Warren Ellis' Apparat Volume 1 ReviewWarren Ellis tried to figure out how adventure comics would have developed without sixty-odd years of super hero comics. The result is a series of one-shots that follow some of the classic themes of the old action comics. This volume collects the first four.
Science Fiction is up first with a very bizarre tale and amazing graphics (you really have to pay attention to all of the little details in the graphics).
Detective fiction takes an interesting turn with a detective who has a tendency to sleep in dumpsters. He and his new partner have a murder to solve.
The wonder of Pilot heroes follows as a flying ace retires from a team of hero pilots. This one is a little strange as well as being a pilot has little to do with the story. Also the art was unstable with characters looking young one moment and beyond middle age the next and vice versa.
The final story takes the mantle of Doc Savage, The Shadow and The Spider with a different eccentric millionaire fighting crime with the help of strange substances. I felt this was the best overall considering both story and art.
Readers will be a little disappointed to find out how long we might have to wait for any more of these stories and there is also a tendency to want to see more stories about some of these characters (I really liked the detective). Warren Ellis' Bad World ReviewBad World came as something of a surprise to me. I was expecting a more traditional story; What Writer Warren Ellis delivers is an extended essay/monologue about various and sundry disturbed and disturbing individuals Ellis has (Supposedly) found through the internet. The reader is bombarded with literally dozens of bizarre stories, each more outlandish and horrific than the last, including, but not limited to, Alien Abduction, Cannibalism, Necrophilia, Beastiality, weird Presidential candidates, etc. The art, by Jacen Burrows, is ok; nothing exceptional, but the single-page illustrations and double-page spreads do a decent job of conveying Ellis' ideas. Are the stories you'll encounter in Bad World true? Who knows. In the end, does it really matter? Gravel: Never A Dull Day (Signed Hardcover) ReviewI'm surprised no one has reviewed this yet. I'm a fan of a lot of Ellis' more recent work, so after picking up the trade paperback of "Strange Killings: Body Orchard" (which is included in this volume) I decided to pick up this collection. I wasn't disappointed. It's a great little package collecting all of the previous mini series starring LT. Gravel, the combat magician. A very inventive take on magic in modern times. I'm not a big fan of Mike Wolfer's artwork, but he gets the job done in quite cinematic ways.
The only thing that kept this from a full five stars is there was not any introduction, behind the scenes, or bonus material as far as concept sketches, etc from the creators. For a collection of this sort that's a real shame. In fact it's pretty inexcusable. Too bad. If you haven't picked these up yet this is a great way to get them all in one package.

Scars ReviewIts a tough call, I love warren Ellis and Burrow's creations, but this story doesn't suit Burrows style of artwork sadly. The story is pretty unoriginal, but a solid cop story altogether. However it could of been better in many respects.Scars OverviewHow much of a monster do you have to become to hunt monsters? Detective John Cain is a hard man. He's been working homicides long enough that he can withstand almost anything, even wrenching personal loss. But everyone has a limit, as he discovers when assigned to the investigation of a child killing. It's not enough to be a good cop, to follow the procedure and ensure that scum go to prison. To honor the chilling promise he gave to the dead child's parents -- to find the killer using any means necessary -- Cain will have to cross lines and do whatever it takes to bring bloody justice to the killer.

Warren Ellis' Atmospherics ReviewAs the previous review states, Avatar really lets Warren Ellis cut like nothing Marvel or DC have ever let him before, and Atmospherics is proof of that. A very short graphic novel, Atmospherics deals with a woman claiming to be the lone survivor of a town whose population was massacred by alien beings. So she says, but did she commit these acts herself under the delusion of heroin use? That's the main question as Ellis' interrogation unfolds, and leads to bigger and better things as well. Everything you'd come to expect about Ellis' style is here: his penchant for paranoid feelings, poppy dialogue, and science fact and fiction are all used very nicely here. Ken Meyer provides stark black and white artwork as well, which suits the dark and dreary tone of the book. Ellis also provides an afterword, which finds the author offering a scathing discussion on alien blamed cow mutilations and Communion author Whitley Striber. The only real downside to Atmospherics is that it's over too soon, but the book is still worth picking up for Ellis fans regardless.Warren Ellis' Atmospherics Overview"Warren Ellis' Atmospherics".

