The Eternal Prison (Avery Cates, Book 3) ReviewWhile I thought that The Electric Church was one of the best recent science fiction works I've read, I felt that the follow-up book, The Digital Plague, was less than fulfilling. Jeff Somers has returned to form, however, in the third installment of the Avery Cates series, The Eternal Prison.
Avery Cates is back in The Eternal Prison, which takes place soon after end of the digital plague from the second book. The cops and the army are fighting it out for control of society. Cates, the anti-hero hitman, gets pinched by the cops and thrown into Chengara, a prison specially developed for "people of interest" like himself. Cates has to use all of his wits to stay alive, and staying alive means breaking out.
The action moves along briskly in The Eternal Prison and avoids most of the exposition that slowed down The Digital Plague. Cates always has a new set of associates, since being a Cates associate tends to dramatically reduce life expectancy, but some old familiar faces also are in the mix. The new characters are woven into the story well and are, for the most part, more interesting than most of the new faces from The Digital Plague.
Probably the best thing about this entry in the series, apart from Somers' pacing, are the changes in Avery Cates. He's famous, he's tough, but as things continue to slide downhill, Cates begins to wonder if fighting is even worth the bother, especially if things look like they'll turn out the same way in the end. Or, if he goes on, for what purpose? Cates works through the questions in Cates fashion, simply but directly, without Somers turning him into some fountain of metaphysical mess.
It's a great installment, a return to the tight pacing of The Electric Church, and the central character is revitalized as something more than a stereotype. The Eternal Prison is definitely worth your time and money.
The Eternal Prison (Avery Cates, Book 3) OverviewAvery Cates is a wanted man. After surviving the worst bioengineered disaster in history, Cates finds himself incarcerated - in Chengara Penitentiary. As Chengara has a survival rate of exactly zero, the system's most famous gunner must do some serious plotting. And a betrayal or so later, he achieves his goal. At a price. All he has to do now is defeat some new personal demons, forge some unlikely alliances, and figure out why the people he's killed lately just won't stay dead.

The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) ReviewThis is Skurzynski's fourth book in the Virtual War Chronologs. While it's possible to read each book as a stand-alone book, you would lose an incredible amount of the story. I would highly recommend starting with "Virtual War: The Virtual War Chronologs" and then continue with "The Clones," "The Revolt," and lastly "The Choice." In this story Corgan is now 16 and has matured quite a bit. The book is rated for grades 5-8, but he faces many problems and decisions that adults would have trouble with, and I found myself totally immersed in the different dilemmas. As an animal lover, I also love the way animals are incorporated into the story. I don't want to give anything away to someone who has read the first three books, but if you are a SciFi fan you'll love this series! The conclusion will keep you on the edge of your seat. The books are well-researched and have good scientific detail. They're also pretty easy to read and are incredibly fast-paced. A perfect weekend would be to get all four books and read them start to finish, especially if you're snowed in and sitting by a fire! The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) Overview

MetalMagic: Talisman ReviewDerek Donais' initial entry into Fantasy Fiction is a heartfelt, adrenaline-laced adventure that gives readers what they want while providing keen insights. The book's first chapter introduces readers to the main character, an inquisitive boy that wants to understand Metanduil and its link to those that are gifted enough to use the alloy to perform magic. Jaren's sister, Morgaine, has the ability to use the magic metal but Jaren does not, despite the increasing connection he feels to the magic.
An immediate conflict emerges between Jaren, Morgaine, and another gifted village girl. It is a conflict that will force the brother and sister to leave everything behind in search of refuge, but the pair is chased across the land by sinister agents. Morgaine has the potential to become a truly powerful Valir (someone that wields Metanduil and acts as an advisor to the land's various kings). The agents are desperate to reach Morgaine and deliver her to a corrupted Valir that has developed a weapon that can destroy kingdoms with a single blow. The Warwitch has already killed one king and her army threatens to overrun the rest of the world.
What none of them, including Jaren, realize is that the boy is the most powerful of them all. Jaren can use magic without the use of magic metal, but his first attempt at controlling the power is an utter failure...and without control, Jaren knows that he will destroy everything around him, including those he loves.
Donais' writing style is fluid while providing outstanding descriptive narrative; it is the kind of writing style that readers of any age should enjoy because the author understands all of the creative elements of a great story: plot, tempo, theme, and mood. Most importantly, MagicMetal has a message for all of us that live in the modern, technically driven world: science and technology are tools, they are neither good nor evil. It is how we, as individuals, decide to use these tools that determine if we are good.
The climatic finish kept me on edge for the last hour of reading as I fought beside Donais' heroes. I could see the instant flashes of magic in a multitude of colors. I could feel the power of the spells. I felt the emotions of Jaren and his sister as they struggled to survive against the Warwitch...
This was an outstanding first book for a new voice in Fantasy Fiction. I highly recommend reading this novel and watching Derek Donais over the coming years. I am hoping for many more novels from this writer.

