My Final Work of Divine Indifference ReviewThe main focus of this slim volume of 4 essays is on the transition that took place in the work of Adi Da Samraj on July 10, 2007, where Adi Da Samraj confesses he began his ultimate and final work. These essays are very helpful in understanding both the nature of that transition and the unique profundity of this final work, which is a silent and forever work of Blessing all beings. My Final Work Is ME--Alone. Walk-About To Me. I Am Perfectly Beyond The East and Perfectly Free In The West. These are three very important communications from Adi Da Samraj about the nature of his work, and the nature of his function as spiritual master, born in the West, but teaching a unique way beyond eastern or western pattern.
So anyone who read books perhaps by Adi Da Samraj in the past, during his time as Da Free John, or even any published literature before 2007, was reading literature from the period of work prior to Adi Da's final work, which is altogether summarized and fully explicated in the fullness of The Aletheon. This small volume includes some of the key communications regarding the change in this manner of working, and in the importance of this final, completing, and forever spiritual transcendental blessing work.
Additionally there is an essay in this volume called Indivisible Perfect Space, which is the longest of the four essays. This is a profound essay that I hope every human being takes the time to read, consider, understand, and make use of. Adi Da Samraj points out in this essay the western tendency to seek in "objective space" (science, materialism, world-power, etc...), and the Eastern tendency to seek in "subjective space" (mysticism, asceticism, meditation, etc...). And with clear argument and instruction, Adi Da Samraj points out that reality, or the egoless Truth of all-and-All transcends both objective and subjective space, rather Indivisible Perfect Space is the Divine Conscious Light, the Source-Condition, in which and as which all arises and disappears. This is a uniquely powerful, important, and beautiful essay.
This is a short book, yet profoundly important, and full of wisdom, blessing, and sanity for the heart. My Final Work of Divine Indifference OverviewIn the decades and countless hours of Adi Da's teaching work, he submitted himself to people just as they are. Through that great process, he learned, noticed, dealt with and understood everyone and everything. During these years he also wrote many books in which he revealed his complete Divine Instruction. In this collection of essays from Adi Da Samraj describes his perfect retirement into Divine Indifference, free of any necessity to teach. That retirement signifies not an 'end' to his Divine work, but rather his freedom to be entirely concentrated in his most profound work of forever blessing all beings and things.
He writes:
I have Revealed and Given a Way that every human being can practice. I Made My Divine Avataric Self-Submission and (on That Basis) Did My Divine Avataric Teaching-Work and My Divine Avataric Revelation-Work and now I am Finished with All of That. . . . In My Finally Retired Divine Indifference, ... I Am (Inherently) Free Merely (and Only) to Be As I Am in My Divine and Avatarically Responsive Transcendental Spiritual Regard of all-and-All.

The Way of Perfect Knowledge ReviewI have read all the books in this set and each one takes you on a spiritual journey that gives you the tools to what is truly perfect peace and happiness. The Way of Perfect Knowledge OverviewAdi Da says that it is not possible to simply work towards the most perfect knowledge of Reality or Freedom, or, otherwise, merely declare It to be so. Many of us have seen this at work in our own case or in others. He says that knowledge must be given, directly transmitted, from the Source. And before one can become fully available to spiritual transmission, radical self-understanding must unlock the self-contracted body-mind, so divine transmission can be truly felt at heart. Adi Da has described the practices that are the basis of this process in this book. One of them is to no matter what emotions, thoughts or knots of the body arise, to simply grant whole bodily feeling-attention to Adi Da, rather than struggle with any of the contents of experience. Eventually, when devotional turning is established there is the constant, effortless capability of heart-Communion with him. Those who took on this practice confess it is profoundly liberating! Adi Da does not merely wants to be believed, his way is to be found out by all those interested in Divine Liberation.
There is no problem. No search is necessary. All seeking is Priorly dissolved in the Intrinsic Transcendental Spiritual Self-Apprehension of Reality Itself (or the Intrinsically Self-Evident Real Self-Condition Itself). --Adi Da Samraj

Radical Devotion (The Way of Perfect Knowledge series) ReviewThis remarkable book about living the devotional relationship to the guru is a companion volume to 'The Way of Perfect Knowledge'
by Adi Da Samraj.
