Hinduism - An Introduction ReviewThis book gives one a brief but comprehensive overview of Hinduism. The work is a brief, 84 pages; but even so the information is presented extremely well. There are numerous pictures and illustrations that supplement the text.
My knowledge of Hinduism was mainly from reading books by Western authors. This book gives one a Hindu perspective. Although I was born in India I did not realize how scant my knowledge of Hinduism was. I verily suspect that many Hindus will find a nugget or two in this book.
The book format is more akin to the coffee table genere but this is one of those display books that is actually quite useful.
I do have a cavil. There is no index to speak of; so if you recall a name finding it in the book is quite a chore. However, all in all this is a bargain.
If you, like myself, just want to know the basics of Hinduism and Hindu culture, this is a great start.Hinduism - An Introduction OverviewHinduism is the oldest living religion in the world and is unique in its tolerance of other religions. Yet, because of its free thinking and lack of compulsion, educated Hindus of today know very little of their own religion and there is great need for a simple but comprehensive book on the subject.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism ReviewMy husband is an American, not committed to Christianity, his religion by birth. I am a Hindu, born and brought up in India. Despite the gulf of difference in our understanding of Hinduism, we both have learned tremendously from this book. The appeal of this book lies in the in-depth knowledge of the authoress, plus the reverent, and yet humorous style, in which it is written.
It's a widely known fact that the oldest religion on this planet is as vast as the sky itself. It cannot be contained in one scripture/book nor mastered in one lifetime. This book is THE CLOSEST to being an "appetizer" for Hinduism: a MUST-READ for anyone who wants to graduate to more advanced levels.
I have been looking for Hinduism-related books for several years, especially one that my children could read and understand without constant goading. I am very happy that I have finally found one.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism OverviewYou're no idiot, of course. You know Hinduism is a religion practiced worldwide, with philosophies that can offer enlightenment even to nonbelievers. However, its belief system is neither as simple nor as complex as many people think. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism will show you exactly how this religion is practiced and its relationship to Hindu culture. In this Complete Idiot's Guide, you get:*The principles behind basic Hindu beliefs, including karma, reincarnation, nonviolence, vegetarianism, and multiple manifestations of God.*The stories of such Hindu gods and goddesses as Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Sarasvati, and Kali.*Paths to enlightenment including karma yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, raja yoga, and tantra yoga.*The Hindu caste system, and the customary importance of women in its society.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Hindus: An Alternative History ReviewAs someone who has grown up in an academic environment, I would like to think of myself as catholic in my outlook; but this book by Wendy Doniger was just off.
To start with I maintain two gold standards of writers from the west
writing on India. The first is Heinrich Zimmer who wrote 'Myths and
Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization' which I have gone back to
repeatedly over the past 20 years. The other is the works of William
Dalrymple and the work of his that I cherish the most is one titled
'White Mughals'.
The former is a scholar who has sought to deeply understand Indian culture and the myths it has evolved and the latter is a fine writer first and foremost with a keen eye and love for all things Indian.
But what really makes their writings classic that wants me to go back
to them repeatedly is their generosity of spirit and largeness of
heart. They do not shy away from the warts, but you know what is
driving them to research and write their material is a genuine desire
to understand and the joy of discovery.
That brings me to Ms Doniger. When I came upon the book after reading a review of it in the NY Times, I rubbed my hands in glee. Ah, here is a book I thought to myself, that is going to present new and important insights, from a seasoned philologist, that is going to enhance
one's knowledge of Indian culture in new and important ways (good or bad - no matter).
What Wendy Doniger does do is that she applies all the tools and techniques and filters of 20th and 21st century social and cultural analysis to bear upon circa 500 BC India and then proceeds to sit in judgment. But it turns out that no wart is unworthy of examination and it is warts that are examined!
As an example, I opened the chapter on the Upanishads with a degree of anticipation hoping that a sociological context to the content of the Upanishads is going to present new insights. To one's great disappointment there is nothing on the sheer poetry of the verse or the metaphysics therein. Rather the good professor takes one or two of the Upanishads and
proceeds to see male chauvinism and cruelty at every turn.
Really, that's what she got out of the Upanishads? For example how about the Ananda Valli Kanda of the Taittiriya Upanishad - which defines
happiness. Not a word on that. How about the psychological complexity unveiled in the Mandukya Upanishad? Not a word on that. As someone who has lapped up all sorts of commentaries on the Upanishads for many years now (all takes welcome), this one was astonishing primarily for its wholly missing the point!
Doniger's pettiness contrasts with the generosity of spirit I have
mentioned above. Two examples here. She has comments to make on the
Ramayana and the Mahabharatha. She writes, introducing them,
'considered by some as epics'. Really? Only some people consider these epics? I am all open and eager for scholarly analysis of any subject matter - but throw us a bone here (more on dogs later...!) - give the Indians their epics!