The Terminal State (Avery Cates) ReviewAvery Cates can't seem to get a break. He's somewhat like Indiana Jones in the sense that he is the reluctant hero and things keep adding up and working against him... just Avery seems to come out worse for wear at the end of every adventure. The Terminal State is the fourth book in the Avery Cates series which is authored by Jeff Somers.
The book is an excellent fast paced read into a Noir/ Cyber Punk/ Sci-Fi world that is great fun to read about but we really don't want it to ever happen to us. Society has collapsed and the SSF (police) who are basically machine avatars are on one side of the fight while the army fighting them is on the other side. Humans and Avery Cates in particular are caught in the middle. Once again Avery is forced back on the rail and things are set in motion that are out of his hands but the ride is worth every penny of the price of admission.
Avery gets pressed and forced into the army. While he is given all sorts of nifty augments life just doesn't get better for our hero... if you can call him that. You see, Avery Cates isn't a good man. He's rather selfish and in it for himself. He says freely what others only think and does what ever he wants. He does live by a code that may be twisted but it is also one of the reasons Avery Cates is a hero.
The writing is witty and clever and Jeff Somers has Avery saying some of the best lines I've read in any book. The futility of the situation leads to lines that will just crack you up and make your day brighter. Just for an example of style, think of Jeff Somers as the love child of William Gibson and Douglas Adams. Now that is not bad company to be in at all.
You should definitely read this series if you like Noir/ Cyberpunk/ Sci-Fi and when you do start with the first book or you may get lost. One of the great things that Jeff Somers does not do is use three or four pages to remind readers of what happened in the last book. Sometimes it is a couple of sentences and nothing deeply descriptive which in my opinion is a good thing. I know authors do it so books can be read out of order but it just annoys me. If you are reading the series you should start at number one and keep going.
The three previous books were also 5 out 5 Stars so pick them up and check them out. I've put them in order below:
1) The Electric Church
2) The Digital Plague
3) The Eternal Prison
4) The Terminal State
I will now be anxiously awaiting the 5th book due in 2011: The Final EvolutionThe Terminal State (Avery Cates) OverviewAvery Cates is an army man.Between the army's new dental plan and a set of first class augments, he's been given a second chance - albeit a quick one. When a corrupt officer decides to make some money on the side by selling new recruits, Cates finds himself in uncharted territory.Sold to the highest bidder, his visions of escape and revenge quickly come to an end when he realizes who's bought him - and for what.Because the high bidder is Canny Orel himself. And he wants Cates to do one last job as the System slides into chaos.Cates will have one shot at getting back at Canny - but this time, Canny is holding all the cards.

Cyberdrome ReviewReal Scifi!
What a thrill ride! Just finished Cyberdrome. The sample convinced me to buy the full download right away. Top notch, highly original, this should be selling in bucket-fulls.
Cyberdrome is relentlessly fast-paced. It is very imaginative, with multiple environments and scenarios, and a multitude of potential bad guys. Separating out the heroes, anti-heroes and out-and-out bad guys from the rest, while keeping abreast of the twists and turns in this fascinating plot, is a job and a half! The film Tron comes to mind here, with humans trapped inside a giant computer but there the resemblance ends. Instead of low-res graphics, Cyberdrome is the equivalent of fully rendered 3D action, with protagonists pitted not against a guy on a cycle but against a megalomaniac computer program with versatile adversaries at its command.
Being ex-IT myself I liked all the computer references but understanding these was not essential to following the thrust and heady zest of the novel.
Reminds me also of Ghost in the Shell, where variously cyberised humans inhabit a hazardous future world somewhere between program data and reality. However, Cyberdrome has the benefit of humans fully integrated with the computer and non-stop, heart-pumping action along the way. If you like the film `Avatar', you will almost certainly like this.
Cyberdrome OverviewA disturbing glimpse into a digital future, not far from now.Mathew Grey is a brilliant scientist who accidentally unleashed a man-made plague that ravaged America's heartland, and now threatens the rest of the planet. Riddled with guilt and running out of time, he decides to use a dangerous technology to enter a computer-generated reality called Cyberdrome, hoping to unravel a mystery that could be the key to Earth's survival.Alek Grey was an athlete whose career was cut short by a near-fatal accident. Now he is a software hacker with the unique ability to outsmart the best Artificial Intelligence programs of his day. When he is called in after one of his programs inadvertently attacks Cyberdrome, he is shocked to learn that both his father and ex-fiancée have become trapped inside the simulation, unable to be removed without risk of death.Alek knows of only one way to rescue the people he loves, but will he risk all of humanity to save them?

