Moonwarriors ReviewBy AL J. Vermette: Publisher & Editor of Werewolf Magazine & Blood Moon Rising Horror Magazine.
In the sub genre of horror fiction the werewolf has seen many new tales told over the last few years. One such novel Moonwarriors stands out among others of its kind for its author Rusty Nugent has a storng passion for the creatures that he writes about.
When band of vampires invade the home of a family of peace loving werewolves they kill all but one. He is Walter Volknor and he sets out on a one wolf crusade to find and kill the evil lord of the undead Avatar. Along the way others with the same powers as he will join him in his quest and together they will rid the world of the nosferatu.
Nusty Nugent's writing is fast and clean as he tells his tale with the skill of a master writer, a la King and brings the reader into his world and holds them there until the very last page.
For fans of Werewolves and vampires this book is a must and unlike the movie Underworld with the same creatures at war there are many hand to hand battles of the two creatures in their fight to kill eachother
AL J. Vermette: Werewolf Magazine/Blood Moon Rising

Moonwarriors OverviewSet in the 8th century in Romania when it was still known as Dacia, Moonwarriors tells the tale of a werewolf warrior named Walter Volknor. Once an innocent farm boy, he is out for revenge against Avatar, a master vampire that has slaughtered his family. The werewolf begins a crusade to destroy the evil vampire race. Other compassionate wolves join him in his obsession. Four wolves in particular, Golarin, Bordak, Mary, and Stytentos, aid Walter in his many adventures and become his best friends. Throughout Dacia, fear and honor are heaped upon his name and in due time, he is a beloved champion for werewolves and humans alike. However, just as his dreams of living a vampire-free existence are coming to fruition, a chain of tragic and horrific events unfold, leaving the land of Dacia in shock. This is the first tale in the Moonwarriors saga.

Ariadne's Web ( Book of the Gods, Vol. II ) ReviewThe beginning is a little slow and at times it seems it takes many pages for anything exciting to happen, but its still a good book overall. I can honestly say i wasnt hooked on this one like i was the face of apollo, but i HAD to read what happens to Jeremy Redthorn aka apollo. After i finished the book, I went right to amazon.com and bought the next one. Arms of Hurcules. I am currently half way through Arms of Hurcules and its worth reading adraines web just to understand more of Hurcules.Ariadne's Web ( Book of the Gods, Vol. II ) Overview

Perdido Street Station ReviewIf you are looking for the unusual, the bizarre, for unforgettable images, this is the book to get. Mieville's city of New Crobuzon is a phantasmagorical tapestry of weirdly modified humans, from cactus to bird to frog to ant-men, a technology that is an equally crazy quilt of steam power, magic, electric-powered clockwork for heightened psi-powers, a political structure that could come straight from Stalin's Russia complete with deals with an all-too-real Satan and a world-thread artist spider known simply as the Weaver, a trash-heap conscious computer, and intimations of a history and wider world that is even more fantastic.
Beyond the incredible scenery is an almost Victorian moralistic plot, where the protagonist is forced to deal with the consequences of his innocent-seeming research into methods of restoring flight to a criminal garuda bird-man. His fight against the slake-moths that were inadvertently freed as a result of one of his investigations forms the main story line, and slowly builds to an (almost) exciting story line. However...
Mieville's style is very densely descriptive. In the beginning of the book, this is excellent, as it paints a very dark, depressive, intimate picture of the city and its inhabitants. As the plot unfolds and becomes more pressing, though, this same style and repeated images become an obstacle to getting the story told. At the very moments when tension has been raised to high levels, we step out for two to three pages at a time for more descriptions, effectively destroying the pacing of the story. I think this book could have been considerably improved by some heavy cutting of this material in the latter stages of the book.
There are places where the plot could have been tightened. At multiple points, the Weaver saves our hero from impossible situations, an effective deus-ex-machina device as the Weaver can apparently do almost anything (except defeat the slake-moths single-handed). Although this is consistent with Victorian-era plotting, it really doesn't belong in a modern novel. Thematically the book also falls somewhat flat, with overly simplistic value/action/consequence matings, almost reminiscent of something out of Dickens.
A brilliant, off-beat, dazzling setting; an exciting adventure tale; but marred by too many words and too little depth.Perdido Street Station Overview