No Hero ReviewThe authors work seems to go in cycles. First a brilliant work (Transmetropolitan) then a lesser work along the same themes that seems to be made up of ideas he couldn't get around to before (Doktor Sleepless). To use an SAT question Transmetropolitan is to Doktor Sleepless as Black Summer is tooooo....that's right No Hero.
A convoluted and rushed plot this story is chock full of throw away characters and half explored ideas. What is truly tragic about this book is that you can see on every page and panel how it could have been better. But what we're left with is a rather entertaining but sparse outline of a third act. Had he explored deeper into anyone of a dozen characters or shown us the history of the Front line/Levellers instead of told us this would have been a richer and more complete story.
Fine for completest but by no means necessary. Read the superior Black Summer if you want to explore a more realistic and horrific take on super heroes.No Hero OverviewForty years ago, a group of superhumans emerged in San Francisco, guided by a man whose unique new drugs gave them incredible powers. Aetheric Mechanics ReviewAetheric Mechanics is one of the newest releases from Apparat, the independent line of Warren Ellis-dominated comics. As a vanity press, Apparat publications have a tendency to vary wildly in their quality of work. In Aetheric Mechanics, however, the creative team of Ellis and Pagliarani has produced something very close to perfect.
In Aetheric Mechanics, Doctor Richard Watcham reunites with his old friend, detective Sax Raker. Against a backdrop of zeppelin attacks and mysterious 'aetheric' technology, the pair chase down an elusive serial killer - one who flickers in and out of existence like a ghost. Despite the short length (40something pages), Aetheric Mechanics manages to introduce a fantastic steampunk universe, craft an engaging mystery and then introduce a plot twist that successfully tossesevery other steampunk world into the backseat. If it sounds complicated, it actually isn't - thanks to the writing and the art, the story is so absorbing it is easy to follow from start to finish. In further testament to the creative team's skill, the clever narrative devices and plot twists are also all secondary to the characters. Although the reader is constantly rocked by fantastic revelations, the emphsis is always on the characters and never on self-congratulatory world building.
Gianluca Pagliarani is an inspired choice for an artist. Although black and white, Pagliarani manages to lever in the detail necessary to bring the world of Aetheric Mechnics to life. The layout - especially vital in a space this short - is neatly done, balancing small panels of minute detail with breath-taking city-scapes.
Aetheric Mechanics is clever, clearly experimental and very entertaining. It pushes the boundaries of a fledgling genre, challenges the reader and, above all, gives fans of the graphic novel another rare and must-have read. -- PORNOKITSCH

Freakangels Volume 1 Hardcover Review(Excerpt from my original review on ComicImpact.com)
The FREAKANGEL series is best summarized by its own introduction: "23 years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years ago, the world ended. This is the story of what happened next."
These "twelve strange children" are the now 20-something FreakAngels - a naturally genetically-improved breed of human with magnificent psychic capabilities and gritty sex appeal. And who, as we eventually gather through dialogue clues, are the ones actually responsible for the state of the partially water-submerged state of the world.
As the FreakAngels govern and protect London's Whitechapel-based community of post-apocalypse survivors with their extrasensory talents, they face rival gangs of survivors who pine after their agricultural advancements, weaponry, technology and property, and are consistently challenged by rebellion (and even attempted murder) among their own FreakAngel kind.
The dialogue in this series is most literally some of the best I've read in a graphic novel, maximizing Ellis' character development, storyline, and signature revisits to extropianism. The characters are precious, real and love/hateable. I especially adore Karl, the agri-bloke who minds the gardening and produce, and who dons a tinfoil hat to keep the other FreakAngels out of his thoughts. And then there's the powerful female, Sirkka, who attempts to reinvent the societal notion of romantic relationships by harboring a harem of sexually subservient men and women.
Each FreakAngel comes with his or her own super-abilities and personalities, using their specific talents (food production, medical services, engineering capabilites) to sustain Whitechapel.
"Newbie" illustrator Paul Duffield amazes with the portrayal of these mysterious folk: glowing purple eyes, fine, intricate lines and a type of grayscale/violet shading that successfully casts a cowering, gloomy shadow of Judgment Day tragedy over the entire yarn.
If you're more of a superheroes type of comic fan, I still suggest you perusing this series; it's a magnificent mix of steampunk, super powers, adventures and heroics.

The art is also very good and fits the story perfectly. If you're a fan of Ellis, this book is a must have. If you've never read Ellis before, this book is definitely worth a try. Warren Ellis Crecy ReviewCrecy just goes to show you that Warren Ellis is a true master of the comic book/graphic novel medium. Told from a soldier's perspective during the Battle of Crecy, Ellis manages to inject so much information in terms of historical weapon uses and battle techniques that you'll be turning the pages just to see what else you can learn alone. There is an engaging parallel to this generations-ago battle and the current war in Iraq (read Crecy's book description alone to get that), and Ellis' own dark humor is apparent as well. What's even more worth noting about Crecy is the ultra detailed, black and white artwork of Raulo Caceres, whose minor little details in faces and backgrounds are stunning to say the least. If there's any downsides to Crecy, it's that it is very short, and you'll be finished it in no time. Despite that though, there is something about Crecy that leaves a lasting impression, and for Warren Ellis fans, you already know that Crecy is worth picking up.Warren Ellis Crecy OverviewA highly-trained but under-equipped army invades another country due to the perceived threat to home security.