Taken together, these books present an incomparable teaching to spiritual aspirants of all traditions. A great treasure.Radical Devotion (The Way of Perfect Knowledge series) OverviewRadica Devotion is a direct invitation from Adi Da to anyone and everyone. In these new essays, he speaks to the heart-depth of our being, to our longing for Truth and profound experience. The core of Adi Da's Way is simply the relationship with him and it unfolds entirely on the basis of recognition of his "Bright" and Divine State. To recognize Adi Da is to be utterly heart-moved by the sight of him, to wordlessly "know" his bodily communication of non-separateness and freedom with every aspect of one's being. This tacit "knowing" is as direct and obvious as physically entering a sacred place--and the force of Adi Da's spiritual state tangibly transforms the being. Adi Da tells us that human beings can be free of all bondage and free of the struggle. In the ecstasy of devotion to him, we enter into a truly serious and most deeply joyful process--one that is unique in human time. In that process, the heart's true longing is utterly fulfilled.

The Liberator (The "Perfect Knowledge" Series) ReviewThis book is a profound scripture of the highest caliber.
I found that studying it was a form of meditation, and was a
moving encounter with a unique and powerful spiritual master.
Highly recommended to all spiritual aspirants. The Liberator (The "Perfect Knowledge" Series) OverviewThere is an ancient saying:"You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." What troubles human beings most, Adi Da has found, is their lack of knowledge of what Reality, God or Freedom is truly about, what It ultimately is. In this book, the truth that he gives is the truth about Reality or God. He says that spiritual liberation is notof this worldit has nothing to do with the body-mind. But, at the same time, true liberation is not based on an effort to escape bodily life and the natural conditions of existence. The sublime truth beyond this koan lies in the relationship to the spiritual master and in the practice. But he also makes known is that this freedom not reachable by merely human means, not even the most heroic spiritual effort because we require Help from Beyond. And he gives that help in this book. Through his divine incarnation into human Form, and through his teaching, he enables human beings to be free, liberated, alive as Reality itself, rather than crushed by the burden of mortality and ignorance. He invites you to find out for yourself. What is there to lose?"This book is a must for spiritual aspirants . . . an unfailing guide to all true devotees."K. D. Tangod, Writing in Pathway to God magazine"Adi Da's Teachings have tremendous significance for humanity. . . . He represents a foundation and a structure for sanity."Robert K. Hall, M.D. Psychiatrist; author, Out of Nowhere; Co-founder, The Lomi School and The Lomi ClinicAdi Da: "Truth Is the Ultimate Form (or the Inherently Perfect State) of "Knowledge" (if mere knowledge becomes Truth-Realization).Truth Is That Which, when fully Realized (and, Thus, "Known", even via the transcending of all conditional knowledge and all conditional experience), Sets you Free from all bondage and all seeking."

Radical Transcendentalism ReviewIf one is to understand the infinitely profound work of Adi Da Samraj, then The Aletheon stands as his singular, unlimitedly profound, vast, and comprehensive communication, in over 2300 pages. For those ready to swim deeply in the joy-filled waters of The Aletheon, "Radical" Transcendentalism stands as an excellent collection of essays from The Aletheon, and as good introduction to the basics of Adi Da Samraj's offering of the egoless Reality-Way of Adidam. The Non-"Religious", Post-"Scientific", and No-Seeking Reality-Way of Adidam is a most beautiful and unique subtitle, so true, so wise, so ecstatically profound.
Part One, "Radical" Transcendentalism, contains two lengthy essays, Perfect Dis-Illusionment and Radical Adidam. These are profound communications about the nature of Reality and the singular means for the actual realization of Reality. Perfect Dis-Illusionment speaks to the falsity of seeking, in religious or scientific or any terms. And to the tacit intuition of the reality condition, nature, and state that transcends the endless seeking as ego-self. In Radical Adidam speaks of the "Direct Means of Reality Itself". This is entirely different from the self-based paths of seeking that are what traditional spiritual approaches represent. A new way, path, means, and understanding. A most "radical" communication.
