ASP.NET 3.5 Social Networking ReviewThis is an excellent book for anyone contemplating the development of a social networking web site using ASP.NET, although you may find the cutting edge technology used to be a little too advanced if you are only familiar with the ASP.NET Framework. The most useful aspect of the application design will be the database schema which meets the project requirements in a well thought out manner.
There are a few social networking features that are not covered like threaded comments and user profiles that can be customized using CSS but other common features are implemented including tag clouds and content rating.
Although this is a thick book, 556 pages, most of the content is code listings so it won't actually take you too long to read it. Building a social networking web application is a huge project which a solitary developer could hardly manage alone so just reading this book is not going to get you there.
ASP.NET 3.5 Social Networking OverviewThis book will show you how to create a scalable, maintainable social network that can support hundreds of thousands of users, complete with multimedia features. This book is written for ASP.NET and C# developers who want to build an enterprise-grade Social Network, either for their own business purposes or as a contract job for another company. The book assumes you have prior experience of developing web applications using ASP.NET 3.5, C# 3.0, SQL Server 2005/2008, and Visual Studio .NET 2008; it focuses on topics that will be of interest to existing developers - not on providing step-by-step examples for each detail.

BuddyPress For Dummies ReviewThis book has a lot of filler in it. It is also out of date now with the integration of WordPress MU into WordPress 3.0 There is some helpful information in the book even with the advent of WordPress 3.0, but you have to dig to find it.
I hope the author comes out with an update for the book. She is a good writer, provides accurate information and some good tips and suggestions.

Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives ReviewI loved this book. Sensitive, aware people perceive on a daily basis that actions, behaviors and emotions impact the lives of those around us, but the science that proves conclusively that your behaviors are impacting mine, my spouse's and friend's in Idaho offers such hope for improvement in the cosmic social network of which we all have our "connectedness". I loved the anecdotal stories - Nicholas and Erika meeting, the Starbucks employee, crazy unstoppable laughter - to which each reader will add additional network stories. We are connected, like it or not, so perhaps we can all start behaving in ways that benefit the entire network. Everyone who reads this will think twice about the impact of cutting someone off in traffic. Dr Christakis and Dr. Fowler have written for the scientific world, NY Times and lay reader - all who are part of the network.Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives Overview

Community Server Quickly: A Concise and Practical Guide to Installation, Administration, and Customization ReviewI can't believe they are charging almost $40 for this book.
Imagine a 'quick start' guide that comes with most software - this is an even more basic version.
Examples: it explains 'photo gallery' by stating that in the old days people use albums (in at least two section of the book). There are pages explaining what blogs, forums are. The 'real' meat of the book is just showing screens and telling you what to click.
It is so basic, the title is misleading. For instance, it assumes the users knows how to install IIS, SQLServer etc - but then treats the reader like newbies to computers when explaining the community server or using typical windows install.
I suggest all potential buyers, to browse through it in a book shop first, before ordering. I still can't believe the publisher approved this.
No offense, but the author is doing a college book tour - I think most college students will find this book an insult to their intelligence.
Community Server Quickly: A Concise and Practical Guide to Installation, Administration, and Customization OverviewWorking with this clear and concise step-by-step guide you'll be up and running with a fully featured Community Server Express Edition website based on ASP.NET as fast as possible. ASP.NET 4 Social Networking ReviewThis book is about how to build a Social Network (a fish owners one as an example), by using ASP.NET, C# and some frameworks: MEF, EF, ADO.NET EF.
Some of those frameworks are not lightweight but at the same time they are very ordered and the code is well structured so swapping is easy.

