Crossed #0 A Cover A ReviewCrossed has to be one of the hardest edged comics to come out in a long time. It pushes the envelope, too, as you can see from some of the reactionary types that are out there. Amazingly, people still keep reading it, perhaps saying something about their inner demons and less about the page.
Crossed is a viral form of horrific, transmitting itself along the states and managing to kill everyone. In the first piece (you need this one, too, even though it is a #0) you have a person walk into a bar with a piece of a human and place it on the bar before going crazy. Then there is the burning alive in the car, the blindness that comes from the explosion of a jet, and that is only the start.
I say it is only the start because Crossed takes all the horror in a person and makes it that much worse.
Imagine, if you will, a person that would use their own "contaminants" to put on bullets just to make sure you got infected by a bullet. Or maybe people who like to send other skydiving without parachutes. Or killers, sadists, and people with donkey parts - the vilest ones - using that to keep control of thei rpack. Yeah, they are the baddies. Then imagine the good guys - the kind that need to kill the young because they can't keep up, the kind that find out that some of their number might have once been serial killers; there are so many twisted things that they could really be a picture of the rela world.
That's the scary part, too. The people here could be real - they could be us only we wouldn't dare admit it.
It is things like that that make Crossed so great because, in the end, there are no rela heroes. There are some people that help out and they are sometimes better for it but, for the most part, they suffer for their kindness. Only the ruthless seem to thrive in a world that has gone mad and, in movie and books, people like to omit that. Unicorns are real, Santa brings presents, and a viral contagion is going to make us better people. Yeah.
you should check it all out - there are 10 parts counting this #0 and, thusfar, it has shocked me and surprised me and made me think that Kansas is not a good place for any kind of Toto.
Recommended.Crossed #0 A Cover A Overview

Garth Ennis' 303 ReviewThe story "303" is told from the POV of a Russian Soldier who is leading a team to investigate a private U.S. plane that has crashed in the mountains of Afghanistan. The mystery regarding the crash arises when Americans dcline offers of assistance from nighboring countries such as Britain. So, basically this piques the interest of the British and the Russians as they set out to investigate the wrecage with the Americans on the way to safeguard their secret. What ensues is a bloody battle within the three factions and the death of innocent villagers as the Americans carpet-bomb a nearby village to preserve their secret. But at the end, the old Russain soldier survives and what he discovers entails a deal between the American government and a private corporation regarding rebuilding placns for Afghnistan, Iraq and eventually Iran and N. Korea. The soldier then sets out for the United States specifically Texas with a goal of his own. That's as far as I am going to go with the plot without spoiling anything.
In this book Ennis uses the protagonist, the Russian soldier as a vehicle for exploring and commenting on the dark side of war. He comments on the present and past squirmishes between Afghanistan and the West. He also delievers a shocking and controversial ending which I honestly did not see coming. The book is well written and represents another solid tale questioning war morality a la Ennis' Unknown Soldier.
Let's talk about the art. It complements the story very well and does its job to convey the story. It gets a bit gory at times but this is after all a war story so, shouldn't come as a surprise. The art itself is clean and crisp. Jacen Burrows is a great artist and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
If you want to read a story that will leave you thinking, my recommendation is to pick this book up.Garth Ennis' 303 OverviewDeep in the mountains of Afghanistan, a dozen Russian special forces soldiers race their British opponents for a secret neither of them can imagine. The Russian leader, a war-weary colonel who knows no other life but conflict, carries old ghosts that refuse to let him be. But the battle that awaits him deep in this ancient land will change his life forever, and send him on a violent journey no sane man would contemplate. The ultimate soldier meets his destiny, in a tale from Garth Ennis, the creator of PREACHER.

Streets Of Glory Hardcover ReviewGarth Ennis' penchant for good character writing shows plainly in this graphic novel. While not a new story, every possible Western having been put to page long ago, Garth Ennis' wonderful take on classic Westerns is well worth a read.
The story follows the recounting of a man's reminiscence of the time he spent with Joe Dunn, a former COL in the U.S. Army. It includes the gut-wrenching visuals interpreted excellently by Mike Wolfer, a fantastic illustrator who doesn't get enough work in my opinion and as I said before, Garth Ennis' great character development and design.
Every character in this story which has a name also has a personality which is distinct and important. One grows to care about them as one reads on and knowing Ennis' tendency to allow reality to impact a story in a very "no one is safe" way makes you think it's entirely possible that when one of them is imperiled as soon as you turn the page you could witness their death. Without offering any spoilers, I'll simply say the character writing is top-notch.
While the character writing is very good, the story itself is very truncated. It is enjoyable, but I believe it should have been at least 1/3rd longer than it was. If it were a movie I'd say I thought it was the victim of overly aggressive editing. I wish the relationships in the stories had more time to flesh themselves out, from the first page to the last. I wish we knew more about the narrator's life after Joe Dunn. Even though the story was about Joe Dunn, a page or two devoted to the narrator's life would have been both enjoyable and immersive. The story's main angle seems to be the way the visions men and women fight for rarely come to be when stacked up against the ambitions of unscrupulous, intelligent and wealthy men and women. It would have been nice to truly nail down the futility of Joe Dunn's efforts if Ennis had spent a few moments showing how unscrupulous, rich men and women were still running roughshod over "average townsfolk" long after Dunn had died.
Maybe Ennis was trying to say there need to be more spiritual successors to Joe Dunn and that's why he didn't paint the story in that light. If that were the case, I with he'd spent more time on the heroism of the average people than just two or three pages at the very end of the yarn.
Even accounting for the flaws, Ennis' good writing makes a somewhat formulaic Western fresh and enjoyable.Streets Of Glory Hardcover OverviewAt the tail end of a lifetime of violence, Joseph R. Dunn arrives in the little town of Gladback, Montana, in search of one last chance at peace. Soldier, lawman, gunfighter, bounty hunter, he has seen America grow from the wilderness, and done more than his fair share of killing to make it so. Now he meets friends old and new, and finds a long-lost love in whose arms he hopes to end his days. But the worst of the frontier has not quite disappeared. Dunn's past returns to haunt him in the shape of Red Crow, an Apache renegade with a thirst for blood. Hunting down this murderous fiend proves difficult enough, but there are forces at work that bullets cannot harm, and foes lurking in the shadows that cannot be fought with Army Colt of Henry Rifle. A living legend rides out for one last battle, in a tale by Garth Ennis (Preacher).

