The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron ReviewThe book was not poorly written, simply...written. It was the equivalent of a high school paper doing a feature article on James Cameron and he is a subject matter that is much more deserving than this.
The book covers his career relatively well, but could have delved deeper. I did enjoy the anecdotes of his early efforts and his fearless attitude on whatever new movie he was working on. Would have liked to hear more about his opinion on the content of his earlier movies rather than his insight of actually making the movies.
Also, the post Titanic content was pretty weak. It focused more on his non-film work, but it would have been interesting to really dig and ask some probing questions on his new found celebrity and the implications of having the biggest box office film in history.
Occasionally we would hear Cameron's opinion's on particular subjects and some movies, but would have enjoyed reading a lot more like this. It was briefly noted that Speilberg and Peter Jackson visited his Avatar set - what a great meeting of the cinematic minds. What about some questions on what that conversation was like? Or asking Cameron's opinions on various films? I've read some recent interviews with him and Cameron is so brutally honest on subjects it quite refreshing. Cameron is a major cinema buff - why not more questions on what films he liked/disliked and why?
Mediocre book...cameron is deserving of much better. The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron Overview

Pop Odyssey ReviewThis is a different download. I haven't seen anything else like this on the Kindle.
Shopper: How is it different?
Me: For starters, everything is in a screenplay format.
Shopper: You mean, like a Shakespeare play?
Me: Locations and character are described in overwhelming detail, much like a Hollywood screenplay.
Shopper: Overwhelming detail?
Me: Each character gets a full page treatment of details as seen in an RPG video game.
Most of the characters have superpowers of some sort. A series of character summaries can go on for 10 pages between pieces of dialog. Makes for very choppy reading.
This is the dialog for a comic book movie, or maybe a comic book, or maybe a game.
"The hippo's chains and muzzle releases. It buckles and shifts as it peers down with anger. A burst of flames erupts from Kairo's arms and shoot around the left side of the colossal beast. Raiden's lightning technique flanks from the hippo's right side. The trail of fire and lightning collide behind the beast..."
I do think the layout is gorgeous. This is the best page to page layout I've seen on the Kindle. The author knows something about design. However, it would have been better to have all the characters in one section (with 1 page per character instead of 2), and the main story in a separate section. With this shuffling, it would be such a gorgeous layout that I would keep it on my Kindle and brave through the whole story, just because the presentation is so intensely unique.
I stopped at the 25% mark.Pop Odyssey OverviewThis is a tale of Us vs Them.US: Evokers. Sealers. Infusers. Mechanical Engineers. Artificers.THEM: Robots. Monsters. Infected. Zombies. Aliens? Yeah, "aliens."The result: A throwdown of EPIC proportions.

The Final Evolution (Avery Cates) ReviewAvery Cates is back in The Final Evolution by Jeff Somers. This is the final chapter in the Avery Cates saga (for now?) and it ties up loose ends and brings us to a satisfying conclusion. The first book "The Electric Church" has always been my favorite in the series mainly because the first person writing style and an author not afraid of using the "F" word like it is used in everyday life, in other words if you don't like that word then you would truly miss out on a great reading experience. The Electric Church was the introduction that set us off on this action packed journey and The Final Evolution for me is right up with there now and coming in a close second which makes it a really good bookend.
In The Final Evolution we have Avery Cates on his hunt to track down and finally take out Canny Orel who has now placed himself in a Monk body with the God Augmentation. The rub is that in order to save the human race Avery must decide on taking Canny Orel alive or giving in to his vengeance and taking him out once and for all.
That's all you are getting from me as far as plot details, this book is a fast paced cyberpunk explosion of gun toting adventure and I wouldn't want to ruin a second of it. If you have not read the first 4 books in the series then you should probably stop reading this right now and go to your favorite book store and just pick up the entire series and start reading through them in order. One of the great things about Jeff's writing over many other authors is his ability to push the story and not bore the reader with recaps of the last book in the series. If you are reading this book then most likely you read the prior books and if you didn't then you will most definitely want to or you are going to be lost and we wouldn't want you lost with such a thrill ride that is there to be taken.
