The Matrix Has You ReviewThe Matrix Has You As a novice to the Matrix world, I was fascinated by this book. It explains the virtual reality world in terms the layman can understand and appreciate. It made the viewing of the movie Avatar even more exciting and realistic. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wonders what our futures will look like. The Matrix Has You OverviewThe Matrix Has You by Thomas Ousterhout brings the fringes of cutting edge technology and the human imagination together and creates a revolutionary vision of the future that blurs the lines between man and machine. Using the popular film The Matrix as the metaphor, Ousterhout builds an impeccably supported argument that humans and machines, and virtual world technology, are headed for a common future where human perceptions and virtual experience will merge. The resulting "Matrix-like" reality is not only possible, according to the author, it is closer than we imagine. Using the most recent references in popular and scientific literature, as well as the input and prognostications of leaders in the field of cognition, robotics, artificial intelligence, and brain-computer research, The Matrix Has You paints a future for humanity that is both awesome and ominous. Written in clear and accessible prose, author Ousterhout has produced a book that is both provocative and entertaining.

Second Lives: A Journey Through Virtual Worlds ReviewThere are tons of books about virtual worlds, especially about second life. All of the ones I have seen (before this one) were more or less instructionbooks for people who don't have a mind of their own to click around in a virtual environment and collect some basic information, or artefacts of self celebration of residing avatars.
This one is nothing like that. Guest focusses on his personal research and experience in these environments, for the biggest part in secondlife.com . He gives us an interesting and sometimes even touching account of the fact, that these worlds are populated by real humans and not by game characters. Even for me as a long year (but not veteran) player of this environment, the book had an enormous amount of new and fascinating facts on the history of SL, that usually would not get published, since Guest partly approached it from the underground and not from the shiny surface.
I regrett I never met him there...Second Lives: A Journey Through Virtual Worlds OverviewWe've always dreamed of perfect places: Eden, heaven, Utopia. Imagine gambling without loss, love without heartbreak, sex without exposure, experience without risk. Welcome to the fascinating world of online virtual reality, the land of invented places and populations that is entered and inhabited every week by nearly fifty million people worldwide. Each participant creates a virtual body, works at virtual jobs, and makes virtual friends and family. In Second Lives, Tim Guest, an internationally acclaimed young journalist, takes us on a revelatory journey through the electronic looking glass as he investigates one of the most bizarre phenomena of the twenty-first century. From Second Life to EverQuest and beyond, here are the computer-generated environments and characters that can easily become more engrossing and fulfilling than earthly existence. With the click of a mouse you can select eye color, face shape, height–you can even give yourself wings. Your character, or avatar, can build houses, make and sell works of art, earn money, get married and divorced. In this fascinating and groundbreaking book, Guest meets people who found meaningful love and friendship despite never having met in person, catches up with the companies that have used virtual worlds to make big money, investigates the U.S. military's massive online global model that trains soldiers to fight anyone anywhere, and travels all the way to gaming-crazed Korea to get a taste for just how big this phenomenon really is.At first glance, these new computer-generated places seem free from trouble and sorrow. But Guest examines the dark side of this technology too, including the online criminals who plague imaginary worlds, from cyber mafiosos and prostitutes to real hackers and terrorists. It seems that one cannot escape greed, corruption, and human weakness–even inside a computer screen. Are these virtual worlds a way to enhance life or to escape it? Guest explores this question personally as he lets himself be transported into myriad parallel universes. By turns provocative, inspiring, and disturbing, Second Lives is a crucial book for this millennium. After all, real life is so twentieth century.Advance praise for Second Lives"Tim Guest is a young writer with the literary goods. My Life in Orange, his hit memoir of growing up in a commune, looked at his past; his riveting new book, Second Lives, looks at our future: the world of virtual reality and the spellbound people who inhabit it. The book is some kind of revelation–by turns compelling, chilling, and illuminating. Curious, intelligent, offbeat, and artful, Guest is at the beginning of a big career."——John Lahr, senior drama critic, The New Yorker, author of Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton Praise from England for Second Lives"An anthropological adventure but also Guest's personal voyage . . . a fascinating portrait of rainbow landscapes and their inhabitants."–Time Out London"Rich and colourful . . . an important mapping of a new social frontier."–The Guardian"Remarkably timely."–The Sunday Telegraph"Astonishing."–The Sunday Times

Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future ReviewVirtual World. Emotion. Why do these two words seem so separate? Is it because the technology masks our emotions with a gilded frame of ones and zeros? Is it that we are surrounded by technology so much that we forget our own humanity? Is it as Thoreau said, that men have become the tools of their tools? Or is it instead that humanity is offering more of itself into the technology that it creates? Deep questions which are not often approached, and when they are approached they are not often approached wisely. What is an 'emotional future', and do I want one? Do I have a choice? People get uncomfortable with such questions. These are dangerous questions, which usually means that they are good questions.
Of course, I got a gold paper clip with the book. This was somewhat of a novelty for me, and also gave me pause.
When I looked at the cover of this book, these were things that I thought about a bit. I wasn't sure what to expect. Two blurry avatars kissing on the cover of the book hint at romance, a topic that I cannot comment on beyond half a life's sojourns. What is this about?
So, I read the book.
The book was a quick read. It was well written and, more importantly, easy to read. The large text hints that this is bifocal friendly, but what this reader liked was that it was just plain easy to read. So often books fail in the mechanics department by not catering to their business properly, and I was pleased and even encouraged to read this book after glancing in its covers. Large text is encouraging; it is the promise that the book is thinner than it looks - and it is fairly thin.
The reader takes a journey into the concept of a virtual world - but not through the technical explanations. Refreshingly, it simply said that virtual worlds are, that they exist, and that they are just as real to virtual world users as the rest of their lives. That virtual communities have become powerful on the internet, and that virtual worlds are a promise - and a premise - of things to come. That virtual worlds are tied to internet seems to go without saying, and yet so many people treat them as separate. The authors spared us this deviation, instead focusing on virtual worlds as a subset of the internet. This was refreshing.
The connections between technology and emotion are as well defined as the fuzzy nexus can be, and the authors managed to capture that with a basis in humanity and society rather than technology. This book isn't so much about virtual worlds as much as it is about real people being affected and perhaps changed by virtual worlds. The separation of brain, heart and gut resonates with a truth that cannot be measured empirically but will gain some nods from readers - and that forms a powerful base for the book itself.
From this basis in how we perceive the world around us, the book manages to make stops poignantly. Virtual worlds are approached as reality, then as new economies and new markets with potential for reinventing things. The second to last chapter - titled the same as the book title - brings it all together nicely, and the very last chapter is 'Virtual World Generated Fiction'.
In all, this book answered some of the questions I had when I looked at the cover - more importantly, it got me asking different questions. While short, this is a thought provoking book which promises much to the thoughtful. It is not a marketing book, it is not an economic paper - it is not a technology book. What this book is about is our use of technology and how technology affects us and connects us - perhaps even separating us in some instances. It carries with it some warnings of a future of controversy which transcends what we think normal now.
Overall, this book gets a KnowProSE.com 9 out of 10. It isn't for the experts; it was not written for experts. The book was - convincingly - written for the average person who would like to consider a future that has stealthily entered through the front door of millions of people, disguised as entertainment. Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future is a preview of coming attractions which only guides the imagination on the rails provided by a reality which is not so virtual anymore.Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future Overview"Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future is a preview of coming attractions which only guides the imagination on the rails provided by a reality which is not so virtual anymore.' - Taran Rampersad www.knowprose.comVirtual Worlds are becoming an embedded part of our culture and the implications for every aspect of society are unimaginable. This 122-page easy-to-read book discusses the potential that Virtual Worlds have to dramatically alter the emotional code of the human race, and also reviews the opportunities for individuals, corporations, advertising and media companies to build personal and corporate marketing campaigns in Virtual Worlds. This first reader generated book not only will open the eyes of readers to this completely new world but, in itself, will become an immersive experience for readers that could keep them involved, engaged and emotionally connected to a virtual world community experience for years ahead.

