The Digital Dialectic: New Essays on New Media (Leonardo Books) ReviewThe title of this collection gives a clue of what the reader is headed for - the term "dialectic" is most often connected with philosophical ponderings or Marxist manifestos - this is not just another puff piece exhorting the brave new world and global village of interconnectiveness, this is a series of eleven well written essays delving into New Media Theory.
Grouped into four sections: "The Real and the Ideal", "The Body and the Machine", "The Medium and the Message", and "The World and the Screen", this collection explores the new way of being and thinking that digital technology elicits. An important work that refuses to slip into pedanticism; thought provoking and entertaining. A must read for anyone who wants to be a subject rather than an object in the Information Age.The Digital Dialectic: New Essays on New Media (Leonardo Books) Overview

The Matrix Has You ReviewThe Matrix Has You As a novice to the Matrix world, I was fascinated by this book. It explains the virtual reality world in terms the layman can understand and appreciate. It made the viewing of the movie Avatar even more exciting and realistic. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wonders what our futures will look like. The Matrix Has You OverviewThe Matrix Has You by Thomas Ousterhout brings the fringes of cutting edge technology and the human imagination together and creates a revolutionary vision of the future that blurs the lines between man and machine. Using the popular film The Matrix as the metaphor, Ousterhout builds an impeccably supported argument that humans and machines, and virtual world technology, are headed for a common future where human perceptions and virtual experience will merge. The resulting "Matrix-like" reality is not only possible, according to the author, it is closer than we imagine. Using the most recent references in popular and scientific literature, as well as the input and prognostications of leaders in the field of cognition, robotics, artificial intelligence, and brain-computer research, The Matrix Has You paints a future for humanity that is both awesome and ominous. Written in clear and accessible prose, author Ousterhout has produced a book that is both provocative and entertaining.

Digitizing Race: Visual Cultures of the Internet (Electronic Mediations) ReviewFor those of you with a soft spot for the anthropomorphized cartoon dog surfing the Internet, Lisa Nakamura abolishes such nostalgia, and misunderstanding. Half way through Digitizing Race, she coolly declares `...nobody believes anymore that on the Internet nobody knows you're a dog...' (p.155).Interrogating the myth of online disembodiment, and the concomitant deceit of neoliberal colour-blindness is what essentially coheres this book. Contrary to the utopian readings of techno-culture, analyzing Internet space as a site of racial re-embodiment is at the heart of Nakamura's project. ...
[...]Digitizing Race: Visual Cultures of the Internet (Electronic Mediations) OverviewIn the nineties, neoliberalism simultaneously provided the context for the Internet's rapid uptake in the United States and discouraged public conversations about racial politics. At the same time many scholars lauded the widespread use of text-driven interfaces as a solution to the problem of racial intolerance. Today's online world is witnessing text-driven interfaces such as e-mail and instant messaging giving way to far more visually intensive and commercially driven media forms that not only reveal but showcase people's racial, ethnic, and gender identity.

Lisa Nakamura, a leading scholar in the examination of race in digital media, uses case studies of popular yet rarely examined uses of the Internet such as pregnancy Web sites, instant messaging, and online petitions and quizzes to look at the emergence of race-, ethnic-, and gender-identified visual cultures.

While popular media such as Hollywood cinema continue to depict nonwhite nonmales as passive audiences or consumers of digital media rather than as producers, Nakamura argues the contrary—with examples ranging from Jennifer Lopez music videos; films including the Matrix trilogy, Gattaca, and Minority Report; and online joke sites—that users of color and women use the Internet to vigorously articulate their own types of virtual community, avatar bodies, and racial politics.

Lisa Nakamura is associate professor of speech communication and Asian American studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity, and Identity on the Internet and coeditor, with Beth Kolko and Gilbert Rodman, of Race in Cyberspace.

Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards ReviewI had the opportunity to read through this book over the last week, and I'm just floored by how much good information it's got in it. This book is years of Patrick's experiences running successful forums (22 forums now, I believe!) and all the tips, tricks and wisdom he's picked up during those years. I ran a moderately successful forum years ago, and would have saved myself months of headache and heartache had I the information in this book at my fingertips back then.
The book is definitely opinionated - these are Patrick's recommendations based on his experiences, and it shows. His voice is natural, and the wording is down to earth. This isn't some theoretical treatise, but a 'from the trenches' view of what works, what doesn't, and why.
The book includes many sample forms which have example language to use for welcoming members to your forum, working with moderators, dealing with abusive or disruptive visitors, and much more. They're all available on the book's website too, so you don't need to retype it all in, but can quickly customize them to fit your own needs .
The one thing lacking in this book is that it doesn't go in to much detail about the major forum packages out there, so the reader who is just starting out will have to do some more research as to what packages have which features discussed in the book. Having said that, this keeps the focus of the book more on the human/people side of internet forums, and doesn't devolve in to a technical manual. I would have preferred a small feature comparison of the big forum systems out there, but I'm more of a technically-inclined person to begin with. If you're not technically inclined, you likely won't even notice the information not there.
Bottom line: if you're thinking of starting a web-based community, or have one and aren't sure how to manage it, this book is a must-have. It will save you weeks, if not months, of getting up to speed and being as effective as possible with your forums.
Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards OverviewEvery day, millions of users log on to their favorite online forums and interact with others to get advice and discuss everything from the latest news and trends to their hobbies, professions, and whatever else strikes their fancy. Administrators have to lead these communities, deal with difficult users, and choose moderators. Legal constraints, spammers, and technical issues can turn the excitement of running an online community into chaos. With the right guidance, however, running forums can be a pleasure. Patrick O'Keefe has spent years developing and managing online communities. Now, he shows readers how to make the right decisions about every aspect of their forums, including:' choosing a name and domain name' picking the right software' deciding on user options like avatars and private messaging' setting guidelines and dealing with violators' ensuring that posts stay on topic' settling online disputes among users' involving users and keeping the site interestingManaging Online Forums is the one book that shows site owners and administrators how to create a safe and entertaining community that users will return to again and again.

I Can See You ReviewI CAN SEE YOU is one of Karen Rose's finest books to date. This book will make you scared, thrilled and fascinated at the same time. Eve Wilson is a wonderfully real heroine, who was disfigured by an attacker several years before. Her way of coping was to escape into a virtual world where she could create a beautiful online identity. When she finally claws her way back to the real world, she wants to help others regain self confidence. As a graduate student of psychology, she has students play the virtual reality game in the hopes they will learn to socialize more effectively in the real world. When several of her "students" turn up dead, Eve joins forces with troubled Homicide Detective Noah Webster to find the man murdering these people. In their search for the killer, they learn to trust one another.
What sets this book apart from so many others is the brilliant way Rose makes you think anyone could be the killer. When reading the book I found myself shouting at the heroine not to trust this person, then that person. Be forewarned: Don't read this book at night.

