Fortuna ReviewBored computer science major at Stanford University Jason Lind loves playing the online game Fortuna, based on Renaissance Florence economics. However, his role playing character Father Allesandro da Scala begins to take over more of Jason's time than his real life. He soon falls into heavy debt due to his character, but remains addicted to playing the game even as he is aware of what he is doing as the Renaissance Father
Broke he leaves Stanford to work for his Uncle Frank at Global Packet Control (GPC); the same firm his dad worked at before he died in a car accident almost a decade ago. At GPC, Jason uncovers questionable probably illegal deals and underhanded practices that leave him wondering what to do, but he thinks Father da Scala would know how to proceed.
Though the premise feels over the top of Mount Whitney, this is an intriguing blending of on-line role playing and global economics, as Michael R. Stevens argues that both consist of players starring in roles other than themselves. Except for a romantic subplot that feels forced and required, readers will find the saga of Jason-Father Allesandro fascinating.

I Can See You ReviewI CAN SEE YOU is one of Karen Rose's finest books to date. This book will make you scared, thrilled and fascinated at the same time. Eve Wilson is a wonderfully real heroine, who was disfigured by an attacker several years before. Her way of coping was to escape into a virtual world where she could create a beautiful online identity. When she finally claws her way back to the real world, she wants to help others regain self confidence. As a graduate student of psychology, she has students play the virtual reality game in the hopes they will learn to socialize more effectively in the real world. When several of her "students" turn up dead, Eve joins forces with troubled Homicide Detective Noah Webster to find the man murdering these people. In their search for the killer, they learn to trust one another.
What sets this book apart from so many others is the brilliant way Rose makes you think anyone could be the killer. When reading the book I found myself shouting at the heroine not to trust this person, then that person. Be forewarned: Don't read this book at night.

The Bloodlight Chronicles: Reconciliation ReviewI'm not sure where to start with this one - probably because I was very lost at the beginning. I thought that perhaps I had picked up a second in a series, but I could find no reference to a first book anywhere. The book in a nutshell is vampires meet cyperspace, but this isn't clear at first.
The Eternals are somehow "chosen" to become immortal in a non-aging sense. People can link to cyberspace by hooking up with a cord coming out of their head which seems to be connected to microchips they have had implanted in their brain. Ok - so far I'm following, but then come the strange references to levels and ranks in the cyberworld with no real explanation of what they mean.
Now, if you take the Eternals and the cyberworld somewhat out of the equation, the realtionships between the people are fascinating. The story revolves around a father, mother, and son. The parents are both Eternals and are trying to find a way to "infect" their son as well. They travel to the ends of the known universe (literally) to try and find this virus. However, beyond this the relationship was rather odd. Perhaps as a result of being so virtual based, the family's responses to each other seemed overly strained and impersonal.
2/5The Bloodlight Chronicles: Reconciliation OverviewDespite its futuristic technical trappings, enduring family bonds are at the core of this riveting techno-thriller. An alien virus that prolongs life has infected a couple, Zakariah and Mia Davis, and made their blood a valuable black-market staple due to its rejuvenating effects. The "eternal virus" has not affected their son Rix, and Zakariah is consumed with the search for an active sample to inoculate the teenager against mortality. To succeed, Zakariah surgically wired his brain for the global computer network, a virtual cyber-economy controlled by avatars. Busted for transporting grain without a permit and on the run from the government and the Eternal Research Institute, Zakariah must travel off-planet through a commercial wormhole alongside his new business partner and surgical cyber-twin, Helena Sharp, who is seeking the source of immortality for her own purposes. In the Cromeus colonies, on the other side of time and space, Zakariah will risk everything to give his son eternal life.

Come and Find Me: A Novel of Suspense ReviewMany of my geeky friends imagine that they only like science fiction and fantasy; they are disinterested in mystery or suspense novels because, they think, it's all too predictable. I think I'm going to wallop them over the head with Hallie Ephron's Come and Find Me.
I don't blame my friends for feeling this way. Some "suspense" novels are too easy to solve, and even when they try to be up-to-date the technology is a gratuitous mention. I've encountered far too many books in which the author tried to make the story "current" by painting a layer of technology over an otherwise ordinary tale. Ephron avoids the trap. The technology isn't a background issue; it's an integral part of the story. While this book isn't really like Vernor Vinge's True Names, I was reminded of it several times over.
The basic premise: Diana is a white-hat hacker and computer security expert who has become a recluse after the death of her husband. She hasn't left her house in Boston in over a year, and does all her business using an avatar in a virtual reality world (Second Life by another name). When Diana's sister goes missing, however, Diana has to use all her hacker savvy to find out what happened, and she has to battle her own demons -- one of which is stepping outside the front door.
Ephron does a superlative job of explaining what it is like to live online, from creating friends in cyberspace to understanding a system well enough to investigate it. I should know: I have met few of my clients or colleagues in person. I have plenty of True Friends whose names I know only from an IRC nickname. (I do wonder about my NON-techie friends, though. Would they get lost when Diana does a DNS search and uses Telnet to query a server?) And I can go a week without leaving the house, but that's more because I'm comfortable here (as long as I have coffee, chocolate, and a cat to pet) than any fear of the outside world.
Mostly, however, this is a really good suspense story. It didn't matter that I figured out the puzzle before Diana did; I think the author expects that (whereupon I kept wanting to shout at the character, "Turn around! Look! Can't you see--?"). This is geek summer reading at its finest, and I most heartily recommend it. In fact, I can't wait to do so.Come and Find Me: A Novel of Suspense Overview

