This is a book that invites you to reexamine not only what you think of every day devices and things like cell phones, personal computers, computer games and implanted defibrillators; it asks you reexamine how you think about them and why.
The approach is interesting in that uses ethnography, memoir and clinical cases in the form of essays written by individuals who've interacted with and, in some cases treated people who established relationships with devices most of us would never consider and not be able to see, even if we were to interact with those described in the essays.
One I found particularly thought provoking is entitled: The Internal Cardiac Defibrillator
An internal cardiac defibrillator is a device implanted in your chest and connected by wires to your heart. It constantly monitors your heartbeat and if your heart goes into cardiac fibrillation, which is life threatening, the device shocks you, much the same as depicted in scenes on medical shows like ER. But, instead of a doctor or EMT placing paddles on your chest, yelling "Clear" and pushing the button to shock you it happens automatically, inside your chest. The ICD shocks you and, when it does, the experience is as painful and traumatic as when it's done with paddles.
It's impossible to understand what it means to have an ICD implanted in your chest without talking to people who do have one. Here's an example:
"I died and then..." "This is the peculiar grammar of stories told by people with ICDs. The internal firing of the ICD is painful and brings one back from death, a repeated boundary crossing that writes a new narrative of life and death."
On one level, having an ICD is comforting because it's there, just in case you need it to save your life. But, there's also a dark side.
"My independence was gone. And yet, they say that this thing gives you more independence. Because you can be assured that you won't go into cardiac arrest and die when you take a trip and all that. My thing is, we take a trip, and I'm wondering, okay, I wonder which one of these exits is a hospital. Or, you know, something like that."
Darker still is the story of Stan who is forty-two and received an ICD when he passed out while running.
When he thinks back to that event, he realizes if he had died it would have been an easy death. "Like blacking out on the road, dying like that would be nothing. There would no pain whatsoever..."
Now that particular option is gone. Should he go into cardiac arrest the ICD will shock him back to life. On one occasion he received multiple shocks while swimming. He felt a funny feeling in his chest that made him stop. "And all of a sudden, wham, I got shocked--damn, I gotta get out of the pool." He was shocked about three times.
After the incident Stan asked his doctor how many times the ICD would shock him before it "would stop trying."
About nine times his doctor told him.
That kind of information is comforting, troubling and frightening, all at the same time.
Examples of other things explored in this book are a prosthetic eye, computer games, a dialysis machine and video poker.
I found this book to be like a bag of potato chips. Once you've read one essay you'll find it difficult to stop until you've read all of them.

God Speaks ReviewI first read this wonderful book in 1970, when the soil of my life, the ground of my being, had been torn apart by the tempests and storms of growing up in the 1960's, and I had developed an eager and insatiable, even desperate thirst to find out what is my purpose in life, what am I doing here, who am I....
"God Speaks" provided an answer and planted a seed that has developed into a mighty tree whose beautiful and radiant branches have spread lovingly over the entire landscape of my life, even while revealing in contrast ever more clearly the beauty and wonder of the infinite sky beyond. In its last chapter, this book says that the Truth about God and Creation and Reality is still far beyond what can be put into words, but the words of this book at the time not only satisfied my mind about all the questions of why and wherefrom and whereto -- a mind that had eagerly absorbed all the science and math and art and psychology and philosophy it could handle and still came up hungry and thirsty -- but it also seemed to answer questions welling up from deep within that I could not yet even formulate.
The first words of Chapter One still ring in my heart: "All souls (atmas) were, are and will be in the Over-Soul (Paramatma). Souls (atmas) are all One. ..."
This book is really a mighty poem about the evolution of consciousness of the soul, through earthly forms of stone, metal, vegetable, worm, fish, bird, animal, and human being, and then through numerous lifetimes of every sort of experience -- of being man and woman, rich and poor, happy and miserable, good and bad -- until the soul's consciousness turns inward and it begins to experience stages and worlds of increasing unity of sensation and perception ... until it finally comes face to face with God the Beloved, and after gazing at the Beloved for an eternity of love and longing ... finally becomes one with the Beloved, and realizes Who, in Reality, it has always been.

