Sing Watson, his old flame, truly suspects how dangerous things are about to get! The good Doktor has just the prescription for all of society's ills... whether you want it or not! Warren Ellis presents DOKTOR SLEEPLESS, the thematic successor to his critically acclaimed TRANSMETROPOLITAN.

Anna Mercury Volume 1: The Cutter ReviewThis collects the five issue 2008 Avatar Press creator-owned mini-series from writer Warren Ellis and artist Facundo Percio. Anna Mercury is a British secret agent tasked with preventing New Ataraxia from using a weapon of mass destruction (the titular "Cutter") against Sheol, a neighboring civilization. These combatants are on a parallel Earth that had been disturbed by our planet, and now Mercury "boomerangs" to and from this world for brief periods to mitigate the explosive effects. From his striking depictions of the main character to his detailed machines and cityscapes, Percio's art is exemplary and the highlight of this book. Ellis' fun, action-filled plot can also be viewed as a modern geopolitical allegory. He has created a strong character in an intriguing new world that merits further stories. The Volume 2 mini-series is in comic stores now.Anna Mercury Volume 1: The Cutter OverviewPRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Warren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this collection of first action-packed series! Dancing amid the spires of a city called New Ataraxia, there is a woman who can cloud men's minds, leap across buildings as if weightless, unerringly fire twin automatic pistols in the most insane conditions, and disappear in a crowded room. She fights against the political repression of an insane technocratic society, and she comes from a place that no-one in New Ataraxia has ever heard of. And she's got one hour to save the city from itself. A high-octane blend of The Shadow, Tomb Raider, retro-punk science fiction and 21st century Weird Pulp Action, ANNA MERCURY is a headlong adventure serial about a beautiful and mysterious spy-adventurer who is not what she seems.... Anna Mercury Volume 1 features all five of the original issues with art by all-new talent Facundo Percio as well as a special super-sized cover gallery!

Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures Review1/3 comic book, 2/3's fictional and non-fictional prose, Yuggoth Cultures comes shambling out of Alan (Watchmen) Moore's mind like one of those terrifying hybrids H.P. Lovecraft was always going on about.
Once upon a time, Moore was going to do a novel/short story cycle based on H.P. Lovecraft's Fungi from Yuggoth* poem cycle. Unfortunately, Moore left the bulk of his stories and notes in a taxi cab, never to be seen again. Years later, Avatar Press collected some of Moore's never-reprinted comics work, some of it Lovecraftian, and rounded it out with adaptations of Moore prose pieces and songs by Antony Johnston; Johnston's own comic-book miniseries Yuggoth Creatures; and several interviews with and articles by Moore. The result is an enjoyable, Lovecraftian hodgepodge.
The essays and interviews give an insight into Moore's creative process in the 1980's, while the more recent material at least sketches in his thoughts on the theory and practice of magic. Johnston's contributions are fairly solid -- he's a good adaptor of Moore's work, and his own miniseries suffers only from a need for greater length and depth. Lovecraftian pastiches generally don't benefit from an overabundance of plot (and Lovecraft himself noted that horrific effect, in his work, had nothing to do with the mechanics of plotting).
The Lovecraftian material is quite enjoyable -- one story, "Recognition", seems like a dry run for Moore's later neo-Lovecraftian horrors The Courtyard and Neonomicon, soon to be collected together by Avatar Press. As kooky as I find Moore's transformation into a practicing wizard, he's eloquent and fascinating on the topic of magic and mythology related to everyday human life (and scientific conceptions of the Fourth Dimension). Some fun Moore shorts from the early 1980's also pop up here, as does a mostly autobiographical epilogue to Moore's epic meditation on Jack the Ripper, From Hell.
I'd recommend this for Moore fans and fans of Lovecraftian Cthulhu material. There is some graphic sex and violence, so be warned.
* 'Yuggoth' was Lovecraft's name for the (former) planet Pluto; the Fungi in question were the Mi-Go, the moth-like sources of the Abominable Snowman myth.Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures OverviewYuggoth Cultures and Other Growths features tons of Alan's classic short sequential comic book stories that have been long out of print, stories that have never before been seen and special developmental sections with original script pages and comments from Alan and the creators. This massive volume also has an extensive interview with Moore as he discusses Yuggoth Cultures, the stories inside and some of the amazing tales the lead to their creation as well as the real magic behind the works. As if that wasn't enough, Antony Johnston's work inspired by Yuggoth Cultures and the worlds of H.P. Lovecraft is included and features all-star art by Juan Jose Ryp, Jacen Burrows, Dheeraj Verma and many more along with copious notes on the Lovecraftian origins of the tales.