MetalMagic: Talisman ReviewDerek Donais' initial entry into Fantasy Fiction is a heartfelt, adrenaline-laced adventure that gives readers what they want while providing keen insights. The book's first chapter introduces readers to the main character, an inquisitive boy that wants to understand Metanduil and its link to those that are gifted enough to use the alloy to perform magic. Jaren's sister, Morgaine, has the ability to use the magic metal but Jaren does not, despite the increasing connection he feels to the magic.
An immediate conflict emerges between Jaren, Morgaine, and another gifted village girl. It is a conflict that will force the brother and sister to leave everything behind in search of refuge, but the pair is chased across the land by sinister agents. Morgaine has the potential to become a truly powerful Valir (someone that wields Metanduil and acts as an advisor to the land's various kings). The agents are desperate to reach Morgaine and deliver her to a corrupted Valir that has developed a weapon that can destroy kingdoms with a single blow. The Warwitch has already killed one king and her army threatens to overrun the rest of the world.
What none of them, including Jaren, realize is that the boy is the most powerful of them all. Jaren can use magic without the use of magic metal, but his first attempt at controlling the power is an utter failure...and without control, Jaren knows that he will destroy everything around him, including those he loves.
Donais' writing style is fluid while providing outstanding descriptive narrative; it is the kind of writing style that readers of any age should enjoy because the author understands all of the creative elements of a great story: plot, tempo, theme, and mood. Most importantly, MagicMetal has a message for all of us that live in the modern, technically driven world: science and technology are tools, they are neither good nor evil. It is how we, as individuals, decide to use these tools that determine if we are good.
The climatic finish kept me on edge for the last hour of reading as I fought beside Donais' heroes. I could see the instant flashes of magic in a multitude of colors. I could feel the power of the spells. I felt the emotions of Jaren and his sister as they struggled to survive against the Warwitch...
This was an outstanding first book for a new voice in Fantasy Fiction. I highly recommend reading this novel and watching Derek Donais over the coming years. I am hoping for many more novels from this writer.

The Final Evolution (Avery Cates) ReviewAvery Cates is back in The Final Evolution by Jeff Somers. This is the final chapter in the Avery Cates saga (for now?) and it ties up loose ends and brings us to a satisfying conclusion. The first book "The Electric Church" has always been my favorite in the series mainly because the first person writing style and an author not afraid of using the "F" word like it is used in everyday life, in other words if you don't like that word then you would truly miss out on a great reading experience. The Electric Church was the introduction that set us off on this action packed journey and The Final Evolution for me is right up with there now and coming in a close second which makes it a really good bookend.
In The Final Evolution we have Avery Cates on his hunt to track down and finally take out Canny Orel who has now placed himself in a Monk body with the God Augmentation. The rub is that in order to save the human race Avery must decide on taking Canny Orel alive or giving in to his vengeance and taking him out once and for all.
That's all you are getting from me as far as plot details, this book is a fast paced cyberpunk explosion of gun toting adventure and I wouldn't want to ruin a second of it. If you have not read the first 4 books in the series then you should probably stop reading this right now and go to your favorite book store and just pick up the entire series and start reading through them in order. One of the great things about Jeff's writing over many other authors is his ability to push the story and not bore the reader with recaps of the last book in the series. If you are reading this book then most likely you read the prior books and if you didn't then you will most definitely want to or you are going to be lost and we wouldn't want you lost with such a thrill ride that is there to be taken.
There is one part in the Final Evolution that you see Avery break from his hard style and you get a glimpse of the man inside. Be looking for this moment around the time when Avery is dealing with irradiated people who have been pushed by Canny Orel to do his bidding. It is basically just one line but it highlights the growth of the character and the culmination of all the pressures and stress that Avery has been through. It is a crack that has been placed in that hard exterior but it is a perfect placement for it and really pulls you into the characters psyche. If you have followed the character this long then it really hits you.
Suffice it to say that this is the perfect ending to a thrilling series. You get an ending that fits the character completely and does not disappoint. While this may be the end of the line for the Avery Cates series (for now?) I am anxiously awaiting new characters and future books from Jeff Somers. I'm interested in seeing what new worlds he brings us in the future.

With avatars replacing humans and the birth rate non-existent, the human race is almost extinct. In the end, it comes down to Canny Orel; Avery's long sought after nemesis -- transformed now into something other than human.Orel might hold the secret to humanity's salvation, if he can be convinced -- or forced -- to relinquish it. Death Match ReviewChristopher Lash is a psychologist specializing in marital relationships. He previous worked for the FBI, giving him insight into criminal behavior. This is the reason officials at Eden Inc. have contacted him, to investigate the mysterious double-suicide of two of their clients.
Eden is a matchmaker, but unlike any before it. Eden uses a highly advanced Artificial Intelligence to match individuals on every little detail (more than a million criteria). Lewis and Lindsay Thorpe were two such individuals, and were also the company's first "supercouple:" two people who are a 100% match. But now they are dead...and Lash must find out why. Because another supercouple has killed themselves...and there are four more such couples to go. But finding out why two perfect couples would want to kill themselves is only half of Lash's problem, because somebody is messing with his life, in ways that could only be done through the technology available at Eden...
"Death Match" is a top-notch thriller from Lincoln Child, who has brought us (especially in collaboration with Douglas Preston) so many enjoyable, well-planned thrillers. This novel is no exception; though it is a bit predictable, it is still enthralling. The technological details are broken down into layman's terms, but with serious research behind them. Lash is an appealing, conflicted character, as are those he encounters. While "Death Match" may not be Child's best work to-date, it is certainly worth checking out, and a repeated reading or two.Death Match Overview