"The loving of God and the longing for His union," says Meher Baba "is fully demonstrated in the sixth plane of consciousness."The seventh plane marks true and lasting freedom. Impressions go. Duality goes. The drops burst and again become the Ocean. God answers his question of "Who am I?" with "I am God." The Infinite has returned to the original starting point. He now knows, however, with full consciousness and full awareness that he was, is and always will be infinite. And he realizes that the entire journey has been an illusory dream, the purpose of which is the full awakening of his soul.Yet the saga is not necessarily over. Meher Baba indicates that even among God-realized souls responsibilities within Creation may differ. Most play no further active part in Creation. But a rare few make the journey back to human consciousness. Of these, five become Perfect Masters, blending divine consciousness with awareness of all beings in evolution, reincarnation and involution. These five administer the affairs of the universe. And they use their "infinite knowledge, power and bliss for the progressive emancipation of all in the field of illusion."Meher Baba differentiates these Perfect Masters, who are always on earth, from the Avatar, who is the "that highest status of God, where God directly becomes man and lives on earth as God-man." He further comments that the "Avatar is always One and the same, the eternal, indivisible, infinite One who manifests Himself in the form of man as the Avatar, as the Messiah, as the Prophet, as the Buddha, as the Ancient Onethe Highest of the High."A little over a year before the first publication of God Speaks, Meher Baba officially declared himself to be that Avatara claim that amplifies the meaning of the title. Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love ReviewMessages from Jesus is written by a woman I personally know -- a healer who has been able to see and converse with Jesus since childhood. Despite her reticence about the name, Saint Ta, Jesus told her to use it (see Chapter One). He said she was to write books of spiritual truth for others, sharing her experiences and His words of hope for humanity.
Throughout the book, Jesus reminds us that "God is a loving God" and that the Old Testament conception of a vengeful, punishing God is erroneous. Many Christians and Jews today are moving away from the belief that God is judgmental and vengeful. It is always disturbing to have one's beliefs challenged, but Jesus wants us to realize that God is a God of love and mercy, not of condemnation and punishment. He makes it clear throughout the book that we, not God, are the ones who judge each other and ourselves, and delve out punishment.
Jesus discusses life and death, in response to Saint Ta's question about those who have or perform abortions. He says: "Life is precious, before war and after war. Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war? Within your dualistic world, you perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as you perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Therefore, I simply ask that whatever you do, do it with love." (p. 265) Jesus is making the point that, just as many believe war is justified in certain circumstances, so also many believe abortion is justified in certain circumstances. He began His response to Saint Ta's question by telling us "There are many individual situations that warrant or censure abortion." He also states that the issues are complicated and unfathomable from our human perspective, the soul cannot die, and "It is not for me nor you to judge." Therefore, He simply asks: "whatever you do, do it with love."
Jesus does not take sides for or against war or abortion. When he says, "Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war?", Jesus is not suggesting that we should or should not condemn these leaders; He is simply pointing out that, in fact, many of us do not condemn them. He is showing us that, within our dualistic world, many perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as many perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Just as many do not condemn those who send our youth to die in war, so also many do not condemn those who perform abortions. Jesus' words often have to be carefully read and contemplated in order to comprehend His meaning.
At the beginning of the chapter "War", Jesus says, "Thou shalt not kill. War, among other things, is cause and effect, resulting from and in karmic debt. Karmic experiences are destined to happen over and over, unless the chains of karma are broken and love reigns. The commandment, `Thou shalt not kill,' along with love, nonviolence and forgiveness, would rid the earth of this karma, and worldwide peace would be maintained for generations to come." (p. 105) Throughout the book, we are reminded not to think of one kind of person as better or worse than another. By not judging and condemning others, by forgiveness, and by living in love, we unlock the door to spiritual awareness and find heaven on earth.