Warren Ellis' Dark Blue ReviewA cop on the trail of a dangerous serial killer nearly beats to death a suspect - and that's the least of his departments' worries. The guards rape prisoners and the captain has a heroin addiction. But the cop begins to realise all is not as it seems. Is he losing his mind or is all of this a nightmare? And what's with the frequent repetition of the code "LD50"?
Warren Ellis tells a strong horror mystery story with overtones of noir with a frequent collaborator, the excellent artist Jacen Burrows. The book is quite brief but the story is fascinating and keeps the reader guessing throughout. It's based upon shared drug experiences with the same shamanic drug. Is there a communal place where people who use this drug gather? And what would happen if your body died while your mind was in this place?
It's a great read and a brilliant addition to Ellis' inspiring Apparat imprint. At times horrific, others very trippy, it's a fun comic book from the always interesting Warren Ellis.Warren Ellis' Dark Blue OverviewViolent and disturbed cop Frank Christchurch has too many problems. His partner is convinced that he's mentally ill, his commanding officer is addicted to smack, and he's in pursuit of a killer whom no one else seems interested in catching. The pressure of his savage life is triggering murderous outbursts and hallucinations. Frank Christchurch is on the way down... and he might take everyone with him. Alan Moore's Hypothetical Lizard Limited Edition Hardcover ReviewI love, l-o-v-e all of Alan Moore's work, so I bought this item hoping to experience more work from the genius himself. While I was not entirely disappointed, the following must be pointed out. Alan wrote the novella Hypothetical Lizard, but someone else did the comic book sequential adaptation. While the work is up to Moore's standards, the adaptation lacks Moore's touch. Anyone familiar with Moore's work knows that he is a master at utilizing the visual conventions of the comic book language for maximum effect. While this adaptation is by no means a bad one, it is simply not Moore, and one can tell right away. Since I am a compleatist, I don't mind, but it should be noted, so there!Alan Moore's Hypothetical Lizard Limited Edition Hardcover OverviewFinally collected, here is one of Alan Moore's greatest works and his most critically acclaimed novella of all time, painstakingly adapted to comic books.Moore's frequent collaborator Antony Johnston has carefully preserved the story as it is presented in sequential form with stunning grey-painted art by sensations Lorenzo Lorente and Sebastian Fiumara. What would you pay to learn the innermost secrets of wizards?Young prostitute Som Som has made the ultimate sacrifice; literally sworn to secrecy bycosmetic surgery, the two halves of Som Som's brain have been severed, leaving her able to hear and see... but not speak or act.Now Som Som's unique attributes will put her firmly in the center of an impossible dilemma, as an old friend return to The House Without Clocks, and a deadly game of domination begins....This collected volume contains the entire four issue series, the full text of the original story, and both artist's original design sketches. Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC ReviewThis collection boasts a large cover gallery in the back containing three sections. There are the five Juan Jose Ryp wrap covers plus additional covers he drew for auxilary issues and special convention issues, and the beautiful Felipe Massafera painted covers that looks good enough to frame ( again all five are included). Lastly there are the special Facundo Percio convention covers in the back that showcase his talent with facial expression.
There are five issues in this collection and the chapter breaks are drawn by Paul Duffield and are double sided with the original basic covers and the Duffield auxilary covers on the back. Each chapter contains Ellis' classic witty banter and jokes, and Facundo Percio's art brings the characters fully to life with expressive faces. Percio's art finds a balance between static dialogue and action scenes. His layouts are not static and use skewed panels to add depth to the layouts. His static panels have the appearance of movement in them, while the action scenes appear to have all the motion illusion that Juan Jose Ryp's or Kohta Hirano's art has. This is highly recommended for Warren Ellis fans and fans of retrofuture sci-fi.Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC OverviewWarren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this collection of first action-packed series! Garth Ennis' 303 ReviewThe story "303" is told from the POV of a Russian Soldier who is leading a team to investigate a private U.S. plane that has crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. The mystery regarding the crash arises when Americans dcline offers of assistance from nighboring countries such as Britain. So, basically this piques the interest of the British and the Russians as they set out to investigate the wrecage with the Americans on the way to safeguard their secret. What ensues is a bloody battle within the three factions and the death of innocent villagers as the Americans carpet-bomb a nearby village to preserve their secret. But at the end, the old Russain soldier survives and what he discovers entails a deal between the American government and a private corporation regarding rebuilding placns for Afghnistan, Iraq and eventually Iran and N. Korea. The soldier then sets out for the United States specifically Texas with a goal of his own. That's as far as I am going to go with the plot without spoiling anything.
In this book Ennis uses the protagonist, the Russian soldier as a vehicle for exploring and commenting on the dark side of war. He comments on the present and past squirmishes between Afghanistan and the West. He also delievers a shocking and controversial ending which I honestly did not see coming. The book is well written and represents another solid tale questioning war morality a la Ennis' Unknown Soldier.
Let's talk about the art. It complements the story very well and does its job to convey the story. It gets a bit gory at times but this is after all a war story so, shouldn't come as a surprise. The art itself is clean and crisp. Jacen Burrows is a great artist and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
If you want to read a story that will leave you thinking, my recommendation is to pick this book up.Garth Ennis' 303 OverviewDeep in the mountains of Afghanistan, a dozen Russian special forces soldiers race their British opponents for a secret neither of them can imagine. The Russian leader, a war-weary colonel who knows no other life but conflict, carries old ghosts that refuse to let him be. But the battle that awaits him deep in this ancient land will change his life forever, and send him on a violent journey no sane man would contemplate. The ultimate soldier meets his destiny, in a tale from Garth Ennis, the creator of PREACHER.

