Amazonia ReviewHere you go folks, a book seemingly designed for those with ADD. Extreme action, mutated creatures, explosives, giant jaguars, violence( including dismemberment and head shrinking!), a dash of sex, poison, betrayal, technology on the fritz, insects that will eat you alive, pirahnas that will chase you onto land, giant caimans that will jump into trees, a lost tribe, a plague threatening the world, prehistoric plants, and regenerating body parts!
Whew, that's a lot of stuff going on and James Rollins pulls most of it off without a glitch. The characters are strong enough to make you care, the action is most definitely exciting, the various creatures interesting and nasty enough to shock and awe even the most poised reader. So why not 5 stars? Well...
The ending could have been better, there could have been a little bit more surprise when it comes to the realization of who the "mole" is (that was kinda Scooby Doo-ish), and those who deserved horrible demises get dispatched rather quickly.
However, if you have read Rollins earlier work you most likely won't be dissapointed here. No matter how you look at it this guy is damn fun to read, and his books would make excellent movies. I know I'd buy a ticket, and speaking of buying check out Subterrranean and Excavation, both solid actioners.
No Tor-Tors were harmed in the writing of this review.Amazonia Overview
The Rand scientific expedition entered the lush wilderness of the Amazon and never returned. Years later, one of its members has stumbled out of the world's most inhospitable rainforest -- a former Special Forces soldier, scarred, mutilated, terrified, and mere hours from death, who went in with one arm missing . . . and came out with both intact. Unable to comprehend this inexplicable event, the government sends Nathan Rand into this impenetrable secret world of undreamed-of perils, to follow the trail of his vanished father . . . toward mysteries that must be solved at any cost. But the nightmare that is awaiting Nate and his team of scientists and seasoned U.S. Rangers dwarfs any danger they anticipated; an ancient, unspoken terror -- a power beyond human imagining -- that can forever alter the world beyond the dark, lethal confines of . . .

Beyond Olympus ReviewI just finished reading your book Beyond Olympus and really enjoyed the story. Usually I don't read books that big because it seems they do not keep my attention or I just don't have the patience to get through it. Your book kept me moving and interested, by pulling me into the story. Being able to relate to the characters and feel what they were feeling made me want to keep turning pages. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The way you developed the two story lines and brought them together at the end was great. Adam and Eve in the garden, with the father, son and holy spirit for a new beginning for the planet. All my questions got answered about where, when, why etc. Nice work.
D Scott Ayars
Beyond Olympus OverviewWhat if, in the not-too-distant future, the world's wealthiest and most powerful man learned that civilization was virtually certain to collapse within the next 20 years? And what if that man built a great new city called Olympus as part of a mighty effort to change the course of history?Yet what if the best efforts by the people of Olympus proved futile in the end? What if civilization indeed fell, leaving only the remnants of Olympus's own society to carry the flickering torch of a once proud civilization? What then?Beyond Olympus imagines the answers to those questions in a cautionary tale that is thoughtful, exciting and epic in scale. It is a story that might have seemed farfetched just a few years ago, yet perhaps might seem uncomfortably plausible today'

