Lord of the Air: Tales of a Modern Antichrist ReviewI am up to page 152 of Lord of the Air. This book is intelligently written. Tal Brooke's eye witness account reveals his personal spiritual journey into the world of Sai Baba and all the things that go with that, Hindu meditation, avatars, sanskrit, vedic prayers, occultic secrets, astrology, and much more. I am certain his search for truth comes true at the end of the book.Lord of the Air: Tales of a Modern Antichrist OverviewThe Currently out-of-print Lord of The Air, is an abridged version of the Indian Bestseller, Avatar of Night, which is to be released in December of 1999. This will be the most complete version ever published, with 180 photographs and graphics.DescriptionAs Woodstock and the Apollo moon landing lit up the skies of history, Tal Brooke flew to New Delhi, quickly becoming immersed in the vast subcontinent of India as he pursued a radical pilgrimage of consciousness. After quickly exhausting the "Grand Tour" of landmarks popularized by the spiritual tourists of the West, Brooke plunged into wilderness India, and the journey shifted into high gear. From their first meeting, Brooke was heralded by Sai Baba, India's greatest miracle-working godman, as the inner-circle disciple who, like Oppenheimer at Los Alamos, would help trigger the explosion of India's ancient mystical tradition into the Western world.Within Baba's enchanted realm, Brooke saw and experienced things that seemed to obliterate all Western conceptions of reality as his journey vectored further into an alien universe. What had appeared as the prized state of godlike enlightenment, which seemed just within reach, became a precipicenot of enlightenmentbut obliteration, even possession. Brooke was becoming a captive soul of an ancient inner transformation, while Baba's outward divinity concealed a timeless, demonic presence. After two years of surrender to a Being who claimed to be God on earth, something remarkable happened. The end-game of spiritual powers ensnaring one man's soul turned abruptly and miraculously. Poised on the edge of a precipice, Brooke was rescued from above. With hauntingly vivid images, unexpected humor, and a profound passion for truth, Brooke lays bare the powerful reality of good and evil and of things beyond the familiar realm of the senses, in a book that will not be easily forgotten.

God Speaks ReviewI first read this wonderful book in 1970, when the soil of my life, the ground of my being, had been torn apart by the tempests and storms of growing up in the 1960's, and I had developed an eager and insatiable, even desperate thirst to find out what is my purpose in life, what am I doing here, who am I....
"God Speaks" provided an answer and planted a seed that has developed into a mighty tree whose beautiful and radiant branches have spread lovingly over the entire landscape of my life, even while revealing in contrast ever more clearly the beauty and wonder of the infinite sky beyond. In its last chapter, this book says that the Truth about God and Creation and Reality is still far beyond what can be put into words, but the words of this book at the time not only satisfied my mind about all the questions of why and wherefrom and whereto -- a mind that had eagerly absorbed all the science and math and art and psychology and philosophy it could handle and still came up hungry and thirsty -- but it also seemed to answer questions welling up from deep within that I could not yet even formulate.
The first words of Chapter One still ring in my heart: "All souls (atmas) were, are and will be in the Over-Soul (Paramatma). Souls (atmas) are all One. ..."
This book is really a mighty poem about the evolution of consciousness of the soul, through earthly forms of stone, metal, vegetable, worm, fish, bird, animal, and human being, and then through numerous lifetimes of every sort of experience -- of being man and woman, rich and poor, happy and miserable, good and bad -- until the soul's consciousness turns inward and it begins to experience stages and worlds of increasing unity of sensation and perception ... until it finally comes face to face with God the Beloved, and after gazing at the Beloved for an eternity of love and longing ... finally becomes one with the Beloved, and realizes Who, in Reality, it has always been.