Cast of Shadows: A Novel ReviewI thought I was going to dislike CAST OF SHADOWS. The premise seemed flimsy at best. The daughter of a physician is murdered. The physician, a pioneer in the field of reproductive cloning, is able to obtain the DNA of her murderer and engineers his cloning for the purpose of identifying the killer. Yawn. It sounded vaguely like a plot that Michael Crichton would have rejected, and wisely so, sometime back in the 1980s. And the author, Kevin Guilfoile, was stuck in my memory bank as a kind of self-styled humorist whose work had left me with the vague impression of someone who is clever but not smart. I accordingly cracked the binding of CAST OF SHADOWS with the thought that I could try it for an hour or so and then leave it unread.
Well, I didn't have to get very deeply at all into CAST OF SHADOWS before I realized that this debut novel is quite like the house of one of the characters in the story: much, much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside, full of twists and turns and corners and surprises. The aforementioned physician, Davis Moore, is a sympathetic character --- his teenage daughter is murdered --- but he's not entirely a likeable guy, kind of sanctimonious, full of self-justification, and content to follow rules until he has a reason to break them. Moore uses his medical practice as a vehicle to exact revenge. One can understand the concept of revenge, especially in a case like this, but there isn't exactly full disclosure exercised here with respect to Moore's patient or to the resulting life in being, at least not initially. Moore keeps track of Justin Finn, the cloned child. And yes, indeed, he comes to resemble someone very, very twisted.
But this is more than a tale of rough judgment and exacted revenge. Guilfoile crafts a tale that is riveting, excruciatingly suspenseful, and intellectually challenging. Part speculative fiction, part suspense and part horror, CAST OF SHADOWS deals with a future so close that it is not just around the corner but is only a half-block away and approaching fast. Guilfoile's story is peppered with a number of interesting, and flawed, supporting characters, and also introduces an online virtual reality game called Shadow World. Shadow World plays an integral part in the novel, to the extent that it is a character unto itself. It is such a fascinating concept, in fact, that it alone is worth the investment in the book.
CAST OF SHADOWS also presents a number of moral and ethical issues in dramatic settings, all of them difficult, all of them important. It is also much deeper than one would expect. Guilfoile takes the reader through so many twists and turns, particularly at the end, that it is only after extended reflection that one realizes what a truly steep and wild ride it has been. As complex as Guilfoile's plot is, however, he so carefully lays out his path that it is impossible for the reader to get lost.
CAST OF SHADOWS is a book that will be read, savored, discussed, and argued for some time to come. It is simply, and surely, not to be missed.

Death Match ReviewChristopher Lash is a psychologist specializing in marital relationships. He previous worked for the FBI, giving him insight into criminal behavior. This is the reason officials at Eden Inc. have contacted him, to investigate the mysterious double-suicide of two of their clients.
Eden is a matchmaker, but unlike any before it. Eden uses a highly advanced Artificial Intelligence to match individuals on every little detail (more than a million criteria). Lewis and Lindsay Thorpe were two such individuals, and were also the company's first "supercouple:" two people who are a 100% match. But now they are dead...and Lash must find out why. Because another supercouple has killed themselves...and there are four more such couples to go. But finding out why two perfect couples would want to kill themselves is only half of Lash's problem, because somebody is messing with his life, in ways that could only be done through the technology available at Eden...
"Death Match" is a top-notch thriller from Lincoln Child, who has brought us (especially in collaboration with Douglas Preston) so many enjoyable, well-planned thrillers. This novel is no exception; though it is a bit predictable, it is still enthralling. The technological details are broken down into layman's terms, but with serious research behind them. Lash is an appealing, conflicted character, as are those he encounters. While "Death Match" may not be Child's best work to-date, it is certainly worth checking out, and a repeated reading or two.Death Match Overview

Headless world - The Vatican Incident (sequel to The Avatar Syndrome) ReviewStan Law is the master of visionary fiction, and with Headless World he has outdone even his own previous tours de force. An audaciously complex plot involves American power hunger, the venality of politicians, the courage of characters whose special gifts make the difference between doom and redemption, and an ingenious twist that keeps you turning pages with a fast-beating heart. The author's intellectual range and exquisitely poetic descriptions make his work always exceed your expectations. This is a book not to be missed nor rushed through but savored. Every line is a gift.Headless world - The Vatican Incident (sequel to The Avatar Syndrome) OverviewJoin Anne (heroine of The Avatar Syndrome); her husband, Peter; Sir Ian, the affable maestro; Gabriel, the mystical butler; and their new friend, Gio, the quirky but powerful Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church as they unravel the most sinister bid for power the world has ever seen.
THE HEADLESS WORLD pits the traditions and beauty of the Vatican against the cold mechanical might of the American War Machine. The whole world is the playing field.