The Unofficial Tourists' Guide to Second Life ReviewAs a 35-year veteran of online worlds, everything from irc to chat to the Palace to the Sims, I was skeptical about Second Life. Whatever fancy technology is involved, people are still people, and I figured it was in essence a chat room with new bells and whistles. And it is that--the core behaviors of online chat have not changed much in 35 years--but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is much more to Second Life than chat. I was helped in this discovery by the authors of this book. The official book from Linden Labs mostly tells you how to do things. This book goes another step, and suggests things to do. The news media seem mostly focused on commerce and sex in Second Life. And there is that. The people in Second Life are similar to the cyber-denizens you will find anywhere online. The real difference here is the places: the worlds that people have built. Even if you never talk to anyone else, you can have amazing experiences simply exploring: a mystical forest, a sinister cathedral in the sky, an amusement park where you can ride a roller coaster, a Victorian village, an urban wasteland, and romantic sunset beaches are among thousands of places imagined and created, not by the owners of Second Life, but by its "residents." This guide helped me find all of them, giving hours of enjoyment even to this ancient cyber-skeptic.
I also appreciate that the authors have taken some time to bring readers up to speed on the culture of Second Life's residents. In any online community--well, any community really, online or off--there is always a subtext that new people struggle to understand, consisting of previous events and interpersonal struggles. The authors have shed light on this history for us in a most amusing way. In short, I'm grateful to have read this book at the beginning of my Second Life experience; it was very, very helpful and has increased my enjoyment of Second Life considerably. The Unofficial Tourists' Guide to Second Life OverviewImagine an enormous, breathtaking virtual world to explore, where land can be bought for less than a dollar and new construction is limited only by your imagination. An online tourist destination where you can shop for virtual designer clothes in a shopping mall atop a live volcano, teleport to an underwater gig by U2, before taking a new friend back to your personal spaceship for virtual coffee or...well, you get the idea.

Scripting Recipes for Second Life ReviewThis book provides a very basic introduction to LSL scripting. Everyone of the scripts in the book can be obtained as freebies within SL and much more can be learned about LSL in the SL Wiki and various other online tutorials and references. Speaking of references, this book had none. One of the few reasons I keep programming books around is that its nice to be able to flip open a book and get a quick answer to a programming question. Well, forget it. This book has no reference section and a marginally useful index.Scripting Recipes for Second Life OverviewSecond Life is an Internet-based virtual world where residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize and participate in individual and group activities. Another major activity is the ability to create and trade/sell items and services to other residents. However, to create advanced items you must program in the Linden Scripting Language. This book presents many common objects in Second Life, with complete Linden Scripting Language examples. For each example, you are provided with copy/modifyable objects for all examples in the Second Life world. These examples are presented as a series of recipes, which are useful by themselves, or as a starting point for more complex objects. The recipes span a wide array of uses. Useful recipes for buildings provide elevators, teleport pads, and locking doors. Vehicles are covered with example cars, boats and helicopters. The video game side of Second Life is demonstrated with an assortment of gun and bullet recipes. Recipes for wearable items such as glittering jewelry, jet packs, parachutes, and anti-push orbs are also presented. Recipes for slide shows, cannons, weather stations, and other miscellaneous items are also covered. Commerce is a huge part of Second Life. Two chapters are dedicated to commerce objects, such as tip jars, rental scripts and vendor kiosks.