George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream ReviewReason for Reading: I received a review copy in the mail and while I hadn't requested it; it was a gorgeous looking book and I'm always up for a good vampire story.
I have not read the original novel which this graphic has been adapted from nor have I actually read anything by the author, George R.R. Martin, so this was new territory for me. A unique story set in 1857 along the Mississippi River during the heyday of the huge passenger steamboats. A down-on-his-luck, though widely respected captain, is met by a stranger who offers him a deal he cannot pass up. The man will give him the money to build the finest ship on the river, in exchange the man and a few of his friends will live on board and though they may be odd and will keep strange hours Captain Marsh is not to question them and while he will not interfere with the running of the boat he will occasionally give orders to dock and again he is not to be questioned. Captain Marsh agrees. Little does he know what he has got himself into!
This is a great vampire story. We have one small group of "good" vampires whose leader has managed to find a cure for the "red thirst", thus allowing them to live decent lives by night. There is also a much larger group which revels in its killing and slaughter, wanting to take over the world, keeping humans as their cattle. When the two groups find each other, it is a long fight between the Alpha's of each group with Captain Marsh caught in the middle.
I found this to be a page turner. Captain Marsh is an intriguing character, one who values honesty and loyalty. The art is beautiful, dark and even sensuous at times. This book is very much 18+ though, there are incredibly violent and gory scenes aplenty, along with full frontal female nudity, and some simply disturbing scenes, language oddly enough though, is mild. A fun, creepy horror story.George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream OverviewFrom George R.R. Martin, author of the New York Times best-selling novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, comes a moonlit tale of feuding vampire clans, death, and debauchery in the bayou! Set in 1857 along the muddy Mississippi, FEVRE DREAM introduces Abner Marsh, a remarkably ugly man who longs to captain the fastest steamboat on the river. When a pale, mysterious gentleman named Joshua – who keeps strange hours and stranger friends – approaches him with an offer of partnership, Abner's dreams appear to come true… though he may have unleashed a nightmare on the unsuspecting shores! Adapted by Hugo-nominated author Daniel Abraham and artist Rafa Lopez, this graphic novel stays faithful to Martin's original dark vision, immersing the reader in the tortures and joys of vampire society. Includes an original introduction by the legendary author!

The Avatar Syndrome (Prequel to Headless World) ReviewI will start out by saying that this book was not for the casual reader. It is intense and heavy reading. With that said, I want to mention that I thoroughly enjoyed it. While it had spiritual themes, it is not your mainline Christian book, but it really does make you think. It is thought-provoking and will stimulate and challenge you.The Avatar Syndrome (Prequel to Headless World) OverviewThe Avatar Syndrome follows Anne from childhood, to womanhood; from a troubled, taciturn youth, to a world-renowned violinist; from misunderstood recluse, to messiah of a higher truth and beauty.A product of the expansive cultural landscape of our times, Law, an architect, sculptor and a consummate student of ancient myths, fuses the teachings of Lao Tzu, Jesus, St Thomas Aquinas and Indian mysticism with contemporary issues of family, youth, feminism, fame and power to deliver a singular vision of what it could mean to be human.
Thank you, Stan for so beautiful and brilliant book. Through your book, you were able to awaken in me my true nature.K. Laycraft M.Sc., Center of Chaotic Studies, Alta. Canada
Thanks for your contribution to the literary world. I appreciate how you always include the spiritual element in your novels. R. Witthoeft, Florida USA
This book is . . . for those who love art, philosophy and science. Once again, (Law) touches us by his deep sensitivity for the psychological and spiritual growth of a human being. I. Gorska-Flipot Ph.D. Mtl., Quebec

Fall of the White Ship Avatar ReviewIn this, Daley's third installment of the "Adventures of Hobart Floyt and Alacrity Fitzhugh" (following _Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds_ and _Jinx on a Terran Inheritance_), we go beyond the scope of the original books into the past of Alacrity Fitzhugh--including his real name, his "Captain's Sidearm", and his obsession with the Precursors, an uber-race that has disappeared from the Cosmos--but not before leaving tantalizing technological clues. Much of the story takes place on an inhospitable planet as Floyt, Fitzhugh, and a female companion fight nature to reach an important meeting for the eponymous White Ship of the title. Enjoyable--but it leaves some unanswered questions, which, alas, will now remain that way with Daley's passing.Fall of the White Ship Avatar Overview