Some interesting points or highlights after reading it:
Uses an events-based newsfeed, same principle as facebook does. Nice details as being able to hide stuff.
Friendly urls for profiles and other sections, in fact, sometimes is a bit overabused to search for SEO, when a social network might be more private. But just having the concept of forums... means the authors wanted to add as much "social stuff" as possible, even if doesn't't fully fit.
Precalculates and stores different photo sizes on upload (right), but does it synchronously (wrong, can get to long waits or timeouts).
Lazy loading vs eager loading, the endless discussion (here decides to do eager loading of some things).
User search is pretty basic, using LINQ to search in a few fields.
Blogs are curiously created: Allow to publish public posts (even with friendly urls), but doesn't syndicates in a RSS feed so limits that public exposure.
Builds a forum, quite extrange and atypical in a social network (is among the RSS one of the things they have semi-killed). Voting, marking forum replies as answers and user rankings are... a bit out of scope for a social network, more fit for a pure forum. At least the ratings are correctly decoupled and system-wide usable (providing good extensibility).
Very simple privacy management in general: Either public or private, with just some cases of membership/access requests.
Last chapter presents scalability advices: Moving to a SOA architecture (with WCF), separating frontend servers to a farm with load balancing, service servers and DB tier, caching using AppFabric's Caching component or Memcached. Also moves the email sending process to a queued, async. system. Also mentions logical deletion and then system process to wipe deleted items, DB Indexing and data partitioning (does SQL Server level partitioning instead of handling it via code), and Lucene.NET for searching.
But also has some cons:
Uses database table relationships (referential inegrity via DB), uncommon due to caching problems
HTML inside messages in service layers
Favors code-behind dynamic html generation instead of using subviews
Stores profile avatar images in the DB (ouch!)
Friendship defined as one-way relation (instead in the more flexible two-way friend-friend relation). This results in crap code related to it (like friend search), because it must have "originator ID is friend of X" OR "destination ID is friend of X".
Presentation entities to lessen the problem of eager loading (but not avoiding it, just lowering memory usage).
And the .NET 4 in the name... would have worked equally with 3.5 (I can't recall anything FW4.0 specific in the book).
Dynamic attributes idea is nice but not scalable (even less needing to rows in different tables for each attribute.
The book mentions or implements nany tiny details not obvious but even sometimes missing on large websites (e.g. Terms of Use versioning and tracking of last accepted version by the users, Easy and mockable configuration manager).
As a conclusion, the book won't show you groundbreaking secrets nor incredible algorithms, but will set the basis for a decent social network with low usage and quite some features. You will probably want to cut out some unwanted features but code is clean and well structured. But at least the code is not badly written.ASP.NET 4 Social Networking OverviewEach chapter starts by showing the user experience we are going to create in the chapter. It then has a section discussing the major design decisions we face in building these features, and finally presents the 'solution' including the overall architecture and highlighting the most important code elements. The book presents a lot of real-world code, with comprehensive explanation and discussion. The full social network application is available for download from the Packt website, for you to examine, study, and modify. This book is written for ASP.NET and C# developers who want to build an enterprise-grade Social Network, either for their own business purposes or as a contract job for another company. The book assumes you have prior experience of developing web applications using ASP.NET 4.0, C# , SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio .NET 2010. If you working with earlier versions of any of these, you can still go ahead and use this book as a guide to get you going. The book focuses on topics that will be of interest to existing developers and not on providing step-by-step examples for each detail.

