FrameShifting: A Path to Wholeness ReviewDr. Banner has a PhD in Management. He writes that a voice awakened him in the night and told him to write this book about the transcendence of the individual ego. His descriptions of his personal experiences with techniques aimed at this are sometimes engaging, but not focused. He briefly touches on a potpourri of people and systems of thought that have inspired him, for example, Yogananda, Ram Dass, Eckhart Tolle, the Course in Miracles, Spiral Dynamics, the Enneagram, Ken Wilber, the Law of Attraction, Carlos Castaneda, and so on. 'Frameshifting' refers to changing the frame through which one sees the world. (I am very tired of these newly combined 'words' that are used to create snappy titles.)
This earnest attempt at synthesis is not very successful because of the author's disorganized approach and writing style, and the brevity with which he treats each topic. The text is heavy on quotations from others. Sometimes his own writing is unclear enough that the meaning is murky.
I kept wanting to refer Dr. Banner to Buddhism, which he never mentions, because it thoroughly addresses the issue with which he's wrestling.
There is a bibliography, but some of the authors whom he quotes are not included.FrameShifting: A Path to Wholeness OverviewEver wonder why certain events allow you to expand your consciousness oralter who you think you are beyond what you normally experience?Through the power of Frameshifting, I'll show you how you can haveaccess to this experience at any time, without adopting, changing, orfixing your beliefs!Along the way, I share with you personalexperiences I've had that triggered this shift in me.With the toolsprovided in this book, you can have these shifts too.Discover unspoken limiting beliefsAchieve higher stages of consciousnessBreak free from the boundaries of egoUnderstand people in your life empathicallyExperience the pure joy of spiritual growthPraise for Banner's FrameShifting"For anyone serious about activating their inner brilliance, FrameShifting is a must read!"-Dr. David Breitbach, Founder of Bright Life U"David's journey has been eclectic, but his wit and courage have served him well and we are fortunate that he is willing to share what he has learned."-Dr. James Way, PhD Mentor, Walden University"Frameshifting describes a process to let go of your ego and discover your divine self."-Ken Maclean, author The Vibrational Universe"Whatever your personal development directions, you will benefit from Dave's journey and the insights he offers."-Robert J. Religion in the New Age: And Other Essays for the Spiritual Seeker ReviewI just finished reading "Religion in the New Age and Other Essays for the Spiritual Seeker," written by Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters), written 2008 and released in 2009.
I am offering this review simply because the book meant so much to me. It is isn't often, in my experience, that I find a book that can stir my rather sautern heart to soar with joy; and in a few pages stamp my intellectually-puffed ego into the ground and leave me begging for more.
Actually, I avoided this book for a little while, because of the title, which insinuates that the book is about religion, which I found rather off-putting. But alas; I was guilty of the "judging the book by the cover" syndrome. I read it, cover to cover and mauled the pages with my highlighter, notes, underlines, boxes and a word list in the back. In other words, I befriended this book.
Sri Kriyananda starts by clarifying what is happening, why things are changing so rapidly, and why it is that the human expression of community seems to be dividing itself almost like a cell. To simplify his astoundingly accessible interpretation of Swami Sri Yukteshwar Giri's book The Holy Science - we are moving into a planetary shift in which humanity is once again being exposed to a very positive change in which the general upliftment into hope and light are inevitable events. This change will, as usual in the course of events, engender two extreme camps, and an infinite number of in-betweens: There will be those who search for meaning in the old rules and the old way of doing things, and those who eagerly move with the fluid changes in which we find ourselves daily. Not only are the bases for these patterns explained for the average reader, but the practical meanings are also explained. In other words, knowledge is great and good, but what does it mean to me, now? Be prepared for the introduction of some Sanskrit terms, one of which the reader should know right away: Dwapara Yuga. This is the arc of time and spiritual development in which we find ourselves, collectively, at the beginning of now in 2009 (or, 309 Dwapara).
Swami Kriyananda's book addresses the effects of this dispensation on what we believe, how we can square what we seek spiritually with what religion (and religionists) have taught us. He explains that the current trends we can plainly see around us of people being Spiritual without belonging to a set religion is predictable and what it means. There is, after all, hope for those of us who are searching for a Truth in which we can live and move and love. Kriyananda gives concrete evidence and guidelines for learning to love God as God needs to be for us as individuals; then God in ourselves, and from this basis, how to reach out to others as individuals, groups, and the world. In Kriyananda's interpretation of the teachings brought by Sri Sri Paramhansa Yogananda (an Indian mystic who came to America in 1920 to teach the congruity of the original Christianity with the teachings of Sri Krishna), it is not only possible but highly desirable for a modern spiritual seeker to learn to live a life in which trust, love, high thinking and right living are evident in daily life, and not packed nicely away for Sundays or Sabbaths.
This book includes observations from decades of service and teaching on behalf of the late Yogananda. Swami Kriyananda's lifelong duties also included establishing communities around the world, in which people who live out these teachings actually live and thrive together. This is the ultimate test of the teachings, in my regard - that people and families can live out their ideals and values.
There are plentiful instructions and stories on money and how to handle it, how to get along with others, how to love others, and how to behave as a responsible adult. Kriyananda has analyzed business models, leadership, management styles and suggested ways that the order of management within organizations can keep pace with the changes in expectations of people in Dwapara Yuga within the business environment. At one point, the author went into great details in describing how a hierarchy can be ruined quite innocently and without meaning by ineffective leaders, creating workers that do not know to whom they should report, muddled lines of communication, wrecked human relations, and leadership that still must do all the work and is left wondering why. I had to put the book down and read this section again after I digested it, as I had lived this sad story. Years later, I still had no idea what happened - but I will tell you this: it is as if the author had been watching through a magic telescope the goings-on at a certain company in a high-rise building in downtown Seattle. I lived this story and he captured and analyzed it. There's no blame to be had or placed, but the explanation of how businesses can fail with fractured human relations was a joy to my heart.
In short, this book touches broadly on just about every area of life in which one could find himself engaged. And yet, I found very specific examples, stories, and facts to support the living out of the ideals affirmed by this author. I would highly recommend this book for those curious about how metaphysical influences, the teachings of Lord Krishna, business ethics, money handling, developing self-confidence and Original Christianity (as opposed to "churchianity") all come together to support a person who wishes to explore an authentic and congruent life.Religion in the New Age: And Other Essays for the Spiritual Seeker OverviewThis a collection of writings on a variety of topics by the renowned and prolific writer Swami Kriyananda. Essays range from a description of the New Age to insights on September 11. The fascinating essays touch on a wealth of subjects-spiritual, political, social, and personal-including Henry I, how to understand people, the importance of truthfulness, and much more.