On page 99, Saint Ta talks about the life in plants, as well as in animals, and mentions that some people think we shouldn't eat animals. Jesus says, "People are unique and from many nationalities, each originally created for and born in their own environment. Now that you can travel from one area to another and live in areas far from your origins, you may not be receiving what you need from your new environment. Seriously think about the food source from the area where you were born and the genealogy of your family. It was the vibration of that area that penetrated into your consciousness....It is the shared vibration with others within that area that draws them back. The best foods for you are grown in and of the environment of your origin." It is important to know that our genetic inheritance and the vibration of the area we were born in determine which foods are best for us.
Messages from Jesus is full of advice for our times, as well as timeless teachings and truths for all of us to live by. Jesus discusses the environment, terrorism, love, oneness, reincarnation, and many other important matters that concern us all. The author has performed a great service by recording Jesus' words and sharing her experiences with the Master.

The Essential Aurobindo: Writings of Sri Aurobindo ReviewIn his numerous and enlightening writings, Sri Aurobindo presents one of the most significant metaphysical interpretations concerning the nature of existence, as well as the purpose of matter, life, mind, and spirit. For Aurobindo, existence unfolds by a perpetuating and inevitable evolution towards the complete fulfillment of spirit and soul, whereby the mind of man is an intermediate step by which the all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-present bliss that is the universe can eventually recognize itself in spirit.
Aurobindo has a particularly fascinating elucidation on the process of natural evolution. In his estimation, evolution is the instrument by which the infinite oneness (Aurobindo uses many terms - though in vain - to capture what he admits is ineffable) unveils itself. In this sense, the process by which matter became life, life became animals, and animals became man, was a natural process not aimless but inevitable. For if matter manifested life, matter (or the material reality) must have inherently involved life even before its fruition. In this sense, life, mind, and the future states of the supramental and spiritual revelation are not spontaneously created by a blind universe, but instead are consciously liberated over time. In his words matter and life, mind and spirit, are not created anew but are already existent - but merely manifested by the Spirit in a process of "bringing out of what already existed in suppressed fact or in eternal potentiality." (72) There is purpose and direction.
Evolution gradually advances the material reality into recognition of its spiritual bliss, and only by the evolution up to, through, and past the human mind (well, theoretically any 'mental' organism/being will do) will this recognition exist. Accordingly, our lives are fraught with meaning and purpose. Our purpose is to recognize the all-blissful spirit that IS 'us' and 'everything', by advancing our consciousness past (but not by denying entirely) vital and mental concerns towards the spiritual realm. Hence we will facilitate the continual process of evolution towards the descent of the 'supramental' - the stage 'above mind' by which man and the universe can wax ever more conscious of the ineffable bliss and spirit that constitutes "being". Man IS special indeed - Aurobindo even designates him as the Spirit's "highest vehicle" for evolution to date. Having said that, he is merely an instrument of the divine spirit, and he is not more or less important than, nor more and less separate from any other component or material force that precedes and follows his existence. Thus he should not regard his special place as an invitation towards egoism and pride, for he and his mind had always existed and will always exist in 'eternal potentiality,' and his place is hence shared with all, while all shares its omnipresent place with him.
Before reading Aurobindo, I had really only been familiar with University professors and western philosophers. According to the conventional thoughts of this milieu - perhaps best encapsulated in Camus' "Myth of Sisyphus" - existence in the material is not only temporary but also meaningless. Body and mind are but interchangeable and mundane forms of matter, and 'conceiving' the soul is an action of a schizophrenic mind creating an imaginary friend of sorts to console the restlessness of his purposeless existence. Aurobindo's words, however, seek to "thin the wall between soul and matter." (195)
Some eastern belief systems posit reality that isn't much more cheerful - including the Buddhist conception (depending on how one interprets it) that existence in the material realm may be eternal and one may indeed have a soul, but it still lacks purpose in that it is subjected to a perpetual and unwilling participation in an endless cycle of natural processes. While rebirth is hypothetically preferable to a one-shot deal, existence is still meaningless - and therefore the goal is to escape the cycle in itself (Nirvana). From these beliefs and others, Aurobindo provides an alternative answer.