Part Two, What is Radical, Right, and Perfect?, focuses on the three root aspects of the Reality-Way of Adidam, Radical Devotion, Right Life, and Perfect Knowledge. Each of these aspects is dealt with in an extensive summary essay, the root-essence of devotion, of right life (or sane, egoless, functional, wisdom-based, and ego-transcending human life patterning), and of "Perfect Knowledge" (or true jnana, Real-God-Realization, Self-Realization, Truth-Realization, Reality-Realization) are explicated deeply and fully. And from the direct realization of the great Reality-Realizer Adi Da Samraj. The essay The Intrinsic Self-Exercise of Perfect Knowledge is a radical explication of non-duality, which is a self-authenticating communication of the vast depth of H.D.P. Adi Da Samraj's egoless Self-Realization of the Source-Condition that is Reality Itself.
Part Three, NO Form of Mind Is the "Perfect Knowledge" of Reality Itself, contains four essays which speak to the impossibility of mind, or point-of-view, or waking-state-awareness, or any-state-awareness, to know Reality which necessarily transcends mind, and change, and all forms of imperfect knowledge. The purity of Adi Da Samraj's wisdom-realization shines through this section of wisdom essays, for these utterances are obviously by someone who has transcended mind and all that we hold dear in our waking-state-ego-identified limited awareness.
Part Four, The "Perfect Practice" of "Perfect Knowledge", Is The Avatarically Given Divine Way of Adidam continues the consideration from the previous section in a lengthy explication as to "Perfect Knowledge" being itself the only Reality-Realization State and Process, and how "Perfect Practice" takes place prior to mind, body, self, other, search, world, and thought. This essay indicates over and over again the radical nature of the Reality-Way of Adidam, and the radical calling to intrinsic egolessness and direct Reality-Realization via the Reality-Revelation-Transmission given directly by Adi Da Samraj in his Spiritual Master function. This not philosophy, but rather Transcendental Spiritual Reality-Realization being explained in human language.
Part Five, Perfect Adidam: (The Divine Way That Is Avatarically Self-Revealed By and AS Reality Itself), offers a summary consideration of the uniqueness of the Reality-Way of Adidam as the Way of Reality Itself, and an altogether new-born, radical, real, sane, wise, and altogether ego-transcending Way of Realization, a Realizer's way, not a seeker's path.
These wisdom communications from Adi Da's Summary Dharma, The Aletheon, are beautiful, profound, and utterly clear. The Radical Transcendentalism of the Way of Adidam is no-seeking in Reality Itself, a great Mystery, and a perfect gift to every egoless heart.Radical Transcendentalism Overview"Between the covers of this book, there are words that communicate great philosophical and practical import. But, like the fullest experience of a great work of art, to come upon the words of Adi Da Samraj is to participate in an event that can not be encompassed by language. ... this book itself is only a vehicle for "meeting" the One Who Speaks these words--and for discovering the Truth he has come to make plain to everyone. ... As the subtitle of this book indicates, Adi Da Samraj is offering a "non-'religious' and post-'scientific'" revelation of Reality, coincident with a "radical" understanding about the "nature" of the "self" we presume to be. The separate "self" (or ego-"I") is, he says, not something we are being, rather the separate "self" (or ego-I) is something we are doing. Adi Da's Way of Adidam is the Way of "radical" transcending of this contraction... . Only when such "radical" transcending of the ego is the case is it possible to truly "know" (or Intrinsically Intuit) Reality Itself.- from the IntroductionIn this collection of essays from THE (the third book of The "M" Trilogy), Adi Da's in-depth, "radical"analysis of the primal fault of "self"and"other"makes way for a deeper sensitivity to and tangible understanding of his no-seeking Way of "Perfect Knowledge". You will find many brand new essays here, as well as the current form of "The Five Reality-Teachings", and potent Instruction on the signs of right life in the Way of Adidam."The writings of Adi Da Samraj are the most doctrinally thorough, the most philosophically sophisticated, the most culturally challenging, and the most creatively original literature on radical nonduality currently available in the English language."JEFFREY J. KRIPAL, J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religious Studies, Rice University; Author, Kali's Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna

My "Bright" Word ReviewSubtitled "Discourses from The Divine Siddha-Method Of The Ruchira Avatar--The Divine Way Of Adidam Is An ego-Transcending Relationship, Not An ego-Centric Technique " this large (544 page) volume includes many of the original talks given by then Franklin Jones when he began to teach by opening a small ashram in Los Angeles.