Ready...Set...Tweet A Speedy Guide to Twitter: Get ready...get set up...and start Tweeting in no time. ReviewIt's important to know that author Lou Belcher herself is a relatively recent Twitter newbie and go from there. If your level of Twitter know-how consists of, "I've heard of Twitter but i don't get it," then this is exactly the book for you. Since Ready...Set...Tweet! never presumes to tackle any more than getting the Twitter neophyte loaded and and started, then it does what it sets out to do reasonably well.
Each chapter is brief and quick - the soul of Twitter. Belcher starts out by explaining what twitter is, who uses it, and the joys of being succinct within your 140 character limitations. In chapter two there are some very briefly mentioned categories of user groups one might find in the Twitterverse - for families, clubs, business marketers, new organizations, general and specific researchers, those engaging in collaborative efforts, and as a medium for announcements.
One you've caught that, you are swiftly introduced to blogs and websites (no, they are NOT the same thing) and then rushed along through the single page of chapter 4 that asks what your Twitter name might be and what you will be Tweeting about. Don't get too introspective, since chapter 5 is hard on the heels of chapter 4, and it's in and after chapter 5 that you actually get Tweeting. The instructions are simple to follow and most pages contain large screenshots that the twitter newbie will recognize as they sign up to Twitter, book in hand.
Each quick chapter teaches one basic skill - like getting your profile up, along with your avatar, your background colors, your bio, your first few tweets. Then Belcher shows how to find someone to follow. Once there, you're officially a newbie Twitterer, ready to delight the world with your pity quotations, TV fangirl commentary, brilliant photography, or wry views on the human race.
Before dropping you off to fend for yourself on the Timeline, Belcher offers a few last tips that are slightly beyond basic. She recommends using Hootsweet to schedule your tweets, asks the newbie to mix it up within the Twitterverse (to make a friend, you must first be a friend, not a self absorbed, obvious marketer), to retweet freely, and how to use such tools and memes as Search, Hashtags and Follow Fridays. A brief glossary, resource list and index round things out.
I read this book in 30 minutes on a plane ride from Chicago to San Diego. There was zero new content here for a seasoned social media maven. This isn't the book for them. This is a book the Twitter elite might give their spouse, or sibling, or whatever colleague has been hiding under a rock lately. It does the job of hand holding and does it fast. I doubt anyone would find Twitter frustrating to use with this slim book by their side.
Best for: Seasoned Tweeters to give as a gift to Twitter Novices to learn from, or for people who've been curious about joining the Twitter Timeline, who might have been a bit intimidated to ask someone what exactly they should do. Open the first page of Ready...Set...Tweet! with your computer at the ready. In less than an hour you'll be tweeting with the billions of users already in the know.
A great introduction for those in a hurry, or who just want to know brass tacks Twitter basics.Ready...Set...Tweet A Speedy Guide to Twitter: Get ready...get set up...and start Tweeting in no time. OverviewFrom sign in to sign out Ready...Set...Tweet! A Speedy Guide to Twitter tells you how to get ready, get set up and get started on Twitter in no time.Find out:* what Twitter's all about* what Twitter can do for you* how to sign up and sign in* how to make your Twitter site look appealing to others* the ins and outs of following and followers* how to Tweet* how to put it all togetherReady...Set...Tweet is the bare bones, how-to book on the popular social media site Twitter. Building Online Communities With Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress ReviewWhen I picked up this book I knew what phpBB was (my main reason for getting the book), but the other two applications were foreign to me. So, let me start off by briefly pointing out what each application is and does:
- Drupal is a CMS, content management system, (think Wikipedia) that allows users to input and update information
- phpBB is bulletin board software (very much like Invision or Jolt from surface appearances)
- WordPress is blogging software (do I really need to say more after 2005, the year of the Blog)
The publisher has chosen to group what amounts to three separate books on three open source applications together based upon the 'community' aspects that they engender, allowing groups of users to come together to post, comment and counter-comment.
The book is effectively a collected user manual for these three applications, but that does not really go far enough. Yes, the material for each is available online, but this book collects the documentation together in a user friendly manner. Anyone that has tried to install and operate a complex piece of software based upon the canned manuals can appreciate the complexity involved. Using this book is essentially like having an experienced guru looking over your shoulder offering advice as you go through the process. This can be the difference between 30-60 minutes of simple work and 5-6 hours of confusion, frustration and ranting.
Add to this the advice on configuration and usage/management for avoiding pitfalls and achieving best case results, and this book can pay for itself in no time (I bill at $50 an hour and consider my personal time even more valuable).
Bottom line, if you want to keep users on your site (i.e. not farm out these services), and want to use a CMS, bBoard, or Blog using open source software, it is worth your time to check out these options. If you then decide to use one of them, this book can save you a chunk of time and frustration.
P-)Building Online Communities With Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress OverviewWhether you want to build a community with a content management system, a bulletin board, or a blog, Building Online Communities with Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress is the authoritative guide using Open Source software. Drupal (http://www.drupal.org/) is a full content management system that allows you to create any type of web site you desire, from an eCommerce to a community-based site. With phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) you can set up a bulletin board or forum. And WordPress is fast becoming the software of choice for the exploding blog community. Building Online Communities with Drupal, phpBB, and Wordpress is authored by a team of experts, including Jared Smith, a long time support team member of the phpBBHacks.com web site who has been building sites with phpBB since the first beta releases, and Mike Little, the founder and a contributing developer of the WordPress project.

