Hinduism - An Introduction ReviewThis book gives one a brief but comprehensive overview of Hinduism. The work is a brief, 84 pages; but even so the information is presented extremely well. There are numerous pictures and illustrations that supplement the text.
My knowledge of Hinduism was mainly from reading books by Western authors. This book gives one a Hindu perspective. Although I was born in India I did not realize how scant my knowledge of Hinduism was. I verily suspect that many Hindus will find a nugget or two in this book.
The book format is more akin to the coffee table genere but this is one of those display books that is actually quite useful.
I do have a cavil. There is no index to speak of; so if you recall a name finding it in the book is quite a chore. However, all in all this is a bargain.
If you, like myself, just want to know the basics of Hinduism and Hindu culture, this is a great start.Hinduism - An Introduction OverviewHinduism is the oldest living religion in the world and is unique in its tolerance of other religions. Yet, because of its free thinking and lack of compulsion, educated Hindus of today know very little of their own religion and there is great need for a simple but comprehensive book on the subject.

The Wisdom of Sri Chinmoy Review"The Wisdom of Sri Chinmoy" is perhaps the most concisely organized text of modern spirituality available. Compiled expertly, the book is an anthology drawn from the writings of this remarkable teacher of peace numbering over 1000.
The book is arranged as an encyclopedia, with topics such as Love, Self-Realization and more common topics such as Death, Worries and Problems. Each topic consists of questions answered by Sri Chinmoy. The strength of the books lies not in its format, however, but in its content.
Sri Chinmoy's answers are so simple, yet powerful. They offer a rare glimpse into the wisdom of an enlightened person, a wisdom which resonates with clarity and brilliance but is at the same time quite practical and applicable.
Any seeker of peace can benefit tremendously from this book which offers insights into the spiritual life and the life beyond problems and worries that few texts offer.
A must for anyone interested in achieving a bit more tranquility, balance and happiness in life. The Wisdom of Sri Chinmoy Overview

Cosmic Ascension: Your Cosmic Map Home (The Easy-To-Read Encyclopedia of the Spiritual Path, Vol.6) ReviewThis book is indeed your Cosmic Map Home. Even if you are not yet ready for Cosmic Ascension, it's fun to look ahead and see what's down the road for you. If you are serious about ascension and enjoy Dr. Stone's other books, you'll love this one too. I use the word "serious" with a smile, because when I got serious about ascension, I found out that it is more like fun than work. If you haven't read his *Encyclopedia of the Spiritual Path*, I recommend starting with "The Complete Ascension Manual: How to Achieve Ascension in This Lifetime" and "Soul Psychology." Once I got involved in the ascension process, I could not wait to read "Beyond Ascension" and "Cosmic Ascension," and each was encouraging and exciting. I now know what I have to look forward to.
If you are not familiar with Dr. Stone's work, you might be pleasantly surprised, as I was, that he seems like such a down-to-earth nice guy for someone with such a treasure trove of otherworldly wisdom to offer. All of this information was strange and foreign territory for me, but he presents it in a practical and accessible way. What a great "travel agent" the Universe has given us for our spiritual journey! This is a solitary road for some of us, but with Dr. Stone's introductions to the Ascended Masters, Angels and other Cosmic beings, it doesn't feel so lonely. If you work your way through his Encyclopedia and follow his techniques, you'll be too busy to be lonely :)Cosmic Ascension: Your Cosmic Map Home (The Easy-To-Read Encyclopedia of the Spiritual Path, Vol.6) OverviewBecause of the extraordinary times in which we live, there is a new potentiality to begin one's cosmic ascension process, differentiated from planetary ascension. After completing planetary ascension, we are no more than one-tenth of the way up a ten-inch ruler in terms of our cosmic ascension process.

The Road to Harmony Day By Day ReviewThis daily meditation book is the very best I've come across! It is written in a very life-supporting, inspirational manner that goes deep to the heart of any person, regardless of 'religious' affiliation.
Each day's mediation concludes with a 'statement' that you repeat 3 times and then basically give thanks for Divine Light. I personally, find it very effective to say the meditation out loud, since the power of the spoken word is so healing.