Once you read this book by Meher Baba, you will never again look out at life with the same eyes.God Speaks OverviewGod Speaks is Meher Baba's most complete statement of the process of Creation and its purpose. This recent reprinting maintains the contents of the 1973 revised edition while presenting the material in a new style. A contemporary format makes the work attractive and easier to read for today's audiences.God Speaks incorporates all of life into a spiritual saga. The only protagonist is God, and his story encompasses all individual biographies. It is God himself who becomes the three basic processes for the growth and transformation of consciousness: evolution, reincarnation and involution (the spiritual path of return to Himself). The first phase of God's journey is evolution. It is initiated from a totally unconscious God as if an infinite Ocean were in a state likened to deep sleep. This unconscious God speaks the First Word "Who am I?". This question disrupts the limitless, undivided, absolute vacuum, and its reverberations create individualized souls, compared to drops or bubbles within the Ocean. By speaking the First Word, God establishes the process of Creation, in which he assumes evolving forms to gain increasing consciousness.Individuality is the vehicle of this quest. Evolution marks a series of temporary answers to "Who am I?" The soul traverses a multitude of forms, beginning with simples gases and proceeding slowly through inanimate stone and mineral forms. These early evolutionary stages obviously have only the most rudimentary consciousness and cannot provide a satisfactory answer to God's original question. The original query thus provides a continuing momentum for the drop soul to develop new forms each with greater consciousness, including the many plant and animal beings. Every evolutionary kingdom reveals new dimensions of consciousness and experience. Each also offers opportunities to gain different kinds of awareness. For example, when the soul identifies itself with varied species of fish, it experiences the world as a creature living in waterconversely, as a bird, it enriches its consciousness by flying through air. When the drop soul finally evolves to human form, consciousness is fully developed, but an individual is still not aware of the potential of his or her consciousness. So the original "Who am I?" imperative persists and inaugurates the second phase: reincarnation. Since consciousness is fully developed, there is no longer a need for evolving new forms. The individual's experience, gathered in early stages of evolution, is now humanized and expressed in countless lifetimes. The impulses gained in sub-human forms can play themselves out in the broader context of intelligence, emotions, choices, diverse setting and interactions with people. But obviously no single lifetime can bear the burden of "humanizing" the entire evolutionary inheritance randomly or simultaneously. There must be a method for re-experiencing the pre-human legacy in manageable segments. The soul thus experiences alternately a series of opposites, organized according to themes. Accordingly, in different lives, the soul becomes male and female, rich and poor, vigorous and weak, beautiful and ugly. Through exploring the potential of these many opposites, one eventually exhausts all possible human identities and, therefore, has fully learned the entire range of human experience. Here begins the third phase: involution, the process by which the soul returns to the full awareness of the Divine Force, which created him. As Meher Baba puts it, "When the consciousness of the soul is ripe for disentanglement from the gross world (the everyday world of matter and forms(, it enters the spiritual path and turns inward."Like evolution, involution has certain states and stages, consisting of "planes" and "realms." But individuality continues along this spiritual path. In fact, the book quotes the Sufi saying "There are as many ways to God as there are souls...."Each new plane denotes a state of being that differs from the states that proceeded it. The first three planes are within the subtle world or domain of energy, "pran." There follows the fourth plane, the threshold of the mental world, where misuse of great power for personal desire can lead to disintegration of consciousness. The fifth and sixth planes represent true sainthood, which is understood to be increasing intimacy with God as the Beloved. On the sixth plane, the mind itself becomes the inner eye that sees God everywhere and in everything. "The loving of God and the longing for His union," says Meher Baba "is fully demonstrated in the sixth plane of consciousness."The seventh plane marks true and lasting freedom. Impressions go. Duality goes. The drops burst and again become the Ocean. God answers his question of "Who am I?" with "I am God." The Infinite has returned to the original starting point. He now knows, however, with full consciousness and full awareness that he was, is and always will be infinite. And he realizes that the entire journey has been an illusory dream, the purpose of which is the full awakening of his soul.Yet the saga is not necessarily over. Meher Baba indicates that even among God-realized souls responsibilities within Creation may differ. Most play no further active part in Creation. But a rare few make the journey back to human consciousness. Of these, five become Perfect Masters, blending divine consciousness with awareness of all beings in evolution, reincarnation and involution. These five administer the affairs of the universe. And they use their "infinite knowledge, power and bliss for the progressive emancipation of all in the field of illusion."Meher Baba differentiates these Perfect Masters, who are always on earth, from the Avatar, who is the "that highest status of God, where God directly becomes man and lives on earth as God-man." He further comments that the "Avatar is always One and the same, the eternal, indivisible, infinite One who manifests Himself in the form of man as the Avatar, as the Messiah, as the Prophet, as the Buddha, as the Ancient Onethe Highest of the High."A little over a year before the first publication of God Speaks, Meher Baba officially declared himself to be that Avatara claim that amplifies the meaning of the title. To the one who accepts Meher Baba's position, God's plan is revealed vividly through these pages.