Being Virtual: Who You Really Are Online (Science Museum TechKnow Series) ReviewDavey Winder's book manages to do something that most books on the same subject as his do not: He's very personal. Even confessional. The title of Chapter One -- Identity Crisis - sums up not just the theme of the book, but what seems to have been a driving theme in the life of Winder. Having gone from a killer career Sports manager, to a home-bound, wheelchair bound web junkie, Winder's makes the strongest case for the credibility of a digital selfhood. The best part is that he introduces the disabilities factor, which is usually only allowed a footnote in most digital reporting. In fact, I would strongly recommend this book to any organization that works with the disabilities community that has a lending library program. Aside from Winder's own accounts, there are other anecdotal stories in here of disabled persons reinventing themselves or simply recreating themselves, as is -- wheelchair and all -- in the virtual landscape. The back-story of each anecdote is poignant and well told. All of them extremely personal.
Not all of the stories of are from persons with disabilities. The others are from self-seeking souls looking for the right vehicle for self expression, which they find online.
The personal touch of the book is well balanced with an informing narrative that qualifies the book as a primer for Second Life and other Virtual World platforms. The cover of the book speaks to this element and, unfortunately, only this element. If I were to judge the book by the cover, which I initially did, the autobiographical element was not something I expected to encounter within these pages. They appeared almost as easter-eggs that wanted to be found. In that sense, the book cover is the only liability.
I'm not sure what the mood is these days on Second Life. But Winder's presents the best argument so far that this is more than just mere novelty.
[...]Being Virtual: Who You Really Are Online (Science Museum TechKnow Series) OverviewThanks to the Internet, it has never been so easy to become the person of your wildest dreams. Immersive 3D worlds such as Second Life and THERE.com provide an escape route from the ordinary, into a virtual world where you have the power to mould your life in any way you please. Forget about walking, wheelchair users can fly. Pensioners wipe away the pains of age, discovering youthful exuberance and making young friends once more. No wonder it has become harder than ever to honestly answer the question: who am I?
In Being Virtual, Davey Winder looks at how an increasing number of us are living part-real, part-virtual lives, and how it affects who we are. He looks at the opportunities and dangers that a virtual identity offers us, how we juggle our real and online lives, and what happens when one spills over into the other… He uses his own personal experiences to bring the issues to life, and backs them up with the real-life stories of others and testimony from the experts. Along the way, he looks at some fascinating questions such as:
Are you a virtual liar?

Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity, and Identity on the Internet ReviewWithin the field of cybercultural studies no single writer is as widely recognised for exploring the oft-ignored categories of race and ethnicity in cyberspace(s) as Lisa Nakamura. Her writing is mandatory for any undergraduate course exploring identity online and her new book Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity, and Identity on the Internet finally collects all of her articles under one cover. Of the five main chapters, each is based upon one or two previously published articles or chapters, although most have been reworked to some (usually minimal) extent. The additional framing elements of the introduction and conclusion, while brief, do contextualise and historicise Nakamura's work in important ways and provide important signposts for future work.
The first chapter, `Cybertyping and the work of race in the age of digital reproduction', opens with an introduction of the term `cybertype', built upon the nineteenth century word stereotype, which originally referred to a machine which could easily mass reproduce specific images. Nakamura uses cybertype since `identity online is still typed, still mired in oppressive roles', and expands the term `to describe the distinctive ways that the Internet propagates, disseminates, and commodifies images of race and racism' (3-4). The chapter then deals with a number of cybertypes-including Indian Silicon Valley workers (cybertyped as efficient and cheap immigrants)-and also examines the theory that access to the internet equals equality online, a theory touted in much of the US government's `digital divide' rhetoric. Nakamura also reworks and deploys some provocative terminology: for example, she uses the term `remastered', which in technical terms describes the process of converting analogue media into digital, to mean the transference of previous racial stereotypes from the offline world into online contexts.
Chapter two, `Head-hunting on the Internet' looks at three specific online environments: the text-based LambdaMOO and graphically oriented chat spaces The Palace and Club Connect. Nakamura examines how race is represented in these spaces, and specifically how racial identities are maintained or performed both by those people who are portraying their `real' identity and those who are presenting their digital selves differently to their material lives. Nakamura discusses two main features of online identity: `passing', whereby netizens can pass as having a different racial (or gender or class) identity online via avatars and textual descriptions; and `identity tourism' which specifically looks at white users who `try out' other racial identities online, thinking they have experienced being `other', but have really done nothing of the sort due to the different ways race operates online and in the material world. While Nakamura's points are well made, she makes the unfortunate choice of comparing avataristic identity online with the television programmes Fantasy Island and Quantum Leap. This unproblematised cross-medium referencing detracts from Nakamura's very medium-specific insights about race online, and is hampered more so by an erroneous summary, explanation and thus analogies drawn from Quantum Leap (58-59; for example, describing Sam Beckett's body leaping as a purposeful `quest' when it was actually caused by an error during scientific experiments).
Chapter three, `Race in the construct and the construction of race: the "consensual hallucination" of multiculturalism in the fictions of cyberspace' examines four cyberpunk works-Blade Runner, Neuromancer, Snow Crash and The Matrix-and the racial politics of these cyberspace-related works. Nakamura argues that in the first two works from the 1980s there is an evident `techno-orientalism', whereby figures from the Japanese past become signifiers for a supposedly hip multicultural future. However, Japanese and other Asian characters still end up in peripheral or supporting roles, suggesting that cultural appropriation by no means ensures equality. The latter two texts are analysed as presenting more complex ideas of race and Nakamura's analysis of The Matrix, which still ultimately installs a white messiah above all else, is particularly strong. However, Nakamura's readings of Neuromancer and Blade Runner are both very straight forward, offering little new to readers familiar with cyberpunk criticism, making this the least inspired chapter of the collection. In direct contrast, the following chapter `"Where do you want to go today?" Cybernetic tourism, the Internet and transnationality' contains a much more focused reading of advertising campaigns for software and technology during the mid-nineties. Nakamura's argument for the paradoxical nature of these advertisements, which presented an image of digital boundlessness where race no longer matters while simultaneously using the exoticised other as something Western computer uses could digitally visit, is made precisely and powerfully. With some disappointment, it is also the shortest chapter in the book.
The final chapter, `Menu-driven identities: making race happen online' looks at specific ways that race happens on the web and then compares these findings with certain emailing practices. The drop-down menus and clickable boxes that are all too often used to categorically define `race' online are traced back to the fact that race is a key marketing category. Along with gender, age and income, information about race is sought by websites in order to target advertising. Commerce is rapidly becoming the main regulatory backbone of life online. Moreover, Nakamura argues, rather than becoming more complex, these categories either perpetuate the status quo or try to simplify `race' even further to establish an easily manageable and database-driven identity for marketing efficiency. In contrast, email is argued to still allow the greatest flexibility online. Email still facilitates flexible communication and rhizomatic formations, such as group emails and even email forwarding (which Nakamura focuses upon).
Cybertypes is not a perfect collection. Some of the material examined, especially secondary popular culture texts, is not mastered allowing poor analogies to occur. Also, some of the material reads as slightly dated, mainly due to the original publication dates of some of the article being in the mid-nineties. However, as an introductory text on race and racism online, Cybertypes is still strongly argued and easily accessible. A plethora of cyberspaces are examined, and a host of useful ideas and concepts are deployed. While Nakamura argues against simplistic menu-driven identities, it is safe to say that in Cybertypes she has provided a smorgasbord of tools and perspectives with which to further examine race online.Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity, and Identity on the Internet Overview