The Eternal Prison (Avery Cates, Book 3) ReviewWhile I thought that The Electric Church was one of the best recent science fiction works I've read, I felt that the follow-up book, The Digital Plague, was less than fulfilling. Jeff Somers has returned to form, however, in the third installment of the Avery Cates series, The Eternal Prison.
Avery Cates is back in The Eternal Prison, which takes place soon after end of the digital plague from the second book. The cops and the army are fighting it out for control of society. Cates, the anti-hero hitman, gets pinched by the cops and thrown into Chengara, a prison specially developed for "people of interest" like himself. Cates has to use all of his wits to stay alive, and staying alive means breaking out.
The action moves along briskly in The Eternal Prison and avoids most of the exposition that slowed down The Digital Plague. Cates always has a new set of associates, since being a Cates associate tends to dramatically reduce life expectancy, but some old familiar faces also are in the mix. The new characters are woven into the story well and are, for the most part, more interesting than most of the new faces from The Digital Plague.
Probably the best thing about this entry in the series, apart from Somers' pacing, are the changes in Avery Cates. He's famous, he's tough, but as things continue to slide downhill, Cates begins to wonder if fighting is even worth the bother, especially if things look like they'll turn out the same way in the end. Or, if he goes on, for what purpose? Cates works through the questions in Cates fashion, simply but directly, without Somers turning him into some fountain of metaphysical mess.
It's a great installment, a return to the tight pacing of The Electric Church, and the central character is revitalized as something more than a stereotype. The Eternal Prison is definitely worth your time and money.
The Eternal Prison (Avery Cates, Book 3) OverviewAvery Cates is a wanted man. After surviving the worst bioengineered disaster in history, Cates finds himself incarcerated - in Chengara Penitentiary. As Chengara has a survival rate of exactly zero, the system's most famous gunner must do some serious plotting. And a betrayal or so later, he achieves his goal. At a price. All he has to do now is defeat some new personal demons, forge some unlikely alliances, and figure out why the people he's killed lately just won't stay dead.

The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) ReviewThis is Skurzynski's fourth book in the Virtual War Chronologs. While it's possible to read each book as a stand-alone book, you would lose an incredible amount of the story. I would highly recommend starting with "Virtual War: The Virtual War Chronologs" and then continue with "The Clones," "The Revolt," and lastly "The Choice." In this story Corgan is now 16 and has matured quite a bit. The book is rated for grades 5-8, but he faces many problems and decisions that adults would have trouble with, and I found myself totally immersed in the different dilemmas. As an animal lover, I also love the way animals are incorporated into the story. I don't want to give anything away to someone who has read the first three books, but if you are a SciFi fan you'll love this series! The conclusion will keep you on the edge of your seat. The books are well-researched and have good scientific detail. They're also pretty easy to read and are incredibly fast-paced. A perfect weekend would be to get all four books and read them start to finish, especially if you're snowed in and sitting by a fire! The Choice (Virtual War Chronologs) Overview

The Bloodlight Chronicles: Reconciliation ReviewI'm not sure where to start with this one - probably because I was very lost at the beginning. I thought that perhaps I had picked up a second in a series, but I could find no reference to a first book anywhere. The book in a nutshell is vampires meet cyperspace, but this isn't clear at first.
The Eternals are somehow "chosen" to become immortal in a non-aging sense. People can link to cyberspace by hooking up with a cord coming out of their head which seems to be connected to microchips they have had implanted in their brain. Ok - so far I'm following, but then come the strange references to levels and ranks in the cyberworld with no real explanation of what they mean.
Now, if you take the Eternals and the cyberworld somewhat out of the equation, the realtionships between the people are fascinating. The story revolves around a father, mother, and son. The parents are both Eternals and are trying to find a way to "infect" their son as well. They travel to the ends of the known universe (literally) to try and find this virus. However, beyond this the relationship was rather odd. Perhaps as a result of being so virtual based, the family's responses to each other seemed overly strained and impersonal.
2/5The Bloodlight Chronicles: Reconciliation OverviewDespite its futuristic technical trappings, enduring family bonds are at the core of this riveting techno-thriller. An alien virus that prolongs life has infected a couple, Zakariah and Mia Davis, and made their blood a valuable black-market staple due to its rejuvenating effects. The "eternal virus" has not affected their son Rix, and Zakariah is consumed with the search for an active sample to inoculate the teenager against mortality. To succeed, Zakariah surgically wired his brain for the global computer network, a virtual cyber-economy controlled by avatars. Busted for transporting grain without a permit and on the run from the government and the Eternal Research Institute, Zakariah must travel off-planet through a commercial wormhole alongside his new business partner and surgical cyber-twin, Helena Sharp, who is seeking the source of immortality for her own purposes. In the Cromeus colonies, on the other side of time and space, Zakariah will risk everything to give his son eternal life.