While Aurobindo subscribes to a monistic conceptualization of being, he posits a refined variation on this interpretation. In evaluating the idea of resurrection of the soul in his essay "Philosophy of Rebirth," Aurobindo claims that conventional monisms - e.g. Vedantics and Upanishads - contend the universe is one, and that matter ebbs and flows from this oneness like waves from the sea. But as Aurobindo astutely points out, if this is the case, rebirth of the soul is either temporary, illusory, or unnecessary. There is no reason for it. Why is there matter at all, why can't the eternal oneness just be in itself? Why is there manifestation of its reality at all? The sea does not need waves.
This is where Aurobindo demarcates his spiritual belief about Nature and Spirit most compellingly. Unlike the Vedantics or Buddhists who exalt the spiritual realm while subsequently derogating the material realm that often obscures it, Aurobindo argues that these two domains are one and the same - inevitably interdependent for manifestation and consciousness - hence Integral Yoga. The sea NEEDS waves. The material world is the infinite divine manifesting itself in a perpetual process of unfolding its blissful being, and it strives for consciousness of itself through evolution from matter to life to mind to supramental to ubiquitous consciousness of the SPIRIT. It can not do so in infinity - it trips over its own legs in the endlessness of space and time. Hence it concentrates spirit in the finite of matter, life, mind, and supermind/spirit.
These are some of the many fascinating ideas that Aurobindo introduces in his many essays. He presents many valuable insights on the role of religion in its interpretation of Spirit, as well as the dichotomy of the material world / spiritual world (a dichotomy Aurobindo insists is inaccurate) and how western and eastern thought treat this traditional opposition. Perhaps his most impressive quality is his profound and complete understanding of interpretations other than his own, educed by his discussion on western and eastern philosophical and religious traditions.
While Aurobindo's ideas in themselves are captivating, his articulation of those ideas are equally impressive. As his second (some might even argue his third) language, his command of English and mastery of lingual exposition matches that of Conrad. An exquisite writer, he articulates his sophisticated metaphysics with elegant prose and quite coherent explication. Quite simply, he is an exquisite writer and an absolutely brilliant thinker. I highly recommend this book. I have found it to be the most rewarding collection of words to explain to me the nature of the universe and my place in it as a human.

Bhagavad Gita: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Illuminations) ReviewIn my experience Kendra Crossen Burroughs is one of the best editors in the field of Eastern spiritual literature and texts. As well as working freelance, she has been a long-term editor on the staff of Shambhala Publications, and I was happy to have her involved in a book that I had published by Shambhala, although not a book in Eastern thought.
I was very excited when I heard that Kendra was doing this book for Skylight Paths, since the Gita has been one of my, and many other people's favorite and most important spiritual sources, and I eagerly looked forward to its appearance. If I wasn't one of the first people in the world to buy a copy, at least I was one of the first on my block.
I was not disappointed. If I was, I would have never written this review. A blurb on the cover by renowned authority, Ken Wilber, says, "The very best Gita for first time readers." This is one of the rare occasions when a blurb is absolutely true. But, the further truth is that Burroughs's annotations make this a book for the experienced reader of the Gita as well. Burroughs has consulted and used over twenty other translations in her annotations to this particular translation that she uses, the 1935 one by Shri Purohit Swami, and this scholarship, plus Burroughs' own personal experience, make this a valuable book for a reader of any degree of experience.
Besides Burroughs' own brilliant annotations, Skylight has done an innovative and equally brilliant job of format, where the annotations are on one page, and the reference text is on the facing page, so that the reader has the annotations right at hand as s/he reads, and does not have to thumb through to the back of the book or chapter to look them up. The only problem that I encountered with this was my own idiosyncratic one of whether to read the text page through and then turn to the annotations alongside it, or read each annotation as it is referred to in the text. I never completely settled this for myself. Other readers may want to read the annotation page first, and then read the facing page of the Gita text.