Total Engagement: Using Games and Virtual Worlds to Change the Way People Work and Businesses Compete ReviewI just finished reading the book Total Engagement. It's rare that I read a book that has me wondering if the authors have caught a glimpse of an unexpected future, and that ten or twenty years from now people will be looking back and be saying: that was the book that spotted this crucial trend. Having lived in Silicon Valley for many years, I'm used to having that experience of being exposed to the future ahead of its time. This could be one of them.
The thesis is simple. Millions of people pay each month to participate in massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). I've tried them, and I have friends (and kids) that have been totally sucked into them. They punch a bunch of psychological tickets for humans: the game designers know what they're doing. The book discusses how this is done:
* an epic story line(we're saving the galaxy from the Crumlons)
* clear paths to advancement, with transparency about your skills and performance
* intensely meritocratic societies called guilds that work together in groups to accomplish major tasks
* strong social interactions with other people
* the ability to try, fail and try again rapidly, learning quickly
* the option to try on leadership roles
For many people, these games are where they come alive and truly experience their potential to solve problems, meet challenges and lead a team.
And then they go into the modern workplace, which is frequently as stultifying as these virtual worlds are thrilling. Fail!
Read and Reeves are convinced that at least some smart workplaces of the future are going to adapt some of the ways of the games to more fully engage their employees and become more effective as economic organizations. They don't have a magic formula for how to do this, but do invest a great deal of time analyzing what makes people inside these games tick and how those concepts transfer to the workplace.
Fascinating ideas, and well worth watching and thinking about.Total Engagement: Using Games and Virtual Worlds to Change the Way People Work and Businesses Compete OverviewEvery week, millions of people including many of your employees spend hours playing multi-player online games with a level of engagement they don t bring to work. These aren t just adolescent video games we re talking rich narrative quests with 3-D environments, cool avatars, and compelling goals and rewards. Imagine the value if you could transfer key ingredients of game design and the gamer excitement and focus that come with it to the office. What if your employees could solve customer problems, design new software, or configure better shipping routes working inside a game environment at work? This isn t just possible, say Byron Reeves and J. Leighton Read; it s inevitable. As global competition intensifies and employee productivity and engagement become more critical, the user experience provided by game technology offers a tantalizing solution for business. This is far more than a quaint metaphor for business and it s way beyond training tools. Implemented in the workplace, elements of games can solve a host of business problems with morale, communication, and alignment all while honing skills like data analysis, teamwork, recruitment, leadership, and more. Based on extensive hands-on research, case studies, and the authors entrepreneurial ventures, Total Engagement convincingly outlines how games will transform work, from repetitive call-center jobs to high-level teams who must collaborate with members dispersed around the globe. The authors show why you must begin building a game strategy now and offer practical guidelines for how to:--Select the game design features that can address your company s pain points --Use avatars to increase engagement and productivity--Employ virtual currencies to help employees set priorities, share resources, and meet goals--Implement participant-driven communication systems to facilitate team-building--Discover untapped leadership skills by shifting collaboration to game-like environments--Mitigate possible negative effects of game applications at work Authoritative and provocative, Total Engagement shows you how to become a player to reckon with as the gaming revolution transforms the workplace.