Kingdom Keepers II: Disney At Dawn ReviewHaving been a Disney cast member for many years, I read Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, and now it's sequel Kingdom Keepers II: Disney at Dawn with great interest. Both offer a fun read for kids and adults alike. With "Disney at Dawn," author Ridley Pearson has continued his story of the Kingdom Keepers, a group of school children who originally modeled for the fictional holographic Interactive Host Program at Disney's Magic Kingdom but who now find themselves the unofficial protectors of Disney. In the original story, the kids are magically transported into the Magic Kingdom at night while they're asleep. Their mission - to find out who is behind the mysterious goings on in the park after dark. Animatronic figures are roaming the parks and Disney characters have come alive, including the villians. Now, in the sequel, the kids again find themselves in the park; this time in Disney's Animal Kingdom. They must delve deeper into the mystery of the Overtakers, to find out which super villian is really in charge and what horrible scheme the villians have in mind. Fans of Disney, especially cast members past and present, will enjoy the refereneces to familiar locations and settings. Sure, there are some glaring errors (Ridley, it's Fantasmic, not the fantasmics) and some lesser errors that only cast members will appreciate (there are some interesting assumptions concerning ride operation and cast member IDs for example) but it is a work of fiction, so those mistakes offer an additional element of interest for those of us who work in the industry. I strongly recommend this series as a wonderful read for all ages. With page-turning actions, humorous dialogue, and engaging characters, it's a fun addition to any library!Kingdom Keepers II: Disney At Dawn OverviewIt's supposed to be a happy day at the Magic Kingdom-the return of the teenaged holographic hosts. But things go very wrong when a sudden lightning storm disrupts the celebration, and Amanda's mysterious sister, Jez, disappears. The only clue is the sighting of a wild monkey in the Magic Kingdom during the storm. The mystery deepens as Finn is contacted by Wayne, an old man he hasn't heard from in months. Wayne tells Finn that there's trouble at the Animal Kingdom: the evil Overtakers have gained control of one of the computer servers that will be used to operate Daylight Holographic Imaging there. That means that if any of the holographic hosts fall asleep, they will go into comas-permanently. Filled with action and brimming with the same meticulous detail as The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, this second book in the series-Disney at Dawn-is the result of hands-on research behind the scenes at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. Young and older readers alike will get a glimpse into a second Disney kingdom. The wild rides have only just begun; and the clock is ticking. How long can the teens keep themselves awake in their quest to find their friend-and what happens if they fail?

The Map That Breathed ReviewWow! I couldn't put this book down! The characters are real and likeable, just curious enough to get in trouble but smart enough to find a way out. It was a quick read, but satisfying. As a long-time educator, I found it intriguing: beautiful woven passages, sophisticated language yet incredibly readable. It was exciting, emotional and compassionate. I really cared about the characters. I can't wait to share it with my students. The Map That Breathed Overview

The Spiral Labyrinth: A Tale Of Henghis Hapthorn ReviewI rarely write reviews as I find that most people who have commented before me have covered the gamut, but this entry has been barren and I just finished the book so I figured I'd give it a go.
I first read Matthew Hughes in F/SF magazine about a year ago with his short story "The Sweet Trap" and I was hooked ever since. The one problem with picking up Hughes' work at that point is that it really helps to have read all previous Hapthorn stories to understand the setups and the relationships between the characters. So I went back and read The Gist Hunter and Other Stories and then picked up Majestrum. The Spiral Labyrinth then continues the saga and hints at a continuation.
For anyone who has read "The Sweet Trap" previously, the first couple chapters will be familiar as they are an adaptation of the aforementioned story. The pace picks up from there as Hapthorn is separated from his internal second-personality Osk Rievor and deposited in a land very much antagonistic to a rational freelance discriminator.
If you have read a Hapthorn story before, this continues the saga brilliantly. Without posting any spoilers, I love how each entry in the series (with the exception of some of the earlier stories) really changes the world and doesn't come full circle allowing for interesting setups for the next installments.
If you are new to Hengis Hapthorn stories, I can't recommend this yet. Read The Gist Hunter and Other Stories and the Majestrum. Then you will be greatly pleased when you reach this book.
I cannot wait for more. The Spiral Labyrinth: A Tale Of Henghis Hapthorn Overview