Another example in the same vein. She reference Shankara later in the
book and while describing him as the founder of the Shankara Matts
/Schools. She in paretheses writes 'is said to have founded'. Again,
really? If the Professor doubts that Shankara founded the Matts, I am
very interested in knowing about this! Even if it is vague conjecture, tell me more - I fully agree that Indian history can be vague, so please throw some light. But instead of exploring the justifiable debate or controversy that exists, she just has a throw away line, for apparently no reason.
The attitude that comes through is one of hostility, contempt and
shoddy writing. And the dogs. There are several hundred references to Indian
view of dogs. Whats with that? I am a pet owner myself and
love my dog. But this was so discordant that I was just not getting it.
There is also a chapter on Hindus in America. This section is so superficial that it is laughable. It feels like the author has browsed a couple of websites and found that enough to channel her points of view.
A final note on sex. A three thousand year old mature civilization has seen a lot in its ebbs and flows and the land of the Kama Sutra is
going to have its share of views. But Doniger sees hostile,
vituperative sexual mores at every turn, even when such an
interpretation is not warranted.
A metaphor I want to use for Wendy Doniger is the following. When I
was a kid, visiting my grandmother in Hyderabad, India, I would love
going to the 'sugar cane stand'. There the sugar cane wallah would
take the sugar cane stems and crush them through two rollers and
collect the juice into a cup. On a sunny summer day it was the best
drink ever. Then all the crushed pith would go into a rubbish pile on
the ground.
Heinrich Zimmer and William Dalrymple get to the sugar cane juice.
Wendy Doniger rakes about in the sugar cane pith with no concept of
what the juice is all about.
Does this mean that I do not recommend you read this book. Not at all. I am not one to shy away from a variety of perspectives or debate. So please do pick it up from the library and give it a glance. Just don't expect to walk away from it with new insights other than the fact that the author has an agenda and Indian culture happens to serve it in this case.
The Hindus: An Alternative History OverviewFrom one of the world's foremost scholars on Hinduism, a vivid reinterpretation of its history An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets—karma, dharma, to name just two—arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism—its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness—lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers—many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts—have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.

Am I A Hindu The Hinduism Primer ReviewReading Hindu philosophical books is my hobby and I never ever read a book like this. This may be the only book in the market discussing about Hinduism as the culture of India not as an organized religion. This book is very very simple without too many Sanskrit words and it can be even read by a 12 year old. It deals with almost all aspects of Hinduism. It is in a Question and Answer fomat between a father and son and as such it is spelbounding. Book is filled with very descriptive flow charts on "end of the world"; "caste system", "world religions"; "Hindu scriptures"; etc and I for one will highly recommend this book for every one on earth. I did not see any kind of bias in this book like the "reader from Calcutta" is talking about.. In the chapter Untochables [page-250], author describes caste system as a "curse on Hinduism" and quotes a great Indian Untouchable leader Ambedkar who said: "To the untouchables, Hinduism is a veritable chamber of horrors" . There is no cover up of animal sacrifice in Hinduism in this book. On the contarary, this book discusses about animal sacrifice in the chapter "The Cow & Hindus". I am amazed to see this book even subjects such as Tantra, Kama Sutra and erotic sex, which Hindu authors normally do not discuss in their books. Surprisingly, book repeatedly states that "Hinduism has no monopoly on Truth & God" and at the end ask the reader even to read books such as Holy Bible & Holy Koran in their search after truth. So I highly recommend this book for anyone out there who is in search of truth.Am I A Hindu The Hinduism Primer OverviewThis gem of a book encapsulates the esoteric wisdom of one of humanity's oldest religions in an easy-to-understand conversational format. Covering the entire sweep of Hindu belief, answering questions Westerners ask about Hindu practice (like what exactly is the law of Karma and reincarnation? why do Hindu women wear a red dot on their forehead? and why do Hindus worship so many Gods?) answering life's most enduring questionshas been hailed as a much-needed primer to this major religion.

An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hinduism (Introduction to Religion) ReviewThis book is a perfect introduction to one of the most popular and important Hindu sects in India and, most importantly, in the United States.
If you'd like to read a scholarly history of this increasingly important and powerful Hindu revivalist organization, this is your book. What the Mormons are to the United States, the Swaminarayans are to India (and Gujaratis in particular). Keep in mind that this book is not exclusively a history of BAPS, the largest and most prominent of Swaminarayan denominations.
Readers should also know that the book is generally sympathetic rather than critical in tone, which is entirely appropriate. An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hinduism (Introduction to Religion) OverviewThis book is a comprehensive study of a modern form of Hinduism that is growing in the place of its birth in the Indian state of Gujarat and among Indian immigrants in East Africa, Great Britain, and the United States. It is the most prominent form of transnational Hinduism because it creates networks that define and preserve ethnic and religious identity in the modern context of rapid mobility and communication. Founded by Swaminarayan (1781-1830), a religious reformer in a time of great social and political change in Gujarat, Swaminarayan Hinduism expounds a path of devotion to Swaminarayan as the final, perfect manifestation of God. Professor Williams provides a detailed introduction to the history, theology, discipline, and ritual of this important form of Hinduism.

Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love ReviewMessages from Jesus is written by a woman I personally know -- a healer who has been able to see and converse with Jesus since childhood. Despite her reticence about the name, Saint Ta, Jesus told her to use it (see Chapter One). He said she was to write books of spiritual truth for others, sharing her experiences and His words of hope for humanity.
Throughout the book, Jesus reminds us that "God is a loving God" and that the Old Testament conception of a vengeful, punishing God is erroneous. Many Christians and Jews today are moving away from the belief that God is judgmental and vengeful. It is always disturbing to have one's beliefs challenged, but Jesus wants us to realize that God is a God of love and mercy, not of condemnation and punishment. He makes it clear throughout the book that we, not God, are the ones who judge each other and ourselves, and delve out punishment.
Jesus discusses life and death, in response to Saint Ta's question about those who have or perform abortions. He says: "Life is precious, before war and after war. Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war? Within your dualistic world, you perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as you perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Therefore, I simply ask that whatever you do, do it with love." (p. 265) Jesus is making the point that, just as many believe war is justified in certain circumstances, so also many believe abortion is justified in certain circumstances. He began His response to Saint Ta's question by telling us "There are many individual situations that warrant or censure abortion." He also states that the issues are complicated and unfathomable from our human perspective, the soul cannot die, and "It is not for me nor you to judge." Therefore, He simply asks: "whatever you do, do it with love."
Jesus does not take sides for or against war or abortion. When he says, "Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war?", Jesus is not suggesting that we should or should not condemn these leaders; He is simply pointing out that, in fact, many of us do not condemn them. He is showing us that, within our dualistic world, many perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as many perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Just as many do not condemn those who send our youth to die in war, so also many do not condemn those who perform abortions. Jesus' words often have to be carefully read and contemplated in order to comprehend His meaning.
At the beginning of the chapter "War", Jesus says, "Thou shalt not kill. War, among other things, is cause and effect, resulting from and in karmic debt. Karmic experiences are destined to happen over and over, unless the chains of karma are broken and love reigns. The commandment, `Thou shalt not kill,' along with love, nonviolence and forgiveness, would rid the earth of this karma, and worldwide peace would be maintained for generations to come." (p. 105) Throughout the book, we are reminded not to think of one kind of person as better or worse than another. By not judging and condemning others, by forgiveness, and by living in love, we unlock the door to spiritual awareness and find heaven on earth.
On page 99, Saint Ta talks about the life in plants, as well as in animals, and mentions that some people think we shouldn't eat animals. Jesus says, "People are unique and from many nationalities, each originally created for and born in their own environment. Now that you can travel from one area to another and live in areas far from your origins, you may not be receiving what you need from your new environment. Seriously think about the food source from the area where you were born and the genealogy of your family. It was the vibration of that area that penetrated into your consciousness....It is the shared vibration with others within that area that draws them back. The best foods for you are grown in and of the environment of your origin." It is important to know that our genetic inheritance and the vibration of the area we were born in determine which foods are best for us.
Messages from Jesus is full of advice for our times, as well as timeless teachings and truths for all of us to live by. Jesus discusses the environment, terrorism, love, oneness, reincarnation, and many other important matters that concern us all. The author has performed a great service by recording Jesus' words and sharing her experiences with the Master.
Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love OverviewMessages from Jesus A Dialogue of Love"Imagine listening to an interview of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of us would be sitting there just praying that the host would delve into the issues that are near and dear to us. In her book, Messages from Jesus - A Dialogue of Love, Mary Ann Johnston shares with the world hours of conversation she had with the One known as The Christ."Chances are, if you have a question for Him, the answer lies in these pages, as the essence of the spiritual life, modern religion, world affairs, and disasters are all dealt with rather comprehensively."Nothing that I or the author could say will convince anyone skeptical of these pages' origin about their authenticity. But then again, only personal conviction will allow any scripture to be thought of as veritable. I encourage you to delve into this work and find out for yourself if Truth is present here. My guess is, regardless of what you determine, you won't skip a page."- Fred Stella, President, Interfaith Dialogue Association and Host of Common Threads: An Interfaith Dialogue, heard weekly on WGVU Radio, Grand Rapids, Michigan

The Jesus Mystery ReviewThe author does an excellent job in discussing the "Lost Years" in the life of Jesus, which include the years 12-30, and are not discussed in the New Testament (the Bible makes reference to Jesus only as a youth, and then as an adult). The Book discusses why Jesus, as a youth, left his home to migrate eastward to learn about the Vedic teachings which were present in India, Nepal and Tibet, and then later spread those teachings which he learned there to the West. Although this book may present an extreme controversy for an Occidental, the Author truly conveys her deep love and respect for Lord Jesus Christ. After reading this book, one should go back and read the Sermon on the Mount, and then you can truly see the uniformity (rather than the separation) between Chistianity and Hinduism. The Jesus Mystery Overview

The Origins of Evil in Hindu Mythology (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions) ReviewVery interesting. Salvation is reversed: men try to save the gods. Both Indra and Shiva must come down to earth to expiate their sin and thus regain lifeblood. Hindu gods removed the impurity of death from themselves, and gave it to the men. This was the reason behind the fall of man. Maybe this portrays the background story of what underwent in the garden of Eden. This could give some insight into the origins of evil. It is a full-scale scholarly work. The Origins of Evil in Hindu Mythology (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions) Overview

The Asian Jesus ReviewNine selected images from Asian literature, culture and religion can offer new insights into Jesus, and THE ASIAN JESUS offers a different kind of interpretation perfect for understanding both differing cultural perceptions and ideas of Jesus. Jesus has been depicted, for example, as guru, satyagrahi, avatar and even a danger: Biblical quotes and spiritual reflection blend in a fine guide perfect for any serious Christian library; especially important for those seeking a cross-cultural representation of Jesus. The Asian Jesus OverviewIn beginning this book, Michael Amaladoss states that images are important in helping us grasp who Jesus was and is. Following that insight, he unfolds the way in which nine images from Asian literature, culture, and religion open new horizons on the Founder of Christianity. The images are: Sage, Way, Guru, Satyagrahi (witness to truth), Avatar (incarnation of the divine), Servant, Compassionate One, Dancer, and Pilgrim.Amaladoss helps us read the New Testament with new eyes. The Perfect Tradition (The Perfect Knowledge Series) ReviewThis volume includes two seminal communications from Avatar Adi Da Samraj regarding the unique nature of his Reality-Teaching and Revelation to humankind. In updated format, these appear in the expanded Gnosticon The Gnosticon publication.
The essay "God-Talk, Real-God-Realization, Most Perfect Divine Self-Awakening, and The Seven Possible Stages of Life" is a comprehensive overview of mankind's historical religious, spiritual, transcendental and divine revelations to humankind. Profound tools for understanding, discerning the differences between, and making sense of this vast topic are given, along with Adi Da Samraj's very direct communication about the unique nature of the Seventh Stage of Life Reality-Way of Adidam. If you study comparative religion, if you wonder about the apparent differences between (and yet intuit the unity of) religions, then this essay is a root-profundity which will greatly inform your understanding.
The essay "I Am The Divine Avataric Gift of The Bright--And of The Thumbs That Reveals It" is an esoteric communication about Adi Da Samraj's own spiritual condition and realization, which he calls The "Bright", the egoless Reality-Condition that Adi Da Samraj brought into this world via conscious birth. This communication offers the reader a profound, esoteric, unique, mysterious, and egolessly profound vision of the nature, condition, state, and purpose of Adi Da Samraj's own spiritual work, teaching, and presence.
This book is part of a much greater communication by Adi Da Samraj given in The Gnosticon, but stands alone in its own inherent verity and wisdom, a communication about the nature of egoless Reality and the necessary process of outgrowing of duality that is required for most ultimate Reality-Understanding and Reality-Enlightenment.
A profound gift to every wisdom-moved heart. The Perfect Tradition (The Perfect Knowledge Series) OverviewIn 1980, two devotees of Adi Da visited the Tibetan master Chogyam Trungpa and showed him video footage of Adi Da. After the presentation, Chogyam Trungpa expressed his respect for the authenticity of Adi Da, and said: It is tremendously difficult to begin a new tradition. Adi Da is working to establish the Way of Perfect Knowledge (or Way of Adidam) as a new tradition a total culture of life and practice that includes and serves the process of Realization from the beginner s level to the ultimate stages, or Perfect Practice . The Way of Adidam combines and transcends different orientations represented in Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. Adi Da calls for a dual sensitivity a sensitivity to what is merely conditional and passing, on the one hand, and to what is non-conditional, transcendental and Divine, on the other. In this first book of the Perfect Knowledge series Adi Da makes clear why the Way of Adidam is a final revelation, a summery of all traditions. He does not merely say this to be believed, it is to be found out by all those interested. "From time to time in human history, Great Sages have appeared, who have, to one degree or another, agreed to instruct devotees. A truly Great Sage speaks as the Very Condition, the Radiant Ocean of Being, That is Reality. Adi Da Samraj, from the beginning of his lifetime, has shown the signs of such a one. The teaching of Adi Da Samraj is a great gift to all who need to understand the human event from the viewpoint of Ultimate Truth, beyond the winds of doctrine and the competing philosophies that have made and unmade the cultures of humankind." From the Introduction by Carolyn Lee, PhD

Perfect Philosophy ReviewAdi Da gives a radical and profound description of the true nature of the Divine Reality. He says that the Divine is the substance of all that arises, not the "cause" of anything. At the end of the video you will see a short excerpt from a formal Darshan occasion.