Net Impact ReviewNet Impact by Donald J. Bingle is not your dad's spy novel. This is a modern spy thriller about a realistic agent working for a shadow company, The Subsidiary, affiliated with several different sovereign nations. The details are crisp and main character is a fully drawn man with an exciting career in espionage, but a terrible life at home, as he rarely sees his wife and son, who are becoming more and more upset with his always gone lifestyle. His marriage is in serious trouble as he is sent on a mission to New Zealand to stop the transfer of unmanned drone plans and goes from there as our he uncovers the truth about a very diabolical plot apropos for our modern internet age.
The most fascinating thing about the novel is the inclusion of the fictional virtual world of Reality 2 Be, think Second Life, where a lot of secret and illegal activity happens--which is not fiction. I had no idea, but in the virtual worlds of the internet money is transferred, criminals conduct clandestine meetings, and rebels and terrorists get together right under the nose of the world governments who have no idea of how to monitor and police the virtual worlds. Sure, we've seen spies infiltrate the lairs of the bad guys, but I hadn't seen one infiltrate a virtual world before, and it was cool to see how the plot brought the virtual and real world together in a very fascinating twist.
The strength of the book is the accurate main character, who is so good at what he does, but not in a sort of silly James Bond way. This is more of a Jason Bourne crossed with that cool uncle of yours who was a lineman in football, then army ranger, and a cop before he became a private consultant. He's a realistic spy, who uses his keen intellect and pragmatic philosophy to get the job done--and he's known for causing mass destruction, but he gets the mission accomplished no matter what. Sure, there are a few gunfights, fires, computer hacking moments, and big explosions, but OMG, the ending is pretty amazing and I didn't see that one coming. I'm pretty certain no spy has ever used what this guy used to accomplish the mission at the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well as Bingle's other novels, Forced Conversion and Greensword. His short fiction has always entertained me as well, and I look forward to his next project.
Net Impact is a short, punchy, realistic spy thriller for the modern age, and once you read this, you'll never look at the internet the same way again.
Paul Genesse, author and editor
Net Impact OverviewDick Thornby is not Hollywood's idea of a spy.In his rough and tumble job there are no tailored Italian suits, no bimbos eager to please, and no massive underground fortresses built by evil overlords seeking world domination-just an endless series of sinister threats to the safety and security of the billions of mundane citizens of the planet.Sure, Dick's tough and he knows a few tricks to help him get out of a tight spot, even if his boss accuses him of over-reliance on an abundance of explosives. But he's also got a mortgage, a wife upset by his frequent absences on "business" trips, and an increasingly alienated teen-age son who spends way too much time playing in gaming worlds on the computer. When a mission to bust up an arms exchange in New Zealand goes spectacularly bad, ending with the showy destruction of the Dunedin port facility, Dick is thrown into a maze of conflict involving Hong Kong arms dealers, cyber-criminals, Chinese government goons attempting to suppress computer access by dissidents, and even militant Maoris seeking rocket launchers to shoot down tourist-laden jumbo jets. Then a young computer expert back at the Philadelphia headquarters for The Subsidiary, an international espionage agency created in the aftermath of 9/11, discovers that the bad guys are involved in a vast conspiracy.Dick is forced to partner with the espionage neophyte to battle evil on multiple fronts, leading to a final confrontation that incorporates real-world conspiracy theories and cutting-edge technology. In the end, Dick can save his partner, save his marriage, save his son, or save the world, but he can't do it all.

Discourses ReviewThis book gives you essential spiritual insight and answers to all the major questions and problems of life. Meher Baba helps you look at life from a spiritual point of view, allowing you to understand why the world is why it is and why you are the way you are... beware though, you may find the answers to be deceptively simple. Meher Baba speaks with divine authority.. there is no "my opinion is.." or "research shows.." or "..is probably because" written in this book. I cannot recommend this book enough! From a personal standpoint, the person I was when I started reading this book was not the same person who finished reading it... and believe me when I say I had wracked my soul in trying to find answers in life that were provided here. But most importantly, reading this was a catalyst for allowing me to feel God's love that unites all life. Can I logically explain this? No. Will this happen to you? Only if it's meant to. Should you read this book anyway? Absolutely. Did Meher Baba expect everyone to be able to follow these spiritual practices perfectly? I would most definitely guess not... I know I can't. Meher Baba basically wrote a how-to and explanation book about the journey to God.Discourses Overview