Buddhism and Christianity in the light of Hinduism ReviewYou have to be interested in the subject to really appreciate this book, and be willing to read it somewhat thoughtfully. I was and I did. Books that give me new perspectives and from which I gain insight and knowledge for me -- are worth reading. This is the reason I give it five stars.
The author is usually associated with the great and revered Hindu mystic and teacher -- Ramana Maharshi.
Arthur Osborne has written a number of books about this sage and was his most devoted Western student for many years until Ramana Maharshi's death.
Osborne states the thesis of this book: "Buddhism and Christianity are the two complimentary aspects of a single process: the provision of a proselytising religion based on a Divine Founder in two forms, advaitic or metaphysical for the East and dualistic or devotional for the West, for the benefit of peoples whose own religions had lost their spiritual potency."
In the course of doing this, the author, among his chapters, devotes one to Hinduism and Buddhism, and another one to Buddhism and Christianity. He shows the ways these three religions are intertwined and the ways in which they seem more distinct from one another.
Humans have experienced the Absolute and developed religions by which in a somewhat unified and disciplined manner he/she can seek and attain that unity with Reality that mankind has a essential need for. What we must be careful of is "false prophet's" And, for many of us it is better to follow one of the great spiritual traditions that have stood the test of time.Buddhism and Christianity in the light of Hinduism OverviewSri Arthur Osborne has in his deceptively simple butprofound exposition highlighted the essential unity of all the threereligions discussed in this work.He has clearly and directly gone tothe heart of what makes a religion alive as an instrument oto discoverthe purpose of life and who we are.

The Hindus: An Alternative History ReviewAs someone who has grown up in an academic environment, I would like to think of myself as catholic in my outlook; but this book by Wendy Doniger was just off.
To start with I maintain two gold standards of writers from the west
writing on India. The first is Heinrich Zimmer who wrote 'Myths and
Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization' which I have gone back to
repeatedly over the past 20 years. The other is the works of William
Dalrymple and the work of his that I cherish the most is one titled
'White Mughals'.
The former is a scholar who has sought to deeply understand Indian culture and the myths it has evolved and the latter is a fine writer first and foremost with a keen eye and love for all things Indian.
But what really makes their writings classic that wants me to go back
to them repeatedly is their generosity of spirit and largeness of
heart. They do not shy away from the warts, but you know what is
driving them to research and write their material is a genuine desire
to understand and the joy of discovery.
That brings me to Ms Doniger. When I came upon the book after reading a review of it in the NY Times, I rubbed my hands in glee. Ah, here is a book I thought to myself, that is going to present new and important insights, from a seasoned philologist, that is going to enhance
one's knowledge of Indian culture in new and important ways (good or bad - no matter).
What Wendy Doniger does do is that she applies all the tools and techniques and filters of 20th and 21st century social and cultural analysis to bear upon circa 500 BC India and then proceeds to sit in judgment. But it turns out that no wart is unworthy of examination and it is warts that are examined!
As an example, I opened the chapter on the Upanishads with a degree of anticipation hoping that a sociological context to the content of the Upanishads is going to present new insights. To one's great disappointment there is nothing on the sheer poetry of the verse or the metaphysics therein. Rather the good professor takes one or two of the Upanishads and
proceeds to see male chauvinism and cruelty at every turn.
Really, that's what she got out of the Upanishads? For example how about the Ananda Valli Kanda of the Taittiriya Upanishad - which defines
happiness. Not a word on that. How about the psychological complexity unveiled in the Mandukya Upanishad? Not a word on that. As someone who has lapped up all sorts of commentaries on the Upanishads for many years now (all takes welcome), this one was astonishing primarily for its wholly missing the point!
Doniger's pettiness contrasts with the generosity of spirit I have
mentioned above. Two examples here. She has comments to make on the
Ramayana and the Mahabharatha. She writes, introducing them,
'considered by some as epics'. Really? Only some people consider these epics? I am all open and eager for scholarly analysis of any subject matter - but throw us a bone here (more on dogs later...!) - give the Indians their epics!
Another example in the same vein. She reference Shankara later in the
book and while describing him as the founder of the Shankara Matts
/Schools. She in paretheses writes 'is said to have founded'. Again,
really? If the Professor doubts that Shankara founded the Matts, I am
very interested in knowing about this! Even if it is vague conjecture, tell me more - I fully agree that Indian history can be vague, so please throw some light. But instead of exploring the justifiable debate or controversy that exists, she just has a throw away line, for apparently no reason.