Perfect Philosophy OverviewIn this book, Adi Da radicalizes the question of knowledge and its inherent limits, and offers a way of life that originates and operates beyond those limits. Adi Da pushes us far beyond the boundaries the consideration of modern philosophers. What is at stake are the same issues: What is reality? In this book, Adi Da radicalizes the question of knowledge and its inherent limits, and offers a way of life that originates and operates beyond those limits. Adi Da pushes us far beyond the boundaries the consideration of modern philosophers. What is at stake are the same issues: What is reality? What is consciousness? What is self? What is the world? What can we know? Like Wittgenstein, Adi Da speaks with mathematical exactness and rigor, offering answers that are not really answers, but pointers to a radical limit that must be understood and transcended.Adi Da offers the reader a "solution"to the "problem" of life by offering a way that is radically free from the fundamental "point of view". He says that as soon as "point of view" is assumed at the root of one's being, problemarises and then the great search for a "solution"begins. This great search is what has generated all the schools and traditions of"philosophy". The paradox is therefore that "Perfect Philosophy" is not a process in mind, it has no ideas. So listen carefully and you might hear the wordless and silent paradox of the Divine Itself, prior to all reasons, beliefs and mere ideas.

Bhagavad Gita: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Illuminations) ReviewIn my experience Kendra Crossen Burroughs is one of the best editors in the field of Eastern spiritual literature and texts. As well as working freelance, she has been a long-term editor on the staff of Shambhala Publications, and I was happy to have her involved in a book that I had published by Shambhala, although not a book in Eastern thought.
I was very excited when I heard that Kendra was doing this book for Skylight Paths, since the Gita has been one of my, and many other people's favorite and most important spiritual sources, and I eagerly looked forward to its appearance. If I wasn't one of the first people in the world to buy a copy, at least I was one of the first on my block.
I was not disappointed. If I was, I would have never written this review. A blurb on the cover by renowned authority, Ken Wilber, says, "The very best Gita for first time readers." This is one of the rare occasions when a blurb is absolutely true. But, the further truth is that Burroughs's annotations make this a book for the experienced reader of the Gita as well. Burroughs has consulted and used over twenty other translations in her annotations to this particular translation that she uses, the 1935 one by Shri Purohit Swami, and this scholarship, plus Burroughs' own personal experience, make this a valuable book for a reader of any degree of experience.
Besides Burroughs' own brilliant annotations, Skylight has done an innovative and equally brilliant job of format, where the annotations are on one page, and the reference text is on the facing page, so that the reader has the annotations right at hand as s/he reads, and does not have to thumb through to the back of the book or chapter to look them up. The only problem that I encountered with this was my own idiosyncratic one of whether to read the text page through and then turn to the annotations alongside it, or read each annotation as it is referred to in the text. I never completely settled this for myself. Other readers may want to read the annotation page first, and then read the facing page of the Gita text.
As Burroughs notes, the Purohit translation is a good first time one, because he purposely set out to eliminate all foreign words of the Indian Sanskrit language, and uses only terms familiar to the Western, English speaking reader. For myself, however, who is not a newcomer to Eastern thought (though certainly not a Gita scholar at all), I am less happy with this choice. I want to know what the key Sanskrit terms are in the Gita text, which have a meaning and connotation that is at least somewhat different than the familiar English terms used. For example, in the famous and central verses (Ch 4: 7-8) where Krishna tells his disciple Arjuna about who he is and the reason for his periodic appearance in human history, the Purohit text has it, "To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked, and to establish the kingdom of God, I am reborn from age to age." The very Christian phrase "the kingdom of God," could easily throw off the reader. The Sanskrit actually says, "for the establishment of dharma," and thus it connects with the whole Indian sense of truth and untruth (dharma and adharma), more abstract and general, and later carried with such powerful effect into Buddhism. In 1935 "the Kingdom of God" might have worked better, but in our time, dharma says more, and more accurately to many of us. However, Burroughs' annotations corrects or overcomes a lot of these problems (but not in this case). So, where the Purohit text says (Ch 6: 23) that meditation "should be practiced with determination and with a heart which refuses to be depressed," Burroughs explains that the actual Sanskrit term is "chetas, a synonym for chitta (mind). In Indian philosophy , 'heart' is considered an aspect of mind, concerned with intuitive understanding and valuation." Gems like this of elucidation and clarification occur throughout the annotation pages facing the text.