Identity Revealed (Nancy Drew, Girl Detective: Identity Mystery Trilogy, Book 3) ReviewThe last book of the Identity Trilogy, part of the Girl Detective series. This book was longer than the other two, and was just as exciting as the first two books. Nancy is still being bullied by another user on the Better Life game, and what's worst is that Nancy's friends are all being attacked too. Someone is also using Nancy's character on the game to attack her friends. When Nancy discovers the person behind the bullying and invasion of privacy, she has to fight the culprit in the game while waiting on the police to find the culprit in real life. Epic (Avatar Chronicles) ReviewAstonishingly good. The last time I read a book that swept me off my feet as thoroughly as this one, it was the very first time I read the very first Harry Potter book.
Not that there are all that many similarities, beyond that it's set in a very well-developed imaginary world and that it's also very well-written. The story is set in the distant future on a planet that was colonized by refugees from Earth. The characters are (appparently) many generations removed from that event; to them, it seems to have taken on some mythic qualities.
Because the refugees were fleeing from a world that was on the verge of destruction from warfare, they brought with them one inviolable law: no violence, EVER. All conflicts are resolved through combat within a computer role-playing game. Because this combat forms the basis of the legal system, it is vital for each citizen to have a character within the game that can win such a trial (should the need arise). The most successful players can also earn lucrative positions within the government.
As you're reading, be ready to pay close attention, because it's very easy to get caught up in the plot - it MOVES. Trust me, as much as you may be eager to find out what happens next, you don't want to miss a single word of what's happening NOW.
The descriptions are vivid and clear; game terminology is explained without being condescending.
The characters are fantastic; they are ordinary people - but not boring. They succeed and fail not because the plot demands it (or at least, not ONLY because the plot demands it) but as a result of their individual personalities and the choices they naturally make.
I go through a LOT of books. This one really stands out. Get it from your library (if they don't have a copy, demand one!) and see if you don't agree.Epic (Avatar Chronicles) Overview

Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch Review
Wow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch OverviewTwo powerful wizards battle for the greatest magical force ever to exist. The power escapes, but is severely injured. In order to survive the mystical force enlists the help of Dylan Murphy, a sixteen year old boy from Colorado. Strange things happen throughout the State as Dylan helps the magical force survive, restoring it back to health. Unknown to Dylan wicked foes will stop at nothing to seize control of this supreme power. The King and Queen of Colabra dispatch friendly forces to align with Dylan as the great chase begins. He is pursued from Colorado all the way across the universe through magical and mystical places. Battle after battle ensues with the wicked wizard and his followers as Dylan attempts to protect this great force from evil.

Islandia The Lost Colony (The ANKH Trilogy) ReviewI am not much of a sci-fi fan but thouroughly enjoyed this book. This was much more than what I was expecting. Am looking forward to the next book so I can continue the story of Jonathon and Marcia as they teach and discover the world of Islandia.Islandia The Lost Colony (The ANKH Trilogy) OverviewBook one of the ANKH Trilogy, the story of Earth's fifteenth colony, 450 years after being settled. It is a water world with tens of thousands of islands and very little usable landmass to build the cities the original pioneers envisioned. Without the ability to recreate an Earth-like civilization, their descendents sink back to a more primitive time and create a society of clanboats and small villages. Into this world is born Jonathon McKinnah, known as Jonny Oarboy to his fellow clansmen. An accidental contact brings Jonny in touch with an alien entity who has rested quietly on Islandia for 6,000 years. The two of them start an incredible journey taking them from the past to the present, from Islandia to old Earth, and finally to Earth's other colonies.