The Making of Second Life: Notes from the New World ReviewIt can be hard to justify buying a book about a place as fluid and temporal as Second Life. In a world with a constantly-shifting, user-created landscape, what could one write that will be of any use in the next few years?
Given this challenge, Wagner James Au crafts an excellent book about the history and nature of Second Life. Leveraging his status as a former employee and virtual embedded journalist, Au shares with the reader his well-researched subjective viewpoint into a world of fluid forms and fluid personalities. Touching on such topics as the economy, socialization, politics, the nature of self, and the interaction between the real world and the artificial one, the book weaves a narrative that is one part company history, one part personal experience, and one part industry commentary.
While the book overall is an interesting read, I found myself having to swallow some significant typos and informational errors. This is a pet peeve of mine, and I feel the book really could have used a second editorial pass and some fact-checking (for instance, the 3D embedded content viewer inDuality ([...]) is made by Pelican Crossing, not Penguin Crossing). Print is not the web, and sadly, once one publishes an edition of a book with this many errors, it's published forever.
But if you have a tolerance for typos and a willingness to do your own fact-checking (which will be necessary anyway, given the changeable nature of the subject matter), this book is a good read and can serve as a starting point for further forays into the field of 3D interactive worlds, and Second Life specifically. The Making of Second Life: Notes from the New World Overview

The State of Play: Law, Games, and Virtual Worlds (Ex Machina: Law, Technology, and Society) ReviewWhen Judge Richard Posner first called himself and other legal academics "intellectual entrepreneurs," he was at least half-kidding (in a Chicago kind of way). But in recent years the "market" for legal scholarship has become among the most cutthroat in the world. Professors seem desperate to be the first to homestead new territory in any emerging market.
The work of economists like Edward Castronova has demonstrated that virtual worlds constitute a new frontier, ripe for cutting edge scholarship. The authors in this book are staking their claim to its legal issues. But just being the first to a topic does not mean you have anything interesting to say about it. Castronova's work is interesting, but you don't need this book to understand it. The remaining essays in this book reminded me of cyber-squatted domain names. "What will happen?" they all seem to ask, but they don't offer many answers or even interesting speculations.
The real problem here is that law exists to dealing with real-world consequences, while virtual worlds exist to eliminate them. Law may eventually get some traction in virtual reality, but it hasn't happened yet. If you want to be there when it does, don't read a law book - get yourself into a MMPORG. Just don't plan on keeping your job or your marriage. The State of Play: Law, Games, and Virtual Worlds (Ex Machina: Law, Technology, and Society) Overview
The State of Play presents an essential first step in understanding how new digital worlds will change the future of our universe. Millions of people around the world inhabit virtual words: multiplayer online games where characters live, love, buy, trade, cheat, steal, and have every possible kind of adventure. Far more complicated and sophisticated than early video games, people now spend countless hours in virtual universes like Second Life and Star Wars Galaxies not to shoot space invaders but to create new identities, fall in love, build cities, make rules, and break them.

As digital worlds become increasingly powerful and lifelike, people will employ them for countless real-world purposes, including commerce, education, medicine, law enforcement, and military training. Inevitably, real-world law will regulate them. But should virtual worlds be fully integrated into our real-world legal system or should they be treated as separate jurisdictions with their own forms of dispute resolution? What rules should govern virtual communities? Should the law step in to protect property rights when virtual items are destroyed or stolen?

These questions, and many more, are considered in The State of Play, where legal experts, game designers, and policymakers explore the boundaries of free speech, intellectual property, and creativity in virtual worlds. The essays explore both the emergence of law in multiplayer online games and how we can use virtual worlds to study real-world social interactions and test real-world laws.

Contributors include: Jack M. Balkin, Richard A. Bartle, Yochai Benkler, Caroline Bradley, Edward Castronova, Susan P. Crawford, Julian Dibbell, A. Michael Froomkin, James Grimmelmann, David R. Johnson, Dan Hunter, Raph Koster, F. Gregory Lastowka, Beth Simone Noveck, Cory Ondrejka, Tracy Spaight, and Tal Zarsky.