There is one part in the Final Evolution that you see Avery break from his hard style and you get a glimpse of the man inside. Be looking for this moment around the time when Avery is dealing with irradiated people who have been pushed by Canny Orel to do his bidding. It is basically just one line but it highlights the growth of the character and the culmination of all the pressures and stress that Avery has been through. It is a crack that has been placed in that hard exterior but it is a perfect placement for it and really pulls you into the characters psyche. If you have followed the character this long then it really hits you.
Suffice it to say that this is the perfect ending to a thrilling series. You get an ending that fits the character completely and does not disappoint. While this may be the end of the line for the Avery Cates series (for now?) I am anxiously awaiting new characters and future books from Jeff Somers. I'm interested in seeing what new worlds he brings us in the future.
1 Star - Bad/ 2 Stars - underwhelming/ 3 Stars - Good/ 4 Stars - Very Good/ 5 Stars - ExcellentThe Final Evolution (Avery Cates) OverviewThe world is dying. With avatars replacing humans and the birth rate non-existent, the human race is almost extinct. In the end, it comes down to Canny Orel; Avery's long sought after nemesis -- transformed now into something other than human.Orel might hold the secret to humanity's salvation, if he can be convinced -- or forced -- to relinquish it. And when Cates chances on a way to trick his old master, he suddenly has a choice to make: get his long-delayed revenge, or save the world.

Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other ReviewWhat I love about this book is that a whole person wrote it. Turkle includes both original research and her everyday experiences as a mother and a friend.
Unlike many books about technology, this book does not try to tell a simple story about it being good or bad. Its goal seems to be to help us live a better life in partnership with technology. Do we really want to give up privacy online? Do we really want to text during family dinners? Do we really want our companionship to be replaced by robotic companionship?
Instead of pretending you must take a side for or against technology, "Alone Together" asks us to look out for ourselves and what is good for us. My favorite idea is that the point is not to get rid of technology but that each individual must stop and think where it fits in his or her life.
"Alone Together" is a great read. The language is sometimes poetic and sometimes funny, but always compelling. Its ideas and questions are powerful and are long-lasting.
Highly recommended for everyone.Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other Overview

Buddha - The Gospel ReviewAwesome History of the Buddha, written in a KJV type style, so that any Christian who is familiar with that type of reading could easily pick up on the style and appreciate a man who came 500 years before Jesus and influenced him.
Favorite part:
In the Kalama Sutra, Buddha says.
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it..
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
Buddha - The Gospel OverviewThe Gospel of Buddha by Paul Carus is modeled on the New Testament and tells the story of Buddha through parables. this book was an important tool in introducing Buddhism to the west.

The Weeping Stars: A Frank Belknap Long Collection (Five Frank Long science fiction stories in one volume) ReviewFrank Belknap Long was a noted writer of horror fiction, one of the early acolytes of H.P. Lovecraft. But Long also wrote science fiction and, although he is not much remembered today for his S-F, this Kindle anthology shows that he was quite accomplished in that genre as well.
This collection includes five short stories, one ("The Sky Trap," the weakest of the bunch) from 1941, the other four from 1951-1954. What is notable about them is their humanistic emphasis-- Long focuses not so much on gadgets as on people's reactions to them. The stories deal with relatively common science fiction themes-- human settlers on an alien planet ("The Man the Martians Made"), time travel ("The Man from Time"), alien visitors to earth ("The Calm Man," "The Mississippi Saucer")-- but Long gives the stories a unique twist through his focus on his characters and their emotions. These may not be great stories, but they are certainly well worth reading. The Weeping Stars: A Frank Belknap Long Collection (Five Frank Long science fiction stories in one volume) OverviewNOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, and your ipod e-book reader.'The Weeping Stars' is a collection of stories written by acclaimed science-fiction author, Frank Belknap Long. He explored sociological, political and metaphysical themes in stories dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states.Long was a prolific American writer of horror fiction, fantasy, science fiction, poetry, gothic romance, comic books, and non-fiction. Though his writing career spanned seven decades, he is best known for his horror and science fiction short stories, including early contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos.During his life, Long received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (at the 1978 World Fantasy Convention), the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement (in 1987, from the Horror Writers Association), and the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award (1977).Included in this volume:Story One: The Calm Man - Sally watched the molten gold glow in the sky. Then knew she would not see her son and her husband ever again on Earth. First appeared in Fantastic Universe May 1954.Story Two: The Man from Time - The method by which one man might be pinpointed in the vastness of all Eternity was the problem tackled by the versatile Frank Belknap Long in this story. And as all minds of great perceptiveness know, it would be a simple, human quality he'd find most effective even in solving Time-Space.Story Three: The Man the Martians Made - No mortal had ever seen the Martians, but they had heard their whisperings-without knowing the terrible secret they kept hidden.Story Four: The Mississippi Saucer - Something of the wonder that must have come to men seeking magic in the sky in days long vanished.Story Five: The Sky Trap - Lawton enjoyed a good fight. He stood happily trading blows with Slashaway Tommy, his lean-fleshed torso gleaming with sweat. He preferred to work the pugnacity out of himself slowly, to savor it as it ebbed...This are the original and unabridged versions of these tales. A must-have for science fiction fans!