The attitude that comes through is one of hostility, contempt and
shoddy writing. And the dogs. There are several hundred references to Indian
view of dogs. Whats with that? I am a pet owner myself and
love my dog. But this was so discordant that I was just not getting it.
There is also a chapter on Hindus in America. This section is so superficial that it is laughable. It feels like the author has browsed a couple of websites and found that enough to channel her points of view.
A final note on sex. A three thousand year old mature civilization has seen a lot in its ebbs and flows and the land of the Kama Sutra is
going to have its share of views. But Doniger sees hostile,
vituperative sexual mores at every turn, even when such an
interpretation is not warranted.
A metaphor I want to use for Wendy Doniger is the following. When I
was a kid, visiting my grandmother in Hyderabad, India, I would love
going to the 'sugar cane stand'. There the sugar cane wallah would
take the sugar cane stems and crush them through two rollers and
collect the juice into a cup. On a sunny summer day it was the best
drink ever. Then all the crushed pith would go into a rubbish pile on
the ground.
Heinrich Zimmer and William Dalrymple get to the sugar cane juice.
Wendy Doniger rakes about in the sugar cane pith with no concept of
what the juice is all about.
Does this mean that I do not recommend you read this book. Not at all. I am not one to shy away from a variety of perspectives or debate. So please do pick it up from the library and give it a glance. Just don't expect to walk away from it with new insights other than the fact that the author has an agenda and Indian culture happens to serve it in this case.
The Hindus: An Alternative History OverviewFrom one of the world's foremost scholars on Hinduism, a vivid reinterpretation of its history An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets—karma, dharma, to name just two—arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism—its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness—lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers—many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts—have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.

SimChurch: Being the Church in the Virtual World ReviewWhen Zondervan sent me a copy of 'SimChurch' by Douglas Estes (no relation) I assumed I was holding a book that encouraged traditional churches to update their decade-old websites and get their weekend services online. Boy was I wrong. Apparently while I wasted time mastering Rock Band in my basement other nerds have been experimenting how to have a virtual expression of the Church.
Viewing church services on the Internet is mostly a passive experience, just like watching an TV evangelist. Virtual churches have made a major leap beyond the one-sided nature of viewing a service. Community happens through the Internet; it just may not be the same definition of community that we grew up with. Each generation learns how it is going to connect with each other and technology is a major factor in that decision. The same can be said for churches. What the printing press, automobiles and air conditioning did to change the way society interacts, and the way churches meet, is happening again with the Internet. Whether or not we like the changes, it is here to stay. If a church wants to stay ahead of the curve, learning how to connect with this generation then they need to get plugged in. If, instead, they jump up and down on their pews, pound their pulpits and tip over the baptismal because they think their way of doing church is `right' they need to remember that most churches through history have had none of the conveniences they just threw their temper tantrum trying to defend.
This book was not written by someone on the inside trying to state a case for their virtual gaming world or new church software. Douglas Estes is the pastor of a real, brick and mortar church in San Jose, California; he has a PhD in Theology and is an Adjunct Professor of the New Testament at Western Seminary. He has put together a very thought provoking study of this new expression and isn't afraid to ask very specific, important questions:
* Is a virtual church a real, authentic, and valid expression of the Church of Jesus Christ?
* Can virtual community really work? How can virtual churches reenergize Christian community?
* Can avatars know God? Can the people of God experience spiritual growth as avatars?
* How will virtual churches change the way we `do' church? Are virtual sacraments and other faith practices possible or valid (or just inevitable)?
* How should virtual churches relate to traditional authority? Can virtual churches harness the power of decentralization without further fractioning Christianity?
* How can virtual churches confront sin and brokenness in the virtual world? What are the ethical issues facing virtual churches?
* What must a church do to turn a jumble of digital content into an Internet campus? What are the ingredients of healthy, virtual-campus life?
* Can a virtual church be a missional church? How will virtual churches engage in various forms of ministry? What types of virtual ministries will arise?
* How will virtual churches build communities? Will they be global or local? What are the dangers associated with churches based on virtual social connectivity?
* Will virtual churches open up the Gospel to all people? What will virtual churches teach us about the nature of being the church?
If you've been already been asking some of these questions then you will love the head start this book will give you towards the discussion. If you haven't been asking these questions, maybe you should be- if not for yourself, for the generation around you.