Black Summer ReviewThis story opens with a doozy of a opening: The preemeniant superhero of the United States, essentially the Superman of the story, murders the President & all his top advisors. He then calmly holds a press conference to say that he judged them guilty for their crimes, and that he expects new elections to be held in short order.
Chaos, of course, ensues.
Not the least of which for his estranged former teammates, who now find them the targets of every force the stunned government can bring to bear, on the presumption that they are all in on a conspiracy to overthrow the United States.
Except the truth is more complicated and messy than that, and as the history of the team of superheroes is gradually revealed it becomes clear that none of these people are exactly psychologically stable. And maybe you don't want unstable people wielding enough power to level cities. Or maybe the power made them unstable.
In a twisty, action-packed and over-the-top violent tale, Ellis & the hyper detailed artist Juan Jose Ryp explore a world not unlike the one of Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons' Watchmen, and asks the pertinant questions of what might happen if a super-being decided that he had some kind of moral responsibility to step outside the normal functions of society.
In the midst of this is a fun and intriguing cast of characters, the former superteam that operate as clandestine vigilantes of mass destruction. Their personalities and powers are the driving force of the book, with both being equally inventive and imaginative. While the ending may be a little abrupt, this is a powerful tale that manages to entertain you with action while raising troubling questions about the authority of brute force.Black Summer OverviewWarren Ellis' eight-issue opus of masked hero revolution, Black Summer, perfectly complimented by the stunning and explosive art of the genius Juan Jose Ryp, is nothing less than a sequential masterpiece! The world goes black in this epic story of super-powered heroes and villains. The story begins when the political situation in the United States becomes more than Horus can stand, and he moves to take matters into his own hands. Unfortunately, not all of his team-mates are quite so eager to throw the world into chaos, and an epic conflict ensues. With Horus and the rest of the surviving Guns facing off against the military and each other, no one is safe as the bodies start to fall.

Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch Review
Wow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch OverviewTwo powerful wizards battle for the greatest magical force ever to exist. Islandia The Lost Colony (The ANKH Trilogy) ReviewI am not much of a sci-fi fan but thouroughly enjoyed this book. This was much more than what I was expecting. Am looking forward to the next book so I can continue the story of Jonathon and Marcia as they teach and discover the world of Islandia.Islandia The Lost Colony (The ANKH Trilogy) OverviewBook one of the ANKH Trilogy, the story of Earth's fifteenth colony, 450 years after being settled. It is a water world with tens of thousands of islands and very little usable landmass to build the cities the original pioneers envisioned. Without the ability to recreate an Earth-like civilization, their descendents sink back to a more primitive time and create a society of clanboats and small villages. Into this world is born Jonathon McKinnah, known as Jonny Oarboy to his fellow clansmen. An accidental contact brings Jonny in touch with an alien entity who has rested quietly on Islandia for 6,000 years. The two of them start an incredible journey taking them from the past to the present, from Islandia to old Earth, and finally to Earth's other colonies.

Primal Rage: The Avatars ReviewPrimal Rage, for those who don't know, was a popular videogame that brought a lot of gamers's attention, thanks in part to the storyline, gameplay system, and much more. Sure, it was a fighting game that cloned several other games, like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II, but it's a great game in it's own merits. Thanks to John Vornholt, a book has been released long ago and it stills entertains Primal Rage fans in the years to come.
The story is simple and uncomplicated. While the dino-gods are fighting for world domination, Necrosan, a new god, enters their world and banishes them using a spell called the "Bonds Of Forbidding." However, their shamans are left to fight their new adversary and haven't given up yet. Meanwhile, one of the dino-gods has a plan - using their powers, they can allow their shamans to transform into them for one hour. However, as the shamans gain this new power, some are power-hungry with this new-found gift, while others are sticking to the real goal: freeing the gods and defeating Necrosan once and for all.
This is a great book, not because of it's story, but a lot of action is implemented. Those who tend to like action will love what Primal Rage: The Avatars has to offer. It's sad to note that this book also dwells on the storyline for Primal Rage 2, which was, unfortunately, never released, and would give gamers an idea of what the game would played and sound liked. Finally, the book includes another devastating flaw - it does not include more backgrounds of all the dino-gods, save for Blizzard.
Other than that, it's highly recommanded that players give Primal Rage - The Avatars a second chance to read. It's a great, although short, book and it's worth anyone's time and patience!Primal Rage: The Avatars OverviewThe wars known as the "Primal Rage" have ended. The great dino-gods have been magically imprisoned and Necrosan, an evil creature of fearsome power, lays waste to Urth with his undead armies. In his way stand the Avatars, who must free their dino-god masters or watch Necrosan conquer Urth.

The Tenth Avatar ReviewMr. Naiman has written a great book for long travels or cold nights by the fireplace. For one think it is just the right length for a long trip abroad. Second, it has many references to global locations with a lot of local history and color. Showed solid research. A bit on the intellectual side, but lots of action. Highly recommended. The Tenth Avatar OverviewFour strangers journey to the Far East, each escaping a bitter past.
