Ritual of Proof ReviewWelcome the typical romance world, only it's a mirror image. Women are in charge, men are virginal, and it's a futuristic regency place.
So original, great as a satire, steamy, erotic, interesting. I found myself in love with Jorlan and Green who are really well rounded.
It was interesting to read of a world where women are in charge and end up subjegating men just as men did us. Fascinating, but probably realistic. We would be just as petty as men.
A few things at the end don't make sense, but the entire novel is beautifully written. The scenery and imagination is lush, the characters fascinating, and the plot slow but you don't really notice.
Jorlan is about to be sold to Claudine, the mortal enemy of Green, the woman Jorlan secretly lusts after. To save him Green puts aside her kept pleasurer (um, Mister?) and marries him, introducing him to the world of sensual arts and land management.
Jorlan has surprises. He's a skilled intuitive lover because he's a sensitive- he's tied to the planet and has an affinity with all living things. He's aslo a deadly martial arts master posessing knowledge denied men on the planet.
Caludine tries to posion Green's people and destroy her, but only with Jorlan's help can Green win.
This introduced me to Dara Joy and most of her books have been worthy reads. This was the first I read and I'm still convinced the best.
I was sad to visit her site and see River (Green's pleasurer) was going to be the hero in the next novel. I guess we're going back to the viriginal woman, experienced man type romance.

The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) ReviewThis is Skurzynski's fourth book in the Virtual War Chronologs. While it's possible to read each book as a stand-alone book, you would lose an incredible amount of the story. I would highly recommend starting with "Virtual War: The Virtual War Chronologs" and then continue with "The Clones," "The Revolt," and lastly "The Choice." In this story Corgan is now 16 and has matured quite a bit. The book is rated for grades 5-8, but he faces many problems and decisions that adults would have trouble with, and I found myself totally immersed in the different dilemmas. As an animal lover, I also love the way animals are incorporated into the story. I don't want to give anything away to someone who has read the first three books, but if you are a SciFi fan you'll love this series! The conclusion will keep you on the edge of your seat. The books are well-researched and have good scientific detail. They're also pretty easy to read and are incredibly fast-paced. A perfect weekend would be to get all four books and read them start to finish, especially if you're snowed in and sitting by a fire!The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) Overview

The Unincorporated War ReviewI read the first book in this eventual trilogy and was very impressed. "The Unincorporated Man" is the story of Justin Cord, a businessman with terminal cancer, who gets himself frozen in the 21st century and is eventually revived in the 24th. Here he finds himself in a world where everyone becomes a legal corporation at birth and spend their lives trying to attain a majority of their own shares. The human race has by now expanded to inhabit the whole solar system all the way to the Oort cloud. The concepts are very well thought out and the science fiction is definitely of the hard variety with sound extrapolation of today's science several hundred years into the future. There is also a good villain, the evil Hektor Sambianco. This book reminded me in some ways of "The Space Merchants", the classic fifties novel by Frederick Pohl and C M Kornbluth of a future world dominated by big business.
The first book ends with Justin refusing to play the incorporation game, seeing it as slavery by another name. He is exiled to the outer solar system where he becomes somewhat of an anti incorporation messiah in the outer planets which leads to a war with the incorporation dominated inner solar system. This is where The Unincorporated War takes up the story and it's quite a different book in many ways being mostly dominated by epic space battles which I have to admit became a bit tedious after a while. It's also more verbose with plenty written about religious philosophy and I think could have been shorter. Interwoven in the story are the attempted manipulation of humanity by the avatars, self aware artificial intelligences who inhabit the future internet. Still, it's refreshing to see a well researched hard science fiction story like this and the authors deserve a lot of credit. The Unincorporated War has a cliffhanger ending and it's not clear how the story will conclude. Regardless of my slight reservations, I will definitely be buying the third book.
I've decided to give this four stars but if fractional stars were allowed it would probably be a strong 3 1/2. I didn't write a review for The Unincorporated Man but if I had it would have been a 5.The Unincorporated War Overview

Ready Player One ReviewBrief summary and review, no spoilers.
The year is 2044 and the world is an unpleasant and grim place. Famine and poverty are rampant, and to escape the bleakness of real life most people choose to instead enter the world of OASIS.
Let me explain OASIS - this is a virtual world that is very elaborate and realistic,and it contains multiple planets and landscapes. It was created in main part by a man named James Halliday, the ultimate lonely computer geek, who was obsessed with the 1980's. Halliday died some time before the start of this story but had stated in his will that his vast fortune would go to the person who could find three magical keys hidden in OASIS, pass the portals associated with them, and then find the ultimate prize - the hidden egg. Over the years many people have searched for these magic keys and gates but none have prevailed. Those who search call themselves gunters. Also at play is a villainess corporation called IOI led by a man named Sorrento - who's agents searching for the egg are called Sixers.
The main protagonist of this story is an 18 year old named Wade Watts. Wade lives in abject poverty with his uncaring and cruel aunt. Because Wade's life is so grim, like so many others he spends almost all of his time in OASIS. It's where he goes to school and it's in OASIS where he meets his friends - avatars named Aech and Art3mis. Because everyone he meets via OASIS is an avatar, it's hard for anyone to distinguish friend from foe.
Because of his real world lack of money and help, Wade has few powers and weapons for his avatar (which he named Parzival, a takeoff of Percival the Knight which was already taken.) Even with this disadvantage, because of his intelligence and his obsession with anything Halliday or 80's related he is able to figure out how to find the first key - the copper one, and figures out how to pass that first gate. The race is on, with other gunters and the Sixers in hot pursuit. The future of OASIS is at risk because Sorrento intends to start charging money for the use of OASIS, which would keep so many offline and unable to access it. And this competition poses real life dangers for the players as well.
This is really a quest novel in the grand tradition of great fantasy literature. We have obstacles to overcome and evil-doers to defeat, and "magic," albeit computer generated, along the way.. There is plenty of action in this book and you will be turning the pages eagerly to read what happens next.
One of the (many) things that makes this book so wonderful are all the 80's references, especially to the video games and music and movies that so many of us fondly remember.
Note - don't worry if you weren't or aren't a big video game player or don't remember a lot about the 80's - if you are it might only add to your enjoyment of this novel but anyone can follow along. The story is both innovative and old-fashioned and it should appeal to anyone who loves to lose themselves inside a good novel.
At heart, this is a book for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or a geek, and for those of us who love to read. I haven't fallen in love with a book like this in a long time and I hope it gets the recognition and readership that it deserves. As an added plus, and without giving away any spoilers, there is an interesting twist of sorts at the end, that poses an ethical dilemma for anyone wielding power over OASIS.
Highly recommended. Just a magical book with a cast of characters that you will really care about. Even though this takes place in the year 2044, the sense of nostalgia and the world created will take you back in time to the way you felt when you were 18. I promise.Ready Player One Overview
