The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) ReviewThis is Skurzynski's fourth book in the Virtual War Chronologs. While it's possible to read each book as a stand-alone book, you would lose an incredible amount of the story. I would highly recommend starting with "Virtual War: The Virtual War Chronologs" and then continue with "The Clones," "The Revolt," and lastly "The Choice." In this story Corgan is now 16 and has matured quite a bit. The book is rated for grades 5-8, but he faces many problems and decisions that adults would have trouble with, and I found myself totally immersed in the different dilemmas. As an animal lover, I also love the way animals are incorporated into the story. I don't want to give anything away to someone who has read the first three books, but if you are a SciFi fan you'll love this series! The conclusion will keep you on the edge of your seat. The books are well-researched and have good scientific detail. They're also pretty easy to read and are incredibly fast-paced. A perfect weekend would be to get all four books and read them start to finish, especially if you're snowed in and sitting by a fire!The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) Overview

Kingdom Keepers II: Disney At Dawn ReviewHaving been a Disney cast member for many years, I read Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, and now it's sequel Kingdom Keepers II: Disney at Dawn with great interest. Both offer a fun read for kids and adults alike. With "Disney at Dawn," author Ridley Pearson has continued his story of the Kingdom Keepers, a group of school children who originally modeled for the fictional holographic Interactive Host Program at Disney's Magic Kingdom but who now find themselves the unofficial protectors of Disney. In the original story, the kids are magically transported into the Magic Kingdom at night while they're asleep. Their mission - to find out who is behind the mysterious goings on in the park after dark. Animatronic figures are roaming the parks and Disney characters have come alive, including the villians. Now, in the sequel, the kids again find themselves in the park; this time in Disney's Animal Kingdom. They must delve deeper into the mystery of the Overtakers, to find out which super villian is really in charge and what horrible scheme the villians have in mind. Fans of Disney, especially cast members past and present, will enjoy the refereneces to familiar locations and settings. Sure, there are some glaring errors (Ridley, it's Fantasmic, not the fantasmics) and some lesser errors that only cast members will appreciate (there are some interesting assumptions concerning ride operation and cast member IDs for example) but it is a work of fiction, so those mistakes offer an additional element of interest for those of us who work in the industry. I strongly recommend this series as a wonderful read for all ages. With page-turning actions, humorous dialogue, and engaging characters, it's a fun addition to any library!Kingdom Keepers II: Disney At Dawn OverviewIt's supposed to be a happy day at the Magic Kingdom-the return of the teenaged holographic hosts. But things go very wrong when a sudden lightning storm disrupts the celebration, and Amanda's mysterious sister, Jez, disappears. The only clue is the sighting of a wild monkey in the Magic Kingdom during the storm. The mystery deepens as Finn is contacted by Wayne, an old man he hasn't heard from in months. Wayne tells Finn that there's trouble at the Animal Kingdom: the evil Overtakers have gained control of one of the computer servers that will be used to operate Daylight Holographic Imaging there. That means that if any of the holographic hosts fall asleep, they will go into comas-permanently. Filled with action and brimming with the same meticulous detail as The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, this second book in the series-Disney at Dawn-is the result of hands-on research behind the scenes at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. Young and older readers alike will get a glimpse into a second Disney kingdom. The wild rides have only just begun; and the clock is ticking. How long can the teens keep themselves awake in their quest to find their friend-and what happens if they fail?

Portia's Exclusive and Confidential Rules on True Friendship ReviewOnce again Portia is on the case. There's a new girl at the middle school. Her name is Misty, and she's determined to make Portia her new best friend, in addition to getting Portia's help with a serious problem.
Portia is excited to have a new detective case and dives right in helping her new friend. The case involves a rabbit named Maxwell. He's one of the stray animals Misty has an uncanny knack for finding and bringing home. Although her mother doesn't approve, she can't seem to avoid running into animals with problems. Along with Maxwell the depressed bunny, she is dealing with a three-legged grasshopper that escapes in Portia's mother's restaurant, The Tent.
Needless to say, Misty is keeping Portia busy.
In other plot action, Portia is still searching for her absent father, Patch. She is hoping for new developments in that case and gets one from an unlikely source, Vera, owner of Trash and Treasures.
There is also a possible romantic interest in Portia's life. Webster the math genius seems to be trying to get Portia's attention with what he says is an important question.
Indigo's restaurant is once again a backdrop for much of the action. This time the menu item of interest is the pomegranate, and Portia finds herself sampling all sorts of crazy concoctions her mother creates.
PORTIA'S EXCLUSIVE AND CONFIDENTIAL RULES ON TRUE FRIENDSHIP is a fun read with whimsical characters, a bit of mystery, and insightful comments regarding the meaning of friendship.
Portia offers a needed breath of fresh air in tween lit. She doesn't worry about make-up, hair styles, and fashion magazines. Instead, she focuses on family and friends and helping make the world a better place.