Virtual Law: Navigating the Legal Landscape of Virtual Worlds ReviewEveryone who operates a business that is involved with virtual worlds should be glad that this book was written. As everyone in that situation knows, virtual worlds give rise to a huge number of legal questions, and this book collects those and answers to them all in one place using a writing style that's very readable even for non lawyers like myself.
One thing that I really appreciated about the book is that it describes the degree of certainty associated with different topics. For example, each chapter ends with a section on "open questions" relating to the subject of the chapter, whereas there are other places where the text states very definitively that a given thing occurring in a virtual world would or would not be treated exactly the same way as elsewhere on the Web or in the physical world.
Another thing that I appreciated about the book was how clearly it is written. While it does include case law, etc. that is likely to be of intellectual interest to lawyers specializing in virtual law, it also includes a lot of very practical and accessible information for those of us who have business interests in virtual worlds.
I think it will be particularly useful to three groups of people. First, it will provide a lot of information for people running in world only businesses for which legal advice is probably prohibitively expensive. Second, it will provide small and medium size businesses operating in virtual worlds enough of an understanding of the issues to judge when it's likely to be cost-effective to seek out specialized legal advice and when it's not. Third, I think it will be helpful to the large companies operating in virtual worlds. Many of them have their own legal staff, but they are often are unfamiliar with virtual worlds. This book will help them get up to speed quickly (and avoid slowing down their companies virtual world initiatives).
I am in the second category, and I already feel I got my money's worth from the book in terms of not having to pay for unnecessary legal advice and / or worry that I should be checking things with a lawyer (particularly given that currently most "regular" lawyers are not very knowledgeable about virtual worlds). All in all, I found this book to be extremely helpful on a first read, and it's one I am sure I will refer back to in the future.
The one topic I wish would have received greater attention in the book is jurisdiction since so much interaction in virtual worlds involves people in different countries.
Virtual Law: Navigating the Legal Landscape of Virtual Worlds OverviewThis book introduces readers to the emerging and exciting world of virtual law. It examines current cases and legislation impacting virtual world providers and users, and makes predictions about the future application of current law. It addresses the application of intellectual property law (copyright, trademark, and patent), criminal law, property law, contract law, securities law, tax law, and civil procedure. It also provides practical advice to lawyers who wish to create a virtual world presence for their practice or who have clients with virtual world connections. The book includes extensive appendices listing in-world and web-based resources for practitioners and legal scholars.

The New Digital Shoreline: How Web 2.0 and Millennials Are Revolutionizing Higher Education ReviewThe New Digital Shoreline: How Web 2.0 and Millennials Are Revolutionizing Higher Education offers a fine survey of the complex effects of Web 2.0 on higher education, documenting forces that educators need to know about to modify interactions with students and peers. From understanding how the population of the new Web is different with different expectations to understanding the new mind-set of Web 2.0, this is packed with details supporting a reinvention of higher education to meet these new perspectives - a support which goes beyond just adding new technology to the learning mix. Higher education collections must have this new approach! The New Digital Shoreline: How Web 2.0 and Millennials Are Revolutionizing Higher Education OverviewTwo seismic forces beyond our control - the advent of Web 2.0 and the inexorable influx of tech-savvy Millennials on campus - are shaping what Roger McHaney calls 'The New Digital Shoreline" of higher education. Failure to chart its contours, and adapt, poses a major threat to higher education as we know it.These forces demand that we as educators reconsider the learning theories, pedagogies, and practices on which we have depended, and modify our interactions with students and peers-all without sacrificing good teaching, or lowering standards, to improve student outcomes. Achieving these goals requires understanding how the indigenous population of this new shoreline is different. These students aren't necessarily smarter or technologically superior, but they do have different expectations. Their approaches to learning are shaped by social networking and other forms of convenient, computer-enabled and mobile communication devices; by instant access to an over-abundance of information; by technologies that have conferred the ability to personalize and customize their world to a degree never seen before; and by time-shifting and time-slicing.As well as understanding students' assumptions and expectations, we have no option but to familiarize ourselves with the characteristics and applications of Web 2.0-essentially a new mind set about how to use Internet technologies around the concepts of social computing, social media, content sharing, filtering, and user experience.Roger McHaney not only deftly analyzes how Web 2.0 is shaping the attitudes and motivations of today's students, but guides us through the topography of existing and emerging digital media, environments, applications, platforms and devices - not least the impact of e-readers and tablets on the future of the textbook - and the potential they have for disrupting teacher-student relationships; and, if appropriately used, for engaging students in their learning. This book argues for nothing less than a reinvention of higher education to meet these new realities. Just adding technology to our teaching practices will not suffice. McHaney calls for a complete rethinking of our practice of teaching to meet the needs of this emerging world and envisioning ourselves as connected, co-learners with our students.