As Burroughs notes, the Purohit translation is a good first time one, because he purposely set out to eliminate all foreign words of the Indian Sanskrit language, and uses only terms familiar to the Western, English speaking reader. For myself, however, who is not a newcomer to Eastern thought (though certainly not a Gita scholar at all), I am less happy with this choice. I want to know what the key Sanskrit terms are in the Gita text, which have a meaning and connotation that is at least somewhat different than the familiar English terms used. For example, in the famous and central verses (Ch 4: 7-8) where Krishna tells his disciple Arjuna about who he is and the reason for his periodic appearance in human history, the Purohit text has it, "To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked, and to establish the kingdom of God, I am reborn from age to age." The very Christian phrase "the kingdom of God," could easily throw off the reader. The Sanskrit actually says, "for the establishment of dharma," and thus it connects with the whole Indian sense of truth and untruth (dharma and adharma), more abstract and general, and later carried with such powerful effect into Buddhism. In 1935 "the Kingdom of God" might have worked better, but in our time, dharma says more, and more accurately to many of us. However, Burroughs' annotations corrects or overcomes a lot of these problems (but not in this case). So, where the Purohit text says (Ch 6: 23) that meditation "should be practiced with determination and with a heart which refuses to be depressed," Burroughs explains that the actual Sanskrit term is "chetas, a synonym for chitta (mind). In Indian philosophy , 'heart' is considered an aspect of mind, concerned with intuitive understanding and valuation." Gems like this of elucidation and clarification occur throughout the annotation pages facing the text.
What reading this edition of the Gita has prompted me to do, in part related to my issue with the Purohit translation, is to now have three Gita's that I carry side by side, and compare them as I read in it--this one, Prabhavananda/Isherwood, and Nikhilananda's. Burroughs would be happy with this effect on me of her edition, and in this case would consider her work a success. Something that you saw in it made you question, if even for a moment, the nature of reality as you have always understood it. And if you're willing to entertain that tantalizing 'splinter in your mind' awhile longer, you need to read this book.
All of the essays in this book are thought-provoking and well written, with authors ranging from prominent members of the science fiction community, to theologians, to computer scientists. All have been similarly affected by this truly remarkable movie, and all take you on their own personal tour of The Wachowski's mindbending dystopia.
Essay content ranges from comparisons of Neo with Christ and Buddha, to whether we are in fact living inside a simulated world. The two finest essays in this book (in my opinion) are by techologists themselves, one by Ray Kurzweil and another by Sun Microsystems' Bill Joy, each with a very in-depth examination of the technology behind The matrix, albeit with two very different visions of humanity's future once our technology catches up with that depicted in the movie.
If The Matrix made you question the nature of the world around you, even a little, you need to read this book. The matters of Western versus Eastern religion, of exoteric versus esoteric religion, of believe versus Realization, of the process of growing beyond superficial understanding into depth, all of this is deeply probed and sanely considered. And wisdom is the intrinsic communication here, the wisdom of the unitive depth-heart undertanding of religion itself, as a process, a universal process of Reality Realization.
In order to help clarify the difference between the various proposals about "God", Adi Da Samraj uses the term Real (Acausal) God as a means to help readers understand directly the egoless nature of Real God versus the ego-based ideas about "God" that can be used for ego based separative purpose, individually or in collective patterns. Over twelve million people are now playing World of Warcraft, and another couple hundred thousand play Everquest2 and other similar games. All those wanderers of Azeroth, Norrath, and other decadent fantasy realms can now apply their arcane knowledge and MMOG experience to the equally arcane realm of Philosophy. This book features a great group of authors (both philosophers and gamers) and an equally impressive selection of articles that span the range of ethics to epistemology. Mayhem meets Metaphysics. Political philosophy is introduced through guild leadership insights. And it all goes down easily because this strange juxtaposition is leavened by a steady flow of humor. Interesting and quirky references abound, from Plato and his metaphorical cave to Adam Smith's description of the economics of cyberspace. Even Nietzsche makes a super appearance.