The truth is some people are more present and participatory in a virtual church setting than many people who passively attended a brick and mortar church. Some people who attend normal churches find more significant relationships online than they do on Sunday mornings. And those who see themselves as missional need to recognize that there is a new world for them evangelize, a whole new continent where many people are living. How will we be the church with them?
Even if you never attend a church service in Second Life, or one of the other virtual platforms, I hope you will consider reading this book to help understand and engage with the world you are living in.SimChurch: Being the Church in the Virtual World Overview

Dead Celebrities, Living Icons: Tragedy and Fame in the Age of the Multimedia Superstar ReviewMr. Ebert picks up where Marshall McLuhan, Camile Paglia and others left off, with a sort of Freudian neo-Platonism for the digital age.
The basic premise is that psychological creations, both by individuals and Western culture as a whole, have more tangible reality than reality itself.
The celebrities profiled did not achieve mythic status by dying; rather they were killed by their own creations, by the mythic doppel-gangers who haunted and hunted them until the flesh-and-blood people behind the masks simply could not coexist.
How did the celebrities create these personae when others failed? Did they have unique insights into the media? Were they born with special access to spiritual and psychological realms? It's not clear.
But it is clear that what distinguished these icons was the degree to which they were willing to sell themselves for fame. Where others stepped back from the abyss, they stepped forward. The steps leading up to their cultural sainthood is the subject of the book.
It's easy to see how mass adulation can corrupt. But what some might call madness, Ebert sees as very real angels and demons almost looking for the right host to then photosynthesize to life through the artificial light of the media.
If you are a strict materialist you might find Ebert's whole premise (and freqeunt digressions)a little "out there." Yet seeing is believing, and Ebert shows you the celebrities exercising--and exorcising--their powers. For example he observes that Elvis "literally" makes the convex tv screen bend behind his enormous energy when shot from the waist up on Ed Sullivan. Come to think of it, Elvis did just that, if only in terms of his psychological impact. For Ebert, the physical is a pale shadow of underlying reality. Thus his neoplatonism.
It would be useful to hear Elvis' own views of how he "bent" the screen, of his own spirtual experiences, etc. Instead all the celebrity lives are surveyed and the rest is merely conjecture -- but what wonderful conjecture! In the end I felt I was under a spell, one where reality is malleable and I could feel the possibilities and dangers that the celebrities themselves must have felt.
Mr. Ebert bills himself as an "independent scholar," but he is more so a kindred spirit to the very people he profiles, a word wizard for the (admittedly small) circle willing and able to speak his language.

Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love ReviewMessages from Jesus is written by a woman I personally know -- a healer who has been able to see and converse with Jesus since childhood. Despite her reticence about the name, Saint Ta, Jesus told her to use it (see Chapter One). He said she was to write books of spiritual truth for others, sharing her experiences and His words of hope for humanity.
Throughout the book, Jesus reminds us that "God is a loving God" and that the Old Testament conception of a vengeful, punishing God is erroneous. Many Christians and Jews today are moving away from the belief that God is judgmental and vengeful. It is always disturbing to have one's beliefs challenged, but Jesus wants us to realize that God is a God of love and mercy, not of condemnation and punishment. He makes it clear throughout the book that we, not God, are the ones who judge each other and ourselves, and delve out punishment.
Jesus discusses life and death, in response to Saint Ta's question about those who have or perform abortions. He says: "Life is precious, before war and after war. Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war? Within your dualistic world, you perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as you perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Therefore, I simply ask that whatever you do, do it with love." (p. 265) Jesus is making the point that, just as many believe war is justified in certain circumstances, so also many believe abortion is justified in certain circumstances. He began His response to Saint Ta's question by telling us "There are many individual situations that warrant or censure abortion." He also states that the issues are complicated and unfathomable from our human perspective, the soul cannot die, and "It is not for me nor you to judge." Therefore, He simply asks: "whatever you do, do it with love."
Jesus does not take sides for or against war or abortion. When he says, "Do you condemn those who send your youth to die in war?", Jesus is not suggesting that we should or should not condemn these leaders; He is simply pointing out that, in fact, many of us do not condemn them. He is showing us that, within our dualistic world, many perceive circumstances that warrant war, even as many perceive circumstances that warrant abortion. Just as many do not condemn those who send our youth to die in war, so also many do not condemn those who perform abortions. Jesus' words often have to be carefully read and contemplated in order to comprehend His meaning.