On the days that I miss out on my meditation, I really feel the difference in my overall 'vibaration.' The words written are so profound, so powerful that the shift in my consciousness is quite palpable.
Kudos to the author, Kay Eileen Meyer, who is truly gifted in her writing style. I highly recommend this book!

Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love ReviewMessages from Jesus is written by a woman I personally know -- a healer who has been able to see and converse with Jesus since childhood. Despite her reticence about the name, Saint Ta, Jesus told her to use it (see Chapter One). He said she was to write books of spiritual truth for others, sharing her experiences and His words of hope for humanity.
Throughout the book, Jesus reminds us that "God is a loving God" and that the Old Testament conception of a vengeful, punishing God is erroneous. Many Christians and Jews today are moving away from the belief that God is judgmental and vengeful. It is always disturbing to have one's beliefs challenged, but Jesus wants us to realize that God is a God of love and mercy, not of condemnation and punishment. He makes it clear throughout the book that we, not God, are the ones who judge each other and ourselves, and delve out punishment.
Jesus discusses life and death, in response to Saint Ta's question about those who have or perform abortions. He says: "Life is precious, before war and after war. Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war? Within your dualistic world, you perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as you perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Therefore, I simply ask that whatever you do, do it with love." (p. 265) Jesus is making the point that, just as many believe war is justified in certain circumstances, so also many believe abortion is justified in certain circumstances. He began His response to Saint Ta's question by telling us "There are many individual situations that warrant or censure abortion." He also states that the issues are complicated and unfathomable from our human perspective, the soul cannot die, and "It is not for me nor you to judge." Therefore, He simply asks: "whatever you do, do it with love."
Jesus does not take sides for or against war or abortion. When he says, "Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war?", Jesus is not suggesting that we should or should not condemn these leaders; He is simply pointing out that, in fact, many of us do not condemn them. He is showing us that, within our dualistic world, many perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as many perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Just as many do not condemn those who send our youth to die in war, so also many do not condemn those who perform abortions. Jesus' words often have to be carefully read and contemplated in order to comprehend His meaning.
At the beginning of the chapter "War", Jesus says, "Thou shalt not kill. War, among other things, is cause and effect, resulting from and in karmic debt. Karmic experiences are destined to happen over and over, unless the chains of karma are broken and love reigns. The commandment, `Thou shalt not kill,' along with love, nonviolence and forgiveness, would rid the earth of this karma, and worldwide peace would be maintained for generations to come." (p. 105) Throughout the book, we are reminded not to think of one kind of person as better or worse than another. By not judging and condemning others, by forgiveness, and by living in love, we unlock the door to spiritual awareness and find heaven on earth.
On page 99, Saint Ta talks about the life in plants, as well as in animals, and mentions that some people think we shouldn't eat animals. Jesus says, "People are unique and from many nationalities, each originally created for and born in their own environment. Now that you can travel from one area to another and live in areas far from your origins, you may not be receiving what you need from your new environment. Seriously think about the food source from the area where you were born and the genealogy of your family. It was the vibration of that area that penetrated into your consciousness....It is the shared vibration with others within that area that draws them back. The best foods for you are grown in and of the environment of your origin." It is important to know that our genetic inheritance and the vibration of the area we were born in determine which foods are best for us.
Messages from Jesus is full of advice for our times, as well as timeless teachings and truths for all of us to live by. Jesus discusses the environment, terrorism, love, oneness, reincarnation, and many other important matters that concern us all. The author has performed a great service by recording Jesus' words and sharing her experiences with the Master.
Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love OverviewMessages from Jesus A Dialogue of Love"Imagine listening to an interview of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of us would be sitting there just praying that the host would delve into the issues that are near and dear to us. In her book, Messages from Jesus - A Dialogue of Love, Mary Ann Johnston shares with the world hours of conversation she had with the One known as The Christ."Chances are, if you have a question for Him, the answer lies in these pages, as the essence of the spiritual life, modern religion, world affairs, and disasters are all dealt with rather comprehensively."Nothing that I or the author could say will convince anyone skeptical of these pages' origin about their authenticity. But then again, only personal conviction will allow any scripture to be thought of as veritable. I encourage you to delve into this work and find out for yourself if Truth is present here. My guess is, regardless of what you determine, you won't skip a page."- Fred Stella, President, Interfaith Dialogue Association and Host of Common Threads: An Interfaith Dialogue, heard weekly on WGVU Radio, Grand Rapids, Michigan

God's Favorite Prayers ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning from God's Favorite Prayers. Rabbi Zahavy shares his unique and fascinating perspective developed from years of study and immersion in our prayers. These insights into the types of personalities that inform our prayers also provide insights into my fellow congregants and myself. I found God's Favorite Prayers to be lively and entertaining yet thought provoking and informative. God's Favorite Prayers will surely be an important source for enriching one's prayer experience.God's Favorite Prayers OverviewThis book invites the reader into the heart of Jewish spirituality, to learn about its idiom and imagery, its emotions and its great sweeping dramas. It invites the reader to meet six ideal personalities of Jewish prayer and to get to know some of God's favorite prayers. What others are saying about God's Favorite Prayers: "God's favorite prayers have all been right in plain sight for centuries, though never before experienced like this. With his characteristic blend of chutzpah and humor, Professor Rav Zahavy makes finding spiritual experiences into a real page turner! A fun, fascinating and totally refreshing way to finally learn how to pray."--Dr. Arlene Rossen Cardozo, author of Sequencing, Woman at Home and Jewish Family Celebrations"Tzvee Zahavy's artful melding of memoir, analysis, and typology enriches our understanding of liturgical experience and encourages us to emulate him by reflecting more thoughtfully on our own prayer lives."--Rabbi Eliezer Diamond Ph.D., Associate Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, Jewish Theological Seminary"... An engaging, humanly sensitive introduction to the types of religious personalities whose views are expressed in the diverse parts of the Siddur and, more generally, in components of Jewish liturgical practices... A fine text for helping students and interested lay people gain an understanding and appreciation of the spiritual viewpoints expressed in Jewish liturgical texts."--Joel Gereboff, Professor of Religious Studies, Arizona State University"It is not often that one has the opportunity to share the authentic personal experiences of a distinguished scholar in the field of liturgy, who is also an award-winning teacher. These two elements stand out in Tzvee Zahavy's God's Favorite Prayers. Zahavy takes us on an amazing journey into the world of Jewish Prayer and into the personalities that make up the 'quorum' in the synagogue. His observations and insights will inspire people of all faiths, who truly seek out a way to make prayer, both personal and communal, a meaningful part of their lives."--Rabbi Shimon Altshul, Director, the Ludwig and Erica Jesselson Institute for Advanced Torah Studies, Bar Ilan University

Bhagavad Gita: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Illuminations) ReviewIn my experience Kendra Crossen Burroughs is one of the best editors in the field of Eastern spiritual literature and texts. As well as working freelance, she has been a long-term editor on the staff of Shambhala Publications, and I was happy to have her involved in a book that I had published by Shambhala, although not a book in Eastern thought.
I was very excited when I heard that Kendra was doing this book for Skylight Paths, since the Gita has been one of my, and many other people's favorite and most important spiritual sources, and I eagerly looked forward to its appearance. If I wasn't one of the first people in the world to buy a copy, at least I was one of the first on my block.
I was not disappointed. If I was, I would have never written this review. A blurb on the cover by renowned authority, Ken Wilber, says, "The very best Gita for first time readers." This is one of the rare occasions when a blurb is absolutely true. But, the further truth is that Burroughs's annotations make this a book for the experienced reader of the Gita as well. Burroughs has consulted and used over twenty other translations in her annotations to this particular translation that she uses, the 1935 one by Shri Purohit Swami, and this scholarship, plus Burroughs' own personal experience, make this a valuable book for a reader of any degree of experience.
Besides Burroughs' own brilliant annotations, Skylight has done an innovative and equally brilliant job of format, where the annotations are on one page, and the reference text is on the facing page, so that the reader has the annotations right at hand as s/he reads, and does not have to thumb through to the back of the book or chapter to look them up. The only problem that I encountered with this was my own idiosyncratic one of whether to read the text page through and then turn to the annotations alongside it, or read each annotation as it is referred to in the text. I never completely settled this for myself. Other readers may want to read the annotation page first, and then read the facing page of the Gita text.