Glass Houses (Avatar Dance) ReviewI first read this serialized in Analog, and it is one of my
all time favorite science fiction stories. One cannot help
but empathize with the heroine. I admit that I am partial to the story because the climactic scenes take place not
far from where I grew up, so it is easy for me to visualize
what is going on. Still, the dark picture of New York City
in the future really sucks you into the story.Glass Houses (Avatar Dance) OverviewRuby runs waldoes. Freelance. Construction, security-no job too large or small. And her favorite tool is Golem, six hundred pounds of vaguely human-shaped, remote-operated power. Not an easy living, but it's better than most in half-sunken, greenhouse-heated, 21st Century New York. Best of all the waldoes go Outside, not Ruby. Ruby hats the Outside. But when a Ruby/Golem tries to rescue a rich Egyptian from a collapsing skyscraper, and accepts the papers he presses into her hands as he dies, Ruby's in trouble. She may have to go Outside for real. All of which might be a lot easier if she hadn't stolen the diamonds off his body'The 1992 feminist cyberpunk classic, finally back in print with an introduction by 2-time Arthur C. The Granite Avatars of Patagonia ReviewEvery page of this gorgeous book shines with profound insight, honest observation, and a true love of the landscape of Southern Patagonia. The remarkable photos are powerful portraits of light and shadow, reminiscent of Ansel Adams but crisper, more carefully composed. The rich, evocative and deeply personal text is both inspired and inspiring, and as thoughtful as the images it complements. Reading this book is a physical and spiritual journey to savor that takes the reader off the page, into the mountains and beyond. Tom is an exceptional guide to the mystery and beauty of the region and everyone I've shown it to agrees: Divine is indeed the only conclusion. The Granite Avatars of Patagonia OverviewThis exceptional book documents three seasons of adventure hiking, camping, backpacking and photographing in the Patagonian Andes. Author/photographer Reed spent significant parts of 2006 through 2008 exploring around El Chaltén, the Argentine village closes to the magnificent granite spires of Patagonia. The book primarily documents Reed s explorations to find locations for artistic compositions while creating portraits of the two legendary 3000-meter peaks, Cerro Torre and El Chaltén, also known as Mount Fitz Roy.Reed has created a unique book that successfully and powerfully evokes some of the world s most spectacular and awe-inspiring sights. Indeed the theme of the text is awe. Reed s large format black and white art photographs, powerfully composed, provide the focal point, drawing the reader in with their breathtaking power. The text appears on the facing pages with small color photographs, mostly of wildflowers, inset, allowing the reader to be further drawn in by the splashes of color and the clear, large-font text that displays Reeds personable reminiscences of his explorations and the multitude of thoughts they arose.Reed s book crosses many genres. Appealing to a wide range of people, from world-class climbers, avid explorers, world-trekkers and backpackers to fans of art and photography, ecotheologians, and folks who just love nature. The book has a cross-cultural, Pacific rim quality thanks to its South American subject matter, a strong Japanese influence in Reed s photographic composition and book design, and his history of exploring extensively in both Alaska and California. Reed uses a red stamp, or chop, not only to identify the artist, but as a finishing touch to the composition in the tradition of Asian black ink painting. All these factors combine to make a gorgeous book that anyone, or any store, should be glad to share.