Rather than being approached by serious spiritual aspirants rooted in a culture of respect and understanding of how to relate to a Guru, Adi Da Samraj was approached by very ordinary seekers coming out of the hippie era in modern America. As such, Adi Da Samraj began his compassionate submission-work by entering into relationship with all who came to Him, and giving instruction on every aspect of human, religious, spiritual, transcendental and Divine life to very ordinary, even spiritually retarded, western aspirants.
This book is full of beautiful instruction and unique radical reality-based-wisdom: the falsity and utterly futility of seeking. The process of understanding the activity that is the ego, the activity of separation and separateness, that allows the transcendental spiritual process to unfold in reality. Understanding the root-cause of seeking: which is always egoity itself. The means of dealing with the basic human processes of "money, food, and sex" such that a right life of sane discipline and ego-transcendence emerges. The function of the Guru in common society as prophet, or critic of the usual ego-based everything. The infinite Love-Bliss-Light that is the egoless Reality-Realization of non-dual "Bright" Reality-Truth. The absolute necessity for the Guru. Intense criticism of cultism, or the immature ego-based approach to a true spiritual master which utterly avoids the true depth of ego-transcendence inherent in esoteric spiritual practice. Criticism of childish belief in savior-God. And fierce criticism of adolescent self-based seeking in every form, and a freely sane calling to mature adult ego-surrendered spiritual life and culture. A free wisdom elaboration of the truth beyond eastern subjectivity and western objectivity, the call to radical understanding and altogether right life.
Profound transcendental spiritual revelations of what true enlightenment is, what the nature, state, and condition of consciousness truly Is. And vast instruction on the sacred, eternal, and profound process of Satsang, of the ego-transcending relationship with Adi Da Samraj as Sat-Guru in the Reality-Way of Adidam. Criticism of the endless paths of ego-centric technique, or method, that are any ego-based attempt at liberation, freedom, enlightenment, or Reality-Realization. And altogether a full and complete explication of what true Transcendental Spiritual life and Realization require, for real, from any true aspirant.
As such, this is not popular literature, nor ego-life affirming in any way, as this communication deeply confronts every presumptious illusion that ego makes, and especially the arguments of self-suffiency the Western adolescent seeking-fulfillment ego proposes. This communication is about the anciently required (and vastly respected) ego-transcending esoteric devotional relationship to a true Guru, a process of surrender of ego-self in devotion, not a process of ego-in-charge. And Guru means "One who reveals the Light and thereby liberates beings from darkness". Guru is Bliss. ego is stuff and change and death. Challenging. Intense. Delicious. Inspirational. Beautiful. Profound. Wisdom. Ecstatic. Sublimely self-evidently real. True spiritual instruction at the Feet of One Who Knows, and Freely Gives. For those who notice that seeking only begets more seeking, from and to the same ego-place, this book is a nectar of relief, as what is offered is an ego-transcending relationship, not an ego-centric technique of seeking. For those not ready, by virtue of some serious self-and-life-examination, to surrender at the Feet of a Master, for the esoteric spiritual process beyond belief and search (beyond mere ideas) this book may seem strange, offensive, or even absurd. Guru devotion isn't popular in the West. ego-surrender is not popular, in fact it is anethema.