As Burroughs notes, the Purohit translation is a good first time one, because he purposely set out to eliminate all foreign words of the Indian Sanskrit language, and uses only terms familiar to the Western, English speaking reader. For myself, however, who is not a newcomer to Eastern thought (though certainly not a Gita scholar at all), I am less happy with this choice. I want to know what the key Sanskrit terms are in the Gita text, which have a meaning and connotation that is at least somewhat different than the familiar English terms used. For example, in the famous and central verses (Ch 4: 7-8) where Krishna tells his disciple Arjuna about who he is and the reason for his periodic appearance in human history, the Purohit text has it, "To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked, and to establish the kingdom of God, I am reborn from age to age." The very Christian phrase "the kingdom of God," could easily throw off the reader. The Sanskrit actually says, "for the establishment of dharma," and thus it connects with the whole Indian sense of truth and untruth (dharma and adharma), more abstract and general, and later carried with such powerful effect into Buddhism. In 1935 "the Kingdom of God" might have worked better, but in our time, dharma says more, and more accurately to many of us. However, Burroughs' annotations corrects or overcomes a lot of these problems (but not in this case). So, where the Purohit text says (Ch 6: 23) that meditation "should be practiced with determination and with a heart which refuses to be depressed," Burroughs explains that the actual Sanskrit term is "chetas, a synonym for chitta (mind). In Indian philosophy , 'heart' is considered an aspect of mind, concerned with intuitive understanding and valuation." Gems like this of elucidation and clarification occur throughout the annotation pages facing the text.
What reading this edition of the Gita has prompted me to do, in part related to my issue with the Purohit translation, is to now have three Gita's that I carry side by side, and compare them as I read in it--this one, Prabhavananda/Isherwood, and Nikhilananda's. Burroughs would be happy with this effect on me of her edition, and in this case would consider her work a success. And these three, are one more than the two translations of the Bible that I have on hand.Bhagavad Gita: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Illuminations) OverviewAn ancient classic that can become a companion for your own spiritual journey.Millions of people turn daily to India's most beloved holy book, the Bhagavad Gita ("Song of the Lord"), to instruct their spiritual practice. A Hindu classic, it has universal appeal for people of all faith traditions who turn to its inspirational support in the struggles of life, its consolation in times of grief, and its deeply moving promise of God's love and guidance.Composed in Sanskrit verse thousands of years ago, this timeless text tells the story of a distraught warrior on the verge of battle and the compassionate counsel he receives from Krishna-God in human form. In just seven hundred lines, the Gita presents concise teachings on such topics as the immortality of the soul, meditation and yoga, worship and sacrifice, the ideal of selfless action, and the oneness of all life in the Divine. Now you can read and understand the Gita with no previous knowledge of Hinduism required. This SkyLight Illuminations edition offers insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that explains references and philosophical terms; shares the inspiring interpretations of famous spiritual teachers; and addresses questions such as the inner meaning of India's caste system and why this sublime discourse on inner peace is set against the background of a violent civil war.Shri Purohit Swami (1882-1941) was an Indian monk who traveled to the West in 1930 to teach the wisdom of Hinduism. In addition to the Bhagavad Gita, he translated The Ten Principal Upanishads (in collaboration with the poet William Butler Yeats).Kendra Crossen Burroughs is a book editor whose specialty is religions of the East and West. She compiled The Essential Ken Wilber and Entering the Tao: Master Ni's Guidance for Self-Cultivation. A long-time student of the Bhagavad Gita, she lives in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Summer Snow ReviewRebeccasreads highly recommends SUMMER SNOW as a lively adventure story about love in a time of war. It's also, mainly, a deeply religious & spiritual tale describing transcendental meditation, the history of Sufism & insights into who we are, what we're doing & where we're going.
In this time of post-9/11, US Special Forces doing battle with al-Qaeda in faraway places, come now to Kyrgyzstan where Cholpon is a farmer of honeydew melons. She's also a lifelong member of an ashram with both Vedic & Muslim traditions, which bought an abandoned Soviet collective farm in a valley high in the mountains.