At the beginning of the chapter "War", Jesus says, "Thou shalt not kill. War, among other things, is cause and effect, resulting from and in karmic debt. Karmic experiences are destined to happen over and over, unless the chains of karma are broken and love reigns. The commandment, `Thou shalt not kill,' along with love, nonviolence and forgiveness, would rid the earth of this karma, and worldwide peace would be maintained for generations to come." (p. 105) Throughout the book, we are reminded not to think of one kind of person as better or worse than another. By not judging and condemning others, by forgiveness, and by living in love, we unlock the door to spiritual awareness and find heaven on earth.
On page 99, Saint Ta talks about the life in plants, as well as in animals, and mentions that some people think we shouldn't eat animals. Jesus says, "People are unique and from many nationalities, each originally created for and born in their own environment. Now that you can travel from one area to another and live in areas far from your origins, you may not be receiving what you need from your new environment. Seriously think about the food source from the area where you were born and the genealogy of your family. It was the vibration of that area that penetrated into your consciousness....It is the shared vibration with others within that area that draws them back. The best foods for you are grown in and of the environment of your origin." It is important to know that our genetic inheritance and the vibration of the area we were born in determine which foods are best for us.
Messages from Jesus is full of advice for our times, as well as timeless teachings and truths for all of us to live by. Jesus discusses the environment, terrorism, love, oneness, reincarnation, and many other important matters that concern us all. The author has performed a great service by recording Jesus' words and sharing her experiences with the Master.
Messages from Jesus: A Dialogue of Love OverviewMessages from Jesus A Dialogue of Love"Imagine listening to an interview of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of us would be sitting there just praying that the host would delve into the issues that are near and dear to us. In her book, Messages from Jesus - A Dialogue of Love, Mary Ann Johnston shares with the world hours of conversation she had with the One known as The Christ."Chances are, if you have a question for Him, the answer lies in these pages, as the essence of the spiritual life, modern religion, world affairs, and disasters are all dealt with rather comprehensively."Nothing that I or the author could say will convince anyone skeptical of these pages' origin about their authenticity. But then again, only personal conviction will allow any scripture to be thought of as veritable. I encourage you to delve into this work and find out for yourself if Truth is present here. My guess is, regardless of what you determine, you won't skip a page."- Fred Stella, President, Interfaith Dialogue Association and Host of Common Threads: An Interfaith Dialogue, heard weekly on WGVU Radio, Grand Rapids, Michigan

The Origins of Evil in Hindu Mythology (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions) ReviewVery interesting. Salvation is reversed: men try to save the gods. Both Indra and Shiva must come down to earth to expiate their sin and thus regain lifeblood. Hindu gods removed the impurity of death from themselves, and gave it to the men. This was the reason behind the fall of man. Maybe this portrays the background story of what underwent in the garden of Eden. This could give some insight into the origins of evil. It is a full-scale scholarly work. The Origins of Evil in Hindu Mythology (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions) Overview

The Asian Jesus ReviewNine selected images from Asian literature, culture and religion can offer new insights into Jesus, and THE ASIAN JESUS offers a different kind of interpretation perfect for understanding both differing cultural perceptions and ideas of Jesus. Jesus has been depicted, for example, as guru, satyagrahi, avatar and even a danger: Biblical quotes and spiritual reflection blend in a fine guide perfect for any serious Christian library; especially important for those seeking a cross-cultural representation of Jesus. The Asian Jesus OverviewIn beginning this book, Michael Amaladoss states that images are important in helping us grasp who Jesus was and is. Following that insight, he unfolds the way in which nine images from Asian literature, culture, and religion open new horizons on the Founder of Christianity. The images are: Sage, Way, Guru, Satyagrahi (witness to truth), Avatar (incarnation of the divine), Servant, Compassionate One, Dancer, and Pilgrim.Amaladoss helps us read the New Testament with new eyes. Not only does a Jesus more familiar to the peoples of Asia emerge, but we see how the East has helped the entire world Christian family gain a richer perspective on the man from Galilee.