Chronicles Of Wormwood: The Last Enemy ReviewI really enjoyed the first Wormwood and was really looking forward to this one. For those who don't know what this book is about... it's about the Devil's son and Jesus. Very, very irreverant. Let alone what they do with the Pope. NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED OR GROSSED OUT. Then again, if you like that thing, it's pretty good.
The art and story are up to par with the first TPB. The story as well. Lacking is the page count which numbers 48. Of which approximately 42 involve Wormwood. The others are short stories by Garth Ennis as well. They're not bad, just that I am a glutton for dark humor and wanted more. Oh well.Chronicles Of Wormwood: The Last Enemy OverviewThe Chronicles of Wormwood continues in this all-new original graphic novel that picks up right after the original trade paperback! Wormwood, Jimmy, and Jay all return and the world hasn't gotten any better since their last adventure. Wormwood still produces questionable TV shows and pines for Maggie, his lost love. The boys all share drinks at their favorite pub and try to get on with their lives, but Pope Jacko has his own plans for Wormwood. In order to dispatch the Anti-Christ once-and-for-all, he calls upon his finest Holy assassin, Brother One, the Killer Eunuch!

Garth Ennis Dicks Volume 1 Review... of two Northern Irish reprobates, Dougie and Ivor, who decide to become (hopeless) private detectives, and along with their friends Willy, Spence and Wanker, get into a hell of a lot more trouble than they bargained for, thanks to their acquaintance Big Billy, a mysterious man called Bell, and Ivor's ex-uncle (I say ex-uncle because he appears as a ghost... but you can find the details out for yourself).
I've never seen a comic so depraved. Then again, I've never seen a comic so funny! Excellent stuff, but definitely NOT for the easily offended.Garth Ennis Dicks Volume 1 OverviewGood lord, it's Garth Ennis and John McCrea, the creative team behind "Hitman", unleashing their sick, twisted minds and bringing to life Dougie and Ivor, the rotten scoundrels who fancy themselves private investigators known as the Dicks. This super-engorged trade paperback features the original four issue "Bigger Dicks" series, the totally depraved back-up stories, and also includes an all-new guide to the terms, words, and phrases that are used in the series so you can actually finally understand what the Hell is being said! Garth and John swear this book has assured their place next to the Dark Lord in the eternal flames of Hell, so c'mon and join the evil party! No semi-turgid comics here, just full-on, over-the-top, certain-to-offend-everyone humor that only these two bollockses could get away with!

Crossed, Vol. 1 ReviewThe blurb says it all. It's Ennis...at his most depraved. This book was so disturbing that at times I wanted to put it down, but my interest in the characters compelled me to keep reading through rape - of men and women(while they wer mutilated in one case), chidren mutilated and dismembered unto death, and every other sordid nearly (and sometimes certainly) pornographic act of violence in this collection.
In short, if extreme gore and violence depicted beautifully isn't your thing stay away.
If you love Garth Ennis, and can handle comic book violence in the extreme, you'll enjoy this read.
I give it four stars, because as I have stated at least twice already, it is Garth Ennis - and if you have read his work then you know that alone should make it a five, but, because some of it was so gonzo that I just felt Ennis was like a little kid eating worms, seeing if he could make you throw up in your mouth a little, I left one off.
If you haven't read the boys then you are missing a great series, although it has started to digress a little needlessly, and it needs to pick up. I highly recommend The Boys and Preacher.Crossed, Vol. 1 OverviewIn the blink of an eye, humanity is lost, and the Crossed are upon us. Men, women, and children alike fall victim to the mystery infection that makes killers out of parents and rapists out of lovers. Ruthless, berserk, and evil beyond measure, these cackling demons spread their plague across the Earth, brining humanity to near-extinction. Now, a small band of survivors make their cautious way across a deserted America, existing in a state of constant terror. The only thing they have in common is their determination to survive... but in this frightening new world, survival has a cost all its own. How far will they go to stay alive, and can they do so without become monsters themselves?

Garth Ennis' Chronicles Of Wormwood ReviewPhenomenal!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely phenomenal!!!!
Ennis' closest series to "Preacher", and easily his most hilarious yet!!! (which is saying a lot)
I can personally guarantee you'll laugh until your eyes drown in tears,
till your guts split from your sides, your lungs deflate, and you suffocate on your own laughter.
This title is just that amazing!!!
There's all kinds of sex, & blood,
a reluctant Antichrist and his talking rabbit,
strategically-placed genitalia, more sex, booze,
oceans of blasphemy, plans for armageddon,
a wild-road-trip straight into the heart of the underworld,
even more blood, a sexually-crazed pope, Judas, Jesus, Joan of Arc,
and of course, the roads of Hell.... which are paved in mimes.
The art is clean & crisp courtesy of Jacen Burrows who also worked with Ennis on 303 for the same "Avatar" label.
And the colors are nothing short of amazing.
If you know the name Garth Ennis, you already know what kind of story you're in for.
But beware, none of his tails have ever been so ridiculously funny.
If you want to laugh,
and you don't mind sex, booze, blood, & blasphemy,
this title is your unholy grail.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