And, in a significant communication at the beginning of the book, Adi Da Samraj has written the essay "Do Not Misunderstand ME..." so that any reader rightly understands the egoless non-local Consciousness-Position that Adi Da Samraj speaks from, and as, and thereby how to rightly understand His comprehensive and altogether spiritually esoteric Guru-Function and Work.
A book one could, perhaps, compare and contrast this book with is Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi (Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, a collection of talks given by Sri Ramana Maharshi when approached by aspirants at his ashram in India. What if Sri Ramana Maharshi opened an ashram in a large American city, where nobody had a clue?
My "Bright" Word is egoless Dharma instruction given by an enlightened Master who took compassionate conscious birth in the West, in order to offer the Divinely Liberating Way to both ancient East and modern West. Full of humor, freedom, love, and wisdom instruction for all thirsting hearts.
My "Bright" Word is, simply, "Bright".My "Bright" Word OverviewA new edition of the collection of classic Spiritual Discourses originally published as The Method of the Siddhas. In this extraordinary series of Discourses from His early Teaching Years, Avatar Adi Da Communicates an exquisite summary of His "radical" Teaching-Revelation, and He passionately Offers to everyone the Gift of the heart-relationship to Him (or Satsang with Him), as the True Means of Divine Liberation. In My "Bright" Word, Avatar Adi Da elucidates the fundamentals of "radical" self-understanding, which principles are the foundation of His Revelation of the Way of Adidam. My "Bright" Word is a Gift Avatar Adi Da has Given to all--for the purpose of Divine Liberation for those who choose It. In this book, Avatar Adi Da makes it possible for anyone to read the first formal Instruction Given by Him--the Divine Heart-Master, the Very Incarnation of Truth Itself (or Reality Itself).

The Ancient Reality-Teachings ("Perfect Knowledge" Series) (Perfect Knowledge Series) ReviewThis review applies equally to Reality Is All The God There Is: The Single Transcendental Truth Taught by the Great Sages and the Revelation of Reality Itself, which is essentially the same textual material.
"Reality Itself is the only basis for true sanity and well-being". This books is subtitled: "The Single Transcendental Truth Taught by the Great Sages of Buddhism and Advaitism".
So this book is about the egoless Reality and Real God that is Transcendental Truth, and reveals that absolute non-dual Reality is the essentail Truth. Or, a non-dual, ecstatic, sane, wise, and entirely egoless Reality-Revelation and Way of Reality, not an ego-way.
What is this book about? First of all this book includes extraordinary free renderings of traditional buddhist and advaitic texts, freely rendered in the English language by the fully enlightened Avataric Great Sage, Adi Da Samraj. Works of the Buddha, Nagarjuna, Adi Shankara made to speak alive and anew for all time. The Ribhu Gita sung again, so that all future generations may taste the undying wisdom of primal Reality-Wisdom. These renderings greatly expand upon the meaning, context, and content of these ancient texts, invigorating them, clarifying them, honing precious reality-wisdom and bringing purity of Reality-Truth. Not a mind-based scholarly rendition, but a spiritually discerning heart-clarification of root-wisdom. Just those renderings make this a precious gem of infinite value.
So in making these renderings, in clarifying these traditional teachings, Adi Da Samraj is demonstrating an absolute mastery of understanding of both Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. Most penetrating insight, most clarifying language, and altogether most revelatory of the essential reality-truth that underlies both of these transcendentalist traditions.
But additionally are Adi Da Samraj's focused Essays and discourses on the root matters of transcendental spirituality found in both Buddhism and Advaitism, and his own unique offering of the Reality-Way of Adidam. Considering the presumed historical differences between the traditions, yet always coming back to the root Reality-Teachings of Truth that are the essential essence of both. Considering the difference between talk and actual Realization of Reality-Truth. Clarifying questions offered by Adi Da Samraj's own devotees for the sake of awakening right understanding in all and All.
Indeed, in the final Essay, Advaita Buddha Dharma, a very clear conclusion is pointed at with profundity: the Truth is no-difference, indivisible, one. The language is apparently different between Buddhist and Advaitic Sages, Truth is ONE.