In Search of the True Light ReviewIn Search of the True Light is an insightful, powerfully written book that is perfect for truth seekers looking to learn more about other religions. I enjoyed learning about other religions in a way that honored their beliefs, but still held fast to the absolute truths of Christianity. Mike Shreve's in depth analysis of world beliefs comes directly from their sacred texts, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions. His tone throughout the book is one of sincere compassion and understanding, without the pride and judgment I have often found in other books of this sort. I especially loved how Mike Shreve wove his own personal journey of finding truth throughout the text, something that I believe most people can relate to. This book is thoughtful and affirming. I highly recommend it!In Search of the True Light OverviewAre all religions different paths to the same God? Are all names given to God equally legitimate? Is Ultimate Reality a personal God or an impersonal cosmic energy? Is truth subjective or objective? In Search of the True Light answers these and many other v ital questions surrounding religion and spirituality. This one-of-a-kind book *Compares over 20 religions!*Reveals fascinating commonalities!*Exposes evident contradictions!*Responds to far eastern concepts like: reincarnation, karma, monism, pantheism, enlightenment and endless cycles of creation!*Shares Mike Shreve's personal, spiritual journey!*Unveils the TRUE LIGHT that will guide you from time to eternity!

The Religion War ReviewThe Religion War is a direct follow up to God's Debris. God's Debris is almost entirely a thought experiment with the setting and characters as a backdrop, while The Religion War takes it a step forward by creating a future world in which the Muslim and Christian nations are on the brink of war.
Geared towards "those with short attention spans," the lack of transitions and expositions may be unsettling and almost jarring to some. Scott Adams is definitely "thinking like an engineer" with minimal literary devices in place to lay the groundwork for the reasoning and message the book is based on.
The book offers very few new ideas philosophically, but presents them in a manner that are thought-provoking and digestible to the open-minded. Religion cannot hold up to any sort of logicial rigour, and Adams suggests to have faith its literal tenets is "stupid." Yes, he actually uses the word "stupid." Atheists and agnostics will enjoy the manner in which some of the big questions are tackled logistically, but believers may be turned off and even offended. Regardless, the approach to the "big questions" in the eyes of the main character is definitely worth reading about and considering.
The fundamental problem, besides the plot holes, is that Adams paints a world in which people and opinions can be changed through reasoning, and that smart people are "right." Looking at all the hatred that exists in the world today, this is definitely a big stretch. Smart people may be right, but convincing less educated people of such is nearly impossible.
At many times it seems even implausible that such unreasonable characters would listen to reason, but the reader has to keep in mind the conversations are a device to facilitate the ideas Adams is trying to convey.
This book is definitely worth the read and the flaws are somewhat easy to gloss over if you look for the underlying message. The Religion War OverviewWith publication of The Religion War, millions of long-time fans of Scott Adams's Dilbert cartoons and business best sellers will have to admit that the literary world is a better place with Adams on the loose spreading new ideas and philosophical conundrums. Unlike God's Debris, principally a dialogue between its two main characters, The Religion War is set several decades in the future when the smartest man in the world steps between international leaders to see if he can prevent a catastrophic confrontation between Christianity and Islam that would destroy most of civilization. The parallels between where we are today and where we could be in the near future are clear.Adams says The Religion War targets "bright readers with short attention spans-everyone from lazy students to busy book clubs." The book may be a three-hour read, but it's packed with concepts that will be discussed long after the last page is turned, including a list of "Questions to Ponder in the Shower" that will underline the story's purpose of highlighting the most important-yet most ignored-questions in the world.

Chasing the Avatar (Descent) (Descent (Destiny Image)) ReviewWorthy of her Harvard Education, Jovan Jones writes in a poetic, briskly paced, and original style. I could not put this book down. She has written a powerful, true to life account, that literally thousand's can relate to from their own experiences.
I have lived in Amritapuri, India and traveled with Ammachi. This book is A MUST READ for anyone who has been a devotee or thinking about becoming one. "Chasing the Avatar" will be shocking for those seeking enlightenment with a so called "Avatar".
Jovan writes brilliantly, and personally, through the eyes of a Christian, but relevant from any religious background, or context. This tale attests to the reality that destructive cults can arise in religious as well as secular organizations.
Jovan was brought up Christian, but was also a "spiritual seeker" in her early adult life. And naturally curious. She, like so many, could not see the danger going in. As the main character, Maya (Jovan) learns, spiritual quests are not without danger,
Thank God that Maya, grew up in a loving, spiritual household. Without that, I don't think she would have lived to tell her story. If you are a Devotee reading this, I mean no offense to you. Many committed, wonderful people can be deceived, and are being deceived. I am one of them. Amma, is playing god. No question about that. She demands submission, also. She "is" the only "authority" in her twisted and, at times, disgusting world.