What reading this edition of the Gita has prompted me to do, in part related to my issue with the Purohit translation, is to now have three Gita's that I carry side by side, and compare them as I read in it--this one, Prabhavananda/Isherwood, and Nikhilananda's. Burroughs would be happy with this effect on me of her edition, and in this case would consider her work a success. And these three, are one more than the two translations of the Bible that I have on hand.Bhagavad Gita: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Illuminations) OverviewAn ancient classic that can become a companion for your own spiritual journey.Millions of people turn daily to India's most beloved holy book, the Bhagavad Gita ("Song of the Lord"), to instruct their spiritual practice. A Hindu classic, it has universal appeal for people of all faith traditions who turn to its inspirational support in the struggles of life, its consolation in times of grief, and its deeply moving promise of God's love and guidance.Composed in Sanskrit verse thousands of years ago, this timeless text tells the story of a distraught warrior on the verge of battle and the compassionate counsel he receives from Krishna-God in human form. In just seven hundred lines, the Gita presents concise teachings on such topics as the immortality of the soul, meditation and yoga, worship and sacrifice, the ideal of selfless action, and the oneness of all life in the Divine. Now you can read and understand the Gita with no previous knowledge of Hinduism required. This SkyLight Illuminations edition offers insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that explains references and philosophical terms; shares the inspiring interpretations of famous spiritual teachers; and addresses questions such as the inner meaning of India's caste system and why this sublime discourse on inner peace is set against the background of a violent civil war.Shri Purohit Swami (1882-1941) was an Indian monk who traveled to the West in 1930 to teach the wisdom of Hinduism. In addition to the Bhagavad Gita, he translated The Ten Principal Upanishads (in collaboration with the poet William Butler Yeats).Kendra Crossen Burroughs is a book editor whose specialty is religions of the East and West. She compiled The Essential Ken Wilber and Entering the Tao: Master Ni's Guidance for Self-Cultivation. A long-time student of the Bhagavad Gita, she lives in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Hindu Way of Awakening : Its Revelation, Its Symbols ReviewIf one wants to understand the basic philosophy of Hinduism and the other religions, this book is a MUST have. Each page of this book is filled with divine and impartial wisdom. Kriyananda also gives the reader one of the most clearest definitions of an "Avatar". For example, he states that Christ had to work his way up towards perfection (just like all of us) and once attaining full liberation, Jesus chose to come back into the physical universe as a "divine incarnation of God'. Nowhere is this concept stated more clearly. Other books only gives a brief definition of an "Avatar".
Kriyananda has also been able to strictly keep within the central themes of this book. He only allows his ideas to sidetrack a bit from the main theme and quickly brings the reader back to the core of the topic. The intellectual discipline by kriyananda is commendable. If J.Donald Walters was to dedicate his life to philosophy (instead of monkhood), he would definitely become one of the greatest intellectual giants of our time. His ideas would shake the very core of fundamentalist religious beliefs, creating uproar and praises alike.
But Mankind is not ready yet to appreciate Kriyananda's writings. By his own intellectual and spiritual insights through his books, he has earned the ultimate blessings of his (and mine) Guru - Paramhansa Yogananda. This particular book will enable the reader (and especially orthodox SRF members) to appreciate more deeply the work of Ananda society. This organization actually complements and NOT act like a rival to Self-Realization Fellowship. I would also like to recommend other books written by the same author. The Hindu Way of Awakening : Its Revelation, Its Symbols OverviewThis book is delightful reading for anyone interested in spirituality and the deeper meanings ofreligion. A master of word imagery, Swami Kriyananda brings order to the seeming chaos ofsymbols and deities in Hinduism. This book reveals the underlying teachings from which thesymbols arise, the truths inherent in all religions, and their essential purpose the direct innerexperience of God. Divided into two sections of ten chapters each, the author leads the reader toclarity as can be done only by someone who has achieved that clarity himself.

The Graceful Guru: Hindu Female Gurus in India and the United States ReviewThis book is a blessing to those interested in a scholarly yet exciting study on several influential Modern Female Gurus from India and their impact in both India and The US. This book has a well written and comprehensive approach to this subject, and is a wonderful academic contribution to the field of South Asian studies and Women's Studies. WOW! Thank You! JAI MA!
Aum Amriteshvaryai Namah! The Graceful Guru: Hindu Female Gurus in India and the United States OverviewA distinctive aspect of Hindu devotion is the veneration of a human guru, who is not only an exemplar and a teacher but is also understood to be an embodiment of the divine. Historically, the role of guru in the public domain has been exclusive to men. The new visibility of female gurus in India and the U.S. today, and indeed across the globe, has inspired this first-ever scholarly study of the origins, variety, and worldwide popularity of Hindu female gurus. In the Introduction, Karen Pechilis examines the historical emergence of Hindu female gurus with reference to the Hindu philosophy of the self, women spiritual exemplars as wives and saints, Tantric worship of the Goddess, and the internationalization of gurus in the U.S. in the twentieth century. Nine essays profile specific female gurus, presenting biographies of these remarkable women while highlighting overarching issues and themes concerning women's status as religious leaders; these themes are nuanced in the afterword to the volume. The essays explore how Hindu female gurus embody grace in both senses--as a feminine ideal and an attribute of the divine-and argue that their status as leaders is grounded in their negotiation of these two types of grace. This book provides biographical profiles of the following female gurus plus sensitive scholarly analysis of their spiritual paths:Ammachi, Anandamayi Ma, Gauri Ma, Gurumayi, Jayashri Ma, Karunamayi Ma, Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati, Mother Meera, Shree Maa and Sita Devi.