This text illuminates every transcendental truth given to humankind throughout the ages, and outshines all of that in newly enlivened freely rendered wisdom, light, and vast spacious brightness. Any serious student of spiritual esotericism, transcendental wisdom, buddhism, non-duality, Advaita Vedanta, or Ramana Maharshi will find wisdom-nectar and inspiration for practice in this extraordinary Spiritual Gift to all humankind.
And this text is profoundly critical of all ego-based approaches to transcendental and necessarily spiritual reality-truth. This book calls beings to the ego-transcending ordeal of rightly guided practice in esoteric school of authentic practice, neither talk or any mind form is sufficient for actual renunciate realization of egoless prior-to-mind Reality-Truth. As such this book is a beacon of unconditional sanity among the "talkers" of pseudo-spirituality in our adolescent age.
Indeed: Reality Is All The God There Is
This book is part of the "Way of Perfect Knowledge" series of books by Adi Da Samraj, the other titles being:
The Perfect Tradition (The Perfect Knowledge Series)
Religion and Reality (The Perfect Knowledge Series)
The Liberator (The "Perfect Knowledge" Series)
The Way of Perfect Knowledge (The Perfect Knowledge" Series)
Radical Devotion (The Way of Perfect Knowledge series)
And now, all of this material, fully and completely updated to the final instructions given by Avatar Adi Da Samraj, are found in the great Masterwork The Gnosticon
This volume, The Ancient Reality-Teachings, is a profoundly clarifying set of instruction and wisdom about reality-teachings and the great transcendentalist traditions of Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism. And a great revelation force of explication upon the intrinsically egoless Reality-Way of Adidam. The Ancient Reality-Teachings ("Perfect Knowledge" Series) (Perfect Knowledge Series) OverviewWhen Adi Da looked at "The Heart of the Ribhu Gita" he was moved to make his own rendering or "interpretive translation" of the text, in order to elucidate, and thereby honor, its full meaning. He was not intending to re-write the text from his point of view, but, rather, to draw out the real intention of Ribhu, as only another Realizer can. He also reviewed other great dharma from the tradition of Advaita Vedanta and from the Buddhist tradition. He was bringing the essence of the instruction to the fore. The texts whose meanings were only partially (or cryptically) expressed even in the original let alone in translation were suddenly shining forth, like rough gems cut by an expert hand. Adi Da chose to read these texts to his devotees. In each case, he was bringing the essence of the instruction, with an elegance and illumined understanding that left his devotees speechless in amazement. "The traditional texts presented by Me in this Book are only a few in number, but they are outstanding among the most important texts ever written. They are so much to the point that they are profoundly Illuminating--not sufficient for the Awakening of Transcendental Realization Itself, but potentially sufficient to bring anyone to practice at the feet of a true Master. " Adi Da Samraj "To understand the great religions in a new light, one has only to read Adi Da Samraj. Anyone who has an open mind cannot help feeling that his description of the Supreme Yoga of the seventh stage of life is true. Intuitively you will be convinced that Adi Da Samraj knows what he is talking about because of his unique Realization." Roger Savoie, PhD, Philosopher, writer and translator Author: La Vipere et le Lion La Voie radicale de la Spiritualite [The Snake and the Lion, the Radical Way of Spirituality]

The Avatar of What Is ReviewWhen you discover the profound and life-changing books of Adi Da Samraj, you might want to read this basic, well-written biography of his unique life and spiritual work. Dr. Lee's book is highly recommended for this.
Then you may wish to continue by reading The Knee of Listening,
Adi Da's remarkable spiritual autobiography, which is truly a must-read for everyone interested in spiritual life and philosophy.