Visions of Distant Shores: An Andre Norton Collection (Seven Andre Norton novels in one volume) ReviewAndre` Norton was one of my favorite authors as a child. I remember picking out Star Born at a visiting Bookmobile while I was in the sixth grade and being enthralled with the story.
Later I discovered her Solar Queen series through Voodoo Planet/Star Hunter (an Ace double book) and Sargasso of Space. These stories fired my imagination more than anything else did at the time.
In this Kindle Collection of Novels, you get two of the Solar Queen tales (Voodoo Planet and Plague Ship) as well as the excellent Star Hunter, and Star Born. There are an additional three novels that I haven't read yet, but will enjoy through this anthology.
While I am a little disappointed that I cannot get a collection of Miss Norton's entire group of Solar Queen adventures on Kindle, this is a reasonable start ... and at only a buck, it's hard to go wrong even if you decide you don't like her writing style.
Do be warned that much of the material is dated and has long been outstripped by real world science. But if you make allowances and read the books for enjoyment rather than picking them apart for inconsistencies, you'll have many enjoyable hours of touring among the stars.

Visions of Distant Shores: An Andre Norton Collection (Seven Andre Norton novels in one volume) OverviewNOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, and your ipod e-book reader.'Visions of Distant Shores' is a collection of stories written by award-winning science-fiction author, Andre Norton. In most of Norton's works, alienated outsiders undertake a journey through which they realize their full potential. Many planets in the books are Earth-like places, where humans can live without special protection, and have extensive flora and fauna which are described in considerable detail and often have substantial bearing on the plot.On February 20, 2005, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, which had earlier honored her with its Grand Master Award in 1983, announced the creation of the Andre Norton Award, to be given each year for an outstanding work of fantasy or science fiction for the young adult literature market, beginning in 2006. Nobody today is telling better stories of straight-forward interstellar adventure.Included in this volume:Book One: Storm Over Warlock - Stranded on the alien world of Warlock, Shann Lantree's expedition camp has been wiped out by the Throgs, beings so alien that humans have yet to communicate with them. Lantree must quickly learn how to survive under harsh conditions while being chased by the Throgs -- and how to distinguish the real from the dreamed when he meets the mysterious Wyverns. A satisfying and mature novel which readers will seize upon if they want to enjoy a good adventure story...Book Two: Star Born - When the oppressive global dictatorship of Pax took over Earth they put a stop to space exploration. Still, a few rebels escaped in the sleeper ships to found free new colonies -- or perish in the attempt. Those few colonists that reached inhabitable worlds were cut off for centuries, and in that isolation and freedom they developed the mysterious mental powers that "civilization" had all but destroyed...Book Three: Star Hunter - Somewhere on the jungle world of Jumala, there was a man in hiding--a man whose mind had been reconditioned with another's brain pattern and for whom there was a fabulous reward. Star Hunter is a thrill-packed account of that other-worldly game of hide-and-seek between a man who did not know all his own powers and an interstellar safari that sought something no man had a right to find...Book Four: Plague Ship - A fast-moving suspense tale, full of unusual detail and unexpected turns. Several highlights make the book really shine: the sunset gorp hunt on the reefs of an oily sea; a raid on an asteroid's emergency station; and a landing in the Big Burn, resulting in an encounter with the mutant life-forms that reside there...Book Five: Voodoo Planet - Dane Thorson of the space-trader 'Solar Queen' found himself embroiled in a desperate battle of minds between the rational science of the spaceways and the hypnotic witchcraft of the mental wizard that ruled the Voodoo Planet...Book Six: The Gifts of Asti - Varta, the last priestess of Asti, lives alone with Lur, a telepath of the lizardfolk, in Asti's isolated mountain retreat. Decadent Memphir has long since drifted away from the austere paths of Asti, and now the barbarians of Klem are sacking the city, and the smoke of its burning drifts up to the temple...Book Seven: The People of the Crater - "Send the Black Throne to dust; conquer the Black Ones, and bring the Daughter from the Caves of Darkness." These were the tasks Garin must perform to fulfill the prophecy of the Ancient Ones--and establish his own destiny in this hidden land! This are the original and unabridged versions of these tales. Fragile and Distant Suns: A Poul Anderson Collection ReviewI wouldn't even be writing this review if it hadn't been for Amazon's claim that this edition "has been beautifully formatted". Truth be