The Virtual Worlds Handbook: How to Use Second Life and Other 3D Virtual Environments ReviewThe "Second Life" world has grown far beyond the original dreams and ideas of the founders. While it has primarily been a social networking site, the opportunity to use the virtual world as a teaching platform has been discovered, explored and developed by thousands of schools from elementary to university level. While there are several books on how to use Second Life, this book covers the use of Second Life with a specific view towards creating an educational environment.
The book begins with the simple steps of signing on to Second Life, creating an account and the basic rules of getting started. The second part of the book gets more into the teaching concepts the authors have developed and reports on what they have had their students do. Must have book for 3DLE designers and all corporate learning leaders.
The community involved in putting this book together is AMAZING! Hats off to Karl and Tony. Loved the insights by Randy Hinrichs of 2b3d (someone who played a critical part in opening my eyes to the possibilities Virtual Immersive Environments hold for the future of learning).Learning in 3D: Adding a New Dimension to Enterprise Learning and Collaboration (Essential Knowledge Resource (Pfeiffer)) Overview
Praise for Learning in 3D

"Learning is the key to our future and powerful learning will result from immersive, interactive, and creative 3D designs. "Karl Kapp and Tony O'Driscoll are, amazingly, both the best theorists and practitioners in using virtual worlds in every type of educational venue. Many will love their vision, but I am more hooked on their practicality and hand-holding."-Clark Aldrich, author, Learning Online with Games, Simulations, and Virtual Worlds: Strategies for Online Instruction
"Kapp and O'Driscoll nailed it. The right balance of case studies, theories and practical advice for any organization pursing the use of virtual worlds for learning. If you are interested in virtual worlds for learning and collaboration, this book is for you." -David A. Manning, managing partner, Performance Development Group
"The big contribution of Learning in 3D is that it provides research informed guidance and practical tips and techniques for using 3D virtual environments to achieve real business results...the case studies are outstanding." -Lisa Clune, president, Kaplan EduNeering
"As the world makes its way through a period of significant change, Learning in 3D couldn't come at a better time. Second Life: The Official Guide ReviewThis book was a major disappointment.
There is very little How TO info in the book if you are not planning to create objects and try to make money in the sim. If you are just a visitor who wants a pleasant time sightseeing and chatting with others, then this book will disappoint.
A large part of the book is a tribute to selected SL residents who have made money in the sim. Nice for them, but who else cares?
Another chapter describes interesting specific locations in SL. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the sites are obsolete and gone.
Even if you are interested in learning scripting language to try to sell products in SL, there have got to be better instructional manuals out there than this.
When I had real HowTo questions, the answer was rarely found in the book.
I truly felt I had wasted my money in purchasing this book. You can learn as much useful info at the initial Help Islands and inworld tutorials once you enter SL.Second Life: The Official Guide Overview