Highly recommended. The Avatar of What Is Overview In the depth of every being lies the inherent heart-impulse to be completely and utterly Free. In this book, you will be introduced to the life and teaching of Adi Da Samraj, who not only speaks to this impulse, but who is that freedom, communicating itself to you in every possible way, through his person, his teaching and his art. To find him is to find the very heart of Reality tangibly known by you, at heart, as the deepest truth of existence. This is the great mystery that you are invited to discover. When Adi Da Samraj was born, in New York in 1939, he was completely aware of his Divine condition. He existed only as this radiant state, full of Love-Bliss, and named it the "Bright". Around the age of two years, in a spontaneous gesture of love toward those around him, he relinquished the enjoyment of the "Bright" and identified with the self-contracted state of ordinary beings. This initiated an unprecedented ordeal of relentless investigation into the Nature of Reality. In this book, Carolyn Lee tells the remarkable story of Adi Da's life and work. "Even as a baby, I remember only crawling around inquisitively with a boundless Feeling of Joy, Light, and Freedom in the middle of my head that was bathed in Energy moving unobstructed in a Circle down from above, all the way down, then up, all the way up, and around again, and always Shining from my heart. It was an Expanding Sphere of Joy from the heart. And I was a Radiant Form, the Source of Energy, Love-Bliss, and Light in the midst of a world that is entirely Energy, Love-Bliss, and Light. I was the Power of Reality, a direct Enjoyment and Communication of the One Reality. I was the Heart Itself, Who Lightens the mind and all things.I was the same as every one and every thing, except it became clear that others were apparently unaware of the "Thing " Itself.Even as a little child, I recognized It and Knew It, and my life was not a matter of anything else. That Awareness, that Conscious Enjoyment, that Self-Existing and Self-Radiant Space of Infinitely and inherently Free Being, that Shine of inherent Joy Standing in the heart and Expanding from the heart, is the "Bright".And It is the entire Source of True Humor. It is Reality. It is not separate from anything". Adi Da SamrajIt is obvious, from all sorts of subtle details, that he knows what IT s all about . . . a rare being. ALAN WATTS, author, The Way of Zen and The Wisdom of Insecurity;I regard Adi Da Samraj as one of the greatest teachers in the Western world today. IRINA TWEEDIE, Sufi teacher; author, Chasm of FireAdi Da Samraj is a man who has truly walked in Spirit and given true enlightenment to many. SUN BEAR, founder, the Bear Tribe Medicine SocietyA great teacher with the dynamic ability to awaken in his listeners something of the Divine Reality in which he is grounded, with which he is identified, and which, in fact, he is. This is one of many editions of the spiritual autobiography of the unique American mystic
Adi Da. The first edition was 1972 and new editions with more material and much advertising about the group continue to appear. I also got the latest one(2004) which was about 3 times the size and weight but the hundreds of pages of new material was more of the opaque prose and advertising. So, I recommend one of the earlier paperpack editions like this one.
The sticker on the cover says `The most profound spiritual autobiography of all time` and this might well be true. I am in my 60's and have read thousands of books and this if one of the great ones. Certainly it is by far the fullest and clearest account of enlightenment I have ever seen. Even if you have no interest at all in the most fascinating of all human psychological processes, it is an amazing document that reveals a great deal about religion, yoga, and human psychology and probes the depths and limits of human possibilities.
As I have read and experienced alot in various religious traditions, I naturally compare his writings with those of others, particularly with the great Indian mystic Osho. Though they clearly agree on the major points of how to prodceed on the path, letting go of the attachment to the spiritual quest etc. their styles are vastly different. Both are highly intelligent and well read(Osho could speed read and read over 100,000 books) and were at home in the spiritual literature of the major religious traditions. However, most of Da's books are essentially unreadable as he struggles to express in language the ineffable realms of the enlightened mind. Even in this, by far his most readable book, he often veers off into pages of opacity as he tries to explain the unexplainable. Osho by contrast is the clearest, most jargon free expositor of the spiritual life who has ever lived. He wrote very little and nearly all of his more than 200 books are transcriptions of spontaneous talks he gave-- with no notes or preparation. They are nonetheless unexcelled masterpieces of spiritual literature. His amazing àutobiography`(actually compiled after his death) has been published by St. Martins by the full version is available online at www.oshoworld.com and other places. Unfortunately, he has very little to say about the exact details of his spiritual progress.