told, this edition is very poorly formatted and is shoddy. Illustrations that were in the original text have been replaced with the word [Illustration], there are incorrect words used that are clearly due to text recognition errors. This is the kind of thing I expect to see from a work that has been scanned and OCR'd for free, not something I pay for at Amazon.Fragile and Distant Suns: A Poul Anderson Collection OverviewNOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, and your ipod e-book reader. A collection of science fiction stories written by acclaimed author Poul Anderson.Poul Anderson is best known for sci-fi adventure stories in which larger-than-life characters succeed gleefully or fail heroically. Anderson's also famous for writing 'Call Me Joe' (not included in this volume) which featured the premise of a paralyzed man whose mind is remotely controlling an alien body. This same theme also appears in James Cameron's 2009 movie "Avatar" - similar enough that some reviewers are calling for Anderson to receive some form of credit.Included in this volume:Story One: Duel on SyrtisBold and ruthless, he was famed throughout the System as a big-game hunter. The Complete Yoga of Emotional-Sexual Life: The Way Beyond Ego-Based Sexuality ReviewAs a human being, one generally discovers that Western society has some issues around sexuality. Either being very uptight. Or being promiscous. In any case, where is happiness, love, light, peace, spiritual profundity, God-Realization, and freedom from bondage in the domain of human emotional-sexual life.
The work of Avatar Adi Da Samraj included vast energy directed at the right process of human emotional-sexual life, because Adi Da discovered that human beings bondage to sex, or the emotional-sexual search for self-fulfillment via coupling, copulation, and ordinary life level seeking was (and is) a profound limitation on the inherent human urge to self-trascending Real-God-Realization at the heart. And liberating the heart from bondage is the root-essence of all the transcendental spirtiual and teaching work of the Great Master, Adi Da Samraj.
This book is the summary of Adi Da Samraj's investigations into human emotional-sexual life, a precious, profound, healing, heart-awakened, wisdom view of one of mankind's most perplexing issues. Especially from the "spiritual" or religious perspective, what is right emotional-sexual life? What is right sex? What is right relationship? What about homosexuality? What about celibacy? What about "tantric sex"? All the apparent questions and more are resolved in the compassionate wisdom company of His Divine Presence, Adi Da Samraj. I cannot speak more highly about this book.
One talk, Love Breaks the Heart, and That Is Where the Profound Real Practice of Adidam Begins, itself is a most heart-breaking investigation into the heart-break of this mortal life, wherein everyone and everything we love and hold dear is certainly to be taken, sooner or later, in death. And then what of intimacy, and love, and sex, in the midst of this bound-to-death condition of everyone?
This is most profound, liberating, sane, wise, compassionate, and joyous wisdom communication from one who has transcended unlove, illusion, doubt, and mind, a precious testimony and gift of instruction to all moved to a "truly sane" emotional-sexual life. Truly, a unique, wonderous, and must-read book. The Complete Yoga of Emotional-Sexual Life: The Way Beyond Ego-Based Sexuality OverviewThe core practices of the emotionally and sexually balanced teachings on love, intimacy, and sexual relationships from the Realized Master Avatar Adi Da Samraj • Teaches how to overcome the emotional patterning that hinders healthy sexual relationships • Presents a solitary yogic discipline to restore the bipolar integrity of the individual • Shows how to entirely transcend emotional-sexual patterns In all the domains of human life, we now understand the need for an integration of body, mind, and spirit. But despite this comprehension of the holistic nature of existence, much of the teaching offered on sexuality--even sacred sexuality--concentrates on the physical practice, to the detriment of emotional intimacy. Avatar Adi Da Samraj explains that our emotional-sexual life can only be made right through the process of restoring the bipolar balance of the body, and by transcending the ego, the illusory sense of separate existence. He advocates that sexual practice initially become a solitary yogic discipline--an embracing and reclaiming of one's own body--to restore the bipolar integrity that is at the core of every human being. Once this bipolar integrity is established, he shows how a sexual practice of true intimacy--free of clinging attachment--is possible. He also teaches that an unconscious, early childhood reaction to the mother and father governs the emotional-sexual life, a reaction that must be understood and transcended. The emotional-sexual practices taught by Avatar Adi Da are centered in the understanding that love breaks the heart and show that learning how to have intimacy without ego-based attachment is where profound practice begins.