Mobilizing Generation 2.0: A Practical Guide to Using Web 2.0: Technologies to Recruit, Organize and Engage Youth ReviewEdit of 18 May to recommend Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies as a different book, with more practical tips and annecdotal support, but in no way does that reduce my appreciation for this book. Both are excellent, I think of them as truly complementary of one another.
-----
I *like* this book. Although I have years of exposure to advanced information technology and read everything by gurus like Paul Strasssman (cf. Information Productivity: Assessing Information Management Costs of U. S. Corporationsand Steve Arnold (Arnold IT, look for "Google 2.0: The Calculating Predator, not sold on Amazon), I learned stuff from this book, and I found it to be exactly right for getting an old-school CEO or other management skeptic "oriented."
In 268 well-organized and well-presented pages, the book covers:
+ Blogging
+ Social Networking
+ Video and Photo Sharing
+ Mobile Phones
+ Wikis
+ Maps
+ Virtual Worlds
Each chapter has extremely clear headlines, gray boxes, figures, and endnotes. To get a sense of the book and the online offerings that back it up, visit mobilizingyouth.org, just add the www.
A special value is short essays from top practitioners including Mitch Kapor whose essay, next to last, focuses on the coming convergence of virtual worlds and social networking. Visit BigPictureSmallWorld for a sense of the possibilities there--I have very deep admiration for Medard Gabel, who built the analog World Game with Buckminster Fuller, and I am so very eager to see him create EarthGame(TM) in which we all play ourselves and have access to all information in all languages all the time--at that point, we will end looting of our commonwealth, end corruption, and create invite wealth or as he puts it in the title of his new book, "Seven Billion Billionaires."
Most useful to me were the following:
+ Use all these tools internally to get a sense of them, before trying to do something with the broader online population
+ One billion people are connected, the rest are not, but what the billion do with their connections could impact on how quickly we get the other 5-6 billion connected and creating wealth
+ 55% of teens are active online, 80% of college students have a Facebook profile
+ Digg is an example of a global intelligence service in which every citizen is an intelligence consumer, collector, and producer
+ Cool examples that I will certainly look into include Care2, Causes, Hi5, and Gather
+ Politicians (including the three running for President now) simply do not get it. They are still using phone banks that call at all hours and spamming (Obama does less of it) instead of asking permission and then building on the relationship
+ I am very impressed by the natural manner in which the book communicates the relationship between having a good story with heroes, villians, and catalysts, and the sequence of fund-raising via text connection and follow-up. This book strikes me as both a very very good elementary text for digital immigrants (us old guys) and also a useful "once over" for the more experienced who may be overlooking a couple of pieces of the overall campaign.
+ The book emphasizes the many uses of the wiki, many of them internal, some external, but the most important being that wikis are a way of crowd sourcing. See the first book from Earth Intelligence Network, Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace (free at oss.net/CIB just add the www, but utterly lovely here at Amazon) and especially the later chapters on large scale collective and collaborative intelligence in action.
+ Tag clouds are vital, as is the selection of unique tags for clusters of informaiton you want to make easily available.
+ Virtual worlds are in their infancy, and when they finally develop, will be extraordinary as nuanced immersive learning environments (low cost low risk environmental, I would add).
The last essay from Katrin Verclas is great, and I selected the following quote with which to end this review--it captures the essence:
"Web 2.0 describes a participatory, bottom-up, decentralized world full of individual expression where people have direct access to one another and enjoy an unprecedented ability to organize, meet, and coordinate without centralized control or traditional hierarchies."
YES!

Designing Social Interfaces: Principles, Patterns, and Practices for Improving the User Experience (Animal Guide) ReviewMalone and Crumlish have done the user-experience design community an amazing service with this volume. It does the hard, rigorous work that most of us simply do not have time or dedication to do -- creating the first solid set of building blocks for designing socially driven digital platforms.
The book goes beyond the easy categories of things like "blogs & wikis" and breaks those and other compounds down into their essential elements, helping us make more informed and less platform-dependent decisions.
Design patterns are always challenging to produce, especially since designers inevitably nit-pick them to death. But these patterns are up to the challenge: they actually make sense, and I suspect will stand up handsomely to the persnickety-designer test. But even if you differ with some of their particulars, it's incredibly valuable to have the heavy lifting already done, so all you have to do is react, refine and "improve" for your own use.
More than a mere collection of patterns, the book doles out large helpings of hard-won wisdom from the authors and other veterans of the industry who have wrestled with the volatile, emergent nature of socially driven digital design.
If you're doing anything with social design, from being asked to create a corporate blog to enhancing the way employees share knowledge on your intranet, do yourself a favor and get familiar with Designing Social Interfaces.
Designing Social Interfaces: Principles, Patterns, and Practices for Improving the User Experience (Animal Guide) Overview
From the creators of Yahoo!'s Design Pattern Library, Designing Social Interfaces provides you with more than 100 patterns, principles, and best practices, along with salient advice for many of the common challenges you'll face when starting a social website. Designing sites that foster user interaction and community-building is a valuable skill for web developers and designers today, but it's not that easy to understand the nuances of the social web. Now you have help. Christian Crumlish and Erin Malone share hard-won insights into what works, what doesn't, and why. You'll learn how to balance opposing factions and grow healthy online communities by co-creating them with your users.

RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series) ReviewRailsSpace does an excellent job of teaching Ruby on Rails through a hands-on, real world application. If you are like me then you probably cringed at the thought of yet another social networking site. However, after reading through the first part to this book my apprehensions were put at ease. The authors explained in the opening chapter that "There's a tension in any educational book between the two extremes of pure tutorial and pure reference. We land firmly on the tutorial side of this spectrum--" The audience for the book is anyone beginning with Ruby on Rails. This book assumes no prior knowledge of Rails or Ruby, and sticks to that through the entire book. Each chapter walks you through the process of creating RailsSpace, while also teaching you best practices and some of the nuances of Ruby and the Rails framework.
This book is broken into two main parts, Foundations and Building a Social Network, with each part comprising several chapters each.
Foundations
Getting Started
With the introduction out of the way, it is time to jump into building the application. This chapter assists you in getting Ruby on Rails and its dependencies on your platform of choice, and then gives instruction for setting up your development environment. Once all of the pieces are in place they move to setting up your rails application, and how to get started with your first pages. They use rails generator to create the controllers and give you an idea of the default routing of a Rails application. The rest of the chapter spends some time building views and using embedded ruby to work with your templates. For the beginner to Ruby or Rails, this part is valuable for the rest of the application. They teach the basics of Ruby and introduce you to instance variables, hashes, and symbols. It isn't practical for them to cover everything, so they also give you direction on finding answers to questions that might arise. The first place to look is always the API. We have the basics down, we have created our application, generated some controllers, and put our navigation into place.
Modeling users
What good is a social networking site without any users? Here we are introduced to setting up our models in our application. This chapter touches on defining your schema through the use of migrations. You build the migration, run the migration, and then work within the model to create your validations. They spend some time with the validations and show you how to use the default helper methods or extend the validations to be more powerful and suit your needs. Now we have a place to store our users, lets move on to the process of letting them become part of the community.
Registering users
This chapter focuses on the process needed to allow a user to register to RailsSpace. We are introduced to some more Rails magic as we build the User controller and the views. We start first with the view of the registration form and learn how to use Rails helpers to generate our form fields and error messages. Next we look at the action that handles the response to the user. This involves the validation, flash error messages, and flash notifications. With the registration in place, we take a pause to look at something very important in any software development: testing.
Getting started with testing
Before we move any further we need to make sure things are responding as they should be. Testing things yourself may seem practical when the application is small, but as it expands testing proves to be extremely useful. We create tests for the database connection, our site controller, the registration process, and testing of the User model. Testing allows us to check all important aspects of our application. We can simulate the processes of a user and assure that we receive the proper response and that everything stays fine tuned. This chapter sets the foundation for the rest of the application as we expand and create new tests. We have tested everything is working as planned, now let's handle the process of logging in.
Logging in and out
Authenticating a user may seem simple at first glance, but there are often times steps that are overlooked in the process. This chapter attempts to cover all bases of making the login process painless. We learn how to setup the database for sessions and how to utilize them in our application. The sessions allow us to keep state of a user and their privileges. This also means that we need to protect our pages and some of our actions. They take the time to cover friendly URL forwarding, letting a user be directed back to any page after they login. Again, we run tests as we build more pieces onto the application. The end of the chapter is spent looking at the current code and refactoring to keep neat and tidy with the DRY principle. Just as with testing, this is also a very important part to the application and something the authors spend time doing with each and every piece of the application. We are also introduced to some more helpful Ruby nuances such as boolean methods and the bang! methods. A user has the ability to login, but we can take it one step further.
Advanced login
Users now have the ability to login. It is time to extend the login by allowing the application to remember the user. This chapter is spent on building the remember me functionality. This involves extending several aspects including the User model, the user session, and the authentication cookie stored in the browser. Since we are updating different aspects we take the time to extend our tests, assure our previous tests still work, and refactor some more of the code that we are building.