The Social Media Marketing Book ReviewI have been moving around social media for some time, though I am by no means a pro, either in marketing or Internet tech.
I appreciate this will be useful for anyone who has not even come into contact with social media networks, but anyone who has dabbled even slightly will find this *extremely* basic. I just cannot understand how anyone can even suggest it might be useful for a pro, never mind recommend it! If you are seriously looking to develop a social media strategy, it means you have a basic appreciation of what it's about, and that's how far this book goes, no further. In any case, don't do serious social media strategy based simply on the know-how in this book! The Social Media Marketing Book Overview

Identity Revealed (Nancy Drew, Girl Detective: Identity Mystery Trilogy, Book 3) ReviewThe last book of the Identity Trilogy, part of the Girl Detective series. This book was longer than the other two, and was just as exciting as the first two books. Nancy is still being bullied by another user on the Better Life game, and what's worst is that Nancy's friends are all being attacked too. Someone is also using Nancy's character on the game to attack her friends. When Nancy discovers the person behind the bullying and invasion of privacy, she has to fight the culprit in the game while waiting on the police to find the culprit in real life. Very intense and it will keep you turning the pages!Identity Revealed (Nancy Drew, Girl Detective: Identity Mystery Trilogy, Book 3) OverviewIDENTITY REVEALED My online sleuthing has led my friends and me down the Internet rabbit hole. After joining BetterLife, an online community, to try to stop a case of cyberbullying from the inside, the bullies turned on me. And now I'm close to revealing their true identities in real, off-line life. All the clues I've found have pointed me in one direction, but is it a false trail? Before I can expose the madmen behind the mayhem, I need to be absolutely sure that they're the ones wreaking havoc all over BetterLife. But how can I be sure when nothing on the Internet is as it seems? Catching this crook might be more difficult than even I anticipated!