Now the leader of the ashram tells Cholpon of a vision -- that she is to take a load of produce into Bishkek, the distant market town, sell it, bank the earnings... & await her destiny there.
Meanwhile, Jeff Madsen, no longer a youngster in Vietnam, awakens to gunfire. Trying to get a grip on reality, he knows the sound of battle yet can't place himself nor the woman beside him. Finally remembering he's now in the State Department administering foreign aid he watches a raid on the Kyrgyz Air Force Base across the street.
Old warrior that he is, he knows what he's seeing: a unit of intruders blasting the gates, rushing into the base & then returning with something heavy on a pallet which they load into their truck. Old warrior that he is, he gets out into the shadowed street, takes up the weapon of a fallen guard & shoots at the leaving truck, hitting the driver. The vehicle slows & intruders pour from the back. As Base guards arrive to do battle, one of the intruders lobs a grenade & Jeff dives for cover.
Punctured by shrapnel, he staggers back to the apartment where his lover refuses to let him in. As he stumbles along the hallway, heading out, another door opens & another woman asks him if he's hurt.
Cholpon's destiny has arrived.
With equal skill William T. Hathaway, in his debut novel, writes about war zones & battles & meditation & eternity.Summer Snow OverviewA spiritual novel set now amidst the war on terrorism as an American warrior falls in love with a Sufi mystic and learns from her an alternative to the military mentality. As US Special Forces battle al-Qaeda, the escalating violence threatens their future together and the lives of thousands in her country. To save them, she shows him an ancient transcendental way to bring peace to the collective consciousness and prevent terrorism. But can they make it work in time? A story of love in the shadow of destruction, SUMMER SNOW blends passion, adventure, and mystic wisdom to convey its theme that higher consciousness is more effective than violence and that women may be more able than men to lead us there.

Hinduism For Dummies (For Dummies (Religion & Spirituality)) ReviewI married into a wonderful family and have collected a half a dozen versions of the Gita, one of the Upanishads and some books focused on different aspects of the avatars and books describing the stories of the deities and.... I still felt pretty lost much of the time.
This book gives a nice, comprehensive outline to an extraordinarily complex religion. It explains the difference between the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Vedas. It offers the key teaching of spiritual leaders.
More importantly to my in-laws... it has done so with respect for the traditions, teaching and beliefs of those that practice hinduism.
I have a feeling I will read this a couple more times and then go back and work my way through the Gita once more. I have a feeling it will be a much richer experience with the base of knowledge underneath it all.Hinduism For Dummies (For Dummies (Religion & Spirituality)) OverviewYour hands-on guide to one of the world's major religions

The Ancient Reality-Teachings ("Perfect Knowledge" Series) (Perfect Knowledge Series) ReviewThis review applies equally to Reality Is All The God There Is: The Single Transcendental Truth Taught by the Great Sages and the Revelation of Reality Itself, which is essentially the same textual material.
"Reality Itself is the only basis for true sanity and well-being". This books is subtitled: "The Single Transcendental Truth Taught by the Great Sages of Buddhism and Advaitism".
So this book is about the egoless Reality and Real God that is Transcendental Truth, and reveals that absolute non-dual Reality is the essentail Truth. Or, a non-dual, ecstatic, sane, wise, and entirely egoless Reality-Revelation and Way of Reality, not an ego-way.
What is this book about? First of all this book includes extraordinary free renderings of traditional buddhist and advaitic texts, freely rendered in the English language by the fully enlightened Avataric Great Sage, Adi Da Samraj. Works of the Buddha, Nagarjuna, Adi Shankara made to speak alive and anew for all time. The Ribhu Gita sung again, so that all future generations may taste the undying wisdom of primal Reality-Wisdom. These renderings greatly expand upon the meaning, context, and content of these ancient texts, invigorating them, clarifying them, honing precious reality-wisdom and bringing purity of Reality-Truth. Not a mind-based scholarly rendition, but a spiritually discerning heart-clarification of root-wisdom. Just those renderings make this a precious gem of infinite value.