Most of Osho's talks were videotaped and are available on tape and DVD. As Da lives most of the time in seclusion on an island in Fiji it is not easy to get to hear him but the Dawn Horse Press sells a few videotapes on their web page. Da is not a very engaging or facile speaker, unlike Osho who is by turns amusing, shattering and hypnotic. But, as both of them understand, it's what the master is and not he says that is important.
Both of them were utterly honest and uncompromising in their life and teachings and Da omits nothing of relevance, including his youthful adventures with sex and drugs as well as his exposure to LSD, psilocybin and mescaline as a volunteer in government experiments. However, as with many or perhaps all of those destined to become enlightened, he was different from birth and experienced the Shakti energy (which he calls the Bright) from childhood. And, when he entered college, he said his primary interest was to discover what living beings are and what is living consciousness. Clearly not your typical freshman.
A major problem in describing advanced spiritual states is that no criteria or language for them exists in common discourse so mystics have to try to bend language in mostly vain attempts to capture their experiences. It is far worse than trying to describe seeing to a congenitally blind person since they at least have the cognitive structures and experience of the world. But mystics are quite rare and most of them have left little or no description of their mental states.
Unlike Osho, who rejected miracles, paranormal phenomena and all the other nonsense that commonly accompanies religion, Da seems to lack any science background at all and embraces precognition(p120), reincarnation(p555),`meditating` other persons, living on air(p287) etc., and regards the phenomena that I would say are happening in his brain as being `out there`. From comments included in newer editions it is clear that many of his disciples believe he can perform miracles like stopping a raging forest fire at their California retreat. Nevertheless, most of the time he is amazingly levelheaded, going thru over a decade of stress and psychic terrors that would drive most from the spiritual path. Millions of years of evolution have solidified the ego and it does not leave peacefully.
Interwoven with the spellbinding account of his spiritual progress are the details of the minds interaction with the body described in the East in terms of various forms of Yoga(eg., p95-9, 214-21, 249,281-3, 439-40). These few pages are worth more than a whole shelf of yoga books if you want to get to the heart of the mind/body relation in spirituality.
Unlike most who have become enlightened, he had a thorough grounding in Christian practice and made a major effort to become a protestant and then Greek Orthodox minister. Even years later, after he was far along the path with Muktananda, he had an amazing and totally unexpected series of visitations from Mary and Jesus that went on for weeks(p 301-3 et seq.).
Regarding drugs, as is nearly universal among spiritual teachers, he notes that although they may remove certain barriers at times, they do not provide a shortcut to understanding. However, nearly everyone is now aware that they put many on the path to higher consciousness.
He describes in detail the many stages in his ego death or self realization(eg, p72-4, 198-200, 219,20, 238-9, 245, 249, 258-9, 281, 355-65, 368-72, 406). Along the way, he realized the ultimate disutility of all practices and all traditions(337-9) including yoga(281-3) which are all attached to seeking and goals, ultimately winding up in the present. He discovered, as have many others, that seeking and meditation became obstacles and gave them up for devotion to his guru Muktananda(p420-22). His detailed accounts of his interactions with the famous Swami Muktananda and his ultimate realization of his limitations are of rare insight and honesty.
He constantly encounters his attachment to his ego(Narcissus-- eg, p108-110) and asks himself--`Avoiding Relationship?` by which he seems to mean avoiding the divine or ego death with spiritual seeking.
After enlightenment he teaches the 'only by me revealed and given Way of the heart`, finding all other paths to be `remedial` and 'egoic' and merely pursuing God or reality(p359 +) but after a careful reading of this and several other books I never got any idea what that way consists in. Undoubtedly being in his presence helps alot but in other places he has complained about the fact that his disciples just won't let it happen and one wonders if even one has been able to follow him. Of course the same considerations apply to all traditions and teachers and though some of Osho's friends(he disavowed the master/disciple relationship) have claimed enlightenment, nobody of his status has emerged. It looks like you have to have the right genes and the right environment and a very advanced and preferably enlightened guru to stimulate you. The world desperately needs higher consciousness and I hope that someone comes up with an easier way very soon.