Religion and Reality (The Perfect Knowledge Series) ReviewThere is so much spoken about conventional religion these days in terms of "culture wars" and the politics of the times. Yet who has actually entered into the religious process to the depth degree of actual participatory knowledge (gnosis) of the reality-truth of indivisible unity that religion (universally) points to?
This book is subtitled: True Religion Is Not Belief in Any God-Idea but the Direct Experiential Realization of Reality Itself
The subtitle directly addresses a fundamental theme of this book, which is that belief is insufficient altogether for true religion. And as a parallel truth, doubt is insufficient as well, in terms of actually dealing the actual root-matters of truth itself. This is a radical vision and voice, a voice of beyond doubt and belief, a voice of reality, of indivisibile indestructible self-evident oneness, of prior unity, of sanity, of heart-awakened consciousness. Of the "binding again" that is the very meaning of the word "religion".
Avatar Adi Da Samraj stands out as a uniquely authoritative voice of wisdom-sanity by virtue of his own spiritual and transcendental divine realization of the very condition that is Reality Itself. There is no argument for belief, or for historical propositions of partial "truth", but rather a vast and complex arguement pointing beings to the necessarily experiential ordeal of truth-discovery that is the universal religious process. A process that Adi Da Samraj clearly reveals is an ego-transcending process, since the ego-act of separateness, of the dualistic enactment of "separate self" and "objective world" is the very act of "sin" which separates one from the Living Divine egoless Reality and Truth which is the Only of religion's all.
This is a magnificent, sane, bright, inspirational, and clear guide to every human being on the path of deepening religious practice, faith, understanding, and aspiration. A beacon and jewel, and a clarifying voice to a right and universally sane understanding of religion as a whole.
So the great tradition of religion and spirituality, full of propositions and ideas, practices and observances, and ancient depth is discussed at great depth. The matters of Western versus Eastern religion, of exoteric versus esoteric religion, of believe versus Realization, of the process of growing beyond superficial understanding into depth, all of this is deeply probed and sanely considered. And wisdom is the intrinsic communication here, the wisdom of the unitive depth-heart undertanding of religion itself, as a process, a universal process of Reality Realization.
In order to help clarify the difference between the various proposals about "God", Adi Da Samraj uses the term Real (Acausal) God as a means to help readers understand directly the egoless nature of Real God versus the ego-based ideas about "God" that can be used for ego based separative purpose, individually or in collective patterns. The Essay: Real (Acausal) God Is The Deep of the World is a beautiful explication on the sacred, profound, universal, egoless, indivisible, and unity-of-all-nature of Truth, Reality, and Real God.
Involved in a study of religion at depth?
Read this book.Religion and Reality (The Perfect Knowledge Series) Overview"Religion is 'cult' ".Adi Da Samraj once opened an essay with this provocative statement. By definition, He went on to explain, religion is asacralizedsystem of philosophical and practical observances within the domain of time and space. Because it necessarily consists of defined beliefs and rituals, dependent on the existence of the concrete world in which it appears, he points out the self-evident fact that no religion can ever, in and of itself, be equal to Truth or Reality. Reality Itself is always senior to the cults of humankind. So what is the right and true relationship between religion and Reality? "Religion and Reality" presents Adi Da's answer to that question. In some ways, to most deeply receive the communication in this book is to be loosed from centuries of misunderstanding and to find the freedom toconsiderthe real purpose of the world and the nature of Real God as Reality Itself. Who would not be interested in such a proposal?Adi Da Samraj: "True religion is not about the 'me' -person who participates in religion. Rather, true religion is about the Divine with Which any individual is re-associating, or re-uniting. True religion is, ultimately, about discovering Oneness with the Divine Self-Condition to be Always Already the Case." "The writings of Adi Da Samraj are the most doctrinally thorough, the most philosophically sophisticated, the most culturally challenging, and the most creatively original literature on radical nonduality currently available in the English language".Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religious Studies, Rice University;Author, Kali s Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna

Nature's Ancient Religion: Orisha Worship & Ifa ReviewBooks written by Lukumi Babakawos are a rare event but this book makes for an even rarer event due to the fact that the author's first language is English. The great irony is that the author's great paternal grandfather was Head of the Orange Order in Northern Ireland!
This book is informative in a variety of ways but principally in the semi autobiographical manner that it discusses the stages of evolution from the author as a disinterested Aleyo to his initiation, as a Babalawo. The basics of Orisha worship are covered in a competent and interesting manner that is good for beginners.