Designing Your Second Life ReviewThis is a useful book ONLY if you are terribly new to Second Life. I've only been in SL for 3 months and knew everything in the first half of the book. I learned a few things in the second half, but "designing" implies more than what this book offers. It sounded like a book for those who wanted to go beyond editing appearance, but it's not. It only briefly touches on more advanced concepts. If you need beginner's information, try A Beginner's Guide to Second Life or Second Life: the offical guide for a decent tour book.Designing Your Second Life OverviewWhether your second, virtual life has just begun, or you've been"in-world" for a long time, a successful and rewarding experiencedepends on your mastery of design. Everything from your avatar to yourhome, your clothes to your behavior says something about who you areand the way others see you. In this book Rebecca Tapley—"Mera Luan" inSL—shows you how to design everything from bodies to earrings, cars tocastles, for improved appearance, function, and usability. Real-worldtopics such as urban planning, color theory, user experience, interiordesign, and landscaping are mapped to SL conditions. Learn how to spotthe best skin and hair, clothing, architecture and construction, property for sale, and more. In addition, Rebecca's insights andobservations on Second Life etiquette, manners, customs, and othersubtle socio-cultural realities will help you make your way throughthis new and sometimes baffling world. Have a more rewarding secondlife by learning how to:
Create a realistic or fantastical avatar
Make gorgeous clothes and other luxury goods
Build impressive homes and planned communities
Develop whole islands
Establish a social community and career Life.

This Book Is Overdue: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All (P.S.) Review"This Book Is Overdue" isn't going to be for everyone (and I still haven't figured out how it got saddled with that baffling subtitle), but Marilyn Johnson has done a great job of putting human faces on a profession that is often either beloved or ridiculed. The stereotype of the prim, shushing matron notwithstanding, Johnson's almost obsessive exploration of the roles, subcultures and future of librarians and librarianship in an era of shrinking budgets, digital media, cyberculture and declining readership turns out to be pretty compelling, enshrining a number of librarians who have changed their field, and in some ways, even our world.
Frequently depicting librarians as a breed apart who are nonetheless indispensable to mere mortals in search of information, no matter how arcane, she has written a book that celebrates the eccentricity and sheer diversity within their profession--a profession that in some ways is changing at breakneck speed and in others is securely rooted in tradition. Her topics veer from the librarians who sued the government, post-"Patriot" Act, to keep their patrons' records out of the hands of government spies, to avid blogger librarians, to the librarian avatars of Second Life, to the changing face of the New York Public Library, to name just a few, carrying readers along for a decidedly unconventional but fascinating ride.

I found the chapters on Radical Reference--activist librarians who take to the streets, using smart phones to dispense information--and the Second Life librarians to be particularly interesting, mainly because they represent such a departure from the traditional roles we're all familiar with. But as a writer who has relied on archivists' expertise to help me research four books, I have a special appreciation for the skills of that subdiscipline and especially enjoyed the chapter about the challenges they face as well.
If you really (REALLY) like books, if you remember the libraries of your youth with fondness (I kept "smelling" the old libraries from my childhood as I read the sections about bricks and mortar libraries), if you're an information junkie of any kind, you'll probably want to add this book to your reading list. There's a lot more going on within those hallowed walls than you may realize, and it may give you a whole new perspective. If knowledge is indeed power, then librarians may well be the unsung power brokers of our civilization.
Four stars for this unexpected pleasure. This Book Is Overdue: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All (P.S.) Overview