Transformation (Water Trilogy, Book 3) ReviewNia, Corwin, and their Farworlder have finally completed their naming. But there is still trouble ahead. Ma'el, the evil mermyd tyrant, has taken over Atlantis and enslaved its people. Determined not to allow Ma'el to get away with his evil intentions, Nia and Corwin know that they must somehow travel back to Atlantis and free the city from Ma'el. Unfortunately, Corwin is human, and cannot breathe underwater. Yet, a secret about his past comes to light, and Corwin discovers that he is half human, half mermyd, with partially developed gills. Nia and the farworlder manage to help his gills develop, and the three of them return to Atlantis.
When they return to Atlantis, Nia discovers that her family has been either imprisoned in dry-rooms or killed. With the return of the new Avatars, the Atlanteans gain hope. They rebel against Ma'el, but he still manages to capture Nia, Corwin, and their farworlder. Trapped in seperate cells with no way to communicate telepathically with each other, it seems like there is no chance for their escape. Will Ma'el succeed in enslaving the mermyds of Atlantis? Or will Corwin and Nia escape and prevent him? The trilogy is brought to an end with this final book, Transformation.
READ THIS TRILOGY! It's creative, different, and action-packed. I LOVED this book! I especially liked how the three, Nia, Corwin, and the Farworlder, communicate telepathically. But best of all, this story ties in perfectly with the King Arthur legend. (You'll have to read it to find out how.) Princess of Gossip ReviewThere are many reasons to read this book. The authors made it simple to "see" the story play out by making the characters realistic and easy to relate to, the plot line is both believable and fun, and they incorporated lots and lots of pop culture. But I think the biggest thing that makes this book different is how well it built technology into the story-- like cell phones and MySpace, which we all use now. I'd never read a book that seemed to "get" how we use those things and build them into the story so well.

Ascension (Water Trilogy, Book 1) Review"Water: Ascension" is the first in a trilogy concerning sixteen-year old Nia, a mermyd of a prominent clan in the undersea realm of Atlantis. The City is ruled by squid-like Farworlders, and their Avatars - mermyds that undergo a special bonding ritual that allows them to communicate with the Farworlders and govern Atlantis wisely. To be an Avatar is the highest honour a mermyd can achieve, and it is Nia's dream. She believes she has a good chance at winning the position against other young candidates from other clans, but is devastated when her family instead chooses her cousin Garun instead of her.
The mystery deepens when Cephan, the young mermyd she likes, shows her a prisoner mermyd and a Farworlder that are kept as secret prisoners deep in the core of Atlantis. Nia is shocked at this, believing her city to be a purely benevolent citadel where things like dungeons and punishments are non-existent. The mystery deepens when Nia begins to suspect that her family is using magic to help Garun win the Seven Trials that each competitor must go through - and even her beloved grandfather Dyonis seems in on the conspiracy.
"Ascension" is followed by two more books; "Reunion" and "Transformation" and this is a beginning worthy enough to track them down, even though I am not a fan of authors/publishers that needlessly split their books into more than one volume. It will appeal most to readers between ten and twelve, as it is quite a slender book but there is quite a lot of exposition put in concerning how the bond between Avatar and Farworlders works, how the city runs and the layout of the Trials.
At times all of this is badly presented to the reader, often being too complicated or too contemporary (and with mentions of cloth existing underwater). For instance, there are references to "turtle-taxis" and "kelpaper journals," as well as words such as "biochemical" and "having a crush (on someone)". This would not be so bad if the time-period was assumed to be contemporary, but as it turns out in later books, it's actually set in medieval times.
But Atlantis itself is vividly portrayed, from its homes and markets, its meeting places and engineering mechanism and the "dry rooms" where air still exists to preserve documents. Kara Dalkey also has a gift with names, as all of the mermyds have appropriately aquatic, and somewhat Grecian names: Thalassa, Pelagia, Maru, Pontus and Callimar are just a few examples.
Nia herself is a great heroine: smart, athletic, spunky, but not too good to be true - her faults make her a well-rounded person, err, mermyd. She's very easy to relate to, and her motivations are clear and understood. By the end of this particular phase in her life, most will be reaching for the next book. Also, in a completely unrelated statement, I think the cover art on this book (and the next two) are just beautiful. I know it's wrong to judge a book by its cover, but if you did, this one would be the winner.Ascension (Water Trilogy, Book 1) Overview