The Last Airbender Movie Novelization (Avatar) ReviewI bought this over Amazon thinking it was going to be a real novelization. Instead, it is more along the lines of a children's book. There is size 12, Times New Roman font, but it is 120 or pages and there are pictures from the movie in the center of the book. It is not what I was hoping for.
If you are looking for a real novelization, giving insight into the character's actions and thoughts...this is not it.The Last Airbender Movie Novelization (Avatar) Overview

So This is How it Ends (Avatars, Book 1) ReviewKali lives in New York, and has a tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe. Tigre lives in Chile. He likes animals better then people, but rainstorms make him a little twitchy and he usually ends up running in them. Sort-of. Venus is a perfect teenage pop-star that everyone adores. Almost. Amon is an Egyptian boy who thinks he's got it all figured out. And Gus is a normal teenager who lives in LA with his older brother.
You'd never imagine that any of them would ever have anything to do with each other. Much less something in common. Or that there was any way that most of them would ever meet. Most of them would agree with you.
But when the world seems to end, they are the ones left standing.
I just have to say, this was a really good book. In fact, the main reason I didn't give it a Gold Award was because the ending cliffhanger was so huge and dramatic and cliffhangery that I threw the book. It's just mean to do that when I don't have access to the next book! So, I suppose I'm being selfish in withholding the Gold Award, but it's frustrating! That, however, is a horrible reason to not read this book. Just be forewarned, and maybe have the next book coming soon.
Two more things;
Aside from the fact that there is a TV show called Avatar, and a movie in production called The Avatar, neither of which have anything to do with this story, I could totally see this as a movie. *Hint, Hint*
Tui Sutherland's website is adorable and hilarious, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
And no, I don't know her, but I bet she's cool.

The Tenth Avatar ReviewMr. Naiman has written a great book for long travels or cold nights by the fireplace. For one think it is just the right length for a long trip abroad. Second, it has many references to global locations with a lot of local history and color. Showed solid research. A bit on the intellectual side, but lots of action. Highly recommended. The Tenth Avatar OverviewFour strangers journey to the Far East, each escaping a bitter past. Drawn together by an ancient prophecy, they climb toward a downed aircraft in the Himalaya, unaware that the plane s cargo will change the world forever...The Tenth Avatar is the ultimate high adventure. Set in the turbulent 1930 s with locations in Europe, Asia, and America, Avatar follows four strangers toward a prophetic battle at the roof of the world. Through its frightening conclusion, Avatar presents a nuclear warning to the 21st Century that remains unheeded.

Savant's Blood Series Book 1: Shadow of the Avatar ReviewI picked this book randomly and was immediately hooked about 20-30 pages in. This is a long book. The main character Wren is a no non-sense, fast-thinking girl who is incredibly agile. She is very likable as a character with a strong will without being made out to be overly feminine or masculine. Will Greenway created a universe that is very different from your usual fantasy or pure science fiction novels. There is a mixture of mythology, magic, and science. I think it's refreshing. Towards the end of the book there is this big game with lots of chasing, fighting, and generally jolly good fun. I have also read the "Reality's Plaything" series by the same author. I think this (Savant's Blood) series is easier to get involved with early on. There are quite a bit of typos in all of them, but they don't detract from the books much. One does not read these books for their literary values. That is not the main point. If you like action-packed novels but cannot help but be repulsed by excessive violence and gore, or if you like to let your imagination run free, this is a fun series you might enjoy.Savant's Blood Series Book 1: Shadow of the Avatar OverviewHecate, goddess of the moon and dark magic, wants a new body and eight summer old savant Liandra Kergatha is it. Torn from her mother's arms, the young girl is spirited away to another world to undergo the ritual of succorunding, the creation of an avatar. Before the procedure can be completed, the temple is attacked and Liandra escapes into the city with the bindings half complete and her name and memories of her former life wiped clean.Possessing great natural skill and many hidden powers, the young girl perseveres on her own and a decade later becomes Wren, one of the greatest master thieves in Corwin. Unfortunately for Wren, lost is not forgotten, and after a bloody encounter with an avatar, Hecate's baneful attention is drawn to her once again. What started with a decade old kidnapping becomes a war that escalates into a conflict involving powerful immorts, wizards, and otherworldly creatures as Wren seeks help and wins favor with the legendary clan of the Felspars. To survive this conflict Wren must learn her origins, befriend amazing allies, and tap into the secret powers of her birthright. Even as she rises to the challenge, she discovers that Hecate is not the only foe she must watch out for...