Spiritual Teachings of the Avatar: Ancient Wisdom for a New World ReviewA couple of weeks ago, I found myself attending an International Book Launch for a book I didn't care about, by an author I had never heard of. In fact, I had attempted to NOT attend this event. However, through a series of synchronicities, not only did I attend, I ended up volunteering to help setup the event.
Prior to the event, I did a half-hearted search on the book, and saw that it was titled, "Spiritual Teachings of the Avatar". Surely, a cash grab book to capitalize on James Cameron's Avatar success I thought to myself. A week later, I'm very grateful that the Universe conspired to have me at the book launch.
My spiritual journey started a couple of years ago and while I knew there was great wisdom in the Hindu and Indian teachings, I never really got into it. Its treasure was buried too deep in words I couldn't pronounce, and stories I couldn't relate to. That all has changed with Jeffrey Armstrong's book subtitled, "Ancient Wisdom for a New World". Fortunately for us, this New World is on Earth, and not on Pandora.
"Spiritual Teachings of the Avatar" is a wonderful introduction into the ancient teachings. Jeffrey's conversational style and passion for teaching is evident throughout the book. While at the Book Launch event, I had met several of his devoted students and wondered what he was like at his workshops and weekly meetings. After reading his book, I have no doubt that his message and stories are every bit as accessible to the every day person whether in print or in person.
If you're wondering if this book review is about the person as much as it is about the book; yes, it is: for two reasons. 1) Jeffrey Armstrong has spent 40 years studying the Ancient Teachings, and after having read his book, in my opinion, this book is as much him as he is it. 2) Many gurus or teachers I have come across have shared their knowledge from a place of ego. This is not the case with Jeffrey, both in regards to having met him briefly in person, and after having read his book. His pure authenticity towards the growth and love of those around him is reflected not only from his students, but also from this book.
Jeffrey is able to communicate ancient stories and wisdom so that I can relate and understand them without disrepecting or degrading the source material. A difficult task when faced with Sanskrit or stories that seem ridiculous when taken literally. Each chapter is packed with just the right balance of ancient tales and present day analogies. As a testament to his true intention of helping the world assimulate ancient wisdom, Jeffrey includes a "Meditation and Practices" section at the end of the book that provides topics to meditate and ponder organized by chapters. As any true guru will tell you, "You have all the answers already inside you. I just show you where to look." In addition to the pragmatic section, there is one other appendix titled "Wisdom of the Avatars" which provides three key points from each chapter as a quick reference.
Thanks to Jeffrey's passionately accessible treatment of the Ancient Wisdom, I've decided to expand my old world by giving my copy of the Bhagavad Gita another go. With a new set of 4D glasses, perhaps I'll be able to touch the Pandora within.Spiritual Teachings of the Avatar: Ancient Wisdom for a New World OverviewSpiritual Teachings of the Avatar speaks to anyone concerned with the sustainability of Mother Earth, the role of elders in our society, the seemingly unconsciousness of science and corporations, and the subtleties of unseen realities, resulting in spiritual growth, a deeper relationship with nature, and a better world for all. An avatar is a manifestation of the Supreme Being—usually in human form—that descends from the transcendental realm to Earth to heal the planet and restore peace and harmony by eliminating the harmful souls that prey on Mother Earth. In Spiritual Teachings of the Avatar, Vedic expert and teacher Jeffrey Armstrong explains the ancient Indian wisdoms embodied in the word "avatar," and that behind the notion of avatar is a view that sees the sacredness of all life and the soul of all beings as eternal—meant for freedom and made of divine essence.