Freakangels, Vol. 2 Reviewvolume 2 of this series was decidedly not as good as the first. i actually had to check it was the same artist as volume 1, 'cuz it was just less visually compelling (though still beautiful, and with a lovely color palette). it's prolly more like a 3.5 star, but i'll round up for keeping me interested enough to get the next one.
builds on previous story and you get to know the characters better, but there is no subtlety to the way things unfold... just BLAM, here's each character's deal. i hear they get better again- i hope so!
Freakangels, Vol. 2 OverviewVolume Two of award-winning author Warren Ellis' ongoing web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here! This installment collects the entire second arc of the post-apocalyptic saga into 144 gorgeous, full-color pages. Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. Today, eleven strange 23-year-olds are living in and defending Whitechapel, maybe the last real settlement in flooded London. They've made a new friend, and together they successfully defended their home from raiders--but the post-apocalyptic drowned London that the eleven Freakangels survive in is never a safe place, and never surrounded by friends. Night has only just fallen, but strangers already creep through Whitechapel with the worst of intentions and theweapons to see them through. In FREAKANGELS: VOLUME TWO, we discover just how bad the situation in sunken England has gotten, and we meet the last of the eleven strange Freakangels. But the twelfth, sinister Mark, is still out there somewhere... Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

Supergod ReviewA professor talking to a recording device sits beside the Thames River as all of London lies in burning ruin, the river choked with corpses, the sky a fiery red. This man is telling us how things got to this point, how the world ended for humans because we put our faith in gods, or superheroes - Supergods.
Warren Ellis has been writing some really interesting books in the last few years about the nature of superheroes and riffing on new ways to portray them in comics. I highly recommend checking out "Black Summer" and "No Hero" before coming to "Supergod" as you see a master writer working his way through some pretty fantastic ideas before coming to this, a culmination of sorts, and the best superhero book you'll read this year.
In this world humans build superhumans who are real representations of their own gods such as a real life, superhuman Krishna, complete with blue skin, who was created to save India. He does this by murdering 90% of the Indian population and burning down most of the structures, recreating a cleaner India thus "saving" it.
China creates a god who goes on to turn people into structures; Russian creates a god who becomes a killing machine; the UK creates a strange god with three heads that spreads love and chaos through spores; and America creates the worst one of all...
I won't go into each country's version of their saviour but suffice it to say, Ellis' imagination shows you some pretty amazing creations - and then faces them against each other. The battlescenes and the actions of these gods are incredible, in fact just imagining this story is a feat few writers could achieve but Ellis not only does it but does a great job of realising it as well. Garrie Gastonny's artwork is also brilliant and he brings each of these strange gods/monsters to life beautifully/horrifically.
"Supergod" is an utterly brilliant superhero comic that mixes in the space philosophy ideas Ellis writes about in "Planetary" with the awesome visions of superbeings in "The Authority" and the mix is a very heady book that's gripping, horrific, thoughtful, and unforgettable. Reading this was enormous fun and confirms Warren Ellis as one of the most interesting writers in comics today.Supergod OverviewPraying to be saved by a man who can fly will get you killed! From the mind of Warren Ellis, the creator of TRANSMETROPOLITAN and PLANETARY, comes the most horrifying superhero graphic novel you will ever read! What if the arms race of global superpowers did not yield nuclear stockpiles, but rather messianic beings capable of wondrous miracles and – when needed – the ability to unleash the wrath of gods? But the scientists, generals, and politicians built super-humans to save the planet, no one ever imagined how their heroes would do it – or even if they'd want to. Behold the apocalyptic tomorrow, when supermen kill us all and end the world just because we wanted to be rescued by human-shaped things from beyond Science itself!

Scars ReviewIts a tough call, I love warren Ellis and Burrow's creations, but this story doesn't suit Burrows style of artwork sadly. The story is pretty unoriginal, but a solid cop story altogether. However it could of been better in many respects.Scars OverviewHow much of a monster do you have to become to hunt monsters? Detective John Cain is a hard man. He's been working homicides long enough that he can withstand almost anything, even wrenching personal loss. But everyone has a limit, as he discovers when assigned to the investigation of a child killing. It's not enough to be a good cop, to follow the procedure and ensure that scum go to prison. To honor the chilling promise he gave to the dead child's parents -- to find the killer using any means necessary -- Cain will have to cross lines and do whatever it takes to bring bloody justice to the killer.