The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help--or Hurt--How You Lead ReviewWe all know the message we see with our eyes doesn't always match the message we hear with our ears. For example, think of the role of a parent hearing their child say they didn't break the lamp, but the child's body language says otherwise. In her new book, THE SILENT LANGUAGE OF LEADERS, Carol Kinsey Goman sums this up with this statement, "body language is in the eye of the beholder".

This very intriguing book defines the subtitle - how body language can help - or hurt - how you lead. The book begins asking the question, "What does leadership look like?" and answers it with a succinct analysis of the 1960 presidential debates (the first televised debates) where Americans viewed a very nervous, defensive and unprepared looking Richard Nixon compared to a very calm, poised and well prepared Jack Kennedy. People who saw the debates on television easily recognized Kennedy as the clear winner, however those who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon came out ahead.
After developing what leadership looks like, Chapter 2 looks at negotiations and the importance of "engagement", as well as the body language that accompanies engagement or the lack of it. People put on their best "poker-face" when entering negotiations, but Goman teaches other things to look for that a poker-face cannot hide. A big portion of this chapter also deals with how to deal with someone that is disengaged. The chapter concludes with a very valuable set of body language guidelines for negotiators.
Every leader has had to deal at one time or another with leading change. Change can be hard to accept as it forces people out of their comfort zones but chapter 3 teaches how leaders can use their body language to improve buy-in. Effectively creating buy-in revolves around building an emotional connection and developing the WIFFM (what's in it for me) answer.
Next we find a short but very informative chapter on collaboration. Since much of business today is via rich technology such as video conferencing, this can make things such as collaboration more of a challenge than through conventional face-to-face methods. Here you'll find tips useful for all types of collaboration building.
Chapter 6 looks at gender and body language. I found this chapter a fascinating study in gender differences in the workplace. This chapter explains the mars/venus effect in the boardroom.
Many of us today find ourselves working across cultural boundaries. Working With Global Teams bridges many of those boundaries. Here we look not only at cultural differences, but also similarities that span all cultures. The author identifies 7 universal emotional expressions that we will see no matter where we are.