Along the way we get glimpses into the current state of affairs in Cuba leading up to his initiations. As a "Yuma" (Virtually expatriate American living in Cuba), he is writing with a degree of inside knowledge into the current state of affairs that many expatriate Cubans no longer have access to. The author is at pains to state throughout that he is a new Babalawo that is repeating aspects of his elder's teachings but makes a decent effort to introduce the orisha from a standpoint that only a Babalawo can truly make. Unfortunately here lies my only criticism is that I disagree with the gender assigned to certain orisha such as Odudua for example, but if this agrees with the teaching of his house then so be it. The essence of the underlying message in the Pataki quoted, for me remains intact.
The final chapter is a frank discussion on the popular current books available in the USA on the religion.
Nature's Ancient Religion: Orisha Worship & Ifa Overview6/1/2011 # 3 "Orisha" book on Amazon & # 7 "IFA" book on AmazonNature's Ancient Religion is 50% autobiography of the author's spiritual journey from cynic to Babalawo with Wanaldo. His rank in the world's seventh largest religion (175,000,000) is on par with a Catholic Arch Bishop. The author describes each step or level of his rise in Havana, Cuba. Readers are treated to the unique flavor of the forbidden island too.50% is authoritative narrative of religions including: Catholicism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, indigenous and African. Anthropology is discussed including the 2007 Haplogroup mapping that is so important . Fresh pataki( legends) are introduced, shrines honoring the Orishas are described. Core concepts of Ashe (Nature's energy), Odu, Ancestors, Dead, dreams and divination are probed and explained. The increasing role of women is discussed as well as racial tensions.Nature's Ancient Religion has 22 pages of Orisha worship book reviews, a glossary, index and the illustrations of Victorio Evelio Cué Villate.

The Yoga of Jesus: Understanding the Hidden Teachings of the Gospels ReviewThis book captures Paramanhansa Yogananda's spoken words and writings and puts them into clear focus in one volume on the much misunderstood teachings of Jesus. This new book "The Yoga Of Jesus" is a hundred years in the making. The editors and publishers do a great job of putting Yogananda's thoughts in a logical order so that it reveals a much deeper message--one that shows the hidden yoga of the gospels.
This book will awaken some people to new ideas while others may just have their inner truth reaffirmed. The book is a significant spiritual work and will remain a best seller (As does his classic "The Autobiography of a Yogi") for decades if not centuries.
There is even a chapter devoted to the missing years of Christ's life, which were spent in India according to Yogananda. The references and footnotes help build strong support for what this book is revealing about the life and teachings of Jesus.
The book is an eye opener for non-yogis and a blissful confirmation of truth from those who follow the teachings of Yogananda. This is one of his best books. I would suggest reading this book along with "The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You" - which blazed huge new spiritual roads just a few years ago.
This book, as with many of Yogananda's books, shows parallels between the teachings of all the great Christian saints, mystics and other enlightened founders of spiritual thought. This book should help unify and promote inter-faith understanding for those with open minds and hearts.
This book is well worth adding to your spiritual library. It can be read in a full afternoon but it may take a lifetime or longer to full grasp all the truth that is within its pages. The book is best read slowly while allowing time to ponder and digest the meaning of what is read. There is so much wisdom and love within these pages. This book receives my highest possible personal recommendation. This is a MUST READ BOOK!The Yoga of Jesus: Understanding the Hidden Teachings of the Gospels OverviewIn this remarkable book, Paramahansa Yogananda reveals the hidden yoga of the Gospels and confirms that Jesus, like the ancient sages and masters of the East, not only knew yoga but taught this universal science of God-realization to his closest disciples. Compiled from the author's highly praised two-volume work, The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You, this insightful and compact book transcends the centuries of dogma and misunderstanding that have obscured the original teachings of Jesus, showing that he taught a unifying path by which seekers of all faiths can enter the kingdom of God. Topics include: •The lost years of Jesus in India •The ancient science of meditation: how to become a Christ •The true meaning of baptism.

Hinduism For Dummies (For Dummies (Religion & Spirituality)) ReviewI married into a wonderful family and have collected a half a dozen versions of the Gita, one of the Upanishads and some books focused on different aspects of the avatars and books describing the stories of the deities and.... I still felt pretty lost much of the time.
This book gives a nice, comprehensive outline to an extraordinarily complex religion. It explains the difference between the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Vedas. It offers the key teaching of spiritual leaders.
More importantly to my in-laws... it has done so with respect for the traditions, teaching and beliefs of those that practice hinduism.
I have a feeling I will read this a couple more times and then go back and work my way through the Gita once more. I have a feeling it will be a much richer experience with the base of knowledge underneath it all.Hinduism For Dummies (For Dummies (Religion & Spirituality)) OverviewYour hands-on guide to one of the world's major religions