So in making these renderings, in clarifying these traditional teachings, Adi Da Samraj is demonstrating an absolute mastery of understanding of both Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. Most penetrating insight, most clarifying language, and altogether most revelatory of the essential reality-truth that underlies both of these transcendentalist traditions.
But additionally are Adi Da Samraj's focused Essays and discourses on the root matters of transcendental spirituality found in both Buddhism and Advaitism, and his own unique offering of the Reality-Way of Adidam. Considering the presumed historical differences between the traditions, yet always coming back to the root Reality-Teachings of Truth that are the essential essence of both. Considering the difference between talk and actual Realization of Reality-Truth. Clarifying questions offered by Adi Da Samraj's own devotees for the sake of awakening right understanding in all and All.
Indeed, in the final Essay, Advaita Buddha Dharma, a very clear conclusion is pointed at with profundity: the Truth is no-difference, indivisible, one. The language is apparently different between Buddhist and Advaitic Sages, Truth is ONE.
This text illuminates every transcendental truth given to humankind throughout the ages, and outshines all of that in newly enlivened freely rendered wisdom, light, and vast spacious brightness. Any serious student of spiritual esotericism, transcendental wisdom, buddhism, non-duality, Advaita Vedanta, or Ramana Maharshi will find wisdom-nectar and inspiration for practice in this extraordinary Spiritual Gift to all humankind.
And this text is profoundly critical of all ego-based approaches to transcendental and necessarily spiritual reality-truth. This book calls beings to the ego-transcending ordeal of rightly guided practice in esoteric school of authentic practice, neither talk or any mind form is sufficient for actual renunciate realization of egoless prior-to-mind Reality-Truth. As such this book is a beacon of unconditional sanity among the "talkers" of pseudo-spirituality in our adolescent age.
Indeed: Reality Is All The God There Is
This book is part of the "Way of Perfect Knowledge" series of books by Adi Da Samraj, the other titles being:
The Perfect Tradition (The Perfect Knowledge Series)
Religion and Reality (The Perfect Knowledge Series)
The Liberator (The "Perfect Knowledge" Series)
The Way of Perfect Knowledge (The Perfect Knowledge" Series)
Radical Devotion (The Way of Perfect Knowledge series)
And now, all of this material, fully and completely updated to the final instructions given by Avatar Adi Da Samraj, are found in the great Masterwork The Gnosticon
This volume, The Ancient Reality-Teachings, is a profoundly clarifying set of instruction and wisdom about reality-teachings and the great transcendentalist traditions of Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism. And a great revelation force of explication upon the intrinsically egoless Reality-Way of Adidam. The Ancient Reality-Teachings ("Perfect Knowledge" Series) (Perfect Knowledge Series) OverviewWhen Adi Da looked at "The Heart of the Ribhu Gita" he was moved to make his own rendering or "interpretive translation" of the text, in order to elucidate, and thereby honor, its full meaning. He was not intending to re-write the text from his point of view, but, rather, to draw out the real intention of Ribhu, as only another Realizer can. He also reviewed other great dharma from the tradition of Advaita Vedanta and from the Buddhist tradition. He was bringing the essence of the instruction to the fore. The texts whose meanings were only partially (or cryptically) expressed even in the original let alone in translation were suddenly shining forth, like rough gems cut by an expert hand. Adi Da chose to read these texts to his devotees. In each case, he was bringing the essence of the instruction, with an elegance and illumined understanding that left his devotees speechless in amazement. "The traditional texts presented by Me in this Book are only a few in number, but they are outstanding among the most important texts ever written. They are so much to the point that they are profoundly Illuminating--not sufficient for the Awakening of Transcendental Realization Itself, but potentially sufficient to bring anyone to practice at the feet of a true Master. " Adi Da Samraj "To understand the great religions in a new light, one has only to read Adi Da Samraj. Anyone who has an open mind cannot help feeling that his description of the Supreme Yoga of the seventh stage of life is true. Intuitively you will be convinced that Adi Da Samraj knows what he is talking about because of his unique Realization." Roger Savoie, PhD, Philosopher, writer and translator Author: La Vipere et le Lion La Voie radicale de la Spiritualite [The Snake and the Lion, the Radical Way of Spirituality]