Avatars, Book Three: Kingdom of Twilight ReviewThe final book in the Avatars trilogy picks up right where the previous book ended. Gus, Diana, Kali, and Tigre are sailing to Africa to escape their pantheons. Diana's spirit wanders through various underworlds trying to find a way back to her body. Meanwhile, the other avatars arrive in Africa to find that the African gods have taken over the continent as their own, coexisting with the few remaining humans. Kali and Tigre set off to track down a god who might be able to tell them how to return to their own time, while Gus walks into death to retrieve Diana's spirit. In between chapters are flashbacks to eighteen years ago where each avatar prepares to be reincarnated as a human.
This book introduces yet more gods and pantheons to the ones we've met in the previous books. Diana wanders through many underworlds, including the Chinese, Polynesian, and Sumerian ones, while Kali and Tigre meet Yoruba gods in Africa.
Kingdom of Twilight wraps up most of the various plotlines, but leaves you wondering how the rest of the avatars' lives, especially Kali and Tigre's, will turn out.Avatars, Book Three: Kingdom of Twilight Overview

Ruthlessly stabbed by a fellow avatar, Diana suddenly finds herself hopelessly wandering through the underworlds, fighting her way past everything and anything vile, struggling to find a way back to life.

Up above, her fellow avatars-Gus, Kali, and Tigre-have set sail to Africa, hoping to find refuge and a healer to bring Diana back from death. Time is racing against the avatars, because once Diana reaches the Greek underworld, Hades, she is gone. Forever.

But that problem pales in comparison to the larger issue at hand-only one avatar can take back the power of the gods and live forever.

Beautifully weaving together myth and realism, Tui T. Sutherland delivers the breathtaking conclusion to a trilogy that places the fate of the world in the outcome of a battle between power-hungry pantheons of gods and four teen avatars.

So This is How it Ends (Avatars, Book 1) ReviewKali lives in New York, and has a tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe. Tigre lives in Chile. He likes animals better then people, but rainstorms make him a little twitchy and he usually ends up running in them. Sort-of. Venus is a perfect teenage pop-star that everyone adores. Almost. Amon is an Egyptian boy who thinks he's got it all figured out. And Gus is a normal teenager who lives in LA with his older brother.
You'd never imagine that any of them would ever have anything to do with each other. Much less something in common. Or that there was any way that most of them would ever meet. Most of them would agree with you.
But when the world seems to end, they are the ones left standing.
I just have to say, this was a really good book. In fact, the main reason I didn't give it a Gold Award was because the ending cliffhanger was so huge and dramatic and cliffhangery that I threw the book. It's just mean to do that when I don't have access to the next book! So, I suppose I'm being selfish in withholding the Gold Award, but it's frustrating! That, however, is a horrible reason to not read this book. Just be forewarned, and maybe have the next book coming soon.
Two more things;
Aside from the fact that there is a TV show called Avatar, and a movie in production called The Avatar, neither of which have anything to do with this story, I could totally see this as a movie. *Hint, Hint*
Tui Sutherland's website is adorable and hilarious, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
And no, I don't know her, but I bet she's cool.

Shadow Falling (Avatars, Book 2) ReviewTui Sutherland is a fiction writer who provides a good story in Shadow Falling which is the sequel to So This Is How It Ends. In addition to the great story, the reader is shown that much more can be accomplished by working together as a team than by oneself.
Tui Sutherland was born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 31, 1978. She has lived all over the world. She lives in Boston. Sutherland is also the author of the book This Must Be Love. As seen in this book, she likes lost civilizations.
Sutherland thickens the original plot by introducing not one, but two new main characters bringing the total to six. Even though this is more main characters than in some books, Sutherland pulls this feat off very well. Each chapter is told through one or two of the characters' views. It is never confusing on who was telling the story, or what was going on. Throughout the story, the main characters work together which conveys the importance of teamwork.
The only part that was a little disappointing was there seemed to be a little too many plot twists and mystery. At one point a double of one of the characters is introduced, claiming to be the real person. But the reader never finds out who the real person is and who the double is! Also, though plot twists can be very interesting, there is one too many of them in this book that can confuse the reader to what exactly are happening. When all is said and done, this book is very entertaining. It has action, but not overwhelming so. It has enough calmer parts to let the reader catch up, but not that much so the book gets boring. With action in one part followed up with a bit of drama the next, this book would please almost any type of reader. Anyone can pick up this book, without even reading the first book.