Updating user information
With login out of the way it is time to look at allowing users to interact with the website. The first part to this interaction is allowing them to update their details and information. This chapter discusses the process of allowing a user to change their email or update their password. The username is left untouched, as we will be creating a permalink with their username.
Our foundation is set. We have come a long way in just a few chapters, now it is time to extend our solid foundation.
Building a Social Network
Personal profiles
In the last chapter we allowed the user to update their email and password. Now we extend that to let the user create their own profile or spec. This allows a user to share all of their most intimate details one a single page. We look at building the user profile to be modular and utilize the same views for the public face and administrative face. We are introduced to some more rails helpers and some advanced routing techniques named routes. The user profile is in place, now it is time to create the pieces that allow all of your friends, teachers, aunts, and enemies to find you.
Community
The next few chapters will be spent building the central hub that will allow you to interact with the community as a whole. The first part addresses setting up the Community controller and setting up sample data to test our features with. Our first piece to the community controller is allowing you to browse users by an alphabetical index. This shows us some more options of the find method in ActiveRecord and how we can implement pagination and a summary in our results. Browsing by an alphabetical index is helpful, but lets move on to allow search and browsing by A/S/L.
Searching and browsing
Here we are introduced to plugins and using Ferret to help us with our search. As with the alphabetical listing we set it up to allow pagination within the results. We then setup a custom form to allow the user to search by age and sex. This utilizes the same views to return the results and allow pagination. Now we look at the location part. This is a little more advanced as it uses a GeoData database and a proximity search that allows you to find other users within a certain mileage of your current zip code. This concludes giving us all of the tools we need to find any information we need related to our users.
Avatars
What good is a name without a face? This chapter discusses several new aspects. The first is using a model that doesn't connect to a table in the database. The second is handling image uploads and resizing. We create the interface and allow for the user to upload, save, or delete their picture.
Email
This chapter introduces us to Active Mailer, an aspect of Rails that allows us to send emails. We will setup a model that extends Active Mailer, configure our server to send email, and create the necessary links to allow users to contact their friends. We create a double-blind email system that allows the users to contact each other without exposing their actual email address. Naturally, we add the methods that allow you to correspond with the user. Once it is all in place, we take a look at some new testing methods that allow us to simulate the sending of emails without filling our inboxes.
Friendships
Friendships live at the core of creating a social networking system. After all, the more friends you have the more popular you must be in real life! Again, we are introduced to some new modeling techniques in this chapter. In order for a user to be a friend with another user, we must create the relationship accordingly. This involves having a Friendship model that has the current user ID, and the friend ID. Using has_many :through we are able to recursively look through this table to keep track of the friendships and their statuses. As with everything else, we take the time at the end to test and refactor.
RESTful blogs
This chapter throws an advanced topic our way, that of creating RESTful URLs for our application. There is much to be...Read more›RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series) Overview
Ruby on Rails is fast displacing PHP, ASP, and J2EE as the development framework of choice for discriminating programmers, thanks to its elegant design and emphasis on practical results. RailsSpace teaches you to build large-scale projects with Rails by developing a real-world application: a social networking website like MySpace, Facebook, or Friendster.

Inside, the authors walk you step by step from the creation of the site's virtually static front page, through user registration and authentication, and into a highly dynamic site, complete with user profiles, image upload, email, blogs, full-text and geographical search, and a friendship request system. In the process, you learn how Rails helps you control code complexity with the model-view-controller (MVC) architecture, abstraction layers, automated testing, and code refactoring, allowing you to scale up to a large project even with a small number of developers.

This essential introduction to Rails provides

A tutorial approach that allows you to experience Rails as it is actually used
A solid foundation for creating any login-based website in Rails
Coverage of newer and more advanced Rails features, such as form generators, REST, and Ajax (including RJS)
A thorough and integrated introduction to automated testing

The book's companion website provides the application source code, a blog with follow-up articles, narrated screencasts, and a working version of the RailSpace social network.