True Names: And the Opening of the Cyberspace Frontier ReviewWhen I was starting out as a PhD student in Artificial Intelligence at Carnegie Mellon, it was made known to us first-year students that an unofficial but necessary part of our education was to locate and read a copy of an obscure science-fiction novella called *True Names*. Since you couldn't find it in bookstores, older grad students and professors would directly mail order sets of ten and set up informal lending libraries -- you would go, for example, to Hans Moravec's office, and sign one out from a little cardboard box over in the corner of his office. This was 1983 -- the Internet was a toy reserved for American academics, "virtual reality" was not a popular topic, and the term "cyberpunk" had not been coined. One by one, we all tracked down copies, and all had the tops of our heads blown off by Vinge's incredible book.
*True Names* remains to this day one of the four or five most seminal science-fiction novels ever written, just in terms of the ideas it presents, and the world it paints. It laid out the ideas that have been subsequently worked over so successfully by William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. *And* it's well written. *And* it's fun.
In my grad student days, we loved to sit around and discuss the implications of Vernor's ideas. Sixteen years later, I do research at MIT, and it's still fun to sit around and talk about how Vernor's ideas are coming to be.
(Amazingly enough, Vinge has done this not once, but twice: *Marooned in Realtime* contains ideas even more interesting than *True Names* -- all in the setting of a murder mystery that takes place 50 million years in the future.)
Vinge has subsequently written other, very popular and enjoyable books, such as *A Fire Upon the Deep* and his just-published *A Deepness in the Sky*. However, it's always been very frustrating to me that *True Names* has been essentially impossible to find. It's always out of print, and you have to know one of the elect who snapped up copies back when it was marginally possible -- and these copies are now jealously guarded. I won't let people read mine outside of my home. (The same goes for *Marooned in Realtime* -- seminal work; out of print.)
So I am really, really delighted that *True Names* is now back in print. I note that it is now fashionable to write books "explaining" the Net and the near-term future of our society to the layman -- books such as Negroponte's *Being Digital,* Gate's *The Road Ahead*, or Dertouzos' *What Will Be*. These books are a waste of time. If you would like to explore the implications and likely future of the computer revolution, I would recommend three novels, instead: *True Names* (Vernor Vinge), *Snowcrash* (Neal Stephenson), and *Neuromancer* (William Gibson).
Vinge and Stephenson are not only excellent writers, they are trained, competent computer scientists. *Neuromancer* is the best-written of the three; *Snowcrash* is the funniest and hippest; *True Names* -- well, *True Names* is the source.

Second Life In-World Travel Guide ReviewSean Percival's book is one of the best about Second Life I have read. He takes you to many of the best shopping, entertainment, educational, adult only, and island living areas I have seen in Second Life. This book takes the reader off of the mainland and shows that the users of Second Life are truly creative; many of the locations featured in this book far outstrip the mainland content both visually and in software performance.
Percival's writing style is easy to read and entertaining, and serious or funny in an appropriate way. I have read some of what I call, "The Linden Approved" Guides. Those books have the feeling that the writers were simply mouthpieces for Linden. They also offer little in the way of things to do. Percival's book on the other hand, is easy to read; you can pretty much open up to any page and find something interesting or fun, without all the technical hoo-doo. This book is witty and offers a fresh look at what Second Life truly has to offer the adventerous avatar.
Speaking of adventures, Percival (aka sean Voss in-world) also features an in-world companion to his book where he offers tour services and landmarks to locations both in the book and otherwise. Hello, can anyone say innovation??? No CDs, no paid websites. Just good fun ready to access at the click of a landmark. In fact, the name of his island in world is Landmark Island, I found it in places in the Second Life Search Function. Easy, straightforward, interacive. That's using 3D internet the way it should be used!
Linden approved books are expensive, and they offer little more in the way of content that a person can't learn from other residents or experimenting with the building tools in-world. Not to impune Linden Approved titles; they are great for beginners, but I was looking for something more. I found what I wanted in Percival's book. It is much more reasonably priced, has a more fun tone, and offers the in-world companion. I highly recommend this book for anyone who really wants to get the most of their Second Life experience.Second Life In-World Travel Guide OverviewSomenew users to Second Life may find that it can be very difficult to navigate this new 3D space and even harder to find some of the more interesting places to visit. Many of the best places to visit in Second Life have remained a secret to the most active and seasoned users, until now! Now there is a guide for everyone who wants to access the top destinations on Second Life. "This book provides over 200 destinations in six areas - shopping, entertainment, education, real life in Second Life, adults only, and where to live" to " over 100 top destinations in shopping, entertainment, adults only, virtual travel, education, and where to live. Answering questions like - where to go for a night out on the town, how to find the best shopping experience or find a specific area like Adidas. The book briefly covers the basics of navigating Second Life with tips on flying, teleporting and creating landmarks, then jumps into the main areas of travel. It also includes profiles of some of the people behind these locations. In most cases they are just as colorful as some of the places they create. Each location will be highlighted with a brief write up, screen shots, and location information.
