Prince of Lies (Forgotten Realms: The Avatar Series, Book 4) ReviewJames Lowder, the editor for Richard Awlinsons "The Avatar Trilogy", returns to the realms with his best outing (or so I think). The twisted story of Cyric, the man who would be a god continues. The Sewer rat made bad, continues to vie for power amidst the Fearunian Pantheon; but his schemes don't go unchecked. Mystra, Lady of Magic, and his old mortal friend fights him at every turn. Mr. Lowder does a marvelous job with the characters, especially Rhinda, the lowly scribe, and both of the major deities (Cyric and Mystra). I recommend this book whole heartedly. However, the characters in this book are dependant, to a degree I fear, on the foreknowledge gained in reading the Avater Series. I recommend you start there. Waterdeep: The Avatar Series, Book III ReviewThis is the final installment in the Avatar Trilogy (the previous two being "Shadowdale" and "Tantras.") There's nothing I hate more in a novel (and especially a series of novels) than unresolved questions at the end. This book resolves the issues of the series in a believable and interesting way, which also opens the door to future adventures involving the same characters.
If you've read "Shadowdale" and "Tantras," then you owe it to yourself to finish out the trilogy. If you haven't, then read them first, because the actions of the characters will be much clearer with the background provided by the first two books.
All in all, a fine ending to an outstanding series and some truly unforgetable characters (my personal "favorite" is Cyric, since he's hands-down the most interesting and layered character in the series.) Prepare to be hooked (I last read these books over 5 years ago, and I still find the characters and stories compelling.) if you get started.Waterdeep: The Avatar Series, Book III OverviewAn all-new version of the New York Times best-selling title. All Shadows Fled (Forgotten Realms: The Shadow of the Avatar, Book 3) Review... not just of Greenwood's works, but just of Fantasy in general. The novel picks up directly where the last one left off, and flows without a hitch. The Rnagers Three return as the main heros of the novel, with Elminster and the Knights of Myth Drannor (all FR regulars) spiraling in to give life to Greenwoods infamous humor. (Check out the chapter "There's always revenge". that cracks me up every time i read it.) while the battle scenes (specificly the one for Mistledale) are rather unrealistic (70 v 7000, 70 win with maybe 20 casualties...) they are fun and very well crafted. The way that Greenwood lights from perspective to perspective draws the reader in, and the Maulaugrym provide entertaining and origional villians. THe trilogy was created to be a more perosnal look at the Time of Troubles (as opposed to the Avatar Trilogys wider world-based view) and the two complement eachother nicely, although Greenwood is the better of the three writters. I recomend this to everyone and anyone who enjoys FR and Fantasy novels.All Shadows Fled (Forgotten Realms: The Shadow of the Avatar, Book 3) OverviewThe Shadow SpreadsThe Time of Troubles had almost passed. Cloak of Shadows (Forgotten Realms: The Shadow of the Avatar, Book 2) Review"The Great Foe", a name that sent shudders down the amorphous spines of the shadowmasters, an odd clan of shapeshifting sorcerers living in the demi-plane of Shadows. Such was the name given to Elminster of Shadowdale. Greenwood returns in the sequel to "Shadows of Doom", and the fifth in the line of novels dealing with the Godswar, also called the Avatar Crisis. Ed's humor is once again a huge part in this novel, as is the setting of the stage for the Maulagrym to steal into the magic depleated realms and wreak havok en route to total domination. Ithar, Belkram Sharantyr, along with the ghost of Sylune must battle the horrid creatures, or all Fearun will be lost. Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad: The Avatar Series, Book V ReviewIf you're looking for the brave, valiant knight that leads the forces of good to victory over unholy evil then look elsewhere. The story is told from the perspective of Malik, a follower of Cyric, the evil God of Strife, Lies and Murder. Malik is an unlikely anti-hero who possesses traits more of a merchant and part-time rogue than a warrior who brandishes steel to combat his enemies directly. Malik is comical and sometimes clumsy. However its' his unwavering devotion to his god that gets him through a grueling fanatical life, which all makes him a very distinctive, unconventional, and enjoyable character.
The book fleshes out how Kelemvor and Mystra/Midnight came to terms with their new role as gods, and their transition from mortality to the responsibility of immortality and the worshipers and portfolio that came with it. On the other side of the coin, it also deals with Cyric's self-delusions caused by the Cyrinshad debacle, which drove him insane.
You'll also read of interactions between the newly crowned gods and the established personalities within the Faerunian Pantheon. Much intrigue occurs, particularly between Mask and Cyric, which I found highly amusing.
If you feel very strongly for the forces of good from the books in the Avatar Trilogy and Prince of Lies, then Crucible will probably leave a bitter taste in your mouth. If you abhor Cyric or similar evil Gods, then you'll be disappointed. If you've got an open mind about how mortals deal with their new existence and responsibilities that come with attaining godhood, as Troy Denning spells out here, then I think it's an excellent read.
Troy Denning, one of my favorite authors, has written an unconventional book that isn't your standard fair FR novel. Shadows of Doom (Forgotten Realms: The Shadow of the Avatar, Book 1) ReviewThe trilogy of which this is the first book, like all the novels by Ed Greenwood features invincible, god-like heroes that slay their foes by the thousands. They invade a castle full of shapeshifters and defeat them all. No surprise there though, the good guys have to win the day of course. But the way they do it, it is just unbelievable, even for a fantasy novel. What I do not like at all about the books of Mr. Greenwood is, that his heroes are drenching the world in the blood of their enemies all the time. They are always evil, but when one reads his books, the answer to all your problems seems to be : Kill them all and do not think about it. They are evil and therefore deserve to die. I am not a moral apostle and enjoy reading action and battle-scenes, but killing people and monsters off by the thousands without any other moral justification than: They are against me, and I believe my way is the right way, is not only dangerous, but also no fun at all. I really have to consider buying another book by that author, even if I love the Realms he created and collect the novels. Shadowdale (Forgotten Realms: Avatar Trilogy, Book 1) ReviewDefinitely a great fantasy epic and one of my personal favorites, The Avatar Trilogy- Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep, is about the Time of Troubles when the Gods walked the Earth (in this case Toril). The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. The authors have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien?s work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies, and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies. Love, honor, bravery, magic, and heroes are all about. In conclusion, it's what Fantasy reading SHOULD be. A GREAT trilogy indeed and a must read along with James Lowder's Prince of Lies and Troy Denning's Crucible: The Trial of Cyric!