Synthetic Worlds: The Business and Culture of Online Games ReviewI expected something a little more "rigorous" from Dr. Ed. I believe though that he takes an excellent first swipe at virtual worlds.
For people already playing these games the first 50 or so pages are boring. But he obviously covers this material so that even lay people can quickly be brought up to speed on his other topics. He sometimes slips back into these rudimentary explanations but I believe it is an effort to help the larger market.
He covers a wide variety of topics in this book. Discussions of property rights within VR worlds, violence within VR worlds, and the actual value of VR money and items. The variety of topics leads to a slight rambling feel in the book and some thiness on the arguements. However, I thought everything was adequately covered. I was looking for something of a "truer" economic discussion of synthetic worlds but he teased me. He does write an explanation, and defense, of synthetic economies and problems within them. For me though, I thought this was going to be all 300 or so pages when it was just about 75.
If there were more books like this published I would have given him 3 stars but since this is going to be the start in a long, long, long series of books I will give him 4 for breaking ground. He probably should have milked the material for two books. :)
If you have play these games and have and a tidbit of economics in you then buy the book and enjoy. I am going to read his papers now in an effort to get that fix.
SeanSynthetic Worlds: The Business and Culture of Online Games OverviewFrom EverQuest to World of Warcraft, online games have evolved from the exclusive domain of computer geeks into an extraordinarily lucrative staple of the entertainment industry. People of all ages and from all walks of life now spend thousands of hours—and dollars—partaking in this popular new brand of escapism. But the line between fantasy and reality is starting to blur. Players have created virtual societies with governments and economies of their own whose currencies now trade against the dollar on eBay at rates higher than the yen. And the players who inhabit these synthetic worlds are starting to spend more time online than at their day jobs.In Synthetic Worlds, Edward Castronova offers the first comprehensive look at the online game industry, exploring its implications for business and culture alike. He starts with the players, giving us a revealing look into the everyday lives of the gamers—outlining what they do in their synthetic worlds and why. He then describes the economies inside these worlds to show how they might dramatically affect real world financial systems, from potential disruptions of markets to new business horizons. Ultimately, he explores the long-term social consequences of online games: If players can inhabit worlds that are more alluring and gratifying than reality, then how can the real world ever compete? Will a day ever come when we spend more time in these synthetic worlds than in our own? Or even more startling, will a day ever come when such questions no longer sound alarmist but instead seem obsolete? With more than ten million active players worldwide—and with Microsoft and Sony pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into video game development—online games have become too big to ignore. Synthetic Worlds spearheads our efforts to come to terms with this virtual reality and its concrete effects."Illuminating. . . . Castronova's analysis of the economics of fun is intriguing. Virtual-world economies are designed to make the resulting game interesting and enjoyable for their inhabitants. Many games follow a rags-to-riches storyline, for example. But how can all the players end up in the top 10%? Simple: the upwardly mobile human players need only be a subset of the world's population. An underclass of computer-controlled 'bot' citizens, meanwhile, stays poor forever. Mr. Castronova explains all this with clarity, wit, and a merciful lack of academic jargon."—The Economist "Synthetic Worlds is a surprisingly profound book about the social, political, and economic issues arising from the emergence of vast multiplayer games on the Internet. What Castronova has realized is that these games, where players contribute considerable labor in exchange for things they value, are not merely like real economies, they are real economies, displaying inflation, fraud, Chinese sweatshops, and some surprising in-game innovations."—Tim Harford, Chronicle of Higher Education

Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human ReviewI felt obliged to respond after reading prior reviewers who gave this average ratings. Fair enough to be disappointed in this if, for some reason, you expected it to be an light-weight page-turner intended for Second Life residents.
This *is* an academic book by a professor of anthropology who uses plenty of footnotes. The target audience does *not* consist of those already well familiar with the intricacies of social customs in Second Life. And yes, there are references to anthropological thinkers throughout. Some of us actually like that kind of thing.
For its target audience, this is a great book. There are a limited number of academic books that treat the subject of contemporary virtual worlds carefully, thoughtfully, and well. This one really stands out as a study based on extensive ethnographic research and a firm grasp of the available literature. In my opinion, the audience is not just anthropologists, but anyone with a college degree and a serious interest in Second Life as a novel medium for social interaction. The style is educated, but accessible, and it is full of entertaining anecdotes and observations.Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human Overview