In Chapter 8, Goman brings in a multicultural panel to discuss 8 specific questions. I was amazed at the variation of answers to the questions. These very simple business related questions are also very specific and could save the reader from a very embarrassing situation. "What does it mean to be "on-time" for a meeting?", sounds like a very simple question, but has very differing answers depending on the culture involved. This chapter concludes with a "cheat-sheet" of sorts with abbreviated answers to each of the 8 questions for the 12 countries/cultures of the panelists.

The book concludes with a chapter on the Nonverbal Future of Leadership. Here we learn how Baby boomers changed how business is conducted; how Gen Xers have transformed those rules of business and what we can expect in the way of changes brought on as Gen Yers make their way into the workforce.

This book is invaluable for taking leadership to a higher level.
The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help--or Hurt--How You Lead OverviewA guide for using body language to lead more effectively
Aspiring and seasoned leaders have been trained to manage their leadership communication in many important ways. And yet, all their efforts to communicate effectively can be derailed by even the smallest nonverbal gestures such as the way they sit in a business meeting, or stand at the podium at a speaking engagement. In The Silent Language of Leaders, Goman explains that personal space, physical gestures, posture, facial expressions, and eye contact communicate louder than words and, thus, can be used strategically to help leaders manage, motivate, lead global teams, and communicate clearly in the digital age.
Draws on compelling psychological and neuroscience research to show leaders how to adjust their body language for maximum effect.
Stands out as the only book to address specifically how leaders can use body language to increase their effectiveness
Goman, a respected management coach, is widely considered as the expert in body language issues in the workplace

The Silent Language of Leaders will show readers how to take advantage of the most underused skills in the leadership toolkit—nonverbal skills—to improve their credibility and stay ahead of the curve.

Teachings of Lord Chaitanya: The Golden Avatar Review"The Teachings of Lord Caitanya" by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami informs the reader of the theological tradition begun over 500 years ago in India by Sri Caitanya Saraswati. Some of the major themes discussed include anthropomorphism, polymorphism, and transcendant relationships. The book is structured as conversations with five individuals, reflecting the five modes of relationship defined by Caitanya: passive, servitude, friendship, parental care, and conjugal love.
The most prominent theme in the book is the promotion of anthropomorphism. A strong didactic tone is used to deride impersonalists, those who identify the impersonal Brahman as the Ultimate Reality. In this sense, Caitanya can be classified as a Hindu fundamentalist. In every case, literal meaning is preferred to metaphorical interpretation, and sophistication is castigated.
One problem in this presentation is the difficulty in translation to English. Not all of the Sanskrit terms are translated, leaving the reader with only a vague understanding. For example: "The personal form of Krsna can be divided into two: svayam-rupa and svayam prakasa. As far as His svayam-rupa (or pastime form) is concerned, it is in that form that He always remains in Vrndavana with the inhabitants of Vrndavana."(p 73) "There are also forms of Krsna which are a little different, and these are called tadekatma-rupa forms. These may be further divided into the vilasa and svamsa forms, which in turn have many different features and can be divided into prabhava and vaibhava forms." (p 75) Although sufficient examples are given to support the theological concept of polymorphism, some of the terms (such as prakasa and tadekatma) remain undefined.
One of the least comprehensible portions of the book is the discussion of the relationship between Sri Caitanya and Ramananda Raya. The basis of the depth of their embarrasingly emotional relationship is not clear, and the strange episode establishing Caitanya's divinity is not particularly convincing.
This book is pleasant to read. Each chapter flows nicely into the next. But the reader needs to be tolerant of the difficulties mentioned above in order to get the spiritual benefit of the teachings of one of the world's greatest mystics, Sri Caitanya Saraswati.
Mike AigenTeachings of Lord Chaitanya: The Golden Avatar OverviewTaking the role of His own devotee, Lord Sri Krsna appeared about five centuries ago in Bengal, India, and began a revolution in spiritual consciousness that has profoundly affected the lives of millions worldwide. His conversations with the great scholars, kings, and mystics of the day form the basis of Teachings of Lord Caitanya, which is a summary study of the dialogues recorded in His biography, Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, also available from the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. The extensive references in Teachings make it an invaluable compendium of devotional Indian philosophy.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
