Night of the Living Dead, Vol. 2 ReviewFor those who have read the first Night of the Living Dead graphic novel collection, you will find this to be a worthy successor. If you have never read the comics themselves and have simply waited for the collections to come out (as I did), then you should know that the second Night of the Living Dead collection does not expand upon the stories from the first edition, but rather begins a whole new story, one involving the outbreak of the living dead right in the middle of a large scale war protest during Vietnam, and getting caught in the middle are National Guardsmen called out to keep order. Although that would certainly be relevant subject matter for the time, I did walk away thinking that it was a thinly veiled commentary on the Iraq War, and commentaries about war have gotten a little old. That being said, the artwork and character development is as good as the first, as is the gore and combat against the dead. The characters are believable and you do feel something when some of them meet ghastly deaths. But as in any story, you root for some and against some others. Also, as in the first Night of the Living Dead collection, there is a great deal of gratuitous nudity, but then, that's not usually a bad thing. Admittedly, there is not much here that improves upon the first edition, but as long as it maintains the standard, which it does, you will enjoy this and it will become a good addition to your collection. Again, the only drawback is that sometimes, I just want a good zombie story.