I know of the 9 deaths at the Ashram that were not investigated. That doesn't include the other mysterious deaths, of devotees, who died when they were outside the Ashram in India. Some of those deaths were predicted by Ammachi. Some said: "oh Amma told him not to go to Varkala, He fell off the cliff, on the first day". " Amma knows everything". etc. Many of these kinds of stories are circulating at all times. Little mythologies, that all boil down to one thing: worshiping Ammachi, as god. No Devotee of hers can deny it. They openly worship her as god. Their god. Even if some can't quite get that she "created everything" they still ritualistically worship her. Mindlessly. Unquestioningly.
I am a witness to Amma's rage, and cruelty also, and I will not soon forget it. Thank God for you, Jovan! for telling it like it is, in a way, that for me was emotionally gripping, and sometimes terrifying, Thank you for telling my story through your's.
I am greatful, that you have exposed the dark side of the so called "Hugging saint"
Thank You!Chasing the Avatar (Descent) (Descent (Destiny Image)) OverviewMaya is a young woman with extraordinary prospects drowning in intense discontent. In the midst of this discontent, she meets Cha Ma, a guru. Immediately, she comes to believe that Cha Ma is an avatara human incarnationof the goddess Kali, the most malevolent, destructive of all Hindu deities. Spellbound, Maya runs off to India to live in Cha Mas ashram as a Hindu. Her choice hurls her parents, Paul and Marie, into a battle far beyond their wildest imagination for they must fight for their daughters life, and even her soul, as she teeters on the edge.

Avatar of Night, Special Millennial Edition ReviewIt is not surprising that the first review of this book was overwhelmingly negative. Sai Baba, after all, has millions of disciples, and this book stands alone as the only comprehensive and credible, dissenting account of Baba's claims to be God.
The story is cinematic. The narrative is evocative and immersive, and is begging to make the transition to feature film. The book, written by a child of the sixties, tells a tale common to the era - a search for spiritual truth - but an uncommon tale in that the author went on a road less traveled, journeying to India and ending up as an intimate disciple of the country's most popular and charismatic guru, whose devotees include members of the Indian government.
But it is more serious than that. Baba is more than a guru. Baba claims to be God. The God. Your God and my God. That he can appear to back up this claim by performing dramatic miracles - materializing solid objects from thin air is one example - and having some undeniable level of revelatory knowledge into people's thoughts, makes him a very dangerous person if his claims are false.
To call this book 'one-sided' is completely missing the point. The book, if anything, tells two sides of the story in its answering the question about Baba's divinity.
The first half of the book is an account by an intimate disciple convinced of Baba's divinity. The second half recounts in great detail the gradual process of revelation of another side to Baba - a 'spiritual detective story', if you like - ultimately leading up to a powerful and dramatic conclusion.
When people set themselves up with any kind of power over us, whether politicians or spiritual leaders, it is important that their lives and their beliefs that influence and affect us are transparent and open for examination. In other words: if God gave us minds, presumably he would want us to use them.
The fact is that this book is the only chance that most worshipers of Baba around the world are going to get to hear an informed, alternative opinion of Baba's claims. And that the opinion is offered by one of the few people who can claim to have known him closely for two years requires them to pay attention.
I first read this book ten years ago, when it was available in the West as 'Lord of the Air'. It is one of the few books that I have read many, many times - no small praise from an English graduate and journalist.
The literary quality of the account, the intense and gripping story, the integrity of the investigation Brooke undertakes, and the personal suffering Brooke later underwent to get the text published in the West after the Indian government banned it, make this one of the few books that you absolutely have to read. Whether you have any interest in Baba, or just enjoy a good real-life adventure story, this book is highly recommended.Avatar of Night, Special Millennial Edition OverviewAs Woodstock and the Apollo moon landing lit up the skies of history, Tal Brooke flew to New Delhi, quickly becoming immersed in the vast subcontinent of India as he pursued a radical pilgrimage of consciousness. After quickly exhausting the Grand Tour of landmarks popularized by the spiritual tourists of the West, Brooke plunged into wilderness India, and the journey shifted into high gear. From their first meeting, Brooke was heralded by Sai Baba, India's greatest miracle-working godman, as the inner-circle disciple who, like Oppenheimer at Los Alamos, would help trigger the explosion of India's ancient mystical tradition into the Western world. Within Baba's enchanted realm, Brooke saw and experienced things that seemed to obliterate all Western conceptions of reality as his journey vectored further into an alien universe. What had appeared as the prized state of godlike enlightenment, which seemed just within reach, became a precipice not of enlightenment but obliteration, even possession.