Monica Evans introduces us to the lore of World of Warcraft, discussing misdeeds and other noteworthy misadventures. Plato and Kant are introduced innocently and unobtrusively, yet I could feel the gentle increase of my intellect by at least +2!
Another highlight is Miquel Sicart's Warrior angst and consequent in-depth philosophical discussion of game play, game community, and game ethics. Again, I felt a nice increase in INT +2!
You could even call it a sexy read, as the ethical implications of flirting and role play are explored in the most unlikely places. OMG! I just got a boost in charisma +1!
This book makes the game itself more fun. After settling in to read for a bit, I rejoined my guild and found myself considering many things I hadn't previously pondered. Is the rogue really female and does it matter? How much real money is that epic loot worth? Does the game play affect our real personas? What linguistic influences will carry over into RL? What's the etymological root for noob? Tank? Or griefer? How long before folks are going to the doctor to report that their health bar is low?

A true delight for the thoughtful gamer! Belongs in a spot on the book shelf between Plato's Republic and Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash.

The Book of Light: The Nature of God, the Structure of Consciousness, and the Universe Within You ReviewBe warned, the cover illustration and title are very seductive.. Don't waste your money. This is vanity press at its worst. I was excited to read the reviews here on Amazon and bought this on the strength of them. I have been exploring the A Course in Miracles/Story Waters path for several years and was eager to find the next step. Unfortunately this is mammoth leap in reverse.
Contrary to what you will read here Dr Sharp is an embarrassingly bad author, actually, he is merely a man with a PC. The Book of Light reads like a verbose and self satisfied e-mail from someone who delludedly believes they're funny - complete with smiley faces and annecdotal 'amusing' and totally irrelevant asides "You may, if you wish, scrunch up your eyebrows..."
His writing is not literate or informative and his message is absurd. Rather than it pursuing the essential purity of the unity it builds a ridiculous mythology filled with irrelevant equasions and sequences to give it a history and fill space. He even answers his own questions inadequately, let alone mine. When talking us through one of his pointless numerical processes that supposedly took place at 'the creation' he asks: "why 12 and not another number? Well, for no other reason than twelve seemed a good idea at the time." Surely a statement like this renders further pursuit of any particular equasion meaningless, but Sharp continues for a chapter or two regardless.
This book includes a lot of white paper with clip art, first person quips and convoluted formulae replacing paragraphs of text. The prose is amateur, unedited and therefore infuriatingly rambling. The Book of Light - if edited by a professional could be reduced to a 10 page pamphlet that would take up less space in the landfill. Most revealing of Sharp's motivation is his choice to omit information essential to his theory. (despite the white space available on the page, and though editing) Instead Sharp tells us which of his other books to run and buy if we want to know.
If you have ever sensed the unity for yourself, if you know it's real and that this reality is anything but real this book is an insult to your intelligence. It creates formulae and ritual where there is nothing but 'God' as a pure and simple force, it fabricates plodding numeric sequences where there is nothing but one ariel love. On the other hand, if you enjoy unicorn T-shirts, crystals, incense and telling people at parties that you're a witch this may be what you're looking for... however, I make no promises
When it comes to Dr Sharp I have learned my lesson well. The exploitative, unprofessional drivel I found between these covers broke through any serenity I had managed to achieve and managed to piss me off! No small feat these days... I'm still trying to work out why my higher self put this nonsense into my reality - perhaps so that I will look inward rather than outward for the answers, no one is better qualified than me/you to see the light, definitely not Dr Sharp.The Book of Light: The Nature of God, the Structure of Consciousness, and the Universe Within You OverviewWhen you are ready to remove your chains... The Book of Light is a spiritual tour-de-force that will take you on a journey of enlightenment and empowerment like no other. The Book of Light is a gift of total freedom from the bondage of the veil. The Book of Light will help you place yourself in proper perspective not as a descended ape or fallen angel but as the glorious, light filled spark of divine creator conscious that you are.
