Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC ReviewThis collection boasts a large cover gallery in the back containing three sections. There are the five Juan Jose Ryp wrap covers plus additional covers he drew for auxilary issues and special convention issues, and the beautiful Felipe Massafera painted covers that looks good enough to frame ( again all five are included). Lastly there are the special Facundo Percio convention covers in the back that showcase his talent with facial expression.
There are five issues in this collection and the chapter breaks are drawn by Paul Duffield and are double sided with the original basic covers and the Duffield auxilary covers on the back. Each chapter contains Ellis' classic witty banter and jokes, and Facundo Percio's art brings the characters fully to life with expressive faces. Percio's art finds a balance between static dialogue and action scenes. His layouts are not static and use skewed panels to add depth to the layouts. His static panels have the appearance of movement in them, while the action scenes appear to have all the motion illusion that Juan Jose Ryp's or Kohta Hirano's art has. This is highly recommended for Warren Ellis fans and fans of retrofuture sci-fi.Anna Mercury V1: The Cutter HC OverviewWarren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this collection of first action-packed series! Dancing amid the spires of a city called New Ataraxia, there is a woman who can cloud men's minds, leap across buildings as if weightless, unerringly fire twin automatic pistols in the most insane conditions, and disappear in a crowded room. She fights against the political repression of an insane technocratic society, and she comes from a place that no-one in New Ataraxia has ever heard of. And she's got one hour to save the city from itself. A high-octane blend of The Shadow, Tomb Raider, retro-punk science fiction and 21st century Weird Pulp Action, ANNA MERCURY is a headlong adventure serial about a beautiful and mysterious spy-adventurer who is not what she seems.... Anna Mercury Volume 1 features all five of the original issues with art by all-new talent Facundo Percio as well as a special super-sized cover gallery! Limited edition hardcover - limited to 2000 copies.

Garth Ennis' 303 ReviewThe story "303" is told from the POV of a Russian Soldier who is leading a team to investigate a private U.S. plane that has crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. The mystery regarding the crash arises when Americans dcline offers of assistance from nighboring countries such as Britain. So, basically this piques the interest of the British and the Russians as they set out to investigate the wrecage with the Americans on the way to safeguard their secret. What ensues is a bloody battle within the three factions and the death of innocent villagers as the Americans carpet-bomb a nearby village to preserve their secret. But at the end, the old Russain soldier survives and what he discovers entails a deal between the American government and a private corporation regarding rebuilding placns for Afghnistan, Iraq and eventually Iran and N. Korea. The soldier then sets out for the United States specifically Texas with a goal of his own. That's as far as I am going to go with the plot without spoiling anything.
In this book Ennis uses the protagonist, the Russian soldier as a vehicle for exploring and commenting on the dark side of war. He comments on the present and past squirmishes between Afghanistan and the West. He also delievers a shocking and controversial ending which I honestly did not see coming. The book is well written and represents another solid tale questioning war morality a la Ennis' Unknown Soldier.
Let's talk about the art. It complements the story very well and does its job to convey the story. It gets a bit gory at times but this is after all a war story so, shouldn't come as a surprise. The art itself is clean and crisp. Jacen Burrows is a great artist and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
If you want to read a story that will leave you thinking, my recommendation is to pick this book up.Garth Ennis' 303 OverviewDeep in the mountains of Afghanistan, a dozen Russian special forces soldiers race their British opponents for a secret neither of them can imagine. The Russian leader, a war-weary colonel who knows no other life but conflict, carries old ghosts that refuse to let him be. But the battle that awaits him deep in this ancient land will change his life forever, and send him on a violent journey no sane man would contemplate. The ultimate soldier meets his destiny, in a tale from Garth Ennis, the creator of PREACHER.

Frank Miller's Robocop ReviewAfter hearing so much from the Internet that Frank Miller had written an epic screenplay that was bowdlerized by the studio execs into what became the abysmal Robocop 2, I was eager to read the original treatment presented in this graphic novel. However, the very things people complained about in Robocop 2 are present here. Robocop has no character development. Most of his time in this book is spent shooting stuff. Also, there is the odd scene in this book with the ex-wife talking to him in tears at OCP almost exactly as it is in the movie, with no follow up or mention of how Robo feels about it afterwards. It just gets dropped, like in the movie. Lewis has no character development, like Robo, most of her time in this novel is spent shooting stuff. Throw in a Miller version of Robocop 2, a psycopathic goliath equally as ridiculous as the movie version (that apparently didn't go through any testing phases just like the movie version, damn those future dystopian engineers), add in a lead engineer who dresses up like she's ready to pick up some guys at a nightclub and is extremely well endowed with hip and chest size (which engineering labs were THESE girls hanging out in at my university?????), and finally add in bloody gun battles (LOTS of them) and you've summed up the basic plot of this book.I do give credit though for the artwork. A lot of it is amazing. Unfortunately, this book suffers from "too much of a good thing" and as a result because of the gorgeous amount of detail put into each panel, a lot of the action is hard to follow. In summary, if filmed from Miller's original script, Robocop 2 would not have turned out any better. Miller is no Alan Moore.Frank Miller's Robocop Overview"Robocop" was one of the truly great bits of movie and pop culture magic from the 1980s, and Frank Miller wanted to deliver a masterpiece with his original movie script, but Hollywood massively edited his work. In full-on action, the "Robocop" story is told as Frank Miller always intended, composed straight from the master's original writings and scripts! The vast majority of Miller's insane ideas, vicious black humor and robotic mayhem never made it to the screen, but every last bit is finally unleashed in this series! With sequential adaptation from Steven Grant and art by superstar Juan Jose Ryp, this sci-fi epic is not to be missed!

Streets Of Glory Hardcover ReviewGarth Ennis' penchant for good character writing shows plainly in this graphic novel. While not a new story, every possible Western having been put to page long ago, Garth Ennis' wonderful take on classic Westerns is well worth a read.
The story follows the recounting of a man's reminiscence of the time he spent with Joe Dunn, a former COL in the U.S. Army. It includes the gut-wrenching visuals interpreted excellently by Mike Wolfer, a fantastic illustrator who doesn't get enough work in my opinion and as I said before, Garth Ennis' great character development and design.
Every character in this story which has a name also has a personality which is distinct and important. One grows to care about them as one reads on and knowing Ennis' tendency to allow reality to impact a story in a very "no one is safe" way makes you think it's entirely possible that when one of them is imperiled as soon as you turn the page you could witness their death. Without offering any spoilers, I'll simply say the character writing is top-notch.
While the character writing is very good, the story itself is very truncated. It is enjoyable, but I believe it should have been at least 1/3rd longer than it was. If it were a movie I'd say I thought it was the victim of overly aggressive editing. I wish the relationships in the stories had more time to flesh themselves out, from the first page to the last. I wish we knew more about the narrator's life after Joe Dunn. Even though the story was about Joe Dunn, a page or two devoted to the narrator's life would have been both enjoyable and immersive. The story's main angle seems to be the way the visions men and women fight for rarely come to be when stacked up against the ambitions of unscrupulous, intelligent and wealthy men and women. It would have been nice to truly nail down the futility of Joe Dunn's efforts if Ennis had spent a few moments showing how unscrupulous, rich men and women were still running roughshod over "average townsfolk" long after Dunn had died.
Maybe Ennis was trying to say there need to be more spiritual successors to Joe Dunn and that's why he didn't paint the story in that light. If that were the case, I with he'd spent more time on the heroism of the average people than just two or three pages at the very end of the yarn.
Even accounting for the flaws, Ennis' good writing makes a somewhat formulaic Western fresh and enjoyable.Streets Of Glory Hardcover OverviewAt the tail end of a lifetime of violence, Joseph R. Dunn arrives in the little town of Gladback, Montana, in search of one last chance at peace. Soldier, lawman, gunfighter, bounty hunter, he has seen America grow from the wilderness, and done more than his fair share of killing to make it so. Now he meets friends old and new, and finds a long-lost love in whose arms he hopes to end his days. But the worst of the frontier has not quite disappeared. Dunn's past returns to haunt him in the shape of Red Crow, an Apache renegade with a thirst for blood. Hunting down this murderous fiend proves difficult enough, but there are forces at work that bullets cannot harm, and foes lurking in the shadows that cannot be fought with Army Colt of Henry Rifle. A living legend rides out for one last battle, in a tale by Garth Ennis (Preacher).